Martial arts of the Star army?

Hey, im just a bubbling pot of questions today, heres another. Does the star army use martial arts that are based on this worlds? such as karate, judo, kickboxing and kung-fu? or does it have its own brand. Im sure this has been asked a hundred times but the search function is broken for some reason and fails to work for me.

I know the nekovalkyrja have their own style of 'flying martial arts' and I'd expect things to bwe skewed toward Japanese themes for the Star Army of Yamatai. As for the Neplesians and other races, can't be sure.

Note: as far as I know the neko's only have a specified style of swordsmanship but no martial arts as far as I know, I'll keep an eye out for you though.

If you take a look in the first Sakura thread, there's a mention about a neko named 'Fujiko' going into a hovering attack stance. I will quote :

Wes said:
"You can't refuse me," Fujiko observed, rising a half meter off the ground and going into one of those Nekovalkyrja flying martial arts stances.

So, there is a flying martial arts that nekos seem to practice, thanks to their hovering ability. Fujiko seemed to be one of Wes' NPC characters too, so that comes from the big man himself. ^_^;

Well, that covers the Nekovalkyrja well enough, but as for the rest of us land locked losers, there needs to be something that doesn't rely upon flying, I'm afraid :D

What is likely to be taught to SA crewmembers that are expected to remain shipboard? There's not really so much time available to them to master a full martial art, most of which are a bit too flashy for a combat situation at the best of times.

Neplesians in particular seem poorly suited to mental discipline required. ^^;

I guess ti's always been assumed that humans would learn fighting styles that are around in our real life like jujitsu, akido, and kung fu.

any chance we could rename them to add a more orignal feel to star army martial arts? perhaps create a star army fighting style?

Nepleslians (at least planetary soldiers) learn a no-frills "commando" style martial art that focuses on disabling or killing your opponent. Drop all the fancy dances and just work on the striking/grappling arts.

Basically, what Wes said but with allowance for dirty fighting too. :)

So I know that a few months ago (maybe even a year?) this topic was brought up for @Wes and the Star Army of Yamatai. In fact, I believe they now have a pretty fleshed out grouping on their combat styles and martial arts that was developed in Reynold's school plot. That said, I was wondering if people with experience in the military (such as @Wes and @Kim) would be willing to bump heads with martial artists like myself (I took Taekwondo for years before I became an average househusband) and the FMs of Nepleslia (@Gunhand4171 and @Ametheliana) to go about creating a Nepleslian fighting style?

It makes sense that they would have a "standard" trained military fighting style, likely in an American military fashion of raw effectiveness (going for kill moves), rather than a style of martial arts. Essentially, a combined fighting style that Nepleslians could utilize in the rare instances of fighting up-close. The support for this makes even more sense to me, considering we got the ID-SOL on their way back. And we all know they like to rip people to pieces and beat them with those limbs!

I've made many martial arts for SARP before. One more would be a cake walk. Any discussion is highly encouraged.

Didn't last year's necromancy event spawn this article? Let's get some expansion going! Sub-articles! Etc!

As Navy, my combat experience and training comes from Muy Thai, kick boxing and Brazilian Jiu jitsu that I trained on my own time. Army has started doing combatives which is more Krav Maga. One of the security offic da in my bah class in Yokosuka got to go to Israel to train. They also did a Krav Maga class. :) efficiency of movement is really key. And adaptation.

Well, it could definitely form a base for the class/fighting style. As I highlighted to Koku/Bilgecrank, one good real-world parallel of the idea is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_Martial_Arts_Program (MCMAP). It essentially combines core fundamentals/movements of various martial arts to make a cohesive and functional one. If you look up videos of it in action, it's fairly effective and even allows a soldier to take on professional fighters with significant skill. That's the general idea, I think, behind Nepleslians even making a fighting style.
