How do we use computers in the SARP?

How do different races use computers?

Volumetrics? Keyboards? Mice? Touch screens? Neural?
I'm not just wondering the best, I'm asking the bog average that civilians would know.

What would people see and have no idea how to use?

Traditional Lorath computing devices actually rely upon conventional keyboards laid out in a split configuration, keys are assigned characters representing the most common components of Lorath words, and can be used to form complex words in a method comparable to kana-to-kanji conversion.

Furthermore, the average keyboard interface includes a stylus pad placed between the key groups, allowing for writing, illustration, or pictographs. For pointing purposes, a trackball is often the method of choice, and can be embedded into the keyboard interface.

Like this, but with a touch screen instead of a track pad.

We're classy like that.

On an interesting note, Helashio prefer input methods typical of tablet devices, they like pictures and icons.

In Yamatai, computers are generally using four types of user input, by order of commonality:

1. Direct wireless link (no hands required). Tell the refrigerator to CRUSH THE ICE, WITH YOUR MIND.
2. Touch screens. Old but reliable. Popular with non-digital-minded species who have fingers.
3. Volumetric projections
4. Voice commands, interpreted by AI

Note that wirelessly connected equipment may use augmented reality interfaces.

Some devices may be featureless, as they are intended to be connected via AR by both humanoids and species that don't have hands. The Type 36 communicator is one such example.

Would certain Neko and Yamataians also like 'Old School' input devices like keyboards for their novelty? Like how Tom Paris from Voyager had the Delta Flyer's control station outfitted with knobs, dials and levers. Just because they like something retro?

Possibly. Perhaps they could make those types of keyboards using a personal 3-D printer.

You mean like this and this?

That, or their could be some kind of store that sells 'Retro' Keyboards and the like with similar functions to their volumetric or touchscreen counterparts for the discerning Yamataian and Neko.

The type of input, is partly what kind of function, the other is personal. Technically most SAOY people could fly a shuttle or a ship by mentally, but from a writing perspective, it is better to cover the actions with physical items.

This is why many of my characters use an ICP for its touch screen. Some folks just like the physical feedback of controls, others just like the push the button approach.
