Star System Template

Yeah. The new template contains the information our out-of-date guide (it's not actually out of date, if it were Wes would not have left that information on the guide during his substantive edit on 2016/11/04 07:25) asks for. That's exactly what I'm saying.

The template lives up to the (not) out-of-date guide.

As I recall, you are allowed to add whatever information you want to a template, if it does not have that information standard.

However, you can only remove it, if it does not apply to the article.

This means, that if we make it that such problematic information is not mandatory, you can still add it. But because the information applies to a star system, you can't remove it.

I don't see the problem with making it not mandatory to have these numbers. You can still add them. You have every right to add them.

There will always be exceptions to the rules. Madi likes diving real deep into hard science. They are trying to join NASA.

I don't think you realize what I'm talking about Raz. I'm not referring to the planets in the system. Rather, I'm very specifically referring to the system's star. The new template demands that the system's star has information about its semi-major axis, orbital period and rotation, which I do not believe had been required before.

All of those info points are legitimately requested as standard for celestial bodies on the Creating a Star System guide. Good god.

Yes, the guide asks that for planets, but not stars Raz. I'm very specifically focusing on the star here. And I don't think coming up with an entirely new template is necessary Ame - just snipping the three points I mentioned off would do fine.

This seems like a matter of noticing that those points belong under the planet headers rather than the star header and then making that adjustment yourself.

Rofl+lmao.

Sorry, @META_mahn, but some of us non-neurotics want to make star systems without having to list every single variable that could be possible to give to describe a star. It's stopping people from making content for the wiki, (i.e. me), is essentially unnecessary for the majority of RP, and isn't on the flagship system's wiki page. Please, get rid of this stuff. If you really want to do it, add it yourself.

I'm afraid not Raz. From what I have seen of Ametheliana's action as a tech mod, those numbers appear to apply to the star, not the planets.

Double posting, additionally I think there needs to be a lot more fluff on these articles then numbers, such as what the individual planets are like, what are living conditions on the surface for its population, etc.

Having been through the system approval process twice in the last two months, I can say that some numbers don't matter, as we will not be RPing on this site for the next million years. Star rotation period does matter, if you are into astrophysics.

While i didn't have a problem with all the numbers, I have been asked by some number of people who have been working on star systems about what would be a good number for X. I can see both points on this, but in my opinion, we should look to the Yamatai standard for guidance in all things, should we not?

Yeah it's not a big deal including all the info for planets but I don't know when a star's orbital period or orbital radius are going to be needed. Would put those as optional.

All of the numbers people want to remove can be used for something. Even the semi-major axis of a star relative to its galactic core can be used by super hard sci-fi people to speculatively calculate stuff like the volume of Kagami Galaxy.

I, personally, think all of the statistics should be gone because muh I don't use them in RP. Does that mean stuff should be taken away from the template, though? Heck no.

No, pretty sure that would be how long it takes the star to complete one orbit around the galaxy. Orbital period of a planet is how long the planet's years are.

The system is the one with the orbital period? That's a tad bit odd and far less usable in contrast. If that's the case, though, I'd think we could simply make that section optional (rather than remove it from the template). People tend to forget we could simply make optional sections of the templates, versus removing things.

Removing them is literally the same as making them optional in this case. The template only determines the minimum requirement to get something passed.
