Are we allowed to try and make a new Species?

This is really burning away at me, I was thinking with all the races we currently have, we don't have a very. Mercantile Society type species. I was wondering if I would be allowed to throw a new alien race into the ring of this space opera? It would be awesome if I could.

Yes, it is possible to add new species (or factions of existing species). There are some general requirements listed on the wiki. I'd link you but I'm posting from a phone broswer. In particular I'm looking to add more species that aren't "basically human," and there is a requirement for an illustration.

After reading that this morning, I recruited one of my Friends and we just started churning out Sketches for Alien species. Hopefully, I make an acceptable drawing for it. I'd love to have my RP goal for a Sci Fi Rp come true!

Factions Guide

I'm assuming this is not a Player Faction. So I will paste the description and requirements for a Background Faction.

Background Factions are setting resources usable by all GMs. These could be:

Enemy factions to serve as opponents in plots.
Alien factions to add flavor and variety to the universe.
A starter for a player faction that hasn't opened plots yet.

It is important that each faction have a purpose and a use: if you're building a faction as a static personal display piece or one that no one is using, you're doing it wrong. Connect to other factions in the setting.

Background factions usually have a person in creative control of them. Please be respectful to their creation and consult them before using the faction if possible. Background factions are not used as the equivalent of player characters; Star Army is a character-based roleplay, not one where each player has/plays a personal faction or Empire. Once you make the species, it's for everyone.

It's okay for player characters to be from a background faction. In fact, this can be a great way to flesh the faction out.
Requirements

They should generally not unbalance the setting or overshadow the played factions.
They should appear or have a solid plan to appear in a roleplay plot at some point.

Species physiology

As I do with every race/species submission, I must ask for an answer to the purpose of this species. You've just joined today and already you want to change the setting without even getting into a plot. This strikes me as a lack of interest in the existing setting and more of an attempt to be a player on the meta-plot level.

It would behoove you to get more involved in plots and the existing setting elements first than worry about contributing new species on your first day.

I wouldn't say that, I mean... maybe I just have different standards, but the Brolt and Vekimen don't seem significantly less human-like than the average Star Trek alien to me. They walk, talk, see, feel, relate, and everything about the same way that humans do, and have an extremely human-like bodyplan except for the heads (and tails, in the Vekimen's case.)

Though compared to some of the previous races, they're not so much 'Humans plus special features', they're still closer to 'rubber forehead aliens' than 'starfish aliens', so I still don't feel like that role is filled. On the other hand, I don't think there's much interest in aliens that aren't closely-based on humans, or at least familiar animals. If there is, I can help, though!

The current state of the Brolt (only their modern variant) would definitely not really be "non-human". Although I will say that the Brolt do not talk. They vibrate as a natural communication method, but talk through translation devices. Their ability to see will also be hindered later on (when the "Traditionalist Brolt" have art/are included as a variant), but relatively they are pretty similar to humans.

Truth be told, the Brolt becoming more alien is a possibility depending on how and who they interact with. If, for example, they somehow got along with the Mishhu? They'd probably adapt their form to a more Mishhu-like state. Their humanoid appearance is mainly due to how their intended interactions are with/have been with humanoids so far. They're even remarked as "easy to change", as they can quite literally trick their body into growing into different shapes. This is a part that will be expanded upon before the Brolt are made playable (as PCs. As NPCs, they don't require this ability), as it will allow Brolt to keep their mushroom (traditional) heads, modify their bodies to better fit if they're on a low-gravity world/high-gravity world, and overall adjusting themselves via body shape/limb design.

TLDR: Brolt are definitely a humanoid and still could pass as humans given the right coloration and armoring. This is likely to change as they develop/"evolve" their forms based on their travels, homes, and allies.

Edit: It should be noted the initial translator utterly sucks. Brolt will likely be terribly misunderstood for a good amount of time
