Hello to you all!
After a swift search on Google, I came upon this site!
I should tell you a bit about me hmm?!
My name is Oz, I'm a big Fantasy and Science Fiction nut and I love roleplaying in these settings.
My two favourite Sci-Fi franchises are Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000 (and Red Dwarf but I don't think that counts ;D) so yeah, I like it gritty!

I have a question though before I begin.
I'd like to roleplay an alien race but the list of alien races on the Create A Character list don't appeal to me in the slightest (They're a tad... Anime-ish?) so I was wondering what the policy on creating custom Alien races was, if the option is available at all?

*Sigma shoots the universe for being so loud* Don't want to buy from door to door salesmen.

Regardless, welcome to SARP.

Join the Nepleslian Marines. See the galaxy, meet interesting people, kill them in new and explosive ways.

Hi King Aelle. I too am new to this game, so don't ask me anything, because I don't know. All the same, Welcome, Welcome.

Yeah, I found the alien races to be a little anime-ish too, but I really enjoy anime, so I'm cool with it myself. However, based on the difficulties that I have experienced starting a character, I would strongly suggest starting off as something more vanilla, and then exploring your options from there, once you've gotten to know the world, and the world has gotten to know you, too. Also, the chat seems to be a great resource. there is almost always someone on, so jump online, say hi and start asking questions. But again, don't ask me... not yet.

I should specify. Not because it is hard to make a character, but because I apparently picked the hardest race to try to start, as there is pretty much nothing going on for them at the moment.

You did pick one of the most difficult races, Michiko. In fact when they started you had to be a veteran player just to make one.

Anyway! Welcome, King Aelle! Yes, most of the races are anime-ish, which is because much of the site is inspired by Anime, and most of the players have a love for it. However, not everyone is Anime-inspired, most notably the Nepleslians, as they are gritty action dudes derived from G.I. JOES (not a joke) and tend to have the least anime-esque elements in them.

It IS possible to make your own alien race, and actually there is a call for more species diversity in the setting, but before you do, I would suggest, as Michiko said, starting with one of the more Vanilla races (Nepleslians, Yamataians, or go Indie!) and getting to know the setting better. Once you know the setting fairly well, it makes it much easier to craft something that fits in and works with the setting. And also, don't be afraid to ask people, most of us are plenty willing to help. and of course, #stararmy on Sorcery.net's IRC server is your 24 hour source for instant or near instant help, as we have people from all over the world, there's usually someone on.

@King Aelle : What sort of alien race do you have in mind? I'd love to hear your ideas and maybe I could help you make one that suits you. Welcome to Star Army!

Aye, perhaps a Vanilla approach is best. I'll be honest, the sheer quantity of things on the Wiki is staggering and rather overwhelming so I know for certain I am liable to make some major cock-ups to begin with.

And Wes, the alien race I had in mind was one that was tall, slender, very alien looking and very weak but relied heavily on it's latent psychic abilities and it's mastery of technology, very much inspired by creatures such as:

The Tau (Warhammer 40,000)
The Ethereals (XCOM: Enemey Unknown)
The Prophets (Halo Series)

Unfortunately Psychic abilities tend to be frowned upon in the setting. We used to have them years ago, but they were misused and abused, and so they were removed from the setting as much as could possibly be done. It is possible to have psychic-like abilities, done via explainable means, such as the 'telepathy' Nekovalkyrja and yamataians have, which is based upon a 'digital organ' that sends wireless signals not unlike those of a Cell phone.

Hrmmm... interesting...
Perhaps I should focus on their tech or pair them up with another race.
Unsure...
It's a shame when something fundamentally good is ruined by abusing godmoders though -_-

Three thoughts:
  1. Stop! Grammar time! (See its vs. it's.)
  2. We have species with internal wireless communications abilities (sort of like telepathy) but no actual psionics because it's considered magic fantasy rather then sci-fi.
  3. What about these aliens?

The race that I picked are the Iromakahanifeoi-what ever, Iroma.... They have contact empathy. culture is a bit different which is what makes them so hard to create and operate.

Welcome King, love your RP selections as they are the two systems I grew up on (especially Tau). Unfortunately I'm also new here as well. I picked the Nekos and I can tell you from a newb experience that they are easy to get accustomed to as long as you picture, as you said, anime. The grittier setting that makes me think cyberpunk/WH 40k is the Imperial Guard, er, Nepleslian Marines.

I havent seen a Tau like race in my limited experience on here but if you pair up Yamatai Tech with some of their subjugated races (perhaps the Elysians who are even more honorbound, tall and slender), you would be more than able to generate a Tau like experience. They have a similar honor code like the Tau and super tech to imitate most of Tau's abilities.

Here's a way to double check if your race will survive in SARP. If it is randomly walking down a street and suddenly gets attacked by rampaging ID-SOL/Nekovalkyrja/Fyunnen/Mishhu Nightmare, can it possibly defend itself physically? None of the three species you listed as inspiration would be able to survive in a universe filled to the brim with genetically-perfected super soldiers.

After all, the only person who has been beaten by Tau in close combat is @Demonblooded.

There are plenty of normal humans that prosper in the SARPiverse. It's not about physical defense, it's about political shrewdness. Can they get major factions to defend them? Now that's how to succeed in SARP!

That wouldn't happen to be Steampunk garb you're wearing would it? If so, kudos to you sir on it! I happen to enjoy the genre myself. Unless that's just a random avatar off the depths of the internet. In which case I still say the genre is awesome. And welcome!

@King Aelle : What can I do to help you? I'd like to get you in the RP soon. Also, I'm still willing to entertain alien ideas.
