The one advantage most fighters and shuttles have over power-armors are their speed. The T4 Fox combat aeroshuttle's FTL is twice as fast as a Mindy armor, which make long-range transits much more feasible to them and increases their effective range.
The Mindy's sublight speed of .65c isn't all that good, considering that the Super PHALANX can hit .99c. However, the speed differential become somewhat irrelevant due to the Mindy's primary weapon being capable of hitting things at up to 1 AU. That's far more than any weaponry even it's sister model, the Kylie, has.
Personally, I believe that while the Lorath will be able to progress some by designing their first aerospace fighters, it isn't going to really make them much of a match against the BAD THINGS OUT THERE(TM). They'll need to get inertialess movement capability of their own not to be limited to dogfighting while possible opponents would have free-form constant speed (no acceleration) movement and longer ranged weapons.
If I were in charge of leading the Lorath space program and wanting them to become self-sufficient, I'd build up my space assets to be able to properly mine their star system and gain ressources to develop further while under the umbrela of the Star Army since they are terribly vulnerable due to their nebula's reaction to super-heavy weapons.
Build up ressource gathering assets, then work on stamping out glaring weakneses and then, once your technology has progresed enough not to make anything you make third-rate in the YSE, go for making a set of decent combat units.
