Machines whined and whirred around the edges of the med bay, numerous instruments of all sorts - medical and scientific - lay in apparent disarray upon tables dotted around the room. Glaring examination lights protruded from the ceiling of the bay, they beamed down upon a operation table lying in the center of the room. Upon this retrofitted table lay what remained of a L'Kor cadaver, stripped down to bone and sinew. Nearby, the satisfied and ecstatic Seinosuke Iemochi shrugged off a stained hazmat suit; the science officer carefully hooked the garment onto a chromed hook inside one of the many storage units.

With a content sigh and a smile, Mochi grabbed his usual labcoat from where it lay draped over a nearby seat. Following several hours of intense and intriguing work, he had managed to examine a near-intact specimen of their enemy rather than scraps as with their other engagements. Stepling once more to the central table, he crouched and threw a sheet of opaque plastic covering roughly over his handiwork in case anyone happened to walk in once he announced he was finished.

Unbeknownst to the Juni, one corner of the sheet in question swiped a glass vial resting on one of the nearby tool-bearing tables to the hard floor, the rustling of plastic obscuring the tinkling of glass. The shattered vial had incidentally contained what Sein suspected of being the raw form of a pheromone, used in this case during the mating ritual of the L'Kor.

Mochi cocked his head to one side, as if he had half-noticed something was amiss. After a moment, he shrugged and stood from his crouched position. With a few taps of his equipment the scientist relayed his message - "The med bay is now clear to enter, the little birdy was quite interesting." He had no doubt curiosity would get the better of some crew members, the opportunity to see one of these things up close without threat was a tempting one.

Taii Teien Eden had just gotten out of the grips of the captain's suite, having had a lovely beginning to a lovely day, and stood on the bridge, listening to Iemochi's report.

She nodded tersely and said to Boss, "This would be a good time for backups. Have non-mandatory ST backups in the medical bay today and tomorrow, Boss."

The AI sent out a message to the crew, instructing them to get themselves backed up in the medical bay, where Iemochi had just knocked over the dubious pheromones.

It's Valentine's day. The day where the mythical "red string of fate" was the most prevalent.
The day of kisses, hugs, and making out in weird places and no one would care.
The day of roses, romance, and romping.
And so, naturally, Meissa...

...was snacking on a bar of chocolate with two other bars in her pocket, while curled up on a booth's chair in the wardroom. Well, it was certainly not exceeding what expectations already existed for her. She heard the message, lazily got up from her spot, and with probably the messiest hair she had been spotted with for a while, made her way down to the medbay.

Yoshida had been going about her daily duties, training, assisting others where she could, and taking the all important showers. She stopped as she heard the message from the med bay for a moment. She really did consider going down there but, she had a job to do! She moved for only a moment longer going about her day when the message from the AI, informing her to go get a medical backup. She grinned for a moment before nodding to herself and strolling to the medbay, hardly stopping as she opened the door and moved on inside. "Heeyy Medical backup time yeah?" She of course took a good long look at the corpse upon the operating table before anything else however, she wasn't sure how often she'd get to see them up close like this without them shooting back.

"I guess. Time to get stabbed with a needle." Meissa groaned, arriving about the same time as Yoshida.
Hospitals. Horrible places. Reeked of clean, and biochemical assault on her nose, and cleaning solution, and too much medicine, and sometimes burning, and sometimes blood, and above all else, death. Ironic that hospitals were the place lives were saved.
Actually, come to think of it, she didn't mind the smell of blood too much.
And something else this time. She couldn't pin it down. But certainly something else. Meh. Typical hospital smell.
"Chocolate bar?" She held one out to Yoshida.

Carter was interrupted from the tail end of a workout he'd been building into his schedule since he'd started sparring with Meissa. He'd already been awake for several hours, having had breakfast early and run through his routine checks. The announcement from Boss came as a surprise. As he quickly cleaned himself up and prepared to head to the medbay, his mind wandered back to his first ST-backup. It had been an extremely uncomfortable experience. He remembered the strange feeling of the machine taking a snapshot of his brain, an instant copy of... Him, as he was on his first day. He noted that it wasn't mandatory, and almost decided to simply ignore it. However, the thought occured to him that, if he were to die, he'd be back to square one with everyone on board the ship. He'd lose the memories he had of the crew, his squad... He decided to go through with the backup. After all, he couldn't very well function with his team if he forgot what they were capable of! Not to mention all of the trust he'd built up in the soldiers who'd fought alongside him suddenly being gone. He had to go! Purely for tactical reasons, of course.

Riiiight. You keep on telling yourself that.

Carter walked into the medbay shortly after Meissa and Yoshida, wrinkling his nose at the strange smell that assaulted him as soon as he entered the room. Why couldn't Lemochi have vented the med bay after he was done with his L'Kor autopsy... "Oh well," he thought, "I won't be smelling it for much longer. Let's get this over with."

He strode over to an open table, greeting the Neko and Elysian as he passed them. "Hey Meissa, Yosh." At a glance, he seemed a bit distracted.

Mat walked himself down to the med bay, still sleepy after being woken up by Boss. While today was love day, he, like most of the crew, would be spending it alone.

This was going to be his first ST. He wasn't sure what was involved, but he was sure it wouldn't be pleasant.

Shan had been in her usual place on the bridge, albeit less panicked slightly, when the notifications came in. "Hm. Guess that might be important," she muttered to herself as she dismounted from her chair and took a roundabout pathway to the medbay. The few extra seconds she used brought with them a strange thought, which was subsequently blurted out slightly before and during her entrance. "Hmm, a mental back-up system like this could be exploited by anyone with the right equipment and training for a remarkably effective torture system." Her gemstone-like eyes drifted through the room cleanly, although not potent enough to see the broken glass. She took a couple deep breaths, before coughing lightly and muttering something about somebody not showering.

Medical Bay

The executive officer of the Kaiyo quietly walked her way to the medical bay after hearing the announcement. Just before she came to the door she sent a quick message to Eden, "Are you getting your backup today as well?" The reason behind her question was a little embarrassing to her, she didn't like anything medical, from surgeries to checkups.

Misaki entered the medical bay and tugged on her uniform and seemed to rub her thumb and index finger together on her right hand in a somewhat odd manner, though her face looked as it always did. Her expression was calm, collected, and shy looking as she walked towards one of the tables and seemed to drift away from one table holding the corpse.

She eventually found herself walking to the medical officer and asking, "So when do we get started with this?" She crossed her arms a little awkwardly and felt a little off about the room. What was odd, was the feeling in her mind. She wished Eden was here.

Wardroom

Irit was resting peacefully, enjoying a short tumblr of orange juice and sliced melon for a late breakfast when the ship's AI flashed an alert; ST Backup time! Curses bent the ear of the cook, and anyone else handy, as she hastily shoved everything together. Dumped into the return, all except for the last remaining sliver of melon between her teeth, the athletic medic bounded out into zero-G with her finger already on the com button.

Her short text message to Teien-taii was excrutiatingly polite, especially since it was being sent to the person with absolute power over her fate, asking that in the future her medical technician be alerted of planned procedures that required her presence. She didn't sleep in the medbay after all.

Medical Bay

"Okay! Everyone is piling in!" Irit declared from behind the small not of feather-winged humanoids and their cat-featured comrades. Despite her distinctly Elysian features, slight build, that naturally aristocratic caste of facial features even the caesoleians posessed... Yet... No wings. Not even any sign of wings. What she did have was the red diamond shaped patch of a Star Army Medic and the matching blue panel of her uniform.

"Let's make a line people, make a line," she clapped her hands and made a pushing motion at them, "Carter, Kokoro, Nashira, Shinomori, scoot. And which of you smells like mating ducks?"

"Norogumi-chui!" Irit turned to the door as the executive officer appeared, and the Elysian did a rapid-fire bow, "Welcome to the club! We're all standing around while I try to get at the MTBU."

"Oh, chocolate sure!" She nodded and grabbed at the chocolate bar, and quickly stripped it of its protection as she chomped down. She sniffed a bit and shrugged, barely noticing whatever smell the others were complaining about, and mumbled around her chocolate bar at the medic. "Mhp maybeh ets the dead L'kor!" She swallowed before continuing, shuffling over to let the medic move freely, quietly marveling at how fast everyone just absolutely piled in. She of course afterward, proceded to pat the small bridge bird muttering about torture as she passed "That's against the rules!"

Medical Bay

"....it is highly illegal, but I may torture whoever left a rotting corpse on my OR table," Irit pressed her whole palm firmly into her face, finally able to actually see around the whole, admittedly compact, Medbay. Shooting a pained look at the only officer present, she took a deep breath.... Felt even more lightheaded then before, then let it out. Flushing slightly, she pushed up the arms of her duty uniform.

"Oooookay, wow, that, uh, huh. That's pretty heady. And not in a corpselike fashion...." she shook her head, "Right, uh, ST backups. This takes a minute, those of you who haven't done them before. We need to verify your information, wills, next-of-kin, and if you already have a backup! There is one. Unit. So socialize among yourselves. Who's first?"

Medical Bay

Carter quickly complied in scooting into line for the ST, appreciating Irit's efficiency. As he waited, his mind began to wander once more. He was one of what, four males on board this ship? Five if you counted the teenaged swordsman who'd joined on as one of the VIP's bodyguards. He briefly wondered what the rules were for romantic relationships on board an active ship... He brushed the thought out of his mind. What was going on with him today? He quickly shook his head, and averted his wandering eyes to the corner of the medbay ceiling. These were his crewmates. The closest thing he'd have to family as long as he served on board this ship. They deserved more respect than his currently chemically influenced brain was giving them.

"Technically it isn't against the rules I think, respawning and repeatedly killing someone for torture." She bluntly stated. She noticed her hair was flopping down and blew her hair back with a puff of breath.
"But then I'd have to be the one getting my hands dirty, unlike your...little delicate hands." She grabbed one of Arbs's hands by the wrist, while the other hand felt her hand in all of its small, soft, paleness.

"It would be more an excercise in sadism than anything. They wouldn't remember the torture unless you backed up their minds every single time before you actually killed them. Though I suppose it would let you try different methods with a fresh body as many times as you want." Carter said in a matter-of-fact tone, still doing his best to avoid looking directly at the rest of the crewmembers in the Medbay.

Medical Bay

"Guess who's bucking for remedial ethics training!" Irit interjected, her communicator's AR display up as she sorted through the messy form sorting itself into what could be called a 'line'. She booped Carter and Meissa on the shoulder, "One, two. Ready, Carter-hei, to have all your deepest secrets committed to a probably secure data format?"

"Hey now, I'm not advocating it, just thinking about the implications." Carter said as he raised his hands in a gesture of surrender. "And yes. I'm as ready as I'll ever be." His shifting eyes and vaguely uncomfortable expression said otherwise, but he moved over and lay down on the MTBU table regardless.

"I will be there in a half hour to an hour, Saki," Eden said over telepathy to the XO. "You will be fine, I promise. There are a few memories that should be fresh in your mind that I want you to think about when you get your backup. The moment you are getting it, think back on those good times and you will have the overjoyous memories of the two of us to have at the forefront of your mind."

She looked over to the starship operators and back to the viewscreen of what their sensors and scanners were picking up before uncrossing and crossing her legs. She sighed inaudibly and longed to be there with Saki. But duty called.

Medical Bay

Misaki took a position about midway through the line, staying quiet and had her head down as she received her message and began remembering those thoughts. It was helping, but she was still trying to make herself not scared to get the updated soul saved. She really liked what she could remember and would rather still have it if things go south. She sighed and seemed to be hugging her white paneled uniform as if waiting on something to happen.

Her mind drifted away from the medical bay, and drifted to Eden. She briefly thought of cuddling her in her captain's chair before seeming to blink her way out of the thought, blushing slightly. She then calmly stepped out of line and decided to wait, she looked around to the person behind her and calmly ushered them to take her spot in line before she retreated to the end to wait.

"Yes I know it's ill-" she stopped speaking mid-sentence and looked upwards at Meissa, before attempting to wiggle away from her crazy roommate. "M-Meissa please, you sound like you're crazy all of a sudden..." She looked about the room for someone with which she could make a distraction to escape the explosives one, with varying estimations appearing on her face. At Carter, no he's busy. At Yoshida... She's right there. Also no. Mat? She blushed a little at their uhh... Earlier experience... But decided the klutz might be better a partner than the person most likely to blow everyone up. As she took a step towards Mat, Arb attempted to escape from the grip of her cabin mate before things got worse.
