Last Tuesday, Hurricane Maria devastated the United States territory of Puerto Rico with a direct hit, bringing 155 mph winds, over 40 inches of rain, and storm surge. Almost every building on the island is destroyed or damaged and the island is still largely without power or communications. This is a historic disaster of epic proportions. Our long-time artist friend, who we know by the online name Zairyo, lives there and we have not heard from him since the hurricane hit. We hope that he is safe and still has a livable home. Please keep Zairyo in your thoughts.

Hope that he is alright, that its just the infrastructure issues.

Haven't heard yet if that dam on the island broke. Not sure where he lived on the island either.

Hi everyone. Just to give you some history, my in laws live in southern Puerto Rico. As of right now there is still severe flooding and as for dams, at least 6 have broken all over the island with several more about to go in the next few days. There was a 100% power outage at the time of the hurricane and nothing substantial has come back. It will take about 4 to 6 months for the island to get full power back, maybe more.

As for communication, only San Juan really has any cell service. Luckily temporary cell towers are being shipped there now and should be up and running mid to end of week. That being said we (my wife and I) have not heard anything about my in laws and I can only pray they are ok.

Between flooding, landslides and collapses it has taken it's toll on the people of the island.

So, obviously this is all over the news but I can confirm that it is not #fakenews. A HUGE portion of Puerto Rico, easily 80%, is still without any source of power of service connectivity. They are in such bad shape that most cities/towns are only able to provide 3 to 4 bottles of water and some bags of snacks a day to residents. That's a day, imagine that.

Luckily, my in laws we're found and we're permitted a 2 minute phone call with my wife. It's bad there everybody so please think about helping however you can. If you are an American citizen remember, so are these. The US responded faster to the earthquakes in Haiti then they did Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

I have friends with family there as well. We are doing what little we can to help, and I do hope that those poor people get some measurable relief soon.

Finally saw an update from Zairyo today:

Dont have power nor internet (borrowed phone) so I wont rant yet. We are surviving, saying we are OK is inaccurate. I hope I get to talk to you soon but our (PR) situation is terrible and very uncertain.

Let us know if he needs anything, I don't know if we can send anything out that way, but I'd like to see if we can help if he's in a bad way.

Yeah, I posted a reply asking if there's something we can mail him, for instance a water filter or a solar phone charger.

He later said that there's been too much thievery and dysfunction to reliably get anything to him. Cash isn't easily obtained either, which doesn't speak well for electronic banking at the moment. He said there's barely any power on the island.

He's excited to get back to making art for us.

Zairyo is managing, but Puerto Rico is a shitstorm. The rain is especially bad.

He's said before he doesn't want physical items because he isn't sure he'll be able to get to them before they're stolen.

However, he says he's going to run a commission's list if he can get his PC to work well.

I'll keep updating here on his status, but a request: if you can, set aside money to commission him if he announces availability.

Zai has been a part of Star Army for almost a decade.

We can be there for him when he's ready.

Zairyo reached out to me today to let me know that he is doing better. He's still using internet on someone else's phone and has moved since his old home was... like something out of "Last of us". He says he can start buying things again but stuff like water is still in short supply and he's surviving on canned food until his fridge can get fixed. I have asked him if we could send him anything and he's still declining. He's still without power from the sound of it. :(
