Switching careers

Didn't see this on the board yet, so I thought I'd ask.

Is it possible to work as one thing for a while, gain more skills, and then switch careers?

Example: Talon, over the course of his pilot career in Star Army learned how to work the ship's computer, and decides to ask if he may begin to earn rankings on the bridge as a crewman instead of in combat.

OR

Example: Talon decides he would much rather work ON power armor than work IN power armor, and requests to put his repair talents to use as an engineer.

Thanks,

-Talon

It would have to be directly connected. If you're trained for it, you're trained for it and it's your job until you earn a designation of otherwise in the YSA. They also (if it's needed) would have to approve retraining for whatever reason. You might gain a proficency doing something in your spare time if it's fesible, but you need an official qualification with the YSA to have a job title as such.

Ah, I see.

The reason I asked was that I gave Talon a few skills that would make sense for him to have, but are not directly related to his pilot occupation... such as repair/maintenance. I figure he would have learned it so that he could repair his own crafts... etc.

Also wanted to know if I took that skill in vain. :p

Well it stands to reason that one wouldn't forget the skills they learned in a previous job, even if they leave it. technically the older chars here should theroetically have huge skill lists...but nobody in their right mind could describe them all in an acceptable way. Imagine if Yui's skill list was posted up here? shit man it'd take an hour to read it.! XD

That's because she'd have every skill Tyler.

Remember, she's been around since the Star Army was founded.

Actually, you can list every skill area in your character's biography as soon as he's approved (or even before, perhaps). No one's ever done it, though, since there's not much benefit of listing all the skill areas your character has no skill in.

"$PLAYER_CHAR_NAME has no idea how to operate a ground vehicle, and would probably cause a minor car accident the first time he tried."

lol.

This is something I have been utterly LOOKING for. I recall that one of the threads I necro'd involved when skills had changed. However, this is something I've not been able to find in the entirety of SARP during my time here.

Is it possible (with the current skill system) to acquire more than the initial fields for characters? It goes without reason that as characters are on the site they should logically be advancing their skill sets... but, at the same time, I figure that there's reason to limit it just from fear of huge multiple-role aces.

Absolutely. Your character's skills will only continue to widen and row as they learn more stuff through training and life experiences.
