SANDRA Planetary Fort Planned for Asura

The Imperial government of the Yamatai Star Empire and Star Army of Yamatai jointly announced today its intention to create a "Special Control Zone" on Asura III, which will contain a Star Army of Yamatai planetary base, tentatively named Fort Asura, which will serve as the hub of Asura's planetary defenses.

Asura was colonized in YE 30 during the initial expansion of the United Outer Colonies. Its location outside the Yugumo Cluster left it largely untouched by the rapacious and genocidal influx of Mishhuvurthyar Military forces during the Second Mishhuvurthyar War. Despite this, the loss of the central UOC government caused the local government of Asura to collapse and the planet broke into factions. These small nations are often run directly by corporate interests. The Lorath Defense Force provided protection against Mishhuvurthyar invasions, at least for a time.

In YE 33, the remaining assets of the UOC were claimed by the Yamatai Star Empire and all its Jiyuuians became Yamataians again. The survivors were rescued and cared for by Yamatai, Nepleslia, Lor, and the Abwehran Star Empire. However, Asura, which was mostly untouched by the war, was also not touched by the evacuation. It became--and remains--the second most populous star system in the Yamatai Star Empire.

In light of popular attitudes on Asura and having only the loosest control of surface, the Yamatai Star Empire and its Tenth Fleet, which oversaw the military defense of the region, has been content to avoid the surface until recently, so this move comes as a change of strategy.

The commander of the Star Army of Yamatai, Taisho Ketsurui Yui, explained Monday in a press conference that she thought it was, "ridiculous for any YSE planet to be off-limits to the Star Army" and that she had gone to the Empress to seek permission to "move into a better position to defend Asura against external and internal threats." The plan to establish a base was approved and will be started immediately.

Meanwhile, the local governments were displeased as what they described as an attempt by the Imperial Government to increase control of the planet by using the military as a threat.

Imperials stressed that the base would there to protect Asura, not to oppress, and that the YSE's policy of letting Asura III basically run itself was still in place.
