Well you asked for help so that it a good place to start.
I am Nashoba, one of the Site Admin's and one of Game Masters for the site.
Don't let SARP overwhelm you. Yes there is a lot, but you don't need to understand all of it.
New Players' Guide is a great place to start, it explains the basics of the site. You have lots of options. You can dive into one of our Open Roleplay which do not require a formal character. The Open Roleplay is a bit more wide open and can even include stories that are not truly part of SARP.
You can also create a formal character and Join any of the many plots we have available. So the first thing you need to do is decide which form you want to go with, and then make a choice as to which plot. We have plots for Human type characters - Nepleslian, Advanced bio-engineered species Yamatai, We also have a number of Alien Species, The Neshaten, Lorath, Hidden Sun Clan which all have plots.
We know you will have questions, and we'll gladly answer them. Also you can always go to our IRC and folks there can answer many questions.

Alright, then it looks like you know what you're doing. To reiterate what @Nashoba said, the New Players' Guide will most likely tell you whatever you need to know and then some. I look forward to perhaps roleplaying alongside you.
