Star Army Uniforms: A Look Back

I wasn't there for much of this stuff, so it's fascinating seeing how all of the uniforms have changed! This thread reminds me a bit of how some of the military reference books I own detail uniforms - in a decidedly good sense, of course.

Let's face it, there is some entertainment value in the way Yamatai updates its uniforms over time! :p

Also it's kind of neat that during many of Yamatai's major wars, there was a "look" that the Star Army had, in the way that the US Army has a distinctive "look" that it had during Vietnam, WW2, the Civil War, The Gulf War, and so on. In the same way, if you see a character dressed in a Star Army Type 30B duty uniform, you can deduce that she probably fought in the Second Mishhuvurthyar War.

Very true. I don't think I'll be able to continue this until later in the month, or maybe even until January, but it's definitely something I'd like to do. And regarding the uniforms, I believe Aendri is correct. That many stuck to them demonstrates that some uniforms simply became far more iconic than others, and demonstrated that new does not equal better. The events, experiences and roleplay that players went through with them only cemented their fondness of these certain uniforms, something that isn't possible if the uniform design wasn't as good as it was to begin with.

We're not done yet! Keep going, lol.

Before the next devastating wave hits me, what would people like me to do next? So far, these are the ones I've already covered:
  • Coverall, Type 1
  • Female Body Suit Uniform, Type 22
  • Dress Uniform, Type 22
  • Duty Uniform, Type 30A
  • Duty Uniform, Type 30B
  • Male Duty Uniform, Type 22
  • Female Body Suit, Type 30

Sorry, I misread your post and thought you were listing options to cover next.

How about the Aerospace Flight Suit, Type 31 Field Uniform, Engineering Protective Jumpsuit, or the appearance of the Star Army Cap and Star Army Coat in YE 32?

Ok, that took way longer than I intended!

This time around, we got the Type 31 Engineering Protective Jumpsuit, designed to, you guessed it! Keep you from getting killed when the consoles in engineering inevitably explode with a shower of flaming fragments and arcing electricity because Star Fleet was staffed by cheapskates that couldn't into war. Wait, wrong setting! My bad. In all seriousness though, the T-31 EPJ was designed to protect engineers while on the job. Working as an engineer on a ship is often as hazardous as it is vital, especially when enemy ships are looking to core your ship, or when enemy boarding parties scramble for your very work department. The one that happens to house hyper-energetic reactions capable of annihilating entire cities with ease. That one.

(The four images here are all that I could find however, and though I'm familiar with Blueberry, Yuzuki and Rin, I don't know who the one in the blue version of the suit is. If anyone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it a lot.)

The Star Army realized engineers needed protection, so the Type 31 EPJ was created. This form fitting, one piece garment can be worn with or without clothing underneath, and won't snag on any corners or protruding objects when climbing through tight confines; a key, important little detail that is often forgotten. Additionally, it provides excellent protection against electrical and radiological hazards, and though not stated, I imagine the suit's weave is rated to protect against low-end fragmentation, shrapnel and spall similar in nature to what one would get from a hand grenade. Finally, the suit is, perhaps most importantly, good looking. Sporting curves and aesthetics similar to the popular plug suits of Evangelion, it's hard not to like them. For all its upsides though, there are downsides as well. Without a helmet of its own, the protection it provides is considerably reduced in effectiveness, and if atmosphere is lost, one might as well be in an AMES.

However, the very benefits of the AMES renders it unsuitable for engineering works at times, namely, the back pod getting in the way of things. The helmet itself, while useful, is also just as cumbersome when not in use too. With a few alterations however, these problems could be easily addressed with the Type 31 Environmental Protection Suit or its successor. The most important change however, would likely be a "Guild" type membrane helmet from "The Last Exile" that flows over and encloses the head when active, and when not in use, is unnoticeable and completely out of the way. An air supply for 10 minutes to half an hour, in a small, sleek container would be all this suit needs.

One of the reasons the EPJ was discontinued was because it wasn't one-piece.

That's hilarious. This whole time, I thought it was. Though, I still haven't been able to figure out; who is that character?

Which uniform is next? *bump*

Oh geeze, thanks for the reminder. I'm actually not sure right now, since it's been out of mind with all the stuff that's been happening. Any suggestions?

Well, we left off at YE 31, so what about the appearance of the Star Army Cap and Star Army Coat in YE 32?
