RP [Orochi Squadron] Mission 1: Tentacled Tidings

Jun System, Great Southern Nebula
2200 Hours, planet time

T'was the night before Yuletide, and all through the system, not a starship was stirring... hmm, perhaps not. A ripple in spacetime from afar soon became a wave as suddenly a large group of what appeared to be mining freighters appeared into normal space at the edge of the system, their cloaks of aether dissipating into tiny motes of energy that faded into the placid red and purple stellar backdrop. Their appearance was not particularly noteworthy, being very similar to the numerous civilian cargo haulers that visited the sleepy mining system every day. However, their timing was unusual, being so close to the holiday festivities every other crewed vessel had long since departed with their load of treasure or landed on Jun II to join the colony's modest celebrations...

As the fleet moved swiftly towards the terrestrial planet, they hailed the Frontier Starport to request landing clearance. The response was understandably slow, as only a lone blue-haired Minkan male was manning the traffic control tower at the time and having trouble keeping himself awake. But even his groggy state he could notice something was wrong with the transmission and followed protocols when he saw some what looked like dodgy sensor returns as well. "Jun II tower to cargo fleet. I'm.. uh... having trouble identifying your IFF coding for landing clearance. Please re-transmit and wait for my signal."

As he waited for the response, he noticed that the grouping on his radar had not halted and was still in motion, without waiting for the go-ahead or even returning the ping. All of them seemed to be shimmering too, as their volumetric projection systems began to experience the turbulence and the truth beneath became revealed to the sensor sweeps, mottled brown hulls appearing where once was silver.

Suddenly the display lit up with red as the <unknown> dots were replaced with something no controller ever wanted (or expected) to see: NMX. 11 NMX "Pillager" Class Light Cruisers were now positively identified as rapidly descending from orbit into the upper the atmosphere, along with a Tivurthinth-class Patrol Ship remaining in orbit as overwatch. It was not long before the apparent flagship of the sudden invasion trained its anti-starship turrets on the constellation of Emrys Satellites whizzing by... and promptly opened fire, creating a ring of explosions that encircled the planet as all civilian communications were suddenly blacked out.

Visibly shaking with fear, the operator sounded the warning sirens on the tiny starport, "B-Battlestations! W-We're under attack by NMX raiders! Tower defenses activated - all units scramble, scramble!" Armed towers turrets and missile launchers swiveled into position and took aim on the incoming ships. The Shi-rudo towers also flared to life, projecting a shield to protect the base as grounds crews sprang into action pulling all sensitive cargo and equipment beneath the fortified ground where it could be protected from the raiders. A lone Plumeria gunship, the YSS Kashiwa, was the only SAoY asset that was docked there that day, and was barely manned with most of its Nekovalkyrja crew enjoying shore leave on planet with friends and family. It would take time to get into the air to combat the invaders, who had already begun the attack.

The effort was valiant by the defense garrison, but it was simply outgunned against so many Pillagers attacking as a cohesive grouping with the element of surprise on their side. Their Furious Main Cannons pulsed in a deadly rapid fire pattern that pummeled the shield generators on the ground faster than they could compensate. The base's counter attack did little against the enemy, anti-armor rounds barely scratching the blunt noses of the NMX cruisers, while their missile barrages were shot down by the enemy's anti-smallcraft turret fire before they could impact.

The final blow to the stunned defenders came in a barrage of aether torpedoes fired from the rapidly descending armada, plowing right into the defensive towers as their shield generators overloaded and failed. They erupted into four bright pillars of fire, pieces scattering all over the landing tarmac. The Plumeria began a last-ditch attempt to lift off its pad but it was slammed back down and its landing gear and belly crushed beneath it by another two of the torpedoes that crippled the gunship. "Shimatta..." The traffic controller cursed his luck with his final breath, forced to watch in horror as one of the Pillagers came down right on top of the central tower, crushing him and everything in it to the ground as it and its sister ships deployed their landing gears and came down with a thud amidst the ruined starport that was still smoldering around them.

The ships wasted no time dropping their ramps to the floor, as scores of Battle Buggies and Cargo Trucks piloted by lightly armored NH-29 Nekovalkyrja zipped out followed by the more ominous treaded Prisoner Handling Vehicles crewed by the tentacled Mishhuvurthyar. A handful of Fox T4 Shuttles also took to the skies along with a handful of shock trooper Crab-Types, as the raiders spread out and exchanged fire briefly with the remaining handful of broken and scattered members of the infantry garrison, bowling them over on their way towards the nearby settlement that was home to most of the colony's 50,000 inhabitants. It was obvious by the NMX's daring, lightning raid tactics that they were here to steal as much resources and "human capital" that they could, before the Star Army could send in reinforcements that were only a short distance away.

And pillage they did, as the now unimpeded Mishhu invaders thundered down the roads to the central square of the mining town, a beautiful tree placed there that was lit up in all its beautiful year end celebration glory. Anyone else would have stopped to marvel at the festive sight with ooh and ahh's... but instead the colonists who looked on screamed as the Crabs extended their tentacles in unison, wrapping around the majestic pine and bringing it down to the cold ground in a mass of green needles and sparking lights that sent revelers scampering like snow.

The music of the holidays soon faltered, video screens showing nothing but static as a predatory, psionic voice echoed in the Yamataian victim's heads: "Foolish prey. That will be the last tree that you ever see! Now begins the year of your eternal torment...!"

Valentine System
, Samurai Sector
Aboard the YSS Orochi

Up on the command level of the bridge in a red suede covered chair sat one Taisa Hachimitsu Mikoto, commander of the Orochi Squadron. The long, silver-haired Nekovalkyrja leaned heavily on one side of the armrest as her amber eyes watched the displays in front of her, monitoring the ongoing progress of the large training exercise that she was overseeing that day involving a fresh batch of recruits from Fort Hankou, among other places. Her expression was that of someone who was indeed quite bored, as the nearly 800 Mindy's underwent very textbook launch and live fire procedures from the 8 Irim-class Heavy Gunships that made up a quarter of the Valentine system's assigned garrison. They were aging vessels from the Second Mishhuvurthyar War that raged in this place long ago that were nearing the end of their service life, as the once-proud PA carriers were in peacetime relegated largely to training duties.

It's leader was also no exception, herself feeling more and more like a relic from another time and place. Created to command fleet operations, she cut her teeth in many a bloody skirmish in the waning years of the war with Eight Fleet. Having successfully driven off the invading Mishhu, an eerily quiet peace had settled into the southern reaches of space for several years now that left warriors like her feeling lost and out of place. One could only see the same planets of the system and train new clone infantry Neko's so many times before going slightly mad... and perhaps in a way she was, secretly desiring in her heart of hearts for a Year-End times gift of not sweetness... but a drop of blood and NMX vitriol. Just one more battle in the void of space for the glory of the Empire, to feel that true adrenaline rush of the kill before the fog of retirement would finally take her. That was her one true wish...

Unfortunately, fate has a way of giving us more than we bargain for.

As she gave the order to return and recover to the various armor wings with a half-hearted wave of her Zesuaium tessen, the Taisa gave a yawning stretch and looked to her side at the Ketsurui Samurai that was standing there silently studying and tabulating a report of the operation. Hashimoto Yuumi, the ertswhile First Officer of the YSS Orochi and yojimbo bodyguard to the Taisa, was what many considered the cool-headed counterpoint to the CO. Her black hair was up in a top knot ponytail that draped behind her, as the pair of daisho katanas she wore in her red hakama showed off her status as a master of the blade to all who would threaten Mikoto's person.

Feeling the eyes on her from the commander, Yuumi tilted her head slightly and delivered the preliminary results with mild disappointment. "It seems like we have some work to do yet, Hachimitsu-sama. Preliminary results show overall launch efficiency is only at about 72%: Both Iyo and Tsushima wings seem to be having slow command chain response times, as well as Ogi and Sado reporting some PA equipment issues affecting readiness. Awaji also damaged two of its Hyabusa fighters when the launch bay elevator malfunctioned..."

The Taisa sighed and opened the metallic fan a moment to cast a breeze over her chiseled features. "By, Chiharu, who is training our sisters now? If they cranked out soldiers like this in my day, we all would have been licking Mishhu tentacles right about now..."

Yuuki bowed her head, offering some wisdom. "Patience... we all made our mistakes fresh out of the tube. A few more drills and..."

The Taisa played with the thought she had earlier, finally giving a voice to her frustrations. "Simulated enemies and ghosts to chase only go so far, Hashimoto-juni. No... what this group of 99'ers needs is..."

Just then, a loud ping began going off at the communications station to the right of the elevated captain's chair. The curly purple-haired Neko sprite that sat there, a single bar of a Shoi on her sleeve, almost jumped out of her seat in excitement at something interesting to report happening. "Taisa, it's... it's an incoming high-priority transmission from Eighth Fleet command. It's from the Taisho herself!"

Mikoto blinked and leaned forward now with renewed interest, wondering just what could have happened to warrant the Taisho sending a command to her directly, unless... Could it be...? "Well don't just stand there gawking, Fuji-shoi. On screen, please!"

The Orochi's main view switched from the images of the Valentine system around them to the blonde-haired visage of the Lioness, Taisho Shizuka Endo. She was seated at her desk with the view from the windows of Fort Shizuka in the background, a look of concern across her face. "Taisa Hachimitsu, moments ago we received an emergency distress beacon from the Frontier Starport in Jun system, before a communications blackout descended on the entire planet. A subspace transmission was also detected from the YSS Kashiwa stationed there, before it too fell silent." Her image fell to the corner of the screen, while a series of images from various angles played out showing what appeared to be Pillager Cruisers assaulting the starport with their artillery and landing troops and equipment, before everything went black. "We never thought the NMX would be brazen enough to directly assault a YSE colony, but if true this signals a dangerous escalation in their tactics to acquire the resources and slave labor to rebuild their wrecked war machine. I know you are in the middle of training exercises, with a new and untested crew... but you are the nearest combat-ready assets the Eight Fleet has to respond to this crisis." The Taisho then flashed a look of anger in her golden eyes, as the fact she knew they were here to take captives touched a nerve. "Orochi squadron... your orders are to interdict and disable the NMX raiding fleet by any means necessary before they can escape the nebula. Leave no man, woman or child behind... is that clear?"

The silver-haired Taisa jumped out of her command seat at the realization of what was going on, delivering the most crisp salute that her bridge officers had seen in perhaps years. "It will be done, Taisho... we will not fail!"

Shizuka nodded once. "Elements of the 8th Medical and Rescue Group, and the Starship Repair Group will be en route to Jun to assist you in responding to the crisis, once we know the situation with the enemy fleet is in hand. Ganbatte." The image then cut out back to space.

Yuuki rested a hand on her katana, and rubbed her chin. "It looks like the peace may be coming to an end. I hope our young ones are ready."

Hachimitsu Mikoto meanwhile seemed to be almost trembling with joy in her warrior soul. It was if the heavens had heard her fervent prayers... An actual, real live NMX attack on a system, and her squadron picked for the mission to stop them. "They will have to be... besides, for Nekovalkyrja like us, the battlefield is the best classroom."

Puffed up with pride and a lust for action, the captain opened a secure line to the entire battlegroup:

"This is the Taisa to all Orochi Squadron defense units: Command has just informed us of a large-scale NMX attack underway on the Jun mining system. As members of the 8th's system defense group, it is our sworn duty to respond to this crisis. All vessels, assume Orchid formation with the Orochi and prepare to make an immediate fold. All infantry squad members returning from exercises, as well as starfighter pilots, are to remain in the launch bay area for an updated mission briefing from me while we are in transit."

The eager captain got a glint in her amber eyes, as she followed this announcement with something she had been wanting to say for a long time, the satisfying echo throughout the ship a sort of music to her furred ears: "This is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill."

Amid the cluster of her sisters, one Neko stood somewhat apart. Instead of chattering excitedly with the others over the unexpected turn of events, wondering if it was some sort of nefarious plot or one of the more hardcore drills to come down the line, a golden haired Neko stood a little ways apart from the rest. With her Mindy's helmet under her right arm held against her side, her left hand was free to maneuver the banana, or 'banyana' as she had ecstatically called it moments earlier upon recovering it from the ship's cooking staff. All in all she seemed more interested in the fruit in her hand than the chatter going around her, though the swivelling and twitching of her golden furred ears betrayed her interest.

After all Santo-Hei Seo Mayu was one of the fresh 99 Day infantry Nekovalkyrja that had been taking part in these exercises, a brief interlude she had hoped before transferring to Vicky. After all she had aspirations to aid the YSE via SAINT, perhaps not always a popular aspiration among her peers, but she had spent enough time digging up information of her fellow Nekovalkyrja at Fort Hankou that it only felt natural. She might even one day get to meet some of those she had read about. However, Mayu's mind was nowhere near SAINT, nor was it focused on whether they would be cutting apart 'Squids' in a few minutes. No, she was focused on little beyond her 'banyana.'

Eizo listened to all of the talk from the corner of the Bay, he had removed his helmet and it was on the floor beside as his gazed scanned the groups of people chatting "Why waste brain power trying to work out what is going on here, they are going to tell use when we are needed to know" he sighed and chuckled about the look on some people's faces as it ranged from worry to eagerness, there was also someone who was just focused on a banana and it made him chuckle even more.

This was his first placement back in the army after his time off, the scar on his face still reminding him not to be an idiot as he bent down and grabbed his helmet, he looked around again at everyone then decided to watch the Neko with a banana as she seemed to the most interesting thing happening in the room "Well it's watch the Neko play around with a banana or watch people chat about that is happening."

YSS Orochi, Science Lab

For what seemed like the millionth time since he'd been transferred from the YSS Soyokaze a few weeks prior, Pavel Lazarev - sitting in his "office" (really, just an oversized chair and an undersized desk squeezed into the room's corner) and very, very bored, having since finished re-arranging the cramped confines of the ship's Science Lab over a hour prior - once again wondered with his fast-paced mind just what he was doing onboard the squadron flagship. Such a rapid transfer would have had an extremely high probability of being considered to be indicative of one's lack of performance back in the Planetary Guard, especially when one includes the two additional factors of being a member of the Soyokaze's crew for a single military training excursion and the disparity between the sizes of that vessel and the one in which I now reside - something that one could easily ascertain merely by comparing the complexity of the two ship's medical facilities. Yet - the Kodian paused and looked down at his uniform - a conclusion of this nature is rendered invalid completely by the peculiar fact that I have been promoted not once, but twice - ergo, those that can be found in positions of authority must have somehow deemed my actions on the planet of Mevar worth-

The Medic's thought processes came to a halt as the voice of the commander (Taisa, Mikoto Hachimitsu, Type-33 Nekovalkyrja female) came over the room's intercom; as the aforementioned Taisa spoke, Pavel's thoughtful expression became that of a frown. This shall most likely to prove to be problematic.

Upon the message's conclusion, the Kodian got up with a grunt of exertion (and an accompanying groan of relief from the beleagured chair) and set about preparing for the casualties that were sure to soon be arriving, only to sigh - for the Medic, in the process of making said preparations, was most likely going to have to unpack the majority of the medical supplies he'd spent three-and-a-half shifts storing in the very limited space available to him in the Lab. Oh, blestyashchiy...

Civilian SYNC Channel, "lovelylancer.wordbox.va"

Endless scrolling veils of text orbited a massive chocolate planet, amidst a serene pink landscape filled with fleecy blue nebula and simplistic cartoon stars. Many of the boxes had tiny moons above them, often seating the one posting, as well as the odd stray observer or two.

"Broke another sword in training trying to do the homing razor as suggested." A white chibi-style cat with a impossibly huge head, eyes mismatched blue and green. There was a small crescent moon on it's forehead. "Did not get pics. Teacher was very very mad. Might delay my review of Love Warrior Daiyaishi. Please don't unsub."

"Wait, what? You are bailing because of that?" A teddy bear floated over. "Didn't you say you were from the valentine system as well? Get your ass to real space already! Something is going down!"

YSS Orochi, Armor Bay

A sudden eruption of sound occurred behind Seo Mayu, as a pale fuscia-haired nekovalkyrja came in rather later than many of the others, and dove into their Mindy 2 so fast that it sounded painful. Out of breath, but apparently only just now realizing that the XO was not around yet, the considerably short and fluffy creature shrugged off the commotion by quickly acting serene and unperturbed again. Walking into the ranks, they then just approached the head-and-shoulders taller Koguchi Eizo, and threw him a toothy smile along with a short curt nod.

"Excuse me, darling!" There was a certain sickly-sweet softness to her diminutive voice, but her tired angular eyes, and the flash of half a dozen too many canines... The body looked new enough, but something was just really off in terms of her demeanor, compared to the other factory-fresh nekovalkyrja. "What did I miss? I heard on the SYNC that the roaches turned up, and infested a whole star system, or something? This could be our big chance to shine, you know!"

It wasn't long it seemed before Mayu had acquired something of an audience, and not being one to disappoint, her idle enjoyment of her 'banyana' turned into something much more sensual. She began doing things that one does not do with a banana no matter what you call it, such as licking it, kissing it, and pumping large sections of it deep into her mouth. Really it was kind of lewd. Her indulgent silliness was interrupted by the inquiry of a vaguely familiar voice, someone she'd heard talking in the crowd but had never formally met on her brief training tour with the Orochi squadron. Still the questions weren't directed toward Mayu, but instead one of her earliest watchers so she didn't necessarily need to stop, however the mention that the Neko had missed the initial briefing implied that this Neko hadn't been out among the trainees, which meant she was older. Curious.

Biting off a large chunk of the banyana, Mayu turned to observe the interaction while chewing, a slow thoughtful action. Man meets magical Nekovalkyrja, how does he react? She supposed she'd see soon enough.

YSS Orochi, Launch Catapults

"Good work today, everyone! Let's all get cleaned up and hit the lounges, first round's my Yuletide present to you all!"

Clapping her hands to draw the attention of the pilots, Nito Heisho Raku Kishi couldn't help but smile as a ragged cheer went up from the chaotic mob she called her very own Oscar Fighter Squadron (also known as O-Squadron). Good soldiers all, she thought to herself as she went through the customary welcome-back ritual common among all pilots across the universe, slapping backs and comparing (bragging) tales of derring-do with the rest of the squadron as they shambled towards the hangar exits in a moving blob of humanity (relative).

A small part of her was still irked by their undisciplined behavior, but she decided to cut them some slack just for today. They did just come back from a practice sortie just moments ago, even performing so well on that flight that she simply didn't have the heart to put them down. Besides, Kishi mused with a rather unkind snicker, they'd all shown up Iyo Flight at every single turn! She was definitely bringing a camera to the Officer's Debriefing later, the Neko thought to herself with a relish, the look on Ogawa's face would be priceless.

Carefully extricating herself from the mob of fighter-jockeys, Kishi politely excused herself and settled against a convenient railing to wait for the return of the rest of her pilots. The familiar scream of a Hayabusa V6D's engines rang out in the cavernous facilities at regular intervals as the starfighters landed, setting the Nito Heisho's long azure hair aflutter every so often. As she reached up to brush a stray lock out of the way, the hangar's intercom abruptly blared.

"This is the Taisa to all Orochi Squadron defense units:" the voice of Taisa Hachimitsu Mikoto rang out, "Command has just informed us of a large-scale NMX attack underway on the Jun mining system.

"This is not a drill. I repeat, this is not a drill."

"Wait, what?!" Kishi spluttered as she damn near lost her footing, reeling from shock as she clung to the railing for dear life. "...really now, Mishhu out here in the middle of nowhere? On Yuletide Eve, even!" Shaking herself out of it, Kishi held a finger up to her temple (out of habit) and began contacting her pilots via telepathy as she stalked down the gantries towards the confused ground crews, still lost in the suddenness of the announcement.

<Sorry guys and girls, party's been postponed.> the Nito Heisho let out a mental sigh. <Get some joe and meet me back at the catapults, I'll be kicking the crews into getting our jets turned around asap. Be a dear and grab a cuppa for me as well, will one of you?>

Eizo started to laugh at the Neko with the banana as he just saw the whole thing as funny nothing else, his mind never went that way so to him it was a girl playing with food. He turned to another Neko that had started a convocation with him 'God why do these things love to chat' his face showed no emotion while he talked "All I have heard is that we are going to this place, I don't know what's happening but I don't need to talk with it to a knife ear."

He sighed and closed his eyes and put the helmet onto his head "To me your kind isn't worth that much, you may have all the training but normal people have more than just training" he walked past the Neko who had started to the convo towards the one eating a banana "Hope you are enjoying that" he continued to move towards another wall away for anyone and started to meditate.

It became quickly apparent that Scar-chan was one of those who emphasized the 'equipment' portion of the NH's description. It also seemed that the Magical Lunar Neko would be left high and dry in her efforts to socialize with the Minkan, and that she'd need someone else to fill her in on the current state of things. To Mayu, it was curious that she'd been accessing a SYNC node while the others had been performing exercises. Between the two of them Mayu couldn't tell who was more interesting, after all there had to be a reason Scar-chan was so grumpy when surrounded by beautiful constructs.

Having run out of the core fruit of her banyana, Mayu had quickly proceeded to devour the skin. In the process of solving the issue of having the banyana peel left over, Mayu was chewing thoughtfully when Scar-chan spoke to her. Swallowing happily, Mayu was quick to chirp in response to the Minkan, "Hai Koguchi-Hei. My banyana was optimally pleasing, one out of one Neko approve, and provided much ameowsement. Surely you nyoticed? Or perhaps you were busy deflecting Eguchi-Hei's attempts at getting you to fill out her nyanties with your itch-scratching post?" She flashed a toothy grin and wiggled her ears, her eyes glittering with mirth for a moment before her features settled into a more modest state of thoughtful amusement.

"Purrhaps I should deflect your admirer? That way you can have quiet wall time nya?" She looked back toward the excitable figure of Eguchi-Hei, taking her time studying the unique Nekovalkyrja, after all not only might she have to keep the anomaly busy, but she'd likely be fighting along side her soon enough. As much as the training staff were fond of giving cutesy names to the Mishhuvurthyar, the 'squiddies' were a lethal threat, and no one wanted to wake up in a hemosynth vat a second time, let alone so soon after the first awakening.

Eizo looked up and smiled happily at the Neko who just walked over to him and laughed at what he thought were puns she was making while she talked and soon realised they may not be and he was offending her "I am sorry about all of that, I was still in hard ass mode, it comes out while training or on mission." He sighs "So what do I need to apologise for to you miss" he grins at her and rubbed the back of his head "Did I do something bad in training towards you?"

Eisei didn't actually respond to Eizo's insults at all, and simply remained standing reactionless for a moment as the much larger man strolled away. Pearly whites remained on display the entire time, as unblinking glazed over eyes were trapped in some kind of mental blue screen of death for one pace too many.

"...Oh, I see..." She was talking to herself, voice a tempered whisper, hands still frozen hanging forwards in greeting. "He's not a calm and collected anti-hero at all, he's... h-he's a bonne fide evil-dooer, zee!...."

Slowly, her hands juddered back to life, and ran themselves through her sugary pink tufts for comfort. Heavy breathing. Still smiling, still no blinking. She struggled to hold back a sputtering giggle just under her breath. "It's so good! It's so good, zee." It wasn't despair. She was legitimately exited about something. "He can't even tell. They can't t-tell no n-nothing!"

Briskly, her glaringly vibrant eyes made a dart towards both Mayu and Koguchi in turn, then narrowed as her head tilted back into an expression slightly more sultry. It could have been a trick of the light or even a holographic effect, but it looked like the minuscule candy-colored thing actually glimmered for a moment...

Inhumanly sensitive nekovalkyrja ears arced forward. She wanted to listen to them talk more.

YSS Orochi, Armor Bay

The scene around the infantry members chatting was similar all throughout the launch area, as the Nekovalkyrja all stood around in various states of confusion wondering what the announcement meant, some half-out of their Mindy armors already and forced to re-equip them hastily. Was it really a legitimate attack they needed to respond to or perhaps another exercise in an of itself? The situation with the Hyabusa starfighter squadron was similar, as the pilots sighed and began checking their crafts over for another launch back into the black. One of the girls of the Flight, a yellow-haired Neko named Miyoshi, was nice enough to heed Kishi's request and appear with a tray of fresh coffee for everyone along with some cookies. Now if only she was as good at flying as playing waitress...

From behind Mayu and Eisei came the sound of Nito Heisho Kurosora Kim stomping up in her Mindy, her fiery red hair in a ponytail and fuzzy matching fur on her ears flicking in minor annoyance. She was a veteran infantry woman who had served in several places including on the Eucharis with Hanako herself, and as a reward had been summarily promoted and placed here on the Orochi to train the next generation. It was a little bit of a punishment for her to have to babysit the newbie-filled 2nd Squad like this, but the tough EOD specialist kept a brave face on for the sake of her charges, knowing much better than them the seriousness of what was transpiring.

"OK, kittens, let's not get too relaxed... This is serious business here if the Taisa is calling for a briefing in the bay and the ship is emergency folding. Form up!"

All through the launch area the other NCO's were doing the same with their squads, the various units all combined together to form the 100-strong Orochi Wing which was considered the best the squadron had to offer. The assembled infantry could feel the Irim shuddering once as the tell-tale purple light outside the viewing ports and launch catapult reminded them that the flagship was indeed hastily leaving the exercise area in Valentine, and many whispered that they had never seen the old gunship move with such a sense of urgency before.

♫ SeeD - Final Fantasy VIII Music Extended

Whether to stoke or assuage those fears, the silver-haired form of the imposing Taisa soon appeared from the lift exit. Flanked by her bodyguard Yuuki, the two made quite the pair as they strode into the armor bay proper, preceeded of course by the customary calls of "Taisa on deck!" to make sure everyone was aware and had time to give their respects.

Mikoto found a place to stand to address the gathering of her forces, with her back to the venerable subspace-encased catapult system that they soon would be using to be shot into space at many times the speed of light. She opened her shiny Zesuaium tessen fan part way to draw attention, before speaking with an aura of seriousness and command, as her samurai retainer merely quietly folded her arms into the sleeves of her kimono and prepared a translucent volumetric display which shimmered into being in the air behind her so that all could see.

"All right, everyone. I'm not here to bore you with a long-winded speech. In the business of war it is best to get right to the point."

She clicked her tongue a bit and then gestured to the screen behind her, which energized to show the fleet of 8 Irim's speeding eastward towards the Great Southern Nebula. A tap and the display focused in on the Jun system, where 12 red dots encircled the system's main planet, the second from its star. The flags of NMX were clearly visible, staring at the mining world like a swarm of hungry jackals.

"According to our intelligence, at approximately 2200 hours, a fleet primarily composed of NMX Pillager-class cruisers appeared suddenly in system and severed all communication links in and out of the planet. The timing was naturally perfect for such a strike as the Yuletide festivities were in full swing, and our garrison was overwhelmed in minutes." The commander paused, with a heavy sigh. "We have no way of knowing what happened after we lost contact with the Kashiwa and the starport, but it's safe to say that these raiders aren't after some Yuletide presents under the tree, and mean to abduct everyone and steal everything they can get their dirty tentacles on."

The display switched to a close-up theatre of war map, that showed the NMX fleet moving to the edge of the system with a red arrow, while the Orochi Sqaudron with a blue arrow pursued them. Numerous dots showed the launch of PA and Hyabusa starfighters, rocketing towards the enemy formation of Battlepods to penetrate it and approach the ships. It was obvious to the more tactically minded what the operation was to focus on.

"It's safe to say that when we arrive in system the enemy fleet will be trying to hastily escape the Hull Sphere of Jun system and fold out. Thanks to the surrounding nebula's interference, tracking their course will prove difficult after the fact... so it's imperative that we stop them here and now. Our Irim gunships are about equal in speed to the Pillagers, so catching them in that way is not feasible... and we certainly can't risk firing our capital ship weaponry full bore and destroying the ships outright with all the captured civilians aboard. So, as soon as we drop out of hyperspace, Orochi and her sister Wings will spearhead the attack -- you must all be ready to immediately launch via catapult into space. Fighter squadrons will fly escort to help penetrate the Battlepod's defensive screen, and deliver shield-piercing torpedoes to open the way to the enemy ships themselves."

The outlines on the volumetric display showed each PA wing assigned to a specific Pillager, breaching the hulls and freeing the citizens trapped inside, as the Taisa pointed a circle around the specific target for the Orochi Wing with a circular motion of her fan, acting like a pointer.

"Yes, this, ladies and gentleman, is a textbook boarding operation... you've trained for it, and now it's time to show me the results of that hard work. I know some of you may feel frightened at the prospect of engaging real, live Mishhuvurthyar in close combat, but to those sisters I say: We also have real lives hanging in the balance of our actions in the coming moments. We may all have synthetic hearts, but within us all beats the souls of space warriors who were born to fight, to protect, to survive... remember these truths! Let us give our old vile enemies a Yuletide gift they shall not soon forget!"

This last line was delivered with an eager smile, as the previously mentioned spirit of the Nekovalkyrja Taisa burned brightly in her amber eyes, hoping to inspire her troops to similar visions of greatness in combat.

About to encourage Scar-chan and the Magical Lunar Neko to kiss and make up, Mayu was startled by the appearance of the Heisho in the crowd. Pivoting on her left heel, Mayu bowed and greeted the Heisho an action more rote than conscious, acknowledging the higher ranked Nekovalkyrja before setting into motion and falling into orderly place with the rest of her sisters. In the brief period of time before the Taisa arrived Mayu found herself looking at the face of her Mindy's helmet studying its identity, in a way her own, before pushing her head into the safety of the helmet and largely erasing her golden haired presence among the others.

A cheerful greeting was exchanged with the AIES, happy to see one another in their synergistic relationship. One that Mayu had been happy to cultivate with the unfortunately limited AI. The light pleasantries were cut short by the silver-haired Taisa and her omnipresent tessen. Bowing as best as she could in the ranks while some others in front of her chose to salute around her, Mayu was quick to focus on the details of their mission. Apparently they weren't just fighting the Mishhu, they were rescuing civilians. This meant that they had to be careful, something that she wasn't sure they had been trained for. Mayu was certain that she and her sisters could cut apart any Misshuvurthyar vessel in short order, however the care that it would take not to cause any unnecessary casualties among friendly civilians would be difficult to say the least.

Licking her teeth as she thought Mayu took a deep steadying breath as she had seen some of the Minkan trainees do when nervous, it didn't really do much so far as she could tell but there had to be a reason for it right? Still focused on the Taisa when the briefing came to a close, Mayu cheered with the rest of her sisters in response to the high point of the Taisa's closing statement, though she couldn't help but feel that she'd soon be learning something that no simulation or drill had taught. She didn't know if she was excited or scared. It was sort of uncomfortable.

Eizo looked over the other Nekos, he felt a little bad that he may of said the wrong thing to one of them but after hearing the debrief he put his helmet back on and grinned at the Neko in front of him "Well little lady, I'll see you later if we meet up after this, we can have can proper talk and I think it will be Purr-fect" he winked at her then went towards the weapons and saw what he needed to take he grumbled "I am better with short range weapons."

Eizo sighed but picked up what he was required to as he knew if he got close to the enemy he may not be the same at the end with how they work, he chuckled to himself as he then made his way to where he needed to go, he felt really eager and pumped up thanks to the speech of their leader.

The gawky petite neko's head snapped towards the Heisho as Mayu rendered her courtesy, and Eisei awkwardly followed suit soon afterwards, as if genuinely having trouble with the concept. Her smile made a little pervasive v-shape as she mentally entered something haphazardly resembling a professional mindset, but no amount of decorum could quash it completely. Fortunately, the Mindy designers saw fit to include a helmet, and nobody could see her ridiculous aghast expression when Taisa Hachimitsu made her rousing speech towards the rank and file. The commander and her samurai bodyguard were just... really pretty. Eisei enjoyed the theatrical quality of it all, especially all of the shiny fans and katanas jangling around.

Reality seeped in very slowly indeed. She didn't know what she thought of her first mission being against the NMX. Yamatai had treated her extremely well and all, but... It was truly irksome, feeling like a captured piece of equipment...

Head slightly down, arms pinned to her sides, she just gulped down heavily and did her best not to think about it. She was Eguchi Eisei now. The other lady was dead. She would be a shiny and pretty nekovalkyrja soldier lady, and she would teach evil a lesson in all it's horrid forms.

Kurosora gave a salute to the Taisa, and tried to take in the finer details of the situation. This was something pretty heavy for a first mission, even if a lot of it was textbook in execution. There was the very real chance a lot of them might not make it back if they just charged in unprepared against enemies that were going to be firing back with deadly intent.

Turning around at the head of her small squad, she ran her vermillion eyes across Koguchi, Eguchi, Seo, and the others behind them at attention and returned their salutes. Now where was that feisty young Yamato, though?

"Alright... let's get ourselves re-equipped for boarding operations," began the Heisho, noticing the male Minkan already heading to the weapons racks. She decided to use him as a good example. "Nice to see you moving with a sense of urgency, Eguchi-hei! But listen to me first... after you grab an Aether Beam Saber Rifle, the next thing I want is for everyone to have a Teleportation Unit on their back. Trust me, no matter how good you think you are you are going to have to hit the panic button sometime... but it's also a tool to get your comrades out of incoming fire just as much as yourself with the piggyback technique."

The leader opened up the outer leg portions of her Mindy to reveal some small warheads stored inside in a neat row. "Make sure your lower Counter Measure Augmentation Pods are restocked before launch. We're no good to those prisoners if we can't make it through the Battlepod's missile swarms in one piece. Throw whatever accessories you like on the shoulder hardpoints to compliment your fighting style -- Gauss cannons or missile pods."

Kim then put her helmet back on and secured it, making sure the squad's communications links through the AIES was working correctly. The rough and tumble soldier didn't seem to mind being launched once more into the void, having a native love of zero-G environments. "You've got exactly one minute before we drop out of fold to get ready. Any questions?"

With her load-out already in mind as soon as it became clear where she had open slots, Mayu hung back while the others surged forward eagerly to collect their equipment. After all there was more than enough for everyone, no point in rushing. Instead as she fell in toward the back of the line she inquired politely, "Nitô Heisho? What is our primary objective? Are we to focus on disabling the enemy vessels to prevent escape? Or are the civilians our first priority? What about information assets? How important is knowing why our enemy is here at all?"

Given that Mayu was at the back of the line and it was moving fairly slowly she didn't have any trouble babbling her questions to the Heisho, on the other hand she hadn't considered that the Heisho's attention might be split with other tasks. Such as making sure everyone got their kit in order. The questions of a Hei were after all the least of the Heisho's duties.

Notably it also wasn't Mayu's right to know the answer to these questions, merely to follow orders when the time came. For now, the only right Mayu had was to the ABSR, TP unit, CMAPs, and the two Capacitor Units that called her name. She was rather looking forward to the fight she supposed, not a bad thing given her circumstances, she just hoped that the civilians were in a state that allowed for a cheerful reunion with friendly forces.

Eisei was still struggling to contain the gribbly feeling in her organs as the Heshio laid out the situation for them. Her limbs dragged themselves into the equipment line on autopilot, but her mind was going haywire all the while. Not just with fear of battle, but with waves neurosis flooding back to the surface all at once. Was she actually good enough to be here, or just a counterfeit? Would she be anything more than a faceless digit on a casualty list if she didn't make it back? Were they monitoring her emotional state, right now, looking for signs of treachery?

Breathing heavily, hands shaking, she took a moment just to gyrate her helmet left and right, trying to settle the sour feeling in her stomach. Sabre rifle, teleporter unit, countermeasures, missile pods equipped.

"W-what do we do if they don't have space suits, m-ma'am?... The civilians?..." It was a grainy, weak voice. But the act of speaking alone felt preferable to descending into a panic attack. Faceplate hid her expression, but the slouch in the small neko's stand to attention made her anxiety obvious. "Should we focus on simply disabling the enemy vessels? Taking them over?"

This is happening. This is actually happening.

After what felt like a lifetime of drills, exercises and routines, Santô Hei Sigrid Fukuzawa of the YSS Orochi will finally have the chance to live up to her nation, her people and her name. Soon she will jump into battle, putting her life in peril to rescue the many kidnapped civilians of Jun before it's too late. It was a scenario that came straight from her sweetest dreams as a young trainee, and she could hardly believe that it became a reality until Heisho Kurosora began going over equipment detail with the rest of her squad.

The words of the Taisa, eloquent and powerful, continued to resonate in Sigrid's head like ringing after an explosion. She smiled. After trying her best to suppress her emotions and stay serious while the Heisho spoke, she could not help but let out some excitement through a small grin.Unfortunately, this caused her to lose a precious half-second for her question, as her squad mate Mayu promptly raised her own concerns before she could even let out a word. "Damn" she muttered quietly under her breath, cursing her brief moment of inattention. Her queries will have to wait for now.

With no time to spare, heading for the weapons rack in preparation for launch, Sigrid equipped herself with a Sabre Rifle and TP unit, as well as double-checked that her CMAPs were stocked and armed as ordered. For her shoulder hardpoints, the Hei knew that the 50mm Gauss Cannon, armed with Tungsten Armor Piercing rounds, would best suit her fighting style. To complement this choice, she found no better than a Shoulder Capacitor to provide her Mindy with any extra power. With weapons and countermeasures ready, she locked on her helmet, walked back to her squad, and stood proud and ready for Heisho Kurosora's new orders.
