When do rules apply?

Rules apply as a guide for me to decide what is acceptable and what is not. I consider there to be shades of grey in the interpretation since this site does not use bots for its operations, it uses moderators. As I have free will, I have the opportunity to judge on a case-by-case basis.

Does this not mean that the rules are entirely optional? If we can pick and choose which rules to follow on a case by case basis then why have them at all?

Rather, are rules supposed to be followed? or are they only guidelines?

Uso Tasuki, the rules you are interpreting is being taken in such a rigid manner that you defeat your own point of view - and do so in a truly ridiculous manner.

The matter to be discussed are the methods of FTL travel. We have fold, warp and wormhole types. Variants can be conceived within those three sections - Wes merely does not want any new ones to be hatched up for the moment... for reason which were established in the other thread which was actually reserved to this discussion.

Bring your discussion and further posts to that previous topic. You're coming very close to what I consider spamming.

This is something that's covered in any basic high school law class - 'letter of the law' versus 'spirit of the law'.

Sure, the law may say something, and the law should be concrete. However, there are cases in which a strict following of the law is not the best way to go. In this case, a judge would try and come up with a ruling based on what the law intends, rather that what is written down on paper.

For example, someone speeds on the highway and is given a ticket by a police officer. However, this person was driving their wife, currently in labor, to the hospital. Thus, any reasonable judge would rule that the ticket doesn't have to be paid, due to extenuating circumstances; the law's intention was not to delay the driver, but to keep the roads safe

So what we have here is 'letter of the rules' versus 'spirit of the rules', and that's even more important here, because a strict reading of the rules would render basically everyone on the site a rulebreaker.

Oh, man. I'd totally forgotten that selective rule enforcement was an old issue rather than a new one. Always good to be up on your history so you can laugh as everyone repeats it without concern :)

This is actually relevant. Are we supposed to follow the spirit of the law or the letter of the law? I am in favor of following the spirit because the reason for having rules is more important. The attitude lately seems to favor using the letter of the law to find loopholes and get away with breaking rules.

An example would be if someone were to say something like "Person A is an idiot" it's against the rules. However, if you say "Man this site is full of idiots" you may not receive the same punishment or any punishment at all. Both instances are wrong and should be punished equally.
