After passing the security point, a young Shoi Kohosei stood at the foot of the office doors with a standard-issue duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He gave a light sigh as he rested it down and rang the doorbell chime for the office his new commanding officer was in.

"Come in," Hanako answered. She was sitting in a plush leather chair behind an old wooden desk with fancy inlaid wood carvings on the front. It was old enough that it had the triangular Army of Uesureya insignia on it instead of a Star Army logo. The office had a large number of computer displays on one all that were showing various maps and information.

The Kohosei attentively strode in and stopped about a meter away from the desk. He snapped to a well-tuned attention and gave a sharp salute, "Kohosei, Hitoshi Takao reporting." His voice was weathered but light and his stance showed experience with the stance of attention at the least. The cadet's face was a lightly tanned cream with angled features, his body was built for work and showed evidence of regular exercise.

Hanako stood and returned his salute. "Pleased to meet you," she said. "Would you like to sit? " she asked, offering him a chair. "You requested an assignment on the Eucharis. What attracted you to this duty station?"

Takao took the offer quietly, sitting down politely. He seemed to think for a moment before looking into her eyes with purpose, "It is not every day that you could have the opportunity to serve on a decorated warship with a decorated commanding officer. I'm not here to make the history texts, I'm here to learn the styles of the officer that the Star Army reveres. I'm here to learn from one veteran officer to train the veteran soldier."

"I see," Hanako noted. "It is kind of you to say you think so highly of me. As for you, what is your story and what do you hope to bring to the crew?"

"I have served on most of the front-line vessel classes currently in service," he added. "And I have experience with this class as well as the 'Super Eikan' and 'Sharie' in different stages of combat. I have also had very close encounters with damage control during the Second Mishhu War, as the enemy learns weaknesses really rapidly in times of war." He took a small breath, "I hope to bring my experiences with starship operations to benefit the lives and operation of this ship."

"You have good timing," the blue-haired admiral noted. "We do need a starship operator right now. Would you mind answering a few more questions?"

"By all means, ask away." His answer was crisp and warm, almost like he was expecting it.

"Can you tell me about your long-term goals?" Hanako asked Takao.

Takao thought again, "Service. After I feel content with my time I will retire to a small home in Kyoto with a colorful garden and await my time. I believe that service to the Empress is the reason I still am around, and I owe it at the least to repay for everything the empire does for me."

"Back when you were enlisted, what was the biggest challenge you had to deal with and how did you handle it?"

"Hmm, I would say that it was when I was forced into a damage control situation during one of the battles during the war. The YSS Imperator and our escorts had come under heavy fire
from the 'NMX' and they had pierced the deck about midway down the center of the hull. I was on my way to the bridge when I was caught in between two opened sections of the hull with a few others. We did our best to hold out against the fires and fought our way to another accessway deeper inside the ship. We suited up and went to work doing out best to make sure the ship wouldn't vent out the crew. Eventually either we drove them off or our damage control did the fighting the 'NMX' couldn't combat against. I personally think it was the latter that scared them off." The last sentence sounded like a small dash of sarcasm covered by his recount.

"One last question: Why did you change your name?" Hanako inquired. "I read in your file you used to have a different one."

Takao seemed to smile, "In short, I didn't like my family name." He seemed to look back into his mind while blankly staring ahead, "And I found out that Jei turned out to be a good name for a young girl, so I jsut went with Takao when I got an upgrade for my current body."

"Alright," Hanako said. "I think you will be a good fit for the crew. Did you have any questions for me?"

"The College asked me to make sure that you understood that I would be on a very long cadet cruise. They asked me to ask you about keeping me on board until you see fit to promote me to Shoi. Is that beyond me?" He sounded slightly confused by his own wording. "They want you to determine my capabilities, I think."

"I understand completely. You are not the first cadet to join the crew," Hanako told him. "If you need any gear, see our supply quartermaster, Victory. Dismissed."

"One last thing ma'am, the last time I was at your museum, I noticed your collection of ship patches." He felt around in one of his uniform pockets before pulling out three patches, YSS Soyokaze, YSS Wakibara, and YSS Imperator. They were a Super Eikan, Plumeria, and Sharie respectively. He extended his hand containing the three, "To add to your collection." He dropped them on her desk before snapping back to attention and giving a parting salute and about-facing out of the office.

"I appreciate this," Hanako said, hiding her excitement. "Thank you, Hitoshi-shoi."

Takao stuck his head back inside the door to give a quick smile before ducking back out and shouldering his duffel bag to find his room assignment.
