YSS Eucharis, Armor Bay

Junko put the comm down on the bench and set it to volumetric display. Above her rotated an image of a Mindy suit, layered into its components. Armor layer, the fleshy interior of the suit lining and all the weapon and power systems wired through out. Thus far, the cutting edge of Yamatai infantry armor.

But it could be more.

"Start new project file. Designate as... Valkyrie." She commanded the device.

Began peeling away armor layers, looking where to begin modification. On her own, she might have an okay idea or two. What she wanted was a second head involved. Someone who made a habit of tinkering with their gear.

Hopefully, Candon got the message. Until then, she made a note to change the Neko-Ears style comm array on the helmet to a rabbit ear design.

"So what improvements were you hoping to achieve?" Candon asked as he entered the armor bay. With the complexity of the Mindy 4 he was glad to be helping, the first thing he always did with new armor was strip it down to its bolts and put it back together. He knew the suit better than himself and was preparing a SARA submission as well.

Junko nodded to Candon as he entered. One of the few people outside the infantry she respected. Plus, his habit of tinkering with his gear made him ideal for this. Practical experience not just on the mechanics side, but on how things worked out in the field.

"Looking to make a dedicated close combat suit. Something made to get in and tussle." Junko explained. "Speed is good, but I'm thinking we can tweak the response of mobility. Stick some vectored thrust nodes along the body for quicker, sharper changes in direction and momentum. Frontal armor will need a boost, probably something ablative to reduce weight drag. Upgrade the teleportation unit for less downtime. Reserve batteries, disposable maybe."

She sketched out a rough diagram of what she was describing. It would probably require overhauling a lot of internal components. Much higher production standard.

"I need some means to get in close, reposition as often as necessary and mitigate the higher damage risk with close quarters." She summed up. "Some of the tertiary systems, like the photonics, can be removed if necessary. Ultimately, if it doesn't help it kill, its non-essential."

"I think I may have a simpler idea," Candon offered as he came to stand in front of her Mindy, "the M2-4 is by far the best Mindy for close quarters engagements. No system modifications are going to improve your reaction timing, you just need more time in the suit. Learn to move in sync with your grav drive and pretty soon you'll be moving as fast as you can think."
The volumetric projectors came online as he made a telepathic connection through the armor rack.
"So here's what I'm thinking, you want to get close, right? That's easy, the teleporter can hold its charge after being primed for hours but needs a couple minutes to recharge unless we mount an M2-G3000 Shoulder Capacitor."
A three-dimensional wireframe representation of the corresponding capacitor appeared on the right shoulder hardpoint.
"It'll refresh your teleporter in something like two seconds, it's amazing. Now you can double cycle your teleporter essentially enabling you to hit and run.

"Now some quick theory about building your combat rig, there are two directions you can go in terms of Firepower. The first is generally called damage over time or DPS if you're a gamer like Masumi. These builds are best for Gunners or General Infantry who expect to be caught in an extended firefight. On the other end of the spectrum you find rigs like mine that focus on delivering as much damage in as short a time as possible, I call it damage per salvo. The problem with this type of build is that your damage output is not sustainable.

"So with the basics down let's finish this build. You're going to want to get in and out of engagements as quickly as possible, I'm going to recommend a salvo focused build. Nothing kills an enemy PA faster than driving a saber rifle straight into its reactor. Best part is that when you're not hit and running it's extremely versatile. If you keep it's battery topped off through your forearm cable you'll never have to worry about ammo consumption. I believe this would be your best choice for a primary weapon."
Another volumetric wireframe model appeared next to the armor.
"As for the open shoulder I suggest the M2-W3001 Aetheric Pulse Cannon. There's no point teleporting into a group of enemies if you're not close enough to use this. Set it to automatically target and engage whatever you aren't attacking. You may be able to get a second kill with it or at least get some heads down.
The wireframe image appeared on the left shoulder.
"Now assuming nothing goes wrong during your 'hit' the running part should be easy, but just in case something goes wrong it may be helpful to have an M2-P2904 Barrier Shield Module equipped and active. It can take a beating so you don't have to."
A wireframe of the barrier Shield module appeared on the back of the armor suit, not easily visible but still there.

Junko listened intently, head bobbing as she kept up. Part of her wanted to go on the thruster idea anyways rather than let time and patience sort things out, but interrupting would have been rude. He did make a point, or rather, he made her realize something. Maybe her current load out concept was too fixated on killing potential.

"The first is generally called damage over time or DPS if you're a gamer like Masumi."

"Nerd." She snarked quietly.

"Barrier might work, though it'd mean I'd have to choose between teleport power or endurance in a pinch. It also takes away a bit launcher, which we're going to need down on that mechanical planet." Junko turned the wireframe around, thinking. "The pulse isn't meaningfully different from the ASBR shots, though. Might be worth it to use a grenade launcher. Less ammo, but it can clear crowds much more effectively. Ought to come in handy when we run into more Rixx."

"Think we could still upgrade the armor? Put some more over the vital sections?" A pause. "Maybe swap out the forearm weapons for glove mounted plasma blades? What about weaponizing the feet?"

Then she adjusted the wireframe of the rabbit ear helmet design. Widened it out along the back of the head, just to give it space. Then she added a rough diagram of what she was thinking. Claws, spaced evenly on the boot toe.

"The armor is about as good as you're going to get without restricting your flexibility and your chest is covered by a solid piece of Zesu. It's hard to top that so I'll refer you to my friend KEAA."
Supplemental armored tiles joined the volumetric collage of parts.
"They help to diffuse kinetic energy from an attack. But in reality the best armor is to just not get shot. Now while the automatic grenade launcher might seem like a good crowd control weapon it's major drawback is ammo consumption. It's a fantastic support weapon and definitely has its role but you cannot carry enough ammo for an expedition unless you equip an equipment pack. Additionally, you have splash damage to account for so it is completely impractical for close-quarters engagements. The ASBR can penetrate most anything and has both a rapid-fire and beam firing mode, so one shot or beam has the capacity to strike multiple targets. It could mow down a Rixxicor hoard faster and more efficiently than the grenade launcher. Basically, it's better when you build your loadout around the grenade launcher.

"Now I have no idea what you're smoking but those rabbit ears are by far the most efficient way to piss off the Shôshô. Lose 'em and we'll pretend this never happened."
With a swipe of his hand the bunny ears disappeared in the new projection standing alone appeared.

"Now claws I can work with. Here's a mount I'm thinking of that should be able to carry two Aether Sabers, fits around your forearm weapon, and plugs into your forearm charging cable. A single actuator will allow the mount to move a few degrees so your hand should never touch it while it's on. This would decimate armor at close range but I would put it in your offhand because it would probably hit your rifle. A Yama-dura shell to protect it. What do you think?"

"I've had that same ear shot off twice in as many missions on this ship. The Shosho doesn't have to worry about missing a comm that could save her life in the field. I'll be sending her paperwork for approval before I alter the base armor, anyways." Junko countered. If it kept her alive, it could help keep her squad alive, Hanako's personal opinion be damned. Moving it to one ear on the opposite side was not being unreasonable.

"Two sabers per arm, right?" Junko asked. "Would I keep this gauntlet on the arm and just pop it in place whenever I drop my actual rifle, or have it on the waist hardpoint? Because I can see it clanking a lot on the waist." She toyed around with the wireframe thoughtfully. Experimentally brought up a volumetric prop and mock-flicked the claws from standby to ready.

She wasn't entirely sold on the KEAA. If only because she recalled a quick bit about high energy fire back blasting onto the wearer. Had a bad feeling about that staggering her at the wrong moment. Made a note to consider it in some aspect, but try and work with what she had.

"What about repurposing the bit cameras, putting them around the suit? Panoramic vision would be handy in a melee. Biggest drawback would be just adapting to the new perspective." Junko suggested. They could rig up a test with some bits and tape, run an obstacle course.

"Well if you'd stop getting shot that wouldn't an issue, would it?" He muttered.

"The mounting brackets I just designed would need to be realigned and wired in every time they're equipped so they would need to be attached and removed on the ship. Also, they're kind heavy, Jax might be able to shed some weight."

Candon was a bit confused first but thought he knew what she was talking about, "The Mindy has had panoramic vision for as long as I can remember. It uses your volumetric system's cameras. The only problem is interpreting that point of view. Biologically we are predators and like most predators we have forward facing eyes with limited peripheral vision. Our brain is constantly translating what we see and panoramic vision is so different from how we're designed that it is difficult for us to translate a 360 degree field of vision. But there is another way to accomplish what you want. You have to learn to see without your eyes by tapping directly into the suit's sensor feed... go ahead and suit up, I'll show you what I mean. You'll love this."

Candon pulled his shirt off as he made his way to his own armor. Just like Masumi he'd show Junko the best way to see the world.

YSS Eucharis, PA does not stand for "Party Away"

Junko's hearing was sharp, though, and she picked up on that. She gave the spook a long, serious glare from the side of her eyes.

Momentarily, she began brewing up a message to Jax about the claw-mounts, then reconsidered. Maybe take a look at some of the older model hardware. Or modify the existing projectors into a beam weapon. Either case, weren't rushing fast enough this couldn't get done before the next mission.

"Haven't had a lot of freedom to experiment with the suit." Junko explained, feeling a little small all of a sudden. "Been sticking with what works. Which is why this talk is probably so necessary."

Already in her classic pilot suit, she practically slipped into the Mindy. Popped the helmet down and confirmed the seal. They probably weren't going out in the black, but it was a good habit. Stepped clear of the rack and waited out in the open for Candon to finish suiting up.

Experimentally, she did poke around and found...

"Oh, hey. Their it is." Junko remarked. "Huh. Panoramic views not that bad."

YSS Eucharis, PA Bay

"Panoramic view isn't bad, it's just kinda… antiquated? I think that's the best way I can put it. I find difficult to judge depth with it," Candon responded from inside his helmet. His armor never left the rack. He wasn't going anywhere so he didn't see the point in dismounting, "Alright, I am going to open a telepathic link to you that will let you see what I am- um, 'looking at' isn't the phrase. I'll- I'll be rendering it for you so it'll be a fixed point of view but this is the concept, no two people seem to do it the same. It's really disorienting from another person's perception so I'd recommend locking or securing your Mindy somehow so that if you lose your balance you won't fall or start walking into stuff."

The link was opened for her to join. It would take over her senses of perception and replace it with infinite nothing.
"Now this is only a visual representation of what I see. Keep in mind that when you're doing this for yourself you will not see anything visual. You will basically just know it's there in real time."

The blank space was now filled with a normal view from Candon's helmet.
"This is normal forward facing vision."
The scenery stretched out and became heavily distorted as he now saw 360° around himself.
"This is panoramic, naturally everything is compressed but you'll notice an ever so slight wave now and then. That is because the armor provides this view through the projectors which are not arranged in a perfect sphere. It's probably not enough to matter but it's just something I noticed. I've had more collisions while using this view mode than any other."

"Now, this is what I see," he announced as his point of view became more of a third-person view, "but it's better than just this. I can only show you from this one sided rendering of what I'm seeing. I can 'see' everything from nearly all directions in only as much detail as my armor can physically produce. With the LSP equipped there is little that I can't see. Watch…"

The frame of view moved through the wall into the kitchen where 'someone' was cleaning dishes. The room was not in detail and was represented by a wireframe of only what the sensors and radar could see.
"It's not pretty but I can see where the enemy is from anywhere. This kind of incomplete model is also behind your armor," he explained and demonstrated as he focused behind her Mindy where there was only a wireframe mapping of the tangible, solid items she had equipped, "it is because my volumetric cameras cannot see behind you that I won't be able to gauge color and super fine details but at least I can see that you have something there. Again, when you do it you won't be looking to know what's around you, you'll just know.

"Your turn, you try it."

YSS Eucharis, All Armor All The Time

Junko shrugged and headed back to the rack. Thought about what he'd said about panoramic. Maybe it was quite simply a hardware issue? Neko were built for the Star Army in a way no other combat body could ever really match.

She accepted the link before her mind could wander on some depressing tangent. Seeing from someone elses perspective wasn't new. She'd checked other Neko's feed a few times. This new way of seeing, though, was novel.

Then she tried it.

She relied on her sensors all the time, so she recognized all this. She'd just never gotten to using it as the way to see, though. It was... like an out of body experience. Her body was here, but she could also perceive it as a place in relation to other spaces, not just a static point.

"Its... interesting. I'm not using the leader pack, so I'm not getting everything you did." Junko commented. Then she unhooked off the rack again and tried some basic navigation. Kept her feet going, but she bumped into the work bench nearby.

She could tell distance precisely now, it was just not how she was used to judging distance. The subtle cues were vastly different. Enough to give her some need to practice this mode. Navigated back to the open center of the room.

"Its... interesting, but I'll need some practice before I can call it mission-ready." Junko finally decided. "Its gonna come down to personal taste more than anything, I think."

YSS Eucharis, PA Bay

"It took me years to learn how to use it effectively... that and necessity," Candon offered as he opened his armor back up, "at first I would do it from cover using my squad mate's sensors and leader's LSP to help determine an enemy's capabilities. Now it's how I always use armor. You choose what's best for you. We're all people. Not everyone is ready to fight like a machine, it's unnatural."

YSS Eucharis, PA Bay

Junko laughed at that remark, his calling it unnatural. It wasn't a happy kind of laugh at all. Too sharp, like an animal barking than cheer. Bitter, a bit loud, like he'd walked into some hidden joke.

"Unnatural never stopped anyone before. Not about digital lifeforms, brain backups or the mass produced super soldiers walking around." Junko remarked. "You might have seen them running around lately. Bright hair colors, funny face markings and playing with balls of yarn."

Switched back to the panoramic view, letting her perception shift back into her body properly. Shifted her arms and noted some minor detail variance, wobbles in the image. Nothing that'd distract her in the field, but worth noting regardless. Headed back for the rack, hooking her suit back up and climbing out.

"Lesse. That just leaves weaponizing the feet. Low power laser projectors, maybe." She scrolled past some wireframe of the boots. Then to what appeared to be...an aether-powered chainsaw as a melee weapon. The file name on it was just a series of expletives.
