What are Volumetric Displays?

MissingNo

Are they holograms on the level of a Star Trek holodeck (force fields and light projections so real you can't tell it's not real), or "hard light" optical projections (no forcefields, projected from inside the image - like the Heretic's doubles in Halo 2 - or visibly emitted from a source outside of where the image actually appears, like V.I.K.I. in the movie "I, Robot" or holo-projectors in Star Wars)?

I'm sorry for the references to outside shows and terms, but relating this to something I already know is the only way I'm going to get an accurate point of comparison for this.

My assumption's always been holodeck-like displays, but restricted to image panels when outside of Virtual Reality recreation rooms. I think the idea is to make it more like Xenosaga.

That's how I've always written it, and I was never corrected, but that might not be enough.

Unfortunately I have yet to start Xenosaga...but I have seen a couple episodes of the anime.

So, it is a 3-D projection within a short distance of the projector when acting as a console, and a holodeck-solid simulatory device when inside the properly equipped rooms?

Why I am asking is because, if a ship has VDs installed in it's hallways, it might be possible to change the look and tactile feel of the hallways using the displays if it has a holodeck effect. Though, now that I think about it, that would be intensely draining on a ship's energy supply, wouldn't it?

It was just a thought.

You can call up image displays and panels anywhere in Star Army vessels, though. That's why I say it's like Xenosaga; seemingly magic computer panels can come from thin air.

I really like that Yamatai has volumetric computers. Holograms you can interact with is so Minority Report!

What is the limitation of Volumetric Displays? Can they turn the player into anything and everything based around the person shape? So long as the basic dimetions are correct? Can they modify their appearance furhter? Larger/smaller chest hips waist?
