Hello I am Cmd_Jackson (aka Cmd or Jack),

After 1 year and 6 months on a play-by-post role-play forum, I finally looked back at my posts and realized... I was really bad at Play-By-Post Role-play. So I began my journey across the vast expanse known to some as life and others as the internet and after learning much about writing (from wiki and school) I returned to the forum to find it in a state of inactivity.

And in midst of my attempts to think of an interesting premise for a new thread I noticed an advertisement for this website.

And here I am.

This Forum looks like it is on a completely different level than what I am used to. I am currently reading old threads and character profiles trying to understand how to make them. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Star Army! I'm Wes, the site founder/webmaster. It's good to meet you!

I was a terrible roleplayer once, too. Especially when I was around 16.

I'm going to quote @Floodwaters who wrote this welcome that covers the essentials:

Greetings and welcome!

To get you started, have a look at the New Player's Guide to get a brief overview of the major factions and how the site works. The SARPiverse is enormous, so spend some time browsing the wiki (which can be reached via a link in the bar on the top of this page). There is a lot of information on there, so don't feel like you have to know it all, and feel free to ask as many questions as you need to! I don't think anyone here is an expert on everything, but between all of the active players, somebody is bound to have the answers you're looking for.

There is also a list of active plots that you can choose from to cut your teeth on. In order to get better acquainted with the setting, I would strongly recommend that you look into joining one of the long-running, established plots. Unfortunately, it seems that Nepleslian plots are lacking currently, and the ones that are running are moving at a relatively slow pace, so while you do have that option if Nepleslia is more attractive to you, Yamataian plots are far more numerous.

There are also a number of independent plots running if you prefer to play a civilian, mercenary, corporate employee, or freelancer-type character that is not part of any major faction military.

Alternatively, you can go to the Open Roleplaying forum and get right to RPing, since getting prior approval for your character is not required there. It is, however, considered good etiquette to talk to the original poster of a thread before jumping in. That is, of course, unless you prefer to start your own and try to attract other players to RP with you there.

Whatever your tastes, the best thing you can do right now is take your time absorbing as much information as you can until you're comfortable enough with a specific area of the universe you're most interested in to get started there, and never stop referring to the wiki. I should point out that there is currently a big push to get some less detailed areas of the universe better fleshed out, so if you see anything that looks out of date or isn't clear to you, speak up! We can get it fixed easily, given that the right people get involved, or at least help you better understand it.

Don't be shy with your questions, and happy RPing!

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you becoming a regular around here.

To make threads in Open RP, you can just post them and that's all it takes. I'd suggest an interest check in the RP planning/OOC forum first, though.

Welcome!

Since Wes shamelessly quoted one of my earlier welcomes, I won't bore you with repeating any of it. ;) And I was awful at one time too, everyone has to start someplace. The fact that you recognize your shortcomings does give you a lot more credit than you realize, however. Being aware that you need to improve, and especially taking the initiative to improve, are signs that you have great potential that can be realized with a little elbow grease. Conversely, many times, people who think that they're really good at something really aren't, and lack the foresight and knowledge to realize that they're... well, bad. LOL

Let me know if I can be of any help!

I've been reading through the wiki and that has lead me to some of the plot ship threads (YSS Miharu). Are there any other ones that I should try to read?

Unless you read fast, don't worry too much about reading old plots. The Miharu alone went for close to 5 years, all told, if I recall correctly, and there is a LOT of stuff to read for the others as well.
