"Welcome to the server," a soft voice greeted the admirals as they joined the virtual conference room. It was a scenic place, modeled after a banquet hall of a resort on Hanako's World, with white walls, teal carpet, and large windows facing a beach. In front of them, at the end of a large table, sat Taisho Ketsurui Yui.

Soon, Kessaku Irim, Tamahagane Mai, Kawahara Opal, Ketsurui-Chinomai Minori, Shinja Fujita, Shinja Noriko, Fensalir Kelrina, and Eikan Minato joined the conference room as well.

As they waited for others to join, Yui apologized for the conference being virtual instead of actually sending them to beach, and there was a little laughter.

But this conference couldn't be more serious.

An image of a Nepleslian man flashed into existence, the lines running up and down it and the slightly bluish tinge showing that it was being made by an older hologram recorder, which was being broadcast into the room. The Taisho Johnathan Whitmoor had arrived, and he bowed cordially to the other 'occupants' of this virtual meeting room.

"I apologize for taking so long to arrive, Mistress Taisho," Whitmoor began, referring to Ketsurui Yui with a bow, "It took a while to get this machine working, and our usual interface is having problems." The image of the Taisho remained bowed just long enough, before straightening up, the form of him 'moving' to join the others at the virtual conference table.

The image of a blue eyed, sandy brown haired Nekovalkyrja in a working uniform appeared in the virtual conference room. Her tresses were pulled back in a bun and she wore a katana on her left him. In the background a view port could be seen with a star field in it. This was Mikasa Sorano-Taisho, commander of the Second Expeditionary Fleet. Even in a working uniform her appearance was almost immaculate except for a small smudge of soot on her left cheekbone.

Sorano bowed towards the image of Yui. "Greeting Ketsurui Yui-Sama. Sorry for my choice of uniform. We just concluded an operational exercise at Fort Shotou and I did not have time to change."

"Good evening." she said looking at the other officers. She then took a seat at the table in the room were she was on the Yamato and had the AI program her image taking a seat at the table.

The image of a Yamataian standing in an office with the Star Army flag behind her appeared. She had pale green almond shaped eyes and raven black hair. Her hair was pulled back into a bun with a Kanzashi hold her hair in place. Shinja Fujita-Taisho was wearing a Type 30 uniform.

Her image turned to face Yui. "Ketsurui-Taisho it has been too long since we have had the opportunity to speak." she said and bowed appropriately. She held it for a brief moment and rose up. "Greeting from Taurus Star Fortress. " She said looking at the other occupants and gave a brief head nod to her virtual fellow clan members.

She took a seat and her simulacrum did the same next to Sorano.

"We have a number of things to talk about. Our victory at Yamatai has put us in a position to strike back with a deathblow at the NMX in this brief time when they are recovering. I have three fleets attacking the hub of their military operations at Rabaal. But a single strike is not going to solve our problems. The NMX are scattered all over known space. Our first priority is to take back our worlds. So what systems would you like to see at the top our list? And would you like your fleet to retake those worlds or take on the NMX homeworlds?"

Shosho Morioka Naoko appeared, slightly late perhaps, with her hair somewhat disheveled - she had bound it back with several ties that looked as if they were leather, twined from the base of her neck in a criss-crossed pattern that was nothing short of archaic - and with the air of someone who had just washed. There was no accompanying image of her surroundings - her digital duplicate simply walked into existence without any preempting theatrics. Their absence was actually kind of surprising.

She was wearing a sash that Ketsurui Hanako would have easily recognized; cobalt blue, spread over one shoulder and cinched at her waist, opposite. It was one of the few remaining symbols of a knight protector of Xiuluria and the Vice-Admiral's braid lay over the dark blue material like a bolt of sunlight over the deep ocean. Otherwise, the dark skinned, regularly beautiful Nekovalkyrja was wearing the reinstated bodysuit uniform, with white panels, as it suited her form exceptionally well.

Upon appearance she bowed, formally, but without speaking; the Taisho was busy addressing the other admirals, and would not have appreciated the interruption, Morioka thought.

Then, she took her place a respectful distance away from Yui, since the other admirals - the actual fleet admirals, as opposed to just the scuzzy little task force admirals, naturally - had the right of rank.

Rika took a moment and then stood up, "Mistress Taisho. The Fourth Fleet is in the final stages of preparation for an assault. After three long years our recent foray into the UOC space with the 1XF Seventh Squadron has paid off.

Our Intelligence team located a prisoner facility about 100 ly south of our position. However, there is a passage to it in the Yugumo Cluster. We have ascertained that Shimizu Akina and a number of other high profile prisoners are behind held there. Operation Liberation will deploy in two weeks time with Task Force One Three and my Command group.

That will leave Task Force Two my Rapid Response Group to remain in the Bard Cluster to deal with any incursion in a protected system."

She took her seat.

The Chujo Kasami Erika, of the 9th SF, appeared in the virtual world in her own stretchsuit uniform. She had little time, but was updated on the subject Yui wanted to discuss.

"The 9th SF has targeted Xyainbor, and will be engaging in an operation to clear the planet of NMX units within the next four hours. Afterward, the 9th SF could be utilized to drive down toward the KMS, stopping at the edge of the NMX territory in that direction."

Once the others had spoken, Whitmoor made himself apparent, and explained the situation his own fleet was in.
"The Fifth fleet is currently undergoing a complete reorganization and resupply, as we found ourselves rather ill-equipped for the assault on Nataria, despite its success. However, once we have been properly re-equipped, I will be sending the Fifth fleet to retake Tami. After that, I am as yet unsure what our next target is." Finishing his report, the admiral's image sat back down at the chair it had occupied.

A male Yamataian appeared in his duty uniform. "Daikantaitaisho-kakka," Taisho Kurita Shunsaku bowed to Yui. He repeated this formal greeting to all of the Taisho present, modifying their title as needed. Then he realized that the leader of the 9th Fleet was a Chujo, which threw him off. He had thought the 9th was commanded by Taisho Hokusai. As the most junior Taisho, it was easy enough to know his place amongst the fleet admirals. But a Chujo whom he didn't know? Where did that fit into the formal protocol?

After a brief hesitation, he bowed, "Chujo-kakka," before taking his place. As the most junior Taisho and the newest Fleet commander, it would be inappropriate of him to speak before the higher, more senior commanders.

"I intend to neutralize or capture NMX assets in the NMX home cluster and create blockade around their capital system, Aetherus Haven, until it surrenders. This will be handled by the 1st Expeditionary Fleet and Third First along with Taisho Minato's Sixth Fleet. I want every other Star Army fleet to be engaged in taking NMX-controlled star systems back, with the goal of taking all NMX-controlled systems by YE 35," Yui explained. "After the war, the next major likely conflict is with the Lorath. Their intrusion into the former United Outer Colonies is an invasion of our space and cannot be tolerated. We need to start thinking about how best to eject the Lorath from our space. The goal would be restoration of our territory, not genocide of the Lorath people; however we would want to devastate their ability to produce military equipment. We need to figure out how big a force would be needed and what targets to hit. In the meantime, I will begin a military buildup to support our eventual operations there, which will likely begin by YE 36. We will also begin moving more assets towards peaceful exploration and helping the department of colonization. Any admirals that which to volunteer for exploration, or any of the above missions, please say so."

Sorano looked at the screen a look of surprise. "Mistress Taisho, the 2XF is already in the final stages of our planning for an assault on Aetherus Haven."

With a wave of her hand a image of the star system appeared both infront of her in her actual office and in front of her virtual self.

"We have named this mission OPERATION PAYBACK. We started the planning shortly after the Battle of Yamatai was concluded and we decided it was time to make a statement not only to the enemy but to our people.

I have a group of SAINT ships in that system right now collecting mission essential data.

I will be committing the lion share of the 2XF resources to this assault. The SAINT teams are currently locating a number of high priority targets.

First, their planetary power grid, every generator and distribution point will be identified by the time we launch.

Second, we will take out their telecommunications infrastructure.

Third we attack their transportation systems, their planetary space port and any other significant transportation hub.

It is my intention to blast Aetherus Haven back into pre-digital age."

"Kakka, with our base of operation in HX-2, I intend to retake the Hanako cluster and secure our flank. The Twelfth Fleet can support military operations in the former UOC or begin southerly exploration following the war's end. But is it wise to start a new war right on the heels of this one? There are strong passions against the NMX because of the recent Battle but less so with the Lorath. Would it not be wiser to pressure them with a blockade first if they do not comply with our demands? That way, we would seem less aggressive and be able to paint the Lorath as the one who would not work with us."

Kurita was against a war with the Lorath but he did not give voice to those thoughts. He was a soldier again and it was not his place to argue policy set by a former Empress. But for the sake of those volunteers who had enlisted to combat the NMX threat, he had to try to steer events away from outright conflict.

"The 9th Fleet remains relatively uncommitted past Xyainbor, Mistress," Kasami said. "We can be deployed through the expanse directly south of Yamatai if necessary, though it might raise tensions with Nepleslia.

"I likewise must wonder about a war with the Lorath. With Task Force Lantern being dispatched there, surely time must be granted to ensure they are successful."

The Shosho sighed musically.

Morioka had sat with her hands folded, one leg over the other, leaning back in the chair with the prim and polite air of someone who is resigned to long speeches and broad, sweeping statements from superiors. By contrast, she had remained - was still remaining - remarkably silent, especially given her reputation for theatrics.

Now she spoke, and her tone was respectful - though, it was difficult for her to keep a sort of lilting sing-song out of her voice; it seemed to be as beautifully natural as her sunlight hair.

"Daikaitai-Taisho-denka," the Shosho began, referring to the Admiral's former royal titles instead of her current, more state-based responsibilities, "It seems to me that we have recently went to such great pains to, if not unify the other races, at least pacify them regarding our sovereign nation's military efficiency during time of peace. It is their opinion, without doubt, that we are war hungry and unscrupulous. Enough has been shown in the recent conference, which I had the - well, I suppose I should say the pleasure of attending. We have had the opportunity to annouce our military intentions to the other inhabitants of the star ocean, and for the most part, it seems that they are accepted as necessary to ensure our sovereignty in the area of the former United Outer Colonies, which are of course ours again.

"The Lorath are foolish, grasping, and without power comparable to ours. Their strength is a mere two thousand ships, give or take logistics, if the recent reports from the front are to be accepted as fact. I have myself seen several patrols of them, and though they affect to move in strength, I am relatively confident that my Task Force - which to remind the rest of the table consists of only five warships, three of which are capable of extended conflict and only one is capable of discharging Aether, which in my day used to be our shining sword - pardon. I say again, my force could deal them a heavy blow, if utilized correctly.

"However, ultimately, two thousand ships in the area tells. I would eventually be overwhelmed by their firepower, and essentially, to declare open war while we are still deployed would be dooming us all to death. Especially if we establish, as we have planned to do, a colony in the area. Even so, if we wish to make the area a warzone, it is likely that, with our Aether, which they distinctly lack, a single fleet - perhaps the Fourth fleet, which is stationed nearby in the Bard cluster - a single fleet would be enough to repel any incursion against our borders. Even should they come in force.

"So it seems to me, ultimately, that as they are harmless and can pose no real threat to our Galactic Empire, that to pursue a conflict with the Lorath would ruin our intergalactic reputation further. If we were to go to war directly, it would be unquestable that popular opinion would turn on us, should we be the aggressors.

"Therefore, I would not recommend strengthening our border until conflict is unavoidable. I will however abide by whatever decision you make, Taisho-denka, and if it is your wish that we be your spearhead, I would not decline the honor."

"If we play this right, they will back down and war with the Lorath will not be necessary," Yui said. "But I am more than willing to commit to such a conflict and we will be ready." Yui's face made it clear she was not pleased with the lack of volunteers to take the fight to Lor. "In any case, let us return to the main subject at hand."

A large whiteboard appeared in the room and Yui walked over to it and started writing down star systems and notes.

"Ketsurui-Taisho, I prefer to deal with one enemy at a time. If the Lorath want to send their forces into the occupied regions. I say let them. They will expend their resources and tie up some of the NMX. Once we crush our current enemy there will be time to contend with the Lorath be diplomacy or by force." Sorano replied

Something in the way Yui spoke and the way her face reacted gave Kurita the feeling he was being insulted. "Kakka, each and every one of us is more than willing to defend our Empire. If there is a threat, none of us will shirk our duty!" he said emphatically.

"Further, the Nepleslians are clearly planning a push into the southern expanse where Mwigflugbajik and Hyulughflar are. Otherwise, they would not have deployed their largest fleet for the reconquest of one planet. And their other three fleets remain unengaged. It seems to me that the Nepleslians are conserving their strength for a prolonged offensive. If the 1st Fleet loses momentum, then subsequent fleets enter the battlefield to relieve the pressure. I would suggest we allow the Nepleslians free reign in the area around Rok'Veru until we are sure that they have ceased their offensive. It would not do for us to create a situation where they are forced to battle both the NMX and our forces. Once the war is over, we can negotiate with them for the star system."

Kurita felt uneasy planning any offensive in the area where the SMDIoN was known to operate. From what he gathered during his briefings, the Nepleslians were preparing for a major conflict in the region. The SAoY was deploying each of its fleets simultaneously in multiple regions but the SMDIoN was holding back, as if preparing for a prolonged campaign rather than a thunderbolt strike like the Empire.

"The honor of the Empire will be upheld!" Kurita pronounced, "However, Daikantai-kakka, we must make sure that if conflict with the Lorath is inevitable, the galaxy knows that they are the aggressors. Not us! The Nepleslians and Freespacers are ambivalent towards us. So we must ensure they marginally support us. To achieve this, the Lorath must come across as the villains who will not back down from their expansionist agenda while we appear as the defenders of our sovereign territory!"

"Agreed." Yui nodded ever so slightly as she paced around the whiteboard, updating it. "Now is our chance to take Darso, Koenic, and Valaad. Even if we eventually give them back to the Nepleslians, they would be good bargaining tools for Yuumi. I hope we keep them, though...they are part of Yamatai's historic territory and we need to control more of the immediate space around the Yamatai System. Can Fourth Fleet handle them?"

Rika looked at Yui keeping her face neutral. She wondered for a moment if the Taisho had not heard her earlier. However, one did not make the Fleet Taisho seem foolish.

"Mistress Taisho, upon the return of our forces from Operation Liberation. We will rearm and undertake the liberation of those systems." she said trying to figure how one of the smaller fleets was supposed to accomplish the task. She made a note to authorize the production of additional resources that would be needed to replace the anticipated losses from the operation and to bolster the fleets overall strength.

"Yes, I understand you want to do your prison break operation first, and that is okay," Yui said. "But the big morale victories are going to come from changing the map flags."

The green-haired old admiral returned to her seat. "The Imperial Premier has promised military protection to the Iromakuanhe and the Abwehran Star Empire in return for food aid. Any volunteers to be their protector fleets?"
