Science Lab

Today was going to be different for Walter Hyde. Routine check-ups, brainstorming, keeping to himself, expressing convuluted ideas to Chlorate, was his only routine these past months. Even though Walter promised himself that he would try new activities, he had been, otherwise, slacking on that promise. However, today was going to be a change of pace. He was to see one of his superior officers, Nitô Juni Seinosuke, in the Science Lab. The technician expected to take part in some maintainance work, but the officer didn't specify what the task was at the time. The young Hyde brought his companion, Chlorate, along with him. He figured he could introduce the robot to Seinosuke-juni while he was there; after all, he has yet to introduce her to everyone.

Walter Hyde entered the room, and promptly saluted. "You summoned me, Seinosuke-juni? You did not give the specifics of today's agenda, aside from 'Come to the Science Lab'. Did something break, sir?", he asked.

The FARS floated in, watching Walter. As soon as he mentioned Seinosuke, she slowly spun, looking around to see who he was referring to.

The spacious combined science lab was, to put it lightly, a little cluttered. Vials and microscopes were scattered across the various busy work surfaces like they'd been thrown from a distance. Stacks of disorderly papers, empty mugs and assorted stationary sat around the place. A couple of chairs were scattered here and there, amongst the crates and biohazard containment units resting on the floor. In the middle of it all, was Sein, his fiery wings bobbing to and fro as he worked on some bit of kit.

Upon hearing his two guests enter, the Elysian let loose a little surprised "wha?", narrowly avoiding smacking his head on a nearby piece of machinery. Spinning around lithely in the plush office chair, his emerald eyes lit up at the sight of Walter and Chlorate. "Oh! Come in, come in! I have something I think you might be interested in." Mochi's words rambled into each other as he pulled the magnifying goggles on his gold-locked head and tossed them to a nearby pile of reports.

The Minkan was... Well, he wasn't actually phased by the clutter. Walter didn't expect his officer to be haphazard with materials, though; Walter may as well be in a lair of a mad scientist right now. Before he could go into deeper comparisons, he strolled in, flushing the thoughts out of his mind. His eyes, orange like stars, couldn't help but be transfixed by his officer's wings; colored like raging flames. "What is this ... Interesting subject that you are inclined to share, sir?", Walter asked, standing much taller than his officer. The Minkan couldn't help but notice that he was so tall that Mochi's head only comes up to his shoulders; he is sure that could be made into a pun somehow. Bah, he'll figure it out later.

Chlorate squinted, staring at all the clutter in the room. She seemed oddly confused by it. "Scans show this room is not effeciently organized..." she noted.

The doctor chuckled a little at Chlo's comment, placing his hands behind his back as he took a moment to look over the room himself. "Yaknow, you might be right." he smirked, looking over his shoulder to Chlorate, "Though as they say from entropy comes order." Spinning back around, Mochi apparently took a moment to run his eyes across Walter, almost as if he was being measured up for a suit or some such. "Alrighty.. I've heard good things about you Walter." the officer began.

He paced slowly towards the far corner of the room, where a couple of glass spheres were hooked up together, running down into what seemed like a old wooden barrel beside it. Sein beckoned for the two of them to follow, standing before the contraption. "In fact, you remind me of myself back in the day - the one who does all the hard work on in the background hmm? Am I right?"

"Indeed so, sir. It is an altruistic profession that only pays in currency.", Walter spoke in agreement. "It is reasonable to see why the glory goes to the fighters more so than the menders; although I do not seek glory in my journey, only answers..." The technician couldn't help his curiousity, occassionally looking at the barrel. The nagging feeling prompted him to get a much closer look at the contraption; he kneeled close to it, and inspected the wood, the wires, the fine glass... Yet Walter couldn't figure out what the device did. He stood back up, turning his head to Mochi. "... Though in any case, you are right about the assumption, but beyond that, I fail to see how we are any more alike."

Chlorate wandered over to the barrel, inspecting it. She turned to Mochi and asked "How is he performing all the work in his background processes?" Her glowing eyes looker up and down the buffalo-winged bird, recording visual data on him for the first time.

Seinosuke nodded as Walter answered honestly, which was quite admirable. He opened his mouth to answer a moment before Chlorate spoke, causing his lips to turn into a smirk instead. "I meant in the terms of working without recognition." he responded in amusement, taking his eyes off the barrel before him and casting an analytical glance at the FARS drone. "So, I read your file - excellent record by the way." Mochi commented, turning his head to his taller comrade. "We actually have more in common than you would think. Buuuut..." he trailed off, crouching before the apparatus, wings billowing out as he did like a scorching cloak.
Taking a couple of frosted glasses from beside the mish-mash of tubes and such, the scientist brought them to a thin tube lolling behind the barrel. Twisting a switch gradually, a caramel-ginger liquid began coursing out from it, filling the glasses one by one. "I wondered what you thought of my latest product - from an entirely engineering standpoint of course." Seinosuke grinned, giving Walter a mischevious look as he offered the beverage to him.

Walter hesitated, but took the drink that his superior offered. In all honesty, him getting killed by drinking this is the least of his worries; soul transfering takes the 'risk' out of risks, after all. Walter drank all the fluid from the glass, feeling it burn his mouth and throat, causing him to cough some of it out. "By the stars, what is.... How much alchohol did you put in this drink?", he asked Mochi, eyeing the scientist with a wavering stare. "I w-was inclined to say acid, but it would have melted the cup. Or my tongue... Oh stars, my tongue!"
It just occured to Walter that this may have been a dumb move on his part; a pretty dumb move.

Chlorate beeped in surprise, turning to stare at Walter. "The drink appears to be causing some negative side affects," she commented, "You are describing it as acidic?"

Mochi's eyes widened as Walter proceeded to down the entire cup of drink he'd been given. A sort of blank look of alarm lingered on his face for a second before the Juni glanced around and grabbed a bottle of water from where it lay on its side beside a manual. "Here, have some of this.. uhm.." Sein looked a little sheepishly between Walter and Chlorate.

"Well, now you know what homemade Yamataian whisky tastes like, heh.." he half-chuckled nervously. "Don't worry it won't kill you but by the Empress you're going to feel it in the morning." With that, the Elysian took a deep breath and proceeded to down a large mouthful of the stuff himself. Hissing a little and curling his lips, Mochi nodded. "There we go.. Jesus.. Can hardly let you get ahead of me, can I?"

Although Walter felt like his brain was kicked out of his skull, he knew that he couldn't get any worse beyond that. He blushed, smirking, and took the water to get a few sips for his parched throat. "Thanks, but I-I should be fine in the meantime... Remember, Minkans and Nekovalkyrians have a robust metabolism and toxin-countering saftey measures. Not sure if I c-can keep drinking that, I'm not a biologist...", said the Minkan, dropping his proper speaking in his muddled condition. "W-what did you even use to make this? It feels like pure alchohol!"

Then again, Walter never had strong beverages like this before, with his parents not approving of anything besides water and all that. Looking at the barrel, he wondered how much he could drink until he could overcome his resistance.

Chlorate stared at Walter, looking... Worried? Even her hair had turned yellow. She continued staring at him until he stopped talking, then she eventually started looking at Mochi. "My apologies, but I do not know your name," she said, "Would you be willing to inform me of what your name is?"

"M-Uh..?" Mochi began, the effect of the whisky obvious immediately. "Hrmp.. I think we need to sit down.." the scientist muttered, grabbing two wheely office chairs from nearby the contraption's desk. He gently pushed one towards Walter while plonking himself down in the other with some disregard for how hard he did so. "Man.. I forget I'm not still a Minkan sometimes.." Sein tried again, walking his chair over to the others while he was sitting with his feet. "My name is Iemochi Seinosuke, expectant father, SOFT Leader, Chief uh.. Science Officer and creator of species." the Juni spoke to Chlorate in a weird tone, resting his elbow on the desk beside him. "..And I make whisky according to my uh... family recipe." he finished, topping up his glass.

Walter rubbed one of his temples, his other hand, while shaky, held the glass firmly in its grasp. His addled mind began to clear up; a cue to get another round of the Elysian's family treasure, and drink all of that in one sitting. Huh, guess it ain't so bad the second time around, Walter thought. "You know, safety ... Putting Safety regulations aside for the meantime, this is a fine brew you made. Although this is also my first drink, so take it with... Erm, grain of salt. Take it with a grain of salt, sir."

After a moment of silence, he spoke up again; this time, as a question. "I ... I heard about you at times. I just stick in the back and listen, as opposed to coming out. But... You aren't a real Elysian, sir?" Walter sat down on the ground, by the barrel with the stupidly strong alchohol.

Sein seemed to deflect the last comment, instead changing the subject. "First drink? Wow, I'm honored to have had it with you." Mochi grinned, letting the refilling tube dangle between the two of them. The scientist gestured to the provider of the tasty substance openly, "Help yourself, of course. No use lying about in a container, is it?"

He seemed to get lost staring into the caramel toned and potent smelling liquid for a few long seconds, swirling it around in the frosted glass. "It's quite a personal topic but if you mean was I born an Elysian? No, I wasn't." he smiled finally, meeting Walter's orange eyes before taking another sip of the drink. "I like to think I earned my right to join their ranks though."

Chlorate looked at Mochi, confused. "This... does not compute... you were not born an Elysian, but you are an Elysian right now." She eyed his wings. "How... were you not born an Elysian if you are an Elysian right now?"

Walter, wise in the ways of desire, was able to understand his superior's motives, even if he didn't know the why's of the logic behind it. "You'll sometimes meet people, s-such as Seinosuke-juni, whom have adopted new bodies for themselves. Some change appearances, some change genders, some change their own species, others go for a mix. Yamatai always had the biological technology since its inception, in fact.", he clarified to Chlorate. He reached over to the barrel, grabbed a refill, and downed the entire cup once again!
"OooOooooOooh boy...", Walter moaned, feeling headaches coming around as his toxin-breaking defenses worked harder to keep the Minkan healthy. "N-not down yet, but... Ow, head hurts... Just going to... I am going to hold off on the drinks for a bit.", he said as he put the cup down. He chuckled as his alcohol-induced brain wandered to uncharacteristically silly ideas; he is far from being in a drunk stupor, since he still has the brain cells to hold off from drinking any more of it. "He he, a-anyway, Seino just... You know, he decided to be an Elysian, so he worked with some doctors, and schedules and appointment, and now he's got wings of inferno! Dunno how much you were involved with the process, since... I just never seen wings like them before, sir." The Minkan, even when he isn't that drunk, was still drunk enough to stumble between proper and casual tongue.

Seinosuke blinked a few times at how Walter downed another full cup of his potent brew, he himself was barely through one and a half. Still, nothing bad could really occur to Walter yet he had to be more careful. The pheonix took another moderate sip from his glass, shuffling to get a little more comfy on his seat. "Good idea, Walter." he chuckled. "Wings of inferno!" Mochi broke into a small fit of laughter, tears forming in his eyes as he leaned forwards in a series of guffaws.

"Just like you, eh, Walt? You've had your fair share of upgrades over the years. I just decided I had enough of humanity and decided to be more like my beloved wife." he smiled gently, leaning back in his char, jade eyes a little distant. "Bloody hell though, it was hi- hard work to get these feathery things!" Mochi stretched his wings out fully, raven-shaped and reflecting the light in a variety of sunset tones. "Had to do it all myself! In fact I've been talking to a - *hic - Elysian Senator about it because apparently this body is an entirely new subspecies?! Did not expect to be doing that a year ago." He took a long, drawn out sip from his glass, probably to calm himself more than anything.

"Really? Get out of town!", the technician jested. "Scoring a marriage, inventing a subspecies, rising the ranks, talking to senators, where does that bucket list end for you?!" Walter laughed at the end of that, almost knocking his empty glass over. "You're coloring me green, sir, but I'd be lying if I claimed that you didn't deserve all that."

Walter leaned on the wooden barrel, sighing. "... Well, I mean, yeah. I got upgraded, too. Some people changed bodies faster than you spend a package of paper plates, but I stuck with this look ever since the Plague.", he explained to Mochi, with less jolly, but no weight or regret. "My father was the one who pushed for upgrades where I have cared less. He's never been able to move on from that mess, even when it happened years ago. I'm not against it upgrading, but like my grandfather before me, I find comfort in familiarity."

Chlorate looked at Walter and Seinosuke. Body... body... Even though she was getting a body soon, with all this talk about bodies she couldn't help but feel left out. She hovered over to a chair and descended into it, her little hologram appeared to be frowning and sitting down on the edge of it. She then looked down and... sighed...

Mochi shrugged, waving his free hand dismissively. "Hey, it just sort of happened I g.. I guesst . I didn't really ask for it, it just happened, heh." It was obvious the drink was most certainly kicking in. "I was the opposite, my old body reminded me of too many hrm.. bad memories." It was the understatement of the century but Sein wasn't one to mope. "Did you lose anyone you knew in the Plague?" the Juni asked calmly, taking yet another sip from the glass.

It was at this moment he spotted Chlorate looking rather down about herself. "Hey.. What's wrong?" he frowned a little, tilting his head to one side. Having been through a fair amount himself, it was instinctive for him to help those who were sad. "You want some whisky? I know FARS have chemical analysers~?" Mochi smiled, shaking his glass a bit to tempt her.

"Scanning... All systems are functional, nothing is wrong." She sighed again, looking at the whiskey. "I do not see the purpose of analyzing the chemical composition of this item." She looked back down, at the floor.

The techie shrugged. "No one that I can remember. ", he answered as his head cleared. He reached over to the tap, his glass now in hand, and refilled the cup. This time, he had absolutely no intention of downing another cup full of this drink; instead, he'll take his time with it. "I was born after all that happened, so a lot of what I know just came from school and the like."

After a moment, he changed topics, with The Plague being a poor conversation piece. "Actually, I'm working with a few people to get her a body of her own. I figured, as her guardian, the right thing for Chlorate," Walter gestured to the FARS as he elaborated, "is to help her feel approachable and be readily welcomed by the crew. Currently the drone form is... Less than optimal."

"Hmm.." Mochi nodded a few times, then glanced around his lab. "Well, if you need anything from here to help with that, take it. Just uh- knock before you come in. Sometimes I fall asleep in here by accident and I'd rather not have a heart attack." the doctor chuckled, leaning back in his seat and taking a good whiff of his beverage. Sandalwood, mhm~ "I know how it feels to want to change your look, so if I can assist at all don't hesitiate." the pheonix offered to the two, looking between then once or twice.

Chlorate looked up at Mochi. "Yes, this current form is... rather limiting..." They swore they could see her hair flash pink for a split second when Walter said "as her guardian".

"Heh heh, yeah! We'll get in touch with you once we settled on some design elements.", Walter said, accepting Mochi's offer. He took a sip from his cup, the alchohol burning his mouth, his abdomen getting cramps, but all in the while still feeling pretty good. Walter brushed his raven-black hair back, brushing off the thought of her hair turning pink at that moment. "Oh yeah, I guess we'll probably knock when we come in, too." Walter added as he got up from the floor, feeling ready to leave the psuedo-Elysian to his work and drink.

"Hang on, one mo.." the pheonix slurred a little, fumbling under a nearby pile of stuff to pull out a screw-capped glass bottle. Wobbling a little, he popped the neck under his trusty barrel, letting it fill nearly to the brim. "Here mate, take this with 'ya." he smiled, waving the whisky to Walter. "Don't drink it all at once you crazy Minkan.." his eyes blinked slowly, the effects of the potent brew setting in. The officer turned to Chlorate, observing her with slightly bleary eyes - "Do you have a family, my dear? I never had a family. Would you like a family?"

Chlorate looked at the bird and tilted her holographic head. "A... fam-ily?" she wondered. "What is a fam-ily?" She stared at the officer in confusion, genuinely not knowing what he meant.

Walter started to worry greatly; also kind of jealous, since he is kind of already caring for Chlorate already. Why should his superior have to dictate for the fate of his companion, when it is Walter whom had a greater investment than the phoenix could grow to care in his lifetime?! He stepped in front of Chlorate, eyeing down at Seinosuke-juni with fiery orange eyes. "Don't worry about that, Chlorate. I'll tell you once we get to my bunk... For now, I will be taking -" the technician takes Mochi's drink with a swift swipe, "- this from your hands, as per your request. Seinosuke-juni is just feeling ill, Chlorate. He already has a family, and does not need extra responsibilities." He turned around, the two drinks in hand, and walked off with stumble in his step. "Come on Chlorate, we have to let him rest for the time being. You wouldn't like to worsen his condition, would you?"

Internally, the superior officer felt a storm brewing behind his drink-hazed mind. Walter was glaring him down like he'd just shot Chlorate in the motherboard, causing the Juni's brows to furrow. "Walte-" he began, before the drink offered in friendship was snatched by the hand of greed. "..." the scientist sat here in silence, watching the man he thought to be a potential friend stumble away, knocking his things about on the floor. Part of him wanted to stand and shout at the man for interpreting his feelings and telling a superior officer, a SOFT leader, what he could and couldn't do.

Instead, the expectant father knew whatever he said in this condition wouldn't reflect his true feelings. He only offered because he'd been in a dark, dark position for the majority of his life when it came to family - even his own father had sent men to wipe him away like a living stain. Not many had felt what he had, the loneniness, inadequacy, abandonment. He needed to offer an escape if she was feeling similar, if nothing else. Walter had asked earlier why he'd reaced the positions he had. It was all his drive for acceptable, confirmation. Outside of this ship, he had nothing. Nothing at all, not that he would ever admit it. "Careful, Santo Hei." he muttered glumly, barely audible to Walter's distant ears, "Don't let the drink change you."

Chlorate's eyes raced between Mochi and Walter. "I... I..." she said, unsure. And though as curious as she was about what Seinosuke had to say, and noticing how he clearly wasn't finished, she realized she had to listen to Walter. She was the robot here, moreover she was even Walter's personal FARS, she couldn't do anything, she had to listen to Walter. "...Affirm... ative..." she said, looking down, slightly disappointed. She turned around and slowly began to hover following Walter, having no choice but to follow his instructions in this situation.

The younger, less experienced Hyde, with Chlorate at his side, walked away from the Elysian, however stopped short at the doorway, his back to the man who has accomplished much more compared to him. The Minkan gave his own final words, keeping composure and bottling certain feelings from his officer that he felt too ashamed to bear to him. "I... We can talk later, once we've both cleared our heads. Until then, remember that I'm thankful for your time and generousity.", he said, his hands clasped onto the drinks, as he walked out the science lab, with two glasses of whiskey and a bottle of repressed emotions.
