New Starfighter?

I would like to design a new kind of space fighter that would bring back good old fashioned fighter to fighter dofights! Any comments would be helpful!

Hey, if you're going for that idea, come over to the Lorath, we need to develop a military space branch, and fighters would be the way we'd go.

If you are going to design a fighter focus should probably be placed on an atmospheric fighter or a heavy space fighter. The traditional air superiority fighter went the way of the dodo once miniaturization technology allowed a suit to have the same capabilities as a fighter. Suits were smaller so they required less energy to get them moving and were a smaller target to hit.

Designing one for the Lorath wouldn't be a bad idea as their tech level is still low.

It should also be mentioned that the sheer speeds and maneuverability that FTL-capable, inertia-nulled craft can do make dogfights rather rare, especially since fighters don't get out of the range of their home starship's weaponry, which in many cases could easily destroy hundreds of fighters every second.

Of course, a "heavy strike" kind of fighter would be exceptional. A small craft able to evade a bulk of heavy weapons, yet at the same time could deliver a carrier killing blow. >_>; Lorath call dibs!

<3 F-15 Strike Eagle, I love thee! <3

I was planning on making a kind of ship that would be dangerous to Power Armour pilots!

However maybe a planatary defense Atmospheric fighter would not be a bad idea, that could also be dangerous to power armours trying to attack!

Doc tell me more about the Lorath, what are they?

the Lorath are a humanoid race that has advanced technology in many fields except for aerospace applications and focused beam weapons, But they do have the ability to learn quickly.

Soon the Lorath may be entering into a treaty with Yamatai, thus they will have access to technological schematics for advanced weapons and devices, thus they would be able to apply such to their own aerospace programs. Additionaly the Lorath are a race that has a strong will to defend their own selves, and not be dependant upon others, so they will most likely not have a large Star Army garrison on their planet, so custom fighter squadron and a new series of powered armor would be ideal for them. And I personally as the main tech writer for the Lorath would love to have a heavy fighter as a backbone to the Lorath fleet... I can just imagine the hit and run missions. B)

Well my plan is to design some agile fighter craft able to deal damage to power armour, other fighters and small scale damage against capatal ships, most likely I will go through the design with Rob to fune tune it, if you want to use the fighters that's cool, I will make them for the Lorath!

The one advantage most fighters and shuttles have over power-armors are their speed. The T4 Fox combat aeroshuttle's FTL is twice as fast as a Mindy armor, which make long-range transits much more feasible to them and increases their effective range.

The Mindy's sublight speed of .65c isn't all that good, considering that the Super PHALANX can hit .99c. However, the speed differential become somewhat irrelevant due to the Mindy's primary weapon being capable of hitting things at up to 1 AU. That's far more than any weaponry even it's sister model, the Kylie, has.

Personally, I believe that while the Lorath will be able to progress some by designing their first aerospace fighters, it isn't going to really make them much of a match against the BAD THINGS OUT THERE(TM). They'll need to get inertialess movement capability of their own not to be limited to dogfighting while possible opponents would have free-form constant speed (no acceleration) movement and longer ranged weapons.

If I were in charge of leading the Lorath space program and wanting them to become self-sufficient, I'd build up my space assets to be able to properly mine their star system and gain ressources to develop further while under the umbrela of the Star Army since they are terribly vulnerable due to their nebula's reaction to super-heavy weapons.

Build up ressource gathering assets, then work on stamping out glaring weakneses and then, once your technology has progresed enough not to make anything you make third-rate in the YSE, go for making a set of decent combat units.

Designing these fighters will open up a new side of RPing for star army, think of them as B wings from star wars, massivly powerful weaponry, however they will have the speed and agility to fend of power armours, also they will be useful for hit and run tactics, strafing ground targets and weakining defenses for an infanty assault.

Essentially creating a super-one-man-ship-able-to-kick-the-arse-of-current-power-armor-technology.

That already exists, or something close to it does. It's called a Fox T4 combat aeroshuttle. Making something stronger than that is called a 'warship'.

No, I said defend it's self, It main task will be strafing ground tagerts and hit and run, therefore taking out defenses that would kill infatry soldiers and also as a first line of defense for planatary defense organisations.

Do you do nothing but have a go at people?

Actually I shall be designing it with Rob whom I believe is VERY good at these things so the ship should actually be feasable and pretty good.

Don't expect to make something great every time, especially with a ground attack aircraft which dosen't really have a use in this RP with the current level of military technology when that role is already well covered with orbital artillery and powered armors.

*sigh*

If you want to make a launch/deliver payload/withdraw craft whom would be able to survive power armors, there are simple ways you can do so.

1- Make sure your craft has a very powerful FTL drive system, 5000c or more. It's a potent way to make sure that power armors and other units cannot get their hands on you since you'll slip in and out of their effective combat range before they can compute a targeting solution.

2- Having active stealth capabilities does increase your chances of getting into attack posture, delivering your payload and withdrawing in one piece.

3- Have powerful enough shielding to survive attacks from weaponry ordinarely issued to power armors and other small crafts. This includes light railguns, mini-missiles and light plasma/aether-based weaponry. If you can have your fighter survive a few hits, than you stand a better chance of having your fighter do it's job.

Succesfully dogfighting against an inertialess combat unit such as the Mindy fighter or the Fox T4 is an impossible solution since those units don't actually have a defenite facing. You cannot outmaneuver them as they can change direction and firing arcs on a whim. While you try to get them in your firing arc while maneuvering and dodging, they only have to avoid your fire - no need to worry about maneuvering since they can fire at you when they want. In fact, they might even take advantage of your limited firing arcs and get into your blind spot to add insult to injury.

Powerful FTL, High grade shields, stealth (which usually means cloaking device in his setting) means you are going to end up with a corvette sized unit rather than a lightweight fighter.

FTL systems are fairly useless because you can piggy back on your mother ship, interdiction fields will shut down your FTL on small crafts, and the atmosphere will destroy you when you make an FTL attempt in real space unless you are supercavitating.

A design needs to be made to fill a purpose rather than creating a purpose for which you can design something for.

1) This was only an idea in which I could gauge other people's opinions on weather it would be useful or not.

2) Doc has said that the Lorath would like a ship like this as he said that it would be the type of thing he would use.

It's unfortunatnly very sad that the romantic dogfights have completely died. Even today, modern fighters cannont hope to engage each other at the combat speeds they are capable of achieving. As things get faster this becomes even harder although it is slightly mitigated by the much improved manuverablity.

Like much modern warfare, I would say such a fighter craft would be designed to eleminate larger targets - or ones they can hope to hit. I suggest carrying a serious payload coupled with enough speed/shielding to get yourself where ever your going in one piece.

But I degress, dogfights are still dead :? [/u]

It seems that these fighters would be useless to the star army, but Doc wants them for the Lorath as their technology is still developing so I shall make it for them.
