RP [FT6] The Patriot Gambit, Ep.1: "Bad Business"

Simon sat in the armory leaning back against the gun cages seemingly lost in thought. He attuned his audio receptor to the correct frequency of the team as he was filing through his memory unit rehashing all he had on Minkan and Elysian medicine.

He knew this team would do well. There was a good mix of skills and a variety of styles to pull from. As long as they could get all the team members to work together.

For the most part, Valerie kept to herself while suiting up. She'd stripped down and put the armor on with a well-practiced efficiency. Where the suits the team had recently been issued were undoubtedly new, well-cleaned, and still had that "new armor" smell to them - Valerie's was much more clearly used. Paint chipped away in places, other places faded from long exposure to the sunlight, and etched in the left shoulder guard was a crudely done cracked skull.

Though the age of time and use wasn't so severe as to make her stand out from a passing glance, a keen eye would be able to tell the differences. It wasn't until the other two started gearing up that Valerie visibly began paying attention to them - watching both of them out of the corner of her eye. Saying nothing to either of them at first. Until the explosives expert retrieved a pistol - and little else.

She retrieved a few things from a nearby locker with the largest thing being a carbine-length assault rifle and had a frown on her face as she approached Jasmine. She held it out with one hand close enough to nearly be shoving it in the other woman's chest. In her other hand she had a three-point sling and suppressor for the carbine in question held out in expectation for Jasmine to take them.

"That's a survival gun you've got, rookie. Carry one as a back-up, yeah," she nodded down to the silenced .45 secure against her own chest. "but if that is what you're coming into a rifle fight with - your asking for a bad time. I'm not going to suggest cutting down on explosives because you were trained to know what you can use. But if you really have to carry so much that you don't have any spare pockets, then your suit has a gravity field for a reason." She looked between the two women, "I'd rather not see either of you get a short career because you didn't have what you needed."

Jasmine blinked as the assault rifle was practically shoved at her. Though she had no problems with guns in general, and knew how to use practically each of those in the armory if need be, she preferred to not be loaded down with more than necessary. However, since Valerie was expecting a major shoot-out, Jas simply nodded and took the proffered weapon, sling and carbine. Doing the routine inspection, she ensured the safety was on before strapping it to her back after getting the suppressor on the end of it.

"Thanks, Chief," Jas said with a smile. "Even though you don't know any of us all that well, it's still touching you care enough about us to want to take care of us." She winked a little. Though she was speaking in a light voice, she was just as serious about what she said as if she weren't trying to be cute and funny. "And don't worry, Mum, I won't forget the tear gas!"

As he noticed everyone finishing up, Simon asked, "Ok folks, yell out your ammo type and I will grab one extra magazine for each of your weapons. It will help in case of emergencies."
Anything could happen on these kinds of operations. Simon knew that this was his chance to be apart of something good and make a difference.

"No special treat for me Chief? Playing favorites with the pretty one I suppose." She flashed a mischievous grin at the other females and cinched down her toolkit one final time. With the shotgun hanging from it's shoulder strap across her chest, she tied her hair back and double checked it was all secured in a sloppy bun. For good measure, she loaded a second spare magazine for her silenced pistol and tossed it into the shell bag on her hip. "Good to go Chief?" With the go ahead, she reached up to the wall separating the two armory locker rooms and pounding three times with a balled up fist hoping to signal that it was time to roll out.

Jas was delighted that Val played along and hoped Valerie would as well. She smiled impishly and shrugged, "Sometimes the baby of the family gets special treatment. Didn't you know that?" She winked at Val and blew her a kiss before making sure everything was on her person that she needed. She heard Simon and gave him the specs of her weapons so he could get the extra ammo for her, should she need it.

Blackburn walked into the male's locker room. Removing his H36-1 from the holster in his jacket and stripping down to get into his armor he tried terribly hard to ignore the other two's conversation that wasn't very interesting. He strapped into his armor and quickly went about fitting his handgun before pilfering through the racks of guns and bins of accessories to get a silenced M3 carbine with a holo sight. Blackburn spent a couple moments attempting to effectively take a reasonable amount of tear gas while cramming an unreasonable amount of ammo for both weapons into every possible area.

"I'll take some 6.8x43 if you can spare the room. If not, take care of the others first," Blackburn said settling against a wall and closing his eyes. He wasn't completely psyched about this but he wasn't going to complain.

"Only pretty one in this room is my ass." Valerie offered a small chuckle and smile before grabbing her helmet from the locker and her DataJockey, slotting it into her helmet. Though Jas' wink brought a roll of the eyes, "I'm taken, rookie."

Now that she stood fully suited and armed, Valerie tucked her helmet under her arm, wires for a cyber-ware link-up hanging loose from the helmet itself - not yet hooked up. The half ID-SOL agent stepped out from the womens side of the armory locker-room and gave the wall three hard-raps so everybody would be able to hear it easily enough.

"Okay, folks! Dress-up is over! Let's move!" She barked.

Zylis looked around at the others, at first wondering if they all were going to take half the armory with them. This, of course, was until he watched Jack practically load what was left of the armory into every nook and cranny he could find all the while still asking for someone else to take more. Feeling as though he were under equipped and equally under prepared, Zylis approached the weapons racks looking to better round out his loadout.

For mid to long range engagement, the HG36-1 he picked up would be more than sufficient, but for close quarters he needed something both accurate and with decent stopping power. Looking over the "Knuckler", it seemed like a solid choice. Double barreled, gracious clip size and fairly stable firing platform with the clamps. It also allowed him use of his other hand, if need be. He'd stock up on a few of the double clips as well.

Thinking back to Raphael's suggestion to get a visual on the port they'd be at none too soon, Zylis thought to reach out to ELINT for the feed. With his HUD up, he tapped into the secure channel. He wondered who'd been assigned to support Valerie's team, also wondering if he'd worked along side them during his stint as an IA agent.

The link was already set up for the team's communication. A quick glance at the user ID responsible would have shown that Valerie established it long ago before Field Team Six had been reconstituted. It was a communications link to a JANE, with an indication that the AI at the other end was standing by for input. As a member of the team, Zylis had the appropriate security clearance necessary to use the connection.

"JANE, could you patch me into the security feeds for the space station we're heading to in the Kovax system?"

The voice that answered could be heard by every member of the team, a soft female voice, with a pleasantly happy tone to it, "Good morning, Agent Darkjasper!" It replied in greeting, "I'm currently interfacing with port authorities to acquire the necessary system permissions. It shouldn't take more than a few moments."

Zylis couldn't remember the last time he heard someone so happy to hear from him, despite it being an AI, he'd find himself a little flush. Good thing everyone couldn't see his face. "Thank you JANE. While you're at it, could you check and see how long repairs to their ship still require?"

"Logs for required repairs place them at one day due to an unexpected failure of several key components in their ship's power grid and one stern thruster. However I am currently working to delay that to a further day to allow a more flexible operational window."

"Two days at best... Hopefully we won't need more than that. Though I'm sure you'll have us covered should we need a bit more time." The connection had been made to the feeds, and Zylis had four different cameras displaying on his HUD. Nothing seemed out of place, even scanning back through 24 hours of footage at high speed gave little useful information.

"I guess that should have been expected, they'd keep a low profile and their noses clean. I wish they would have given us something... anything..." Zylis thought to himself.

The dock was clear of anything suspicious. Over the course of twenty four hours little major happened, with apparent dock workers moving through the area. Little seemed out of place in regards to the cargo containers or any of the individuals on camera. Occasionally small groups of individuals could be seen coming and going from the ship - usually the many of the same people if examined closely - likely enjoying time at port.

"Castiel, nothing of importance could be ascertained from the footage. Just your average run of the mill port feed." It made sense to him though, if half his comrades just blew up a ship enroute to the capital, he wouldn't want to draw attention back to anything he may or may not have been doing. "JANE, much appreciated. Do you have anything else for us?"

"Nothing presently, Agent. But don't worry, I'll be keeping in touch."

Valerie piped up over the team's comm-channel, "As you may all have heard, that's JANE. She's our in-field tie to ELINT." An audible chuckle over the radio, "Be nice to JANE and say hello, ladies and gentlemen. She is going to be the best friend and voice in your ear when I'm not yelling at you."

"Chief Kohler, are you implying that I don't yell?"

"I'm saying your a softie for rookies, JANE."

Valerie rapped on the wall again, harder.

"Now let's go!"

And with that she moved to lead the way again.

======================
The path through several hallways and elevators, led at a rushed pace by Valerie, led to one of the base's many underground hangers. Where, waiting after the ground crew had just finished prepping it, was an olive-drab Onset shuttle. It wasn't the most comfortable ride in the world but it was likely nothing those in the team weren't used to or able to deal with.

When they approached they would be able to witness one of the two crew-members stepping from the passenger area into the cockpit. Valerie idly stood by at the base of the cargo ramp until the last member of the team was aboard before joining them. She found a spot at the rear of one of the two benches and secured herself in place.

The pilot's voice came over the speakers, piped into the passenger area, "Attention ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We are taxing to the runway now. The menu for this flight is - nothing - leave shit back there and the chief will flip his lid, and today's in-flight movie is '48 Cries of 'Fuck!': the Aethersperm Story'." Though this announcement was made with the sound of engines winding up just outside the hull.

"Okay, here's the rough plan." Valerie motioned for the attention of the team and leaned forward in her seat, "We're going in through the maintenance tunnels. The station maintains low gravity in them so it could be a bit of a pain to navigate, but it'll be a straight shot to the dock without civilians or are targets seeing us coming. The tunnel should bring us right into the bay in question. Plenty of containers and equipment mean we should have plenty of cover - but it also means tight quarters if we run into hostiles."

She pointed to four members of the team, firing off their names, "Sparken, Bardur, Blackburn, and Blackhawk. You four go for the engine room. Cut fuel lines, sever the bridge's connection, or just blow the whole damn thing if we have to. Make noise and do some damage to get them worried about you. It'll suck, yeah, but it'll make it easier to get the ship locked down."

"Castiel and Darkjasper will be with me. We'll make our way to the bridge, lock the ship down, and from there we take neutralize the crew and regroup as we can. While we're doing that JANE is going to try remote access but if she can't do that then we pull it manually."

Then, almost as an afterthought, "Oh, and if you can maybe bring in one or two of the crew alive, good. Maybe we can ask some questions instead of just scouring computers. But don't stick your necks out. Any questions?"

It thankfully wouldn't be long before the shuttle would meet with a much larger Endurance-class transport in an orbital holding pattern where the crew would be able to stretch their legs during the short flight to the station.

Raphael finished getting ready as Zylis patched the team through the ports security feed. "Thank you JANE." Raphael said. "And thanks Zylis." The scan didn't showing anything out of the ordinary, but then it wouldn't be an effective ambush would it? In any case he will stay on his toes.

As they entered the shuttle. He sat down next to Zylis and waited for everyone to strap in.

As the chief entered they received their assignments. Raphael was assigned to the team with Zylis and the boss lady. He looked at Zylis. "Are you ready for this techie?" He asked with smirk.

"I think you chose the right four if you want chaos and mayhem in engineering," Simon said as he sat slouched forward on the shuttle bench.

He reviewed the bay from the images sent by JANE. He picked some possible routes and vantages that could allow the stealthiest approach. He was glad to be working with a group that was trained in the basics of stealth. Getting onto the ship will be far easier that way.

He thought of the assigned teams. Having two fireteams made the best tactical sense and he agreed with the choices. The heaviest fighting will be handled in Enginering and having the medic and demo agent there made the most sense.

"Aethersperm? Again? Every single time I get on a Nepleslian shuttle, there's always something about that fucking band... ugh! At least their music isn't total shit..." Zylis thought to himself, after hearing the pilot announce the "in flight" movie they wouldn't actually be watching. Then Valerie doled out the mission parameters and groupings, to which Zylis had given her his full and undivided attention. His eyes lowered to the floor and closed, wrapping his head around what her plan of action had come to be.

His hands fidgeted a bit with his helmet as he took a deep breath, beginning to clear his mind and focus on the coming task, "Four to distract and disable the ship, three to control and scour for any information. Try to capture one or two of their crew for interrogation. Make sure not to be the weakest link on the team..." His brow was furled slightly as he tried to consider what possibilities they may encounter, and ways to counter what would be thrown at them. Raphael managed to pull Zylis out of his thoughts with his question, Zylis looked to him and nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be. I hope the same for you and everyone else. I'm counting on the distraction team to cripple them as quickly as possible, so I can make sure I don't screw up my part."

Then to Valerie he offered, "Chief, I think this plan of action is sound. Blackburn and the others are more than capable for the task given, and I have faith we'll see this through."

Frost blue eyes scanned over everyone, gauging their readiness, eagerness, and any nervousness or anxiety there may have been. Some found themselves visibly excited, some turned to pride or arrogance, others becoming shaky or skittish. Not Zylis - he always turned inward, becoming quiet and almost cold-like. The greatest weapon he had with him wasn't the firearms or the grenades he brought, nor the tech he found he could manipulate like an appendage of his own body - no, it was his sharp mental focus when things turned serious that had kept him, and those around him, alive.

"Sparken, Bardur, Blackburn, and Blackhawk. You four go for the engine room. Cut fuel lines, sever the bridge's connection, or just blow the whole damn thing if we have to. Make noise and do some damage to get them worried about you. It'll suck, yeah, but it'll make it easier to get the ship locked down."

Val nodded her head at the order, "So basically we go in and fuck shit up. Got it boss lady." She looked to the other female on her team, flashing her a thumbs up in her heavy armor. She clumsily strapped herself into the shuttle, stowing her toolkit in a compartment and unslinging her shotgun to place it on her lap. Val liked to go over her weapons and equipment before a mission, but had neglected to do so in the armory. The shuttle flight proved enough time for her to visually inspect and function check her gear as the others made small talk. Approving of her gear she let out a sigh and rested her head back, trying to get some sleep before the mission. "I still think this waking up early stuff is Catgirl crap." She honestly enjoyed grumbling, taking a small satisfaction in others knowing how she thought of things.

Simon smirked at Val's comment, "Yeah, waking up with the birds is just wrong. But hey, some of the best views happen at sun up. Too bad that doesn't help us now. So, according to what the boss said, you're mechanically inclined? What brought you to the NNSO?"

Simon sat casually with horrible posture as he waited for Val's answer. He felt a little chit chat on the ride would help ease everyone.

Jasmine blinked a little at Valerie, not quite sure what to make of her at that moment. Then she laughed and shook her head, "Oh, 'Mum'...you are a riot!" Still chuckling, she added, "We are a team...a unit. Right now, y'all are more like a family to me. That right there makes you," she pointed to Valerie, "my 'Mum'. And it makes you, "she pointed to Val, "my sister. Nothin' more."

Once they walked out of the locker room, Jas made sure she had everything needed for her own load out. She even got some items to make her own flash-bangs and other non-lethal explosives. She was working on one that would only affect those not on her team, but that was still in its development stages back at her lab. For now, she'd have to deal with what was available to her.

As she listened to the status report from JANE, she could tell that they would need a lot of what she had as well as the gas. Just in case they were expecting the tear gas and had masks to protect themselves with. As for being there in time...we..time had been on their side so far...

============================

Once Jas was in the shuttle with the rest, she ensured her weapons were primed and ready, then got to work on the flash-bangs. She snickered at the "in-flight movie" choice, shaking her head and partly wishing she were able to really see it. Instead, she just hummed one of her favorite songs by them and continued working.

When Chief, as Jas thought of Valerie whenever they were in serious mode, made her orders clear, she couldn't help but nod and smile brightly, "Lots of noise and fun! Just my style!" She doesn't worry about getting one or two for questioning. If it happens, it happens. Otherwise, they just do what they are needing to in order to secure the ship.

Raphael shifted in his seat, considering Zylis's words. "Don't worry techie, I'm ready." He said in a low voice. "The plan itself is simple, but plans never withstand the battle. They will need to change and adapt." Raphael said as he looked off into space. "I will be prepared for anything. Besides," he said turning to Zylis with a grin. "you get the pleasure of working with the best infiltrator on the team. If anyone knows how to sneak through the narrow corridors of a ship, it's yours truly."

Zylis' ears twitched hearing Jas humming an Aethersperm song, probably not loud enough for everyone to hear, but loud enough for his sensitive Minkan ears to pick up. With an eyebrow raised, he'd look to her and listen for a few moments, possibly having been noticed and thought to be rude or something. After another moment he'd close his eyes, his chest swelling with a deep breath in and releasing a slow exhale. His mind began to fill with memories of his sisters and how they always hummed or sung whenever the chance presented itself. Granted it wasn't anything like Aethersperm, but very few people Zylis had been around seemed all that interested in music. It was oddly comforting to him, but in a way he didn't quite understand.

Raphael's response resonated with his original feelings about the mission. "You're right Castiel, we could have the greatest plan ever laid out for us, pretty much everything handed to us on a silver platter. This, of course, means absolutely nothing if we can't execute it as it needs... or be flexible and adapt if the situation calls for it." He looked to Raphael with a hint of a smirk, shaking his head. "Best infiltrator? We shall see snipes..." Zylis said to Raphael, feigning a scoff. It was a loose attempt at a bit of "playful banter", not an area Zylis was all that strong in.

With her eyes still closed, Val responded to Simon, "They pay a lot better than the marines, shit isn't as old and broken either. It's a pretty sweet gig." She lifted one eyelid to look at the other agent. "What about you?" Deciding she wasn't going to be getting any rest she sat up. She pulled her leg up and crossed it over the other, and crossed her arms against her chest.

Simon sat hunches forwards on the bench. For a seeming professional he had pretty poor posture and a very casual non-commital ait to him.

"I started my adulthood as an EMT and felt I wasn't doing enough. When I tried Law Enforcement all I saw were guys cutting corners. So I decided to get into the business of stopping those corner cutters. So far, life as an Agent has been mainly surveillance. I'm glad to be able to combine my passions of medicine and the law with all you fine agents."

Zylis looked to Simon, an eyebrow raised slightly. "Work as an EMT is just as noble a cause as being an Agent, perhaps even more so. Combining the two affords you an even greater capacity to save lives..." He paused, his voice taking on a slightly more serious and sharp tone. "But at the cost of there always being blood on your hands. Some of it will be in giving life, and some will be in taking it away. But there will always be blood, a necessary evil. Try to remember the noble cause you believe in that helped get you here. Because there will be a time when you look yourself in the mirror and wonder if those same ideals are what drives you, or if you've lost yourself in the process."

He wasn't trying to lecture, nor did he mean to overshadow everyone's positive vibe. Sighing lightly, he leaned back and closed his eyes. His thoughts moved back to his time as a Peacekeeper, and how the Second Mishhuvurthyar War changed everything. About how in the end their intention was to save lives and defend what was theirs, same as it always had been. And how they all failed miserably... Zylis shook his head, dismissing his past before it staked its claim in the present and robbed him and everyone around him of a future they were trying to protect.

"My apologies Simon, I didn't mean to blow you out the water like that..." His frost colored eyes looked about everyone, wondering just how many would disapprove of his outburst.

Raphael was a little taken aback at Zylis quick outburst. He could clearly see something troubling him. It was plaguing his face plan as day. As if he is off in the past, in a darker time. He switched his helmet frequency to Zylis and started speaking softly.

"Hey Zy. What up man? I know this might not be easy to talk about, and you just meet a little while ago. But I'm here for you." He smirked. "If your okay talking to an Elysian. You know us plague bringers, spreading our filth and what not." He laughed trying to cheer the techie up.
