CPL Ötto Reiter
Several weeks had passed since his removal from the IPG Commandos. The now Corporal had, a difficult time adjusting to the different cybernetics. His eyes were rejecting the new systems. Looking around in the almost medical like room, the sterile smell of alcohol faint inside. The clean white walls reminded him of the ship interiors he was far more used to. One Specialist entered first." Mr.Reiter, we have an exchange student from Yamatai, she will be taking over your diagnostics for your cybernetics. Under our close watch of course." The man's eyes narrowed, before sighing."very well, hurry this along please." The technician nodded quickly making his way out of the room. Ötto looked around to the various tools, terminals and various additional cybernetic parts organized throughout the room. He was no stranger to the tech. But it was certainly out of his element.
Walking down the hall to her next exam Naoko was still trying to get used to the facility. Their technology was different than what she was accustomed to back home. She was excited to be in the field researching for the follow up on her term paper, but she found she spent more time with the tech than she did helping people. She had hoped there would be more contact with people seeing how they had the tech was integrated into their living tissue. This was her first real patient in the week she had been there. Stopping in front of the door she took a deep breath. 'You've got this.' She thought to herself before entering the room. "Hello Mr Reiter. I believe you are having issues with the cybernetic system installed in your…" Naoko's words trailed off as she looked up from the medical data pad in her hands. The device nearly slipped from her grasp.
Seeing the small framed Neko was a refreshing sight. Seeing her uniform brought mixed feelings, but to Ötto She was still quite attractive." I hope I didn't startle you. You have me for a loss, miss?" His words were still direct, apathetic despite his conflicting features. Watching her fumble was slightly entertaining. Though the more he scanned her features and curves. The more this young Neko interested him.
She had not expected to see someone who looked quite like him. Granted everyone here seemed to have features that were sharp in comparison to the Minkan man back home but he was different. "Oh.. Oh no no no. I am fine. I am sorry." She shook her head and took a few steps closer to him. Her grip on the pad was a bit tighter now. The stool positioned next to where he was seemed a bit far away to her in that moment so she stopped directly in front of him. " To my knowledge you believe your eyes are rejecting the new upgrades. Can you explain what makes you think that is the problem?"
Wincing, Öttos vision began to blur, before returning to normal." I was relieved of duty with the IPG, therefore a forfeiture of IPG property was required. Meaning the software is not the original." He sighed looking away for a brief moment. Before looking back to the neko student. "You never did give me your name."
Reaching over she placed her data pad down on the table picking up a thin cylinder light turning it on. "My name is Naoko. This may be uncomfortable for a moment." Leaning forward she looked closely at his eyes. They were a warm brown color. She stared at them for a moment almost lost in them. A few locks of hair falling from where she had tucked them behind her ear. It was hard to examine the hardware threw the flesh in most cases but the light in her hand was meant to reflect at a frequency that allowed her to spot if her assumption is correct or not. But she stood there for a moment unable to move. She smiled a bit as she thought to herself how glad she hadn't eaten since this morning or this could be a bit more awkward than she was making it. Forcing herself to look away for a moment before she lifted the light looking first in one eye then the other.
The soft pink hue in her periwinkle skin could be seen. Attempting to stay still to ensure her examination was thorough. Seeing her soft features. The thought that hadn't danced a cross his mind in long enough he had forgotten what it felt like. There was almost an award tension in the air. Yet for once. Ötto could not follow through. He was simply at a loss for words. Befuddled with the fact that his emotions were getting the best of him at this current time."you...may get this often Naoko, but.. once we have figured this issue out. Will you be busy after?"
Her eyes seemed to travel down watching his mouth as he speaks. "I…" Snap out of it she yells at herself in her head. Blinking a few times realizing she is just standing there staring at him she quickly stood turning back to the table putting the light down after turning it off. Her hand resting on it for a moment. "I think the new software is over powering the battery. The commercial enhancements tend to be bulkier and have a higher power draw than the ones provided threw IPG. I think if we remove some of the software that will fix your problem. The other option is enhancing the battery but thats a more complicated procedure than removing some of the software." Naoko's eyes shifting down to her data pad. This was not very professional, if she keeps it up they may put her back on the tech and not allow her to work with people. "I am off after I finish the paperwork but I have to stop at my quarters to feed Nikkusu…"
"I will have to go with the power adjustment. The software I need for my work. Seeing targets and seeing them well. I take it you have a pet?" His demeanor was still relaxed, the idea of a complicated procedure meaning little in comparisons to the high stress environment he was used to.
"I understand." She lifted her tablet looking over the schedule, her eyes scanning for the soonest she could have the procedure done for him. She wasn't allowed to actually work on any military personnel. She could only assume it was because of where she came from. "It looks like the only opening is tomorrow at 0800. They will have to remove the old battery and put in a replacement. If the software is to painful at the moment I can uninstall it until the issue is fixed." She offered. She wasn't sure their policy on the types of pets she owned so she avoided telling him exactly what Nikkusu was and gave a short reply. "Yes."
"I see, i can manage until then. 0800 will work for me. I have endured worse." He smiled sitting up in the medical chair, now eyeing her curvaceous frame. Yet again surprising himself, not used to feeling such a way."tell me, what got you interested in Cybernetics?"
She began fidgeting with the tools on the table. "Ok i will set that up for you but if you find its too painful come back in and someone here will be able to shut off the software." Naoko looked up from her data pad staring at the wall not daring to turn around or she may just stare at him again. "Well honestly. I was more interested in learning about people and that evolved into wanting to help them. When us Nekos are created we arent just born with a personality or place. We have to find our purpose just like anyone else except we don't have 21 years of experience to guide us like most 3adults. I want to understand why we have to be so different." She took a deep breath and let out a quiet sigh closing her eyes for a moment.
"I believe that to be respectable decision. I have spent most of my life as a soldier, the first, and second Mishu wars. The civil war and now the Kuvexians. I've only understood most through the scope of a rifle. Long range recon patrols. In my line of work, understanding the enemy is more of a relationship of predator and prey." He spoke casually, rather matter of fact about the situation, yet he also seemed genuine with his response. Unsure of how to properly connect. He was out of his element, the feeling of dealing with civilian techs, and the lack of sounds of distant combat was something he was unused to completely.
"I see so that's what i will have to look forward to when I return. Well can't say I expected sunshine and rainbows." Naoko didn't exactly look forward to ending peoples lives but that's what she was made to do. Maybe she could embrace it and not feel like it was a tragedy. Life was short as it was for most people unless they were willing to be backed up like computer programs. She understood the concept of predator and prey she has studied enough about every creature known to know there would likely never be true peace not for everyone. "To bad most Nepleslians still "consider us the enemy." Turnt on her heels data pad in hand holding it out to him. "All i need is a signature and you'll receive a reminder in the morning as well as instruction for what to do when you arrive." She noticed how his shirt lay against his frame, her eyes traveling over him for a moment. If all Nepleslians were built like him yamatai might have a bit of a challenge defeating them if a battle ever occurred. Even while seated he was much bigger than she was. It wouldn't be hard for him to hold her against the wall and…. "Fuck.." She said under her breath before shaking her head trying to free herself from such thoughts what was wrong with her. She should have listened to Kiano back in college, maybe if she has let lose and experienced some of the carnal pleasures available to her she wouldn't be having this issue now. No she never had this problem before so why now? Why him and why couldn't she take her eyes off of him?
"Judging by you being here, you are a science technician? I doubt you will personally see much combat. My profession requires me to dispatch high value targets at long distances. As a sniper i have to be on the frontline. Judging by the softness of your hands, you are soon to be an officer no?" Ötto chuckled, hoping in some awkward way, it would break the odd tension in the room. With a smile, he took the data pad signing off for the procedure. Handing it back to Naoko, keeping his smile.
"I just completed my training and have received my status of science officer. My mother made sure of it. My being here was more of a choice to further my knowledge on Cybernetics. I put in a request to stall my deployment for 4 months to come here but I am scheduled to be back and on a ship toward the war efforts by the end of the year." Naoko looked at her hands. It was true she hadn't seen battle yet but she was going to sooner rather than later. She took the pad from him looking over the data once again before submitting it. Looking up at him she gave him a brief smile. "During war everyone becomes a warrior profession and preferences aside."
"Though to an extent, you are right. Wars are won with the grit, tactical understanding of ones enemy, and the patience to watch as your friends fall around you. Not to get dark..ma'am. i think you will do just fine aboard a ship." He smiled once more. Four months was plenty of time, raising his eyebrow as if to ask himself the question of."for what?"
" I knows there is a high possibility of losing people I care about but what would it say if I didn't give my all to try and prevent that?" She laughed a bit, her question not needing an answer just a point of speculation. "Well you are finished here for today. I will probably be here for another 45 minutes finishing my report. If you intend to wait there is seating in the waiting room." The bridge of her nose started to change a slightly pinker shade of purple causing her to look down at the datapad letting the black tendrils that escaped the band that held her hair up, fall in front of her face. 'Had she gone mad?'
"Forty-five minutes seems well worth the wait. I think I will. And tell me, do you have a vehicle here? No major concern if so." Ötto couldn't help but smile, again against his seemingly better nature. Standing up, his height actually being realized. His hands brushing the hair from her face." I'll see you in forty-five then." Opening the door into the sterile smelling hallway, Ötto began to make his way to the lobby, following exit signs back toward the front of the building. The hallways winding on for a time before finally returning to the waiting room. Confirming his appointment, Ötto sat patiently in the back corner of the waiting room watching the entrance to the back, and the entrance to the building.
"No, I don't have a vehicle here. I walk most places." She looked up at him her face still partially hidden behind her hair. He was much taller than her in fact she only came up to about his chest. If she hugged him right then she would likely be able to hear his heart beating. Her eyes traveled over him taking in every detail. As her gaze fell lower her attention was pulled away before her eyes went to far. She felt the brush of his hand as he moved her hair from her face, her eyes darting back up to look at his brown orbs. She watched the man leave the room the door closing behind him before she slumped into the chair at the desk. Letting out a huff of air as if she had been holding her breath till that moment. This was nothing like her, she was always calm and collected no matter the situation. Was this a bad idea or maybe the best. She quickly got to work.
