When K's father died, K's mom was alone in the rental house -- a house she could not afford on her own forever. We needed daycare for W, she needed a place to stay -- it all worked out. Our rental house is big enough for the four of us (just so), and we're looking to buy sometime this year.

I also like my mother-in-law, so it's easy.

"Take the piss" is an American colloquialism. Usually it's "beat the piss" or "pound the piss."
