RP: Cirrus Station [Episode 8] That Sinking Feeling

Tweak listened but didn't say anything, her eyes closed behind the polarized visor of her helmet while she reviewed the data from the original encounter with the Uniques.

They are definitely better-geared than we are, she mused, wishing that she had taken active scans of the Unique team's armor when she had the chance. At least one of us has a large-caliber weapon, though. And, again, this is a conference. That limits their means of attacking directly. Tweak went deeper into her saved memories, allowing the conversations outside her suit fading to a background buzz while still keeping tabs on it.

Then the neko's eyes snapped open. "Oh no," she whispered. If they wanted to damage Cassefin's reputation and the station's security, that would be one way to do it... But should she report it?

Blake frowned and drew his variable weapon. He knew how to use it, but never had. Seeing it now in the new light, it seemed completely useless to him. He would have tossed it to the floor, were it not for the presence of its designer less than a meter from his very spot. He looked up at Claire, and then over to Cassefin. With a muffled sound, he crossed his arms over his chest. He might have even cried if he were younger.

"Miss Winters, mam." he began in low tones, not even looking up to see if she were paying attention, "I'm truly sorry for offending you. I know that you're probably not going to like me very much, because I don't filter myself, but let me say that I respect and look up to you because you've been serving longer than I have, even if we are the same rank; so I will defer orders from you if the two of us are ever the highest ranking Security Officers around."

By the time he had made his piece to Claire, his voice was growing back to a more suitable volume for social interaction. He used this to next speak to Kokuten, "Captain, I would like to claim responsibility for the outbreak of hostilities within the squad just now. It may seem like a bit of a kiss-ass thing to do, but I'm certain everyone will feel better if you hold me accountable. After all, This is my first special assignment with the squad. I would like to prove that I'm not a liability.

Kokuten sat back down and leaned his head back on the seat. He closed his eyes and rested himself, though, this time it felt something like he had felt riding the shuttles between battlefields. A twinge of anxiety sat in his stomach along with that feeling of S.S.D.D. He shifted a moment, trying to get comfortable, and also trying not to elbow the Freespacer next to him by accident.

The Captain sighed, but didn't move to acknowledge the man.

"Don't let it weigh on you, Mr. Morris. Just do not speak of it again, as I ordered." He responded to him in a refreshing and reassuring tone, seemingly not wanting the man to worry about it.

"If you all are done with your bickering," Cassefin chimed in, her eyes closed as she sat into her seat. "We are approaching atmosphere over the dig site. When we land, I want you all ready to go. Helmets on and visors down. I don't want you all embarrassing me once we're there."

---

A short while after that, the shuttle announced their arrival in a short, ringing chime followed by a small bit of turbulence. As there were no windows or view ports of any kind on the shuttle, it was difficult to tell where they were exactly until they were finally exiting the shuttle itself. Stepping out onto the landing platform would first provide the team with a demonstration on Gold Harbor's noticeably humid climate. Most of the distance across any horizon was populated with little more than dusty badlands, the golden brown expanse shining in the high-noon sunlight.

Before the vast expanse, however, the Cirrus Station personnel would first be presented with a grand view of the Sinkstrip from their elevated position on one of the many shuttle landing pads. The area was essentially a enormous, cavernous natural sinkhole, formed in earlier times on the planet and now left high and dry, with no discernible bottom in sight as Squad 35 viewed the depths. The area around and along the walls of the natural sinkhole was thick with Nepleslian-made catwalks, machinery and mechanisms for the large-scale mining operation. Most of the larger buildings were built along the safer edges of the Sinkstrip, but there were a couple complexes farther down into the cavernous expanse, built for one purpose or another.

Their shuttle pad itself was a partitioned area of a larger spaceport, which was very, very busy from the looks of it. Other transport shuttles and larger starships were both landing and taking off, cargo transports loading and unloading materials while small shuttles (kept under close watch by some local law enforcement) dropped off Nepleslian VIPs, no doubt there for the very Eco-Eco Summit that Cassefin and Purina were heading to.

As the two Cirrus Administrators and their entourage exited the shuttle, a man in professional attire approached them, a humble smile across his face. He was the sort payed to greet and to direct. Behind him stood five figures that many of the CSS members would instantly recognize. Clad in lithe, lustrous and functional full-body armor worn under stylish designer clothing, all of them definitely female, holding weapons to match the sleek, ergonomic style... the Vinross Yu-Cranker Uniques. The personal security force for Vinross Yu-Cranker Materials, much like the CSS were to the Cirrus Research Station. As the Cirrus Station personnel approached, the Uniques turned their attention towards them, their faces obscured by the blank, chromed faceplates, their heeled, armors boots clacking harshly against the metal platform.

---

"Welcome to the Sinkstrip, Miss Montreal, Miss Popjoy," the man said, offering her and Purina both a short, professional handshake. "I'm sorry that our hosts for the evening couldn't meet with you personally, but they have been very busy organizing the meeting. I'm just here to greet you, unfortunately, but our fine security personnel here will be leading you to the facility where the Summit will be held. There will be a complementary banquet after the meeting, and tours of the facility as well if you're interested."

Off to the side, the Uniques all turned to one another, their heads nodding and making motions as though they were talking... most likely communicating privately through their headsets. A couple of theirs shoulders began to heave up and down momentarily... laughter, most likely. After a moment, one of the Uniques approached the Cirrus crew while the well-dressed doorman went on to wait for another shuttle coming in on fast approach.

From behind the faceless plate, a female voice spoke through an external speaker near the jaw. "I'll take ya'll to the conference room. Common," the Unique made a simple motion for them to follow.

Dammit... Kokuten thought as he straightened up in his chair. The mention of putting helmets on sickened him intensely, due to the fact that his smelled like a hammered jock-strap. The Doctor looked down at the headgear and immediately got an idea. He reached for one of the darts in his small pack and opened up one end, pouring a liquid into the container of the helmet. The certain painkiller he was doping the inside of his helmet with, was a strong smelling drug, which his nose gained immunity to years ago. With that done, he gave the inside a quick rub down, smearing the medicine around, over-riding the smell that already occupied it. That done, he took a quick sniff of the inside.

Ah... It'll have to do... Kokuten grunted, the smell of the liquid penetrating his nose with what little smell was left over from before. He put the helmet on and left the visor cracked open, his mouth the only thing visible. This way, the smell could vent out as he moved around, hopefully allowing the Doctor to breath easier.

As he stepped out of the shuttle behind the Administrators, Kokuten took a look around the area, admiring it's size. He had been to Fortuna a time or two before, but had never seen this place.

More examples of Nepleslian Industry... The Doctor's glowing visor looked back towards his squad, waiting for them to exit. Though, when he turned around, he froze, spotting the Unique's standing behind their greeter. Kokuten summoned up some self-control, as the small thunder-palm generator started to buzz in his shoulder, and the glow behind the polarized mask turned a slight towards red.

Now he was sure of it, he felt like a Marine again. He was in a place where he was on edge, and an enemy he could clearly see. The only difference being that it was an enemy he couldn't fight. It was a new level in a test of his patience as he viewed the Uniques on par with the Reds, and despite his pacifistic ideals, he wanted to make them pay for what they did. It made him sick, because the thought of revenge made him feel selfish as well. With a deep breath, allowing some of the painkillers aroma to fill the area, he followed their escorts, gesturing his fellow squad-mates to do the same.

Blake followed Kokuten at an easy pace. His eyes, however, were transfixed by the Uniques. Their clothes, so elegant, and their weapons equally so. Not a single one of them didn't have a beautiful body and it was apparent thanks to the close-fitting body armor they wore. And yet, at the same time; their helmets render them faceless, making them ugly and anything but 'Uniques'.

Blake covertly clicked the safety off of his HHG. He looked to Kokuten and whispered along the radio waves, "Captain, is this how many there were before, or are there more of them? I am wondering to myself if we can handle them."

Tweak kept her helmet facing forward as she left the shuttle, walking beside and slightly behind Kokuten, her weapon by her side but still safety-locked. It wasn't going to be useful anyway, so it didn't matter whether she could fire it or not, and it was best to prevent accidents. Everyone was on edge anyway.

The 'Spacer neko heard the click of Blake's safety catch and dropped back until she was behind him to check his weapon, then put a hand on his shoulder. "Safety that weapon, Morris. They would be fools to attack us just for being here, let's not give them any excuses," she whispered to him over the radio. "We are at a keen disadvantage here, so let's focus on being as little of a threat as possible, okay?" She tried to smile, despite the polarized visor hiding it, waiting for him to follow her advice. Meanwhile, she sent a message to Kokuten:

"Do you think the Uniques can listen in on our chatter?"

Blake begrudgingly returned his pistol to the safety 'on' position without a word. He swallowed his protests as Tweak approached Kokuten for multiple reasons.

The first being that he did not want to start another ruckus. The second being that he didn't want to upset yet another one of the Squad's female members with his rash nature. And the final was both the most powerful and simple reason of all: Someone told him to do it. In most situations that was all Blake needed. In this situation, he wished there was something more than 'follow me and don't look on guard' for him to do...

The diminutive neko patted Blake's shoulder as she heard the safety click back on.

"Forget what everyone's told you about them. If we are attacked, we will fight back. But, until then, we are bodyguards. Here for show and little more." Tweak nodded at her teammate and let her hand fall back to her rifle. "All we can do right now is relax and be alert. This team needs more lerts, right?" she quipped, then sped up her pace.

Returning to her self-assigned place at Kokuten's side, Tweak glanced up at him before examining this place they had arrived at. Too many sniping points to count, abundant cover, and a yawning pit that would take anything tossed into it. Surviving that will be a trick, she mused, her TacOp system giving her the chasm's measurements and various readings as well as fatal trajectory limits at which one would have to be thrown to have no chance to grab onto anything before falling to their death.

Probably best not to think about that right now.

To distract herself, Tweak began a mental frequency-scan, as curious to see whether she could receive and decrypt the Uniques' chatter as she was to know if they were listening in on the Cirrus team's radios.

Claire's distance to Cassefin did not change from the shuttle down onto the landing platform, staying close to her administrator but not quite in her personal space. Blake, Tweak, and Kokuten's chatter amongst themselves got no response from the Geshrin, and bizarrely enough, neither did the Unique's predictable appearance. She stood absolutely still until Cassefin moved, staying in step with the scientist and little more. However, her grip on her weapon was noteably a little loose.

Behind the face plate of her helmet though, no one could see what the redheaded woman was thinking, and her lack of body language and speech didn't give many clues. She was perhaps the quietest one of all.

"Captain, is this how many there were before, or are there more of them? I am wondering to myself if we can handle them."

Kokuten opened up a channel to Blake as he walked, keeping his face forward, looking as if he was just casually checking in through the radio.

"Mister Morris, this will be the last time I tell you, drop all mention of that subject." replied the Captain, with what sounded like a very tiny bit of agitation in his voice. He had already said it twice, and at time like this, he didn't feel like repeating himself. "Act natural in this situation, as if you knew nothing about them."

He shifted the weight of his rifle in his hands, getting a better feel for it. As he did, he began to wonder whether or not mentioning the truth behind this event was any sort of a good idea.

"Do you think the Uniques can listen in on our chatter?"

"There is the likelihood of that situation, however, with as silly and malformed as we look in this armor, I'm sure they don't perceive us as much of a threat. If they can?" Kokuten started on a private wavelength to Tweak, still looking forward as he walked, but then looked back at Blake for a short moment, before looking forward. "Then they already know who we are. So at any rate, it won't matter what we say to each other now with the likelihood of our cover exposed."

It made him feel uncomfortable to the fact of how everyone was uneasy. If he could, he'd try to loosen up the atmosphere, but as the Captain, it was likely good for the situation for these guys to stay on their toes.

Method managed to wedge her ill-fitting helmet on her head - whoever it actually belonged to (she hadn't looked at the name before inking it out) had a smaller head than she did. At least she didn't have hair to worry about. She flicked the visor down over her face, not wanting anyone to see her eyes darting curiously around - she was curious about the Uniques, but everyone else seemed unreasonably terrified.

She followed the leader, occasionally scratching her belly with her claw, gun still slung over her back. Not that it would have helped anyway.

Stovaa made sure he was near the front, to the outside of Purina and a few steps behind her, hoping that his sheer bulk would be an imposing sight for the Uniques as well as any other security personnel who may be present. He did an good job of putting this job first and foremost, being a bodyguard. First rule of being a good bodyguard is that appearance is everything. Confrontations ending before they begin is the ideal situation for anyone that is being guarded. Being as imposing, immaculate and professional as possible is key to this tenet.

He opened a channel to the rest of his team. "Place sure looks homely. If you eyeball any other VIPs floating about, take note. They'll probably be in suits and trying to look important and it'd be useful if we knew who was here."

For a good length of the walk things were relatively wordless. The distance to what appeared to be the nearest large building led them through several other landing pads, the hustle of the area creating a thick cloud of noise. The more observant of the crew would notice more than a few of the Uniques in the area tossing the moving group a wayward glance... of course, the Uniques were giving nearly everyone on the landing pads a scrutinizing eye. There were, after all, plenty of important individuals out and about around them.

All of Tweak's prying led to disappointing results, only receiving static and garbled noise. If there were any communications going, they were encoded and worthless without proper encryption methods.

As the group neared their destined building, the single Unique leading them came to a sudden halt. The Vinross Yu-Cranker security woman, her silvery suit adorned with a curvaceous frilled purple camisole, quickly shook her head from side to side, finally bringing it forward harshly, her entire upper body following suite. She stood there froze in that position for a moment, wordless behind the reflective faceplate. Suddenly, the Unique stamped her heeled foot onto the platform asphalt, faded sounds echoing out from her enclosed helmet. Tucking her weapon underneath her shoulder, the Unique moved her hands up to the back of her helmet and pressing against the joint area between the neck and head. A short hiss of compressed air, and the continuing muffled sounds beneath the Unique armor suddenly became more clear.

"-fer fucks sake gawd-DAMMIT!" a slightly rough but decidedly feminine voice erupted from the Unique as she pulled of her helmet, holding the opening in front of her to view the inside. The Cirrus team, from their position behind her, could only make out a simple tied bun of silvery hair. The Unique gazed intently into the opening of her helmet for a moment before before holding it aloft in one and and sticking her armored free hand into the helmet, fidgeting her hand inside for a moment before holding it up again...

"Aww jeeez..." the Unique whispered to herself, her efforts apparently fruitless. With a sigh, the Unique turned on her heel back to her group. Without the helmet, the woman, a Geshrin from the looks of it, stood no more than 5 feet. She was around her mid twenties and by all accounts fairly plain in appearance, with thin, soft features and brown skin in sharp contrast with her silvery hair. Weapon tucked under her arm, soiled helmet in her other, the Unique gave her group a stare.

"... any a' ya'll got like a... 'hankah... hankahchif'? Or like a rag...?"

Kokuten tilted his head as he saw the Unique sneeze into her helmet, at least, that's what it looked like. He looked back at his squad mates, and rubbed the back of his helmet. Despite the utter dislike he felt for the company, he couldn't resist his natural reactions to assist someone. He reached into the small dart-container that served as ammo for his casting weapon, and pulled out a dart filled with a rather vicious-looking, dark liquid.

"Velserine is known to have properties that can dissolve mucous, you could pour this on it, and it would burn it away. However, I would have to recommend you not breath in any of the fumes unless you feel like taking a time-out every minute or so for the next few hours." explained the Doctor, nonchalantly swirling the poison inside the projectile.

"Think I got somethin' right here, actually." Noboru reached into the backpack of his CSS suit and, from one of the compartments, pulled a relatively-unsoiled brown cloth. It was recognizeable as having come from a NMR packet, although the contents were otherwise discernible.

The disguised Squad 35 guardsman approached the Geshrin and held out his hand, releasing the cloth into the Unique's outstretched palm. "An' the Doc's got his stuff too, if'n you need it." Then the officer stomped back to his place in the formation.

The cutoff syllables and odd inflection were part of something, that was for sure. Perhaps Noboru didn't trust the disguise's aesthetic changes enough.

The Unique perked her silver-lined brow at Kokuten's offer, eyeballing the small liquid container skeptically before accepting Noboru's offering. "Uhh...thanks anyway bub," she said graciously as she took the cloth and attempted to sloppily clean the inside of her helmet. For one reason or another, this also seemed to not work as well as she would have hoped, grimacing as she gazed inside the helmet. "Gawd-damn humidahty... well 'ey, nevahmind," the Unique declared, tossing Noboru back the piece of cloth before grasping her helmet by the lip and repositioning her weapon back into her other hand.

"Sahrry for th' delay folks, an' welcome to th' Sinkstrip," the Unique opened her arms in an acted welcoming gesture, cracking a smile with surprisingly white teeth. "Th' name's Nell, I'm yah lovely atten'ant for th' day," the woman said in a very matter of fact tone. Cassefin stepped forward immediately, making sure that everyone else kept silent as she spoke for the group. "I am Cassefin Montreal, this is Purina Popjoy, and these are my Cirrus Station attendants, Squad 101. You are taking us to the conference area, correct?" The Administrator asked impatiently.

Nell nodded once, seeing that her friendly gestures were not welcome. "Yeeh, it's ahhh... just up ahead," she spoke, continuing onward towards the building in front of them. Upon entering the set of doors, the team entered what appeared to be a sort of security checkpoint. There were Uniques everywhere, manning large security scanners and overseeing the procedures. Although from the looks of the place, and the presence of large moving machinery and conveyor belts, one would deduce that usually this area was used to check incoming and outgoing cargo. One side of the room was apparently being devoted entirely to managing the arrivals for the Eco-Eco Summit, however, and had a small line forming. The Uniques behind the tables in this line were having the individual men and women quickly step through a simple frame which, apparently, gave the Uniques a good representation of just what the individual was carrying on his or her person.

In the back of the room, beyond the checkpoint, were a series of elevators, some industrial sized, others smaller and more for moving personnel rather than materials. Upon reaching the head of the line, Nell turned back to the Cirrus group and shouldered her weapon. "Aight, we're gonna havta ask youse guys t' leave all ya weapon's an' junk up here at th' front. Ya can pick 'em back up when ya'll are leavin'," Nell paused and looked at the crew, to make sure they understood. "Standard pr'cedures an' all."

Kokuten nodded, not wanting to stir up anything by refusing. He also figured that if any other squad members felt like refusing, he'd be a good way to influence them to comply. He set down his CSS Rifle, butt-first of the floor, and leaned it up against his leg as he fiddled with the holster for his dart gun. For a second it gave him some difficulty, as he had forgotten how tightly he had put around his armor plates. Eventually, though, the holstered weapon sagged from his hips. With that done, he picked up his CSS Rifle and Dart Gun and set them down for storage.

However, it seemed the Doctor was intent on keeping hold of his Hypolathe. He had strong views on the difference between weapons and medical equipment, even if he did know how to kill someone with it. Unlike an old friend of his, who cared little if she fought with scalpels or knives, he believed there could be no harmful intent behind a simple hypolathe, other than disabling potential threats non-violently.

Method unstrapped her weapon from her back and simply carelessly dropped it on the ground - she didn't have much affection for it. I can build something better than you in a cave, with a box of scraps, she thought derisively, then felt a bit guilty. As if trying to make up for her cruelty, she bent down and straightened the variable gun, adjusting it to lay side-by-side with Kokuten's.

Blake hesitated at first, but followed Kokuten's example. He placed his variable weapon on the table easily, and the HHG followed, slowly at first. It was not as easy to let his beloved beefy pistol go for the moment. He was quick to remind himself, however that he had received training in hand-to-hand combat when necessary. He also reminded himself that the potential enemy was made up of beautiful women with peculiar accents.
