Earth Cultures?

Here's a question I've always wondered about, since we're not 'in contact' sort to speak with Earth, how can we attribute langagues and cultures from there by name? Am I missing their equivalent somewhere? We have English as the common language, which isn't too much of a stretch, and the Neko learned Japanese from their creators, which also makes sense. However I never heard mention of Indian culture for that matter (for example.)

Just wondering~

At some point, colonists from earth started colonizing space. Most of them were Americans and Japanese, although there were a few other types built in. Nobody in the Star Army universe knows exactly where old Earth is, but there's a lot of stuff from it that hangs around like languages, even hundreds to thousands of years later. There is an Earth in the Nerimian space, but its history shows that space technology wasn't begun until around the Nerima year 1960 (Current Nerima year is a couple after 2070 I believe, whereas space travel has been around the SA universe for over a hundred years )

In conclusion, the origin of humans and Earth culture in the SARP is deliberately left vague. Perhaps someday we'll pull a Battlestar Galactica and find Earth and visit.

That would make the Emperor cry.

I see though, so there are references to things or languages FROM certain cultures, not specifically linking them back to their known origin? So does that mean Trolls speak old Norse, but as they aren't from Earth it's their own thing? (meaning, we blend certain parts for the universe? In other words, these references aren't associated with some lost mother-planet by the people in the galaxy, just as a certain style..or 'are what they are' sort of thing?)

Some people say that the ancient trolls were in contact with the ancient Norse of earth. No other explanation is available, since the Trolls use the same runes as the viking guys did.

<3 Nimue Midgard!

*cough* Anyway, so do they have the same pantheon, then? Or some sort of similar oral tradition? I read all of the Edda, and Poetic Edda..to start with. Just interesting stuff. I'd have to brush up on my rune stuff, though as I recall it's mostly for blessings or some such?

Edit: Meaning, in things like 'Words from the High One' (title might be a bit off there) we can expect to see the idealized vision of how a Troll thinks a great Troll should behave and govern their life?

I'm going with the theory that the human cultures that currently survive/thrive in the SA universe is based upon which nations evolved into major space powers on 21st Century Earth.

Assumptions:

* The Americans have a pretty large lead in this area, and the US will continue to be a space power. Thus, American culture is alive and well in the SA universe, even though no one has a clue about the origins of said culture. Traces of Hispanic and Asian cultures will tag along for the ride.

* In order to challenge American supremacy in space, Europe and the declining Russian space program will ally themselves with Japan, along with other Asian powers such as China, India, and South Korea. The Coalition will emerge as the other major space power. Thus, Japanese culture is alive and well in the SA universe, along with traces of Indian, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and various other European and Asian cultures.

But as Wes said, the connection between 21st Century Earth and the SA universe is being deliberately kept vague.

Not to mention you have to account for how cultures evolve, I'm just taking guess's here but you'd have to figure people would change the meanings for some traditions and maybe even give up certain religions and have some things survive in the newly created religion of the next Order/empire and such, if you look at catholthism you can find a lot of traditions that date back to pre christain europe and the roman empire, which is such a cultural schorgasboard as is due to the lengths the empire travelled picking up traits and customs as it went, i could imagine that the earth colonists did the same thing,

Exactly. Some traditions and rituals never die. They just get assigned different meanings and rationalizations over time. :)

Please do a battle star Galactica!!!! I will love you long time Wes! This is such a wonderful idea and could finally put it to rest! Let people see how destroyed earth is! But make it there! Do eeeeet

Honestly, because of how interesting the setting is, the idea of going to earth to see what it became entices me even more. The more I learn about the setting, the more I want to see if I can visit earth. Find some old as shit piece of salvage that happens to have the coordinates. Make a plotship outta it. I would run that, seriously. I got more than enough idea's
