Greetings all! I'm Mark, an 18 yo college student from Maryland, and am new to the forum RPG scene. That said, I've been playing pen and paper RPGs since middle school, though most were cut-and-paste fantasy with the occaisonal WH40k rpg thrown into the mix. I was looking for a new experience and managed to stumble across this site, and I have to say I'm impressed. I'm looking forward to exploring what seems to be an immense setting, and it's encouraging to a new player to see that it's all player created and driven.

Now, with the formalities out of the way, I haven't yet decided what sort of character I'd like to play yet. I've had a big interest in the Age of Sail navies for years, like the Hornblower and Aubrey-Maturin books, and so I'm curious if any current plots have that sort of feel to them. Beyond that, I'm just looking around and getting acquainted with the setting and planning out some character concepts.

See you all in the forums!

Welcome to SARP!!

Funny you should mention age of sail stuff. I have a huge interest in that too. I'm going back through the Aubrey—Maturin series, back on Desolation Island right now!

What ho! Welcome to SARP, my dear man. I do hope you'll bear a hand presently and light along your first character sheet, for there's much to be said for making hay while the iron's hot. As they say, time makes a pound of cure-- and we'll hope you'll stay out here longer than a dog watch. We'd hate your time here to be cur-tailed.

Ha! I amuse myself so! I daresay you bring out the beast in me-- aha!

You're very good, my dear man, please do stay and regale us with your tails-- or rather tales-- oh, how I amuse myself! But let's not have a slip between the cup and the sip-- do regale us with your tales in this world of what they tell me is 'scientific fiction'.

Another East-coaster! Yay!

Anyhoo, hallos, and welcome to our little corner of awesomesauce; have you ever read the Honor Harrington series by David Weber? Though unfortunately I haven't had the chance to read any of C.S. Forester's works, the HH books are often described as Hornblower in a sci-fi setting.

It's been a while since I last read anything from that series, but I remember it fondly as what solidified my interest in the Age of Sail. I read Master and Commander for the first time during a camp on an old tallship, so I guess it was meant to be, haha!

No I can't say that I have, but you've certainly piqued my interest. I'll be certain to check that series out, thanks for the suggestion!

Yay! We East-coasters have to stick together, haha!

I Love the honor harrington series.... I didn't know he did a piece with john ringo... cause I like him too so I can only imagine a book done by both of them to be great.

They did a series of 4 books, March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars and We Few. A series of military scifi novels, which I need to read sometime soon myself. :p

They're utterly fantastic. One of my favorite series, even if the rest of Ringo's stuff isn't even in my top 10.

I started with the Posleen stuff and then moved to their collaboration. The March books are some of my favorites, and you can definitely see their influence on a certain character...
