Sheela laid on the cot, snuggled in a sleeping bag, cleaned up, wearing fresh issue military underwear. Looking around the dark room with light just enough to see by, filtering into the little barrack room she was assigned to.

It was erie to hear the soft wind rustling the vegetations outside of the building and the play of shadows on the other wall oppisite of the window.

The footlocker with her new clothes folded away inside and a new one set on top for her to wear the following day. The simple table with a lamp and chair. Only furniture in the otherwise barren room, besides the cot she lay on.

She smiled at recieving a pair of boots that actually fit her feet. Snug, but not restricting.

"yes!" a soft sighing exclaimation escape her lips in delight. She was warm, well fed, clean and new clothes. It felt erotic to be wearing the simple government issue feminine undergarments. And not to itch from being dirty all the time.

She loved the smell of being clean and the residue of the soap's and shampoo's scent that lingered after drying off from the unlimited shower of hot water.

Was this heavan or hell? But for now she took it at face value as this was difinitely a lot better than the enclave back in the Outercity. She would work her butt off to keep even these simple pleasures.

Glancing at the table, seeing the manuels, books, that she had to learn by heart and comply with to fit in with these people here. She learned by trail and error to operate the big Akiashiro Main Battle Mech and now she would learn the nuances and how fight the beast with those beside her in the small more agile mechs.

She would be queen with her little battle bees to bring destruction down upon those that threatened her hive and new found home.

::Outercity::

"Annie" finished with the last of the dishes being put away as the old woman chatted about her responicibilies were while having a place to stay. She listened and making non-committal sounds to let the old lady know she was listening.

She sat next to the old lady whose name was Maggie, and would be adressed as Mother, for when she asked what her name was, she was scolded as if she was her daughter, "Why you always called me Mother, Mumma, my dearest Sophia. You must've forgotten or the war with the Crabs effected your mind! Coming home in your underwear as a decent lady should not be wearing! Boots are for men!" Them ..the boots...have been taken away from her and thrown out into the hallway, lost to her forever or fate as it may decree come back to her. But being outter city, the boots never even hit the floor as they was fought over by the locals that needed new shoes.

Maggie made, now Sophia, strip outta of her last remaining clothes as punishment for being so unladylike and to remind her that she was female and had no business wearing men's clothing.

"Sophia" had spent the time naked as she made Maggie's and her's dinner. Eat it and was still naked, finishing up cleaning the day's last meal.

Maggie had Sophia help her to her bedroom, and get ready for bed. Sophia turned to leave, but Maggie stopped her and pointed to a rather large petbed. "You sleep there. I can't have my wayward daughter outta my sight for the bad habits you picked up while being away from me."

Sophia sighed softly, nodding her acceptance to her fate and curled up on the petbed. It was comfortable as Maggie clapped her hands and the lights went out.

Daylight. Dawning of a new day as the sun peeked over the horizon, once again bringing forth life as shadows sharpned and color sprang forth once again to reviel citizens forth from the safetly of the building where they huddled enmass for safety of numbers and rest. Refreshed for the upcoming challenges.

Sophia, the ex-cutter crewperson, now a "daughter" to senile old Maggie who showed her what to wear to be a proper female in gowns and multi-purpose slippers.

The Agent from Core City, stretching in his stakeout position watching the building, feeling the night exhaustion creeping up on him along with hungerpains of the nightlong vigilance

NMX Crab scout watching the surgence of the hated humans and their prey emerge from their places of refuge, tearing a chunk of flesh from a stray dog that wandered to close.

::Countryside:: 22 Mech Regiment ::

Sheela woke to the sound of bugles rining through the camp, waking it's occupants. She stretched and, unzipping the sleeping bag and exposing her bare limbs to the cool morning air. Disorientated at first, then scampered to freshen up and get dressed for the busy day ahead of her.

::Countryside:: 22 Mech Regiment ::

Sheela smiled as she sat in her big main battle mech control center, reading the operation manuel and looking at the various systems as she came across them in the manuel, learning more and more about the big Akiashiro MBHM. She was itching to to put the new found knowledge to use.

She listened to the techs that was working on it when she had a question to clarify some point or another from the manuel. It was great being out here in the countryside and the city was fast becoming a distant memory as she spent time learning the finer nuances of her Akiashiro MBHM.

"Ah..there ya are, Miss Sheela!" A familiar voice spoke as a shadow fell across the manuel she was reading.

She looked up to recognize one the Pilot of the smaller Mech that escorted her into the base camp. "Heyas." Giving him a soft smile as she marked the spot in the Manuel and putting it in her pack. "What's up?"

"How about a run with us?" The Pilot spoke, returning the smile.

Sheela nodded as she climbed out of the MBHM onto the scalfolding that surrounded it, next to the pilot. They both climbed down and made their way to several small mechs that was more quicker and agile.

:: Outer City ::

He moved with the flow of people, ever alert to the finer nuances of the life that thrived out here. The distant rumble of another Cutter Machine, conversations, sporadic flare up of some gun battle that quickly died away. Only thing that was missing was the neon signs that littered the Core City. There was a few neon signs here and there, but they were used to attract customers to drinking and pleasure establishments that infrequently dotted the Outer City.

He puased to watch a gang of children run by, screaming and yelling and horseplaying as they weaved through other pedestrians.

He reached out and snagged the closest child, a girl of about 7 or 8. "hold up a minute, little miss." as he recieved a quick kick to the shin from the girl. He still held onto her arm to prevent her from running away. "I just need to ask a few question and you're free to go."

"Itsa gonna cost ya mister!" Resignation filled the girl's eyes as she realized she was caught.

"Oh?" He smiled at the audicity of the girl. So unlike the well mannered children of Corecity. But then, they would be in school or walking docilely next to an adult, "depends on how helpful you are, miss."

"Whatcha want to know, mister? pleasure joint is two blocks that a-way," she pointed to the east.

He laughed softly, fishing out a picture of the Cutter Crew female and showed it to the girl. "Have you seen her? My sister."

The girl looked at the picture. "Nope." Shaking her head, sending her hair flying, and some debri falling free from her tangled mop of hair.

He looked at the girl, accessing her answer and let her go, handing over two .22 bullets to her.

She smiled at the wealth she had recieved. "Thank ya!" Closing her grubby hand around the two bullets and scampering off, "You might want to check "Ole Grumpy!" Yelling over her shoulder as she disappeared into the crowd.

He smiled, hopefully Ole Grumpy would know. He slauntered off, thinking of Grumpy.

Ole Grumpy was a major player out here in the Outercity and held a lot of respect of the locals. Nothing happened out here without him knowing about it.

He should've paid his respects sooner. But sometimes it paid bigger dividends to solo and get your information yourself. Other times, ya just had to go see him.

:: Outercity : Ole Grumpy Enclave ::

It used to be a park where children played, but over the years A warlord rose from the chaos as Innercity fortified itself to protect the rich and those that supported them.

The wall that grew was from the rubble shaped and cut to fit in place with few openings to allow enterance and egress from. Outter side was rough with many projections of crumbling concrete and exposed rebar. Rising up to a hundred feet with crenalation. Complete with roving guards on top to keep the riff-raff from climbing into the compound of ornate buildings, lush gardens and gravel pathways to the various buildings within the walls that circled about the place.

The interior of the thick walls was smooth with stairs rising to the upper walkways where the guards patrolled.

The walkways were of a crushed gravel from the chippings of the rubble that was used as bricks to build the enclave buildings. Off to one side in midst of thick vegetation a soft rumble of the generators that provided power to the complex.

Armed guards patrolled the area and walk ways mingled in with scanty clad females running errands or relaxing in carefully placed gazeboes.

Taking in the surroundings as he made his way towards the main building to pay his respects to Ole Grumpy and entering into the luxurious furnished foyer of the audience chamber that lay beyond ornate crafted doors. He moved over to a stack of boxes near a window, picking up the top most box.

He placed the box on a nearby table and began to disarm himself along with the assorted calibers of loose bullets that was the currency for outter city.

Once that chore was done, he picked up the box, carrying it with him to a window and shoving the box through.

The man on the otherside afixed a tag with a alphanumeric markings onto the box and then handing him another tag with the same markings on it.

Now he waited for his turn to see Ole Grumpy.

:: 22nd Mech Regiment - countryside ::

Sheela followed the other light mech through the tall towering trees that blocked the path they was running on. Sunlight shone through in streamers from the canopy to the ground. Her eyes darting over the scenery and the Hud as she kept up with the other Mech. But it felt way different that her Akiashiro Main Heavy Battle Mech. It felt like it could easy be toppled over with one misplaced step or an errant wind.

Finally after traveling for several hours, they slowed down. Over her screen came a text message.

Move forward till you can see over the top of the ridgeline and stop. If you must transmit, back below the ridgeline and send text to me. Once you can see, start vid recording.

Sheela gave the thumbs up through her viewing port to the other Mech Pilot. She began her advancement through the brush till see could see what lay beyond and activated the vid recording.

The sun shone over the bowl-like valley with no vegetation seen. In the middle was towering spires and domes reaching for the sky. Arching bridges spaned the distance between them several hundred meters off the ground. In between the domes and spires, the ground was covered with a grey film that looked all bubbly with smooth paths going all over the place, criss-crossing each other at random points. some of the paths spiraled up the sides of domes and spires before arching out over space to the next structure.

The whole valley floor was covered with the greylike substance that the spires and domes were made of. Like bees gone wild in making their hives.

Sheela increased magnifaction to get a better view, bringing the conglomeration of structures into better view. She saw the waving horizontal lines ringing each structure, like the way a wasp nest would be like.

She spent several minutes scanning back and forth slowly to get as much details as possible before slipping back below the ridgeline. She didn't know what she was suppose to look for. But recorded everything she wanted to see.

Then they was on their way back to the base at a leisuerly pace, taking a different route.

-= "Now you see why we need a Heavy Mech. What you looking at is a NMX Hive complex." =- Her partner spoke after a while letting what she saw sink in.

-= "I thought they lived underground. That is where the crabs live in the innercity." =- Sheela responded back as they entered the base and parked the light mechs with the others.

Sheela was impressed at the shear size of the NMX Hive. That was almost as big as Innercity. And it looked like they was expanding with new domes being constructed. -= "Are them bridges that span beteen the domes tough enough to support them? They must be pretty light." =-

-= "Those structures are very tough. Need heavy ordinance to penetrate them structures, which our lighter mechs can't carry very far. With your heavy mech can provide the punch we need to open them structures up so rest of us can lob in high explosives." =- He responded and then the coms went dead as he powered down the light mech.

Sheela did the same as she gave thought of having a heavy mech fully armed. She couldn't help but smile as she climbed out of the light mech onto the scafolding that was placed around the light mech to be serviced.

OuterCity: Old Grumpy Enclave

He watched the coming and goings of the serveants going about their chores and assignments. Looking over the ornate carvings of mythical creatures, paintings stolen from museums scince the fall of the city. The bright color schemes of the room began to wear on his patience. Standing and pacing the room, looking at a few new acquistions, he had seen scince his last visit, when he felt a presence next to him.

"What drags you out here this time," A familiar grumpy sounded voice spoke behind and to the left.

"Several things," He spoke still looking at the painting for a few more minutes, then turning to face the Ole Grumpy, himself.

The old man with a wrinkled and wise face, stared at him with bright cunning eyes. "What are these things you are looking for?" Motioning for him to follow him into a secluded alcove that wasn't visible from lobby.

He followed Grumpy into the alcove and sat on the cushioned chair as Grumpy took another one. "A Military grade battle mech. Last seen heading towards the countryside." Making eye contact with Grumpy. "What you know about it?"

Grumpy looked thoughtful as he played with his thinning beard. "It appeared and headed through the city. A lot of people took shots at it. But it didn't return fire. Which is quite odd."

"You know it's point of origin?" Taking a look around the alcove, taking in the decor.

"From the Sky," Grumpy spoke, "In the Quimby Sector of Outercity."

He nodded, thinking about the Mech and the answers he received from Grumpy. "I think I'll take a look about there."

"People are quite clannish and rarely speak to outsiders of their neighborhood." Grumpy spoke softly, leaning back in his seat.

He nodded, "maybe I could get one of your lieutenants to assist me?" Throwing out the offer.

Grumpy nodded, "It could be arranged." Rubbing his finger and thumb together in the usual way for asking for payment for service.

"Two cases of 9 millimeter rounds..." he spoke thoughtfully, "after the mission."

Grumpy looked thoughtfully, "I'll see what I can do. Anything else?"

"Looking for a crusher operator. But she went to ground pretty quickly." giving a wave of dismissal. Knowing that she had successfully eluded the law, unless she returned to Innercity.

Grumpy nodded sagely, "No matter, the Mech is something every gang wants. Good thing you came to me."

Smiling, he stood up. "I'll be waiting for your man." And exited the alcove, moving to recover his weapons and mismatched bullets used as currency in outercity.

Sheela moved through the base of the 22nd Mech Regiment, heading to the hanger where her Main Battle Heavy Mech was getting loaded with ammunition and heavy missiles it able to carry and fire with ease.

Everyone was running around getting ready for the upcoming battle. Transport engines were adding to the onslaught of noice mingled in with yelling of orders.

"Sheela!" An Officer yelled out, getting her attention. "Report to the briefing room!" motioning for her to follow her.

She waved and ran after him to a large tent under a camouflaged netting. She entered and noticed that the room was filled with other mech operators. She looked around as she edged her way deeper into the briefing tent, past other officers and senior non-coms.

The tent fell quiet when an Officer in battle fatigues entered from behind the low platform. He stepped on the platform between two boards with maps of the area. "We finally have a chance to bring the battle to the dreaded Mish-crab's enclave!" He looked around the room, spying Sheela next to the wall, standing as she couldn't find a seat. He began laying out the order of battle and drawing on the map as he laid out his plan of attack on the Mish Enclave.

After a long moments of various officers and Non-coms finished their questions, everyone began to file out to brief their units. Mech operators gave Sheela the thumbs up as they passed her. She fell in with the group and headed out to where the mechs were lined up.

Sheela looked around her and noticed that a lot of the transports were gone and the camp was looking like a ghost town.

She climbed up ladder to her place in the big Mech that was the opening punch against the Enclave.
By the time she was settled in her place, the smaller mechs were forming up in their units and making way for the Main Battle Mech.

Sheela started the big Mech, listening to the various components come alive and the main HUD come alive and another console panel showed all green of the full load of ammunition. She began to move the big Mech through the camp following the smaller Mechs that were assigned to escort her to where she could rain heavy fire onto the Mish Crab Enclave.

OuterCity:

He and the Lieutenant took off from the enclave. They worked their way through the busy, people packed streets.

It was like any city, only difference was majority of the buildings were showing great neglect and battle damage. Ruined vehicles in various stages of decay and being stripped to be removed for good.Rubble from collapse buildings still blocked the streets with passages cleared through the rubble.

After making their way through the city to the Quimby Sector. The lieutenant pointed out the block where the Battlemech fell from the sky, showing the freshly caved in building nearby. They watched the residence from the freshly ruined building evacuate the dead and wounded being treated right on the sidewalk. Personal stuff being piled up and under guard by the residence.

They stayed back from the crowd. He looked around, checking out various building, eying a few that was big enough to hide a Battle Mech of large size. "What are those building over there?" Pointing towards several large buildings in decent shape.

"In the past before the war that fell from the sky, belonged to an old military base. But now used by the Clan Quimby." The Lieutenant spoke. "You wanna go check them out?"

"Yeah, lets..." He spoke and walked away, like anyone lost interest in the salvage of a ruined village, heading to the Quimby Clan Holdings, several blocks away.

"Sophia", the ex-cutter operator, moved about the apartment, taking care of Old Maggie. It was a safe place to hang out till she got used to living out in Outer City. She could hear the yelling and fights faintly through the walls of the residence of the building.

"So, mother. since the chores are done, what now?" Sophia sat on the floor demurely, next to Maggie.

"You will read to me." Maggie smiled at her Sophie. The only daughter that returned to her.

"You have a favorite book?" Sophie got up and moved to the shelf of old books, looking over the titles.

"I'll let you chose." Maggie feeling good and relaxed, enjoying the company of Sophie.

Sophie looked over the books lined up on several shelves. After several minutes, she chose a book and returned to Maggie's side and settled down to read out loud to Maggie. It was nice to be in the little apartment as it wasn't crowded with family getting in the way, nor being disturbed by the children running all over the place, yelling and getting underfoot.

He looked at the building that was showing signs of decay, but still stood firm from the ravishes of time. Making his way around the building with Ole Grumpy's Lieutenant in tow. Ambling along as they act like they was checking out the various merchant booths, while looking over the building for a covert entrance.

There was several entrances to the building, but they was occupied by people sitting on the steps talking, selling stuff, resting and a few of them sleeping. Or were they dead?

"Gonna be a tough nut to crack." Lieutenant spoke softly as they left the area to avoid sticking out after one complete circuit around the building.

"Anyway to get in from below?" He asked as they paused to get something to eat.

"If you want to run into the Mish-Crabs." Lieutenant spoke shuddering slightly.

He laughed, "old wive tails!" Exclaimed, getting dirty looks from those nearby.

Lieutenant scowled. "Listen good mister. It is true. They are still around. They don't come to the surface." Very sincerely with terror in his eyes. "A lot of people out here come missing all the time. We kill them if they are seen."

He listened and watched the actions of the man. He was still skeptic but he needed the lieutenant.

::Countryside: 22 Mech Regiment::

Radio crackled on with callsigns and coded messages flew rapid regularity as the 22nd Mech Unit moved into position. Sheela walked the Big Mech to her assigned spot. A tall hillside with a commanding view of the Mish Bee-hive like complex.

Her heart was racing with excitement at seeing her Big Akiashiro Main Heavy Battle Mech could do fully armed. She planted the bracers and leaned foward in the proper counter balance to firing a salvo of heavy missiles.

Sheela loved operating the Mech's operation. It was smooth and moving 200 tons of machinery and 100 tons of munitions, she felt like an Avenging Diety that ole gramps used to tell the youngsters, waiting to bring forth rightious justice upon the wrong doers.

She watched the smaller mechs line up behind the last ridgeline that hid them from the Mish Hive compound. She didn't envy them as they would the ones assualting the Compound for the main assault. She hoped that she could continue to fire accurately into the fray without hitting her new found friends, teammates, fellow soldiers once they mixed it up.

"Big Bee. Fire when ready!" came the call over her private frequency.

"Salvo 1, launching in ten minutes on my mark." Sheela replied as she set up the firing solution for each of the heavy missiles. "Begin countdown timer...Mark!" as she inputted the last target into the last missile.

She set the selector to autofire salvo, glancing at the time and armed the missiles. Hearing the Missile pod sevros whine as the big shoulder missile pod elevated into position. Onced it fell quiet, She fired the first salvo.

Relays clicked, roaring of 6 heavily missile rockets ignited and burst forth from the tubes in a cloud of flame and smoke clouding her vision as the missile raced outward upon their assigned track to their target.

She was already moving the Big Akiashiro MHBM to the new location to prevent counter battery fire upon her.

The ground heaved and shook from the massive rolling thunder of the impacts of missiles all along the side of the Mish-Crab bee-hive like Enclave as chunks of the hive flew shattered into the air, burning. The Hive riolled in flames, sending plume of smoke skyward.

Rising to her secondary position, another hilltop, where she could see the smaller mechs rushing towards the now ruined Mish-Crab enclave.

The Mish-Crabs were firing at the smaller mechs as the ground around the mechs exploded in clouds of dust.

Sheela aimed her main weapon at the clusters of Mish-Crabs and fired, sending a leathal spray of projectiles into areas where the heavy weapons fire came from. Tearing chunks of burning hive and killing Mish-Crabs by the dozens.

When the smaller mechs got into the range of their weapons, they opened fire adding to the destruction of the hive and Mish-Crabs.

Realizing she had more heavy missiles, she began to program onto targets deeper into the hive enclave. Bracing her Mech once more, let loose the second volley of heavy missiles into the Enclave, busting structures up and setting them on fire. Causing mayhem and destruction on the Mish-Crabs Enclave.

Soon the Mish-Crabs rallied and swarmed the Mechs, dying by the hundreds as they swarmed the mechs. Sheela kept up her deadly attack from the distance, helping out the smaller mechs.

Soon the Smaller Mechs were forced to retreat from the field of battle, leaving behind smoking ruined mechs and dead. Sheela was forced to conserve ammo to for the most good as she covered the Mech's retreat.

A warning buzzer went off in her cockpit and she jumped the big mech as the hilltop she wa standing on erupted in an explosion that would've seriously put her out of commission.

Sheela braced herself for impact and did much better in landing the big Mech. she moved off, listening in on the damage reports that filled the air of her cockpit as she made her way back to the 22nd Mech base for reloads, repair, refueling and new orders.

He walked along in silence with the lieutenant tagging along as he made his way to one of his stash point. He motioned the lieutenant of Grumpy's to wait as he crawled into an opening hidden by an old shot up dumpster.

After careful searching and moving junk about, pulled out the two small cases of 9mm rounds to give to Grumpy as payment. He re-arranged the junk to cover up the remaining stash of bullets of various calibers.

He crawled out and stood up, brushing himself off and passed the two cases over to the lieutenant, "Give my respects to Grumpy," using the crime boss's street name.

The lieutenant nodded as he took the two cases of bullets and disappeared down the alley way. Heading back to the enclave.

Sheela looked around as she brought her mech to a stop in the Hanger, within the scaffolding for it and powered down the beast. She unstrapped from her seat and opened the access hatch to the fresh air and sounds of the busy bay. She stood in the opening and watched the techs scramble up the scaffolding and began to run checks as the munitions were brought to be loaded up.

"Excuse me," A tech spoke to her, waiting for her to move from the Mech's cockpit.

Sheela nodded as she moved from the Mech and began the slow journey to the floor, dodging the busy techs who were servicing her Mech. As she came closer to the floor, she watched the other smaller mechs began to enter the well lit hanger.

She paused and watched them enter, unaware she was counting them. Finally the doors closed to block the dying day as the horizon turned bloody red as the sun hovered on the horizon.

He watched the Lieutenant disappear around the corner and re-entered the hideout. He rearranged stuff and put on several more easily concealed guns about his person. Not that he was worried about the Mish-crabs that the outer city people were of them. It just pays to be prepared for the unexpected. Looking over his hideout, looking thoughtful as it was now exposed to another. Could he trust the Lieutenant to keep his secret or find another one.

Then he just smiled as he moved to a corner and lifted a board. Looking at the prepared device, He kneeled and began arming it. Once that was done, he pulled out a cord and attached it to another device. He turned it on.

He left the hideout, replacing the rusty dumpster to conceal the entrance.

:: Outercity::

He moved back down the ally towards the street in a drunken gate so that the residence of the area would think he was just another drunken fool who gotten lost and wandered into the ally from the other end.

Now all he had to find an entrance to the sewers or a way to enter the building from underneath. He began to explore the area using the cover of the people scurrying about on their own business. He noticed that people were beginning to look up and increased their pace as they looked around for something.

He looked up and noticed the dark rain laden clouds were moving across the sky, blocking out the sun. He frowned as he headed for the nearest door to get out of the rain as it may be the dreaded acid rain that fell.

:: Outer City ::

He moved through the doorway amidst the crush of people that was getting out of the rain that was beginning to fall. He was shoved and pushed deeper into the building. Spying stairs, he made a move for them, leading others that had the same idea, heading to the upper floors of the building.

Feeling relief from the crowd of peoples, he explored his new surrounding. The dank hallway with doors shut with soft sounds of occupancy. He moved quietly, even stopping to listen at each door to get the feel of what's going on.

::Outer City ::

He twirled as he heard a door hinge squeak behind him. He looked up the vacant hallway . Paying close attention to the doors, he spotted one barely open to reveal an eye looking at him through the crack. He stared back, studying what he could see. The chain across the opening, the flower print of the baggy dress ending mid calf and the one big fluffy slipper. Rising his view back up the person barely revealed to take in the curly hair that showed more skin than it concealed.

He nodded and turned away with the feeling of being watched as he continued on his way down the hallway.

It seamed that higher he got in the building, the shabbier it got till he came to the foot of stairs with water trickling down the steps. He felt the cool moisture laden wind. He paused and then headed back down to the lower floor. Ten good floor of living space with about ten apartments to each floor.

He wondered at the size of them as he came to the door with the old lady peeking out at him. He stopped before her and smiled his most winsome smile. “Greeting Miss, may I enterer for a drink. I’m powerfully thirsty.” He waited for a response.

She looked him over and slammed the door shut. He could hear the locks slam into place. He shrugged muttered, “can’t win them all.” As he resumed his journey back to the crowded lower floors.
