Hello everyone, a pleasure to be joining this community. I've been reading the wiki for several days and I'm just stunned by the sheer amount of content there. Roleplaying sites age like wine, don't they xD

I have some questions about the character I plan to create before I make something stupid and waste everyone's time. I've chosen a NH-28 Nekovalkyrja, because I want a dulled, robot-like personality for this character and this model is the closest it gets. However, they seem to have no application outside of battle so I was thinking of a "custom" NH-28 that's also fitted with all sorts of gubbins needed to repair ships and assume the technician role as well (I'm looking to join YSS Aeon btw). Is that sort of thing allowed?

Sadly, the wiki article on the NH-28 is very small and doesn't provide information about their loadout and such, I though it would be different from a normal Neko since 28 can't operate normal weapons for example. Any additional tips and pointers are also appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any help ^^

Hey Priscilla, welcome to SARP. We got fun and games.

Have you tried coming onto our IRC channel? We don't bite (unless your into that kind of thing, then a few of us do). The night crew is on at the moment, but there's still plenty of people to help you get started.

I'm not an expert on Neko, but I think the NH-28 might be a resricted model. Not sure though, you'll have to ask a mod. The standard model is currently the NH-29, you should be able to play this model without any trouble.

As far as plots go, the Aeon is a good choice. I play with Nashoba myself and can assert that he is an extremely reliable and confident GM that I place much faith in. Especially when he can put up with my shenanigans. You'll have to ask him about openings in his plot.

As a side note, for many first-time players we also have Fort Ready, which is where you can learn the ropes of our posting rules without getting blasted for any mistakes. It's hit a bit of a snag at the moment and isn't mandatory, but it might be something you want to consider. Its usually pretty short, only lasting a few months, so you should be on the Aeon afterwards with no trouble.

Hope you have fun. ;)

Hello Priscilla,

Welcome to SARP.

I am Nashoba, one of the site admins and the GM of the YSS Aeon plot.

The NH-28 is not really intended as a player character as evidenced by the small amount of information. That and you would be missing out on roleplaying in non-combat situations.

NH-29's have a wide range of personalities. You could easily have her start out with a dull robot like personality, and have her develop as she grows.

Fort Ready is an option but not a requirement. However, since you have stated that you intend to join the Aeon, you might be better served by joining that for the immediate future. As the Aeon is currently away on a mission.

If there is anything I can do to help you, please feel free to PM me. And as Jimmy said come into the IRC most folks there can answer questions as well.

I can understand being told to just take the NH-29 would be unsatisfying... but from what I get what you're looking for is not to be an overpowered character, and rather have a more deadpan and detached personality.

That's actually possible for you to get.

I'm going to bring up the NH-29 again, but only as an example. On my plotship, I have this nekovalkyrja NPC character named Nimura.

Nimura was a nekovalkyrja born as a ship sprite (a ship sprite is when a ship creates a nekovalkyrja for the purpose of helping to sustain itself and its crew's functions). Most ship sprites start out with a functional mental template of skills and ideal traits for their jobs, and they generally grow and progress from there.

Nimura, though, didn't progress like that. Nimura was more attached to the idea that she was a tool - the more classic perception of a nekovalkyrja being a weapon. She kind of chucked away most of her personality in order to dedicate herself to her duties, and turned out being more concerned with logic and efficiency. Anything sentimental was excess baggage she didn't need.

As an NPC, I also made Nimura something of a genius. Through power-of-plot, Nimura was generally always successful at whatever she did and was usually annoyingly right. She also was very blunt, lacked tact and other people skills. As a GM, I used her both as an asset and a foil against her team leaders and team-mates whom were ambivalent between seeing her as an huge asset or as a difficult-to-deal-with wildcard.

Granted, the traits shown in the paragraph above are not traits that you as a roleplayer can approach (nor would they tremendously indulge your character to her future commanding officers); but my point is that is you want a nekovalkyrja with a more robotic personality, it's possible to portray a late-bloomer-neko personality-wise.

Welcome to SARP!

I'm playing a similar personality for my Fort Ready character (Shizuko Dahl). She is a very dry and exact individual, for now at least.

I do have a more computer-like character elsewhere, and it is fairly difficult to participate in non-combat RP unless other characters start the conversations. It may sound like fun, and it can be interesting if you have characters in the plot that would be interested interacting with the taciturn type, otherwise it may be difficult to stay involved between battles.

Thank you for your help and warm welcome everyone!

I haven't noticed Fort Ready, looks like that's indeed the place to start. I'll ask a few more question here since I'm often borrowing my boyfriend's computer and would rather prefer the answers where I can always see them, instead of having to send chatlogs back and forth.

I'd like to know the extent of a NH-29 customizability lore-wise. When it comes to robots, I like the weird-looking ones, with evil spiky bits and such. So I was thinking of making a normal NH-29 on the technician job, and have her gradually replace and upgrade her bodyparts with mechanical ones as she becomes more skilled, more engrossed in technology and all that malarkey. I'd like to know the extent of what's allowed in this department.

While I'm at it, I've noticed that there's no external artwork on this site whatsoever. Is there a rule that dictates all art must be original/commissioned, or can I borrow existing pictures for a character?

You're right in your observations regarding artwork. You can't reference something that's not on the site. There are potent law-oriented reason why the webmaster must maintain this standard.

Also, your expectation of 'augmenting' your character with mechanical bits would go contrary to nekovalkyrja and Yamatai in general - they believe in advanced bio-engineering mostly (their 'artificial lifeforms are artificially created and integrated digital technology, but their prowess is mostly organic).

This being the case, perhaps you should give more interest to the Nepleslians and the Freespacers. The former has a liking for cybernetics, and the latter like cybernetics so much that some of them are actually just robots (I think those are termed 'Sentient Intelligences').

The above two may suit your character creation expectations better.

Since Fred mentioned them, here's the rules on image use: It's okay to (text) link to external images, but please don't hotlink them. Additionally, it is forbidden to upload images you do know have the rights to.

Fred's also spot-on about the augmentations. Nekos also have strong immune systems/self-repair biases (increasing chances of prosthetics rejection), and are essentially on par with most cyborgs anyway, they just don't show it with external mechanical bits.

The Synthetic Intelligences (Type Five Freespacers) are all-digital entities, usually from copying neural pathways from organic brains. Some start out in Type Four Freespacer automata bodies before being moved to networks.

Type Four Freespacers are nearly full-conversion cyborgs (leaving a brain in a box at the least). Biological Freespacers (Types Three and Two) are have varying levels of cybernetics, from just the installed-at-birth Mindware to the full-conversion types. Culturally...well, let's just say that common nickname is "Nuclear Space Hippy".

And, as far as the major SARP playable factions go, they can be found listed here (if you haven't found it already!). The best sources for information on any particular faction are their respective Faction Managers, which are as follows:

Wes: Yamatai Star Empire
Kokuten: Democratic Impirium of Nepleslia
Exhack: The Iromakuanhe Astral Commonwealth
Abwehran Commander: Abwehran Star Empire
Ira: Gartagen Union

...and myself, with Strangelove, for the Free State.

Huh. I hope that all helps and that I didn't go overboard with the linking of things ^_^;

Anyway, most of the relevant Freespacer information is linked in the "nuclear space hippies" thing up there, and if you have other questions you can send me a PM via the bulletin board system or let someone in IRC know that you're looking for me if I'm not there. I'd be glad to help you get set up!

So many interesting factions, this choice will be a hard one xD I think I'm going to make a Freespacer, but since there are no Freespacer plots, my options appear to be the Abwehran 69th Paramilitary, the Nepleslian 4th AASP Fleet and the Origin Industry OIF Antuan. I don't know Origin's take on robots though, do they accept them (or maybe manufacture any)?

We already had Freespacer on Atuan. But her player had to leave sadly. She was not robot, but she was freespacer. But if you want to ask just PM CadetNewb. He is GM of Atuan and he is pretty good guy, just type him and talk to him. He can answer all your question and you can work something out.

I heard guns, beer, testosterone, boobs and 4th Fleet! The great and glorious Sigma has arrived to lead you to the next suicide mission!

Join 4th Fleet and together, we will rule the battlefield like angels of death!

*serious face* As the others said, welcome to SARP. Beware, madness lurks behind every profile page. Some more so than others. All the plots you are interested in are good ones.

Fort Ready has only just started so it may still be an option.

Yo! Welcome to the SARP, Priscilla. It's good to have new players. I'm part of the 4th Fleet AASP myself, it'd be great to see some new players there! C:

I sent a PM to CadetNewb but he hasn't replied, so I'll try the 4th fleet next. Madness is a good thing in my book so looks like that's the right place. Going to begin making my character now, but don't expect me to get it right the first time >_>

Cadet is a bit busy now. His friend is getting married so he is helpin out. He will be free agai in matter of few days.
