Eucharis emerged from hyperspace shimmering like a teal sunset on a stormy ocean, with her furiously blazing main cannon glowing brighter than the sun. Starling, Aurora, and Nadeshiko arranged themselves in a triangular pattern behind the Eucharis, while in front of the squadron lay the dark and fire-speckled fields of hell.

Crisscrossing energy beams and explosions filled the sky so much that the stars beyond were invisible. The main viewer quickly filled with labels of hundreds of thousands of starships and illuminated dots for millions of fighter craft, and on the side Charisma provided a bar filled with fast-moving, filtered text traffic from Star Army forces...and the reports looked bad.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

The event which unfolded in front of her was totally different from the virtual simulations as the Eucharis exited hyperspace. So many ships were deployed, so So many weapons were fired, so many lives...lost.

"Main Cannon charged and ready to fire. Shields up and Aether pods ready to be deployed. Taisa, your orders?"

She gritted her teeth as she ran through the data... awaiting the officers on their next course of action.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

"Things are getting worse! It looks like the 4th can't send a full contingent. Their hands are tied at Spirit City!" The upgraded Irim they had were being used to as much of the border as possible to stop potential threats from filtering past, allowing the Eucharis through shortly before they engaged the interdiction systems. "They indicate they have a contingent 15 minutes out."

Misaki stood by with her MINDY helmet under one arm, relaying adjustments to the Squadron when Hanako issued another fire order. Covering the extra bits of information that seemed tactically or strategically needed.

That sick beauty. I've missed it... She thought with a pang of guilt as a bit of heat flushed through her body. Help them, to the last.

She started to identify the enemy targets she calculated they could hit, and dissipate. Especially clumps, and ships with exposed flanks. Smattering them with target flashes for Hanako to work with. "Starling, Starling, incoming at..."

"I suggest we exploit the nearest weak-link in their formation, give the others something to unwind. If not: create one." The blue-haired Chusa took note of the clocked speeds of the ships coming through on scans, and overlaid several paths for the squadron, with a bit wild formations (always make the enemy guess) and maximum possible damage output.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Ramiro looked in awe at the battle scene. There was an unimaginable number of ships out of Nataria. After staring at the battle for a few seconds his thought came back to him and he quickly pulled up all of the ships main components on a side bar so that he could monitor damage. He then started scanning through estimated damage on friendly ships so that way they would know who is in trouble or may require assistance.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Battlefield: Nataria.

Chaos spread in front of the Eucharis.

Orbiting around Nataria, two large fleets had joined in combat. Aether twinkled, destroying ship after ship after ship, leaving the shattered remnants floating through space. It was in this regard a fairly regular battlefield. However, there were several irregular things about it. The most prominant would become rather glaring, if one were to scrutinize the visuals received from combat a little more closely, with a sharper eye.

There were thousands of Yamataian ships, fighting thousands of Yamataian ships.

A cursory scan of the debris field that now hung like a small asteroid field around the planet of Nataria would reveal a primary composition of Durandium and Yamataium: Very few of the enemy ships had met their end at the hands of Yamatai. The chaos in front of the Eucharis actually looked like civil war.

The warnings from Taisho Yui had been dire indeed - the Mishhu were using Yamatai's own legions against them. Not only was there visual chaos, without truly knowing which ships were which, it would be difficult to determine who to attack until it was too late. Most of the ships fighting had met their end, blindsided from one side or another, while engaging a definite enemy. It wasn't the enemy they could tell was an enemy. It was the ones they couldn't.

Most of the actual NMX battleships, groups, and squadrons were scattered in loose formations around the perimeter of the planet, sustaining Anti-FTL fields, and running scans, watching the battle from afar without truly engaging themselves.

The Eucharis had entered the battle area outside one of these perimeters.

Very quickly, surprisingly quickly in fact, they were noticed by one of these perimeter groups. Rather than soliciting attention from the massive green and black hulled enemy vessels, several smaller vessels painted white with Yamatai's rising sun broke off from strafing the planetary defenses and veered directly into the course of the Eucharis and its battlegroup.

They looked like Sakura-class gunships.

There were four of them.

Even as they aligned into an attack pattern, a transmission came through.

From the YSS Salvior, Captain Mizutani-Shosa, to the YSS Eucharis and Crew

Blood was splattered on the walls.

The officer that stared at the camera looked like a corpse. She was perforated in a half a dozen places, her uniform ripped and torn beyond recognition save for a few scraps of white that still clung like some perverse, ragged flag over her right shoulder. Her hands and arms were covered with blood up to the elbows, and it dripped off of her fingers slowly, already drying.

In the background, the lights of a regular bridge illuminated the carnage.

She had killed her own bridge crew.

Her gaze was lifeless, her head held limply and to one side, but her lips moved well enough for the purposes of addressing those aboard the Eucharis.

"THERE IS WAY THAT IS EASY," she growled, ."AND THERE IS WAY THAT IS HARD. LIKE WAY THAT IS HARD, BUT IS TOLD TO GIVE CHOICE."

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Immediately when the transmission came through Ramiro sent it up on the main screen. He watched intently and when it became apparent she had killed her crew, his hand instinctively jumped to his side arm, to make sure it was there. As the transmission ended he looked around the bridge, "Uhm, I'm going to assume that is not good, not normal, and probably going to try and kill us." Ramiro quick computed the estimated damage and transferred it to the main screens. "Taisa, estimated damage of the possibly hostile ships."

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Hanako stared at the carnage for a moment.

"Ramiro, hit them with the main cannon and anti-starship guns. We should be able to dispatch this squadron fairly quickly if we hit them first," Hanako ordered. "After that, we need to get into the mess. Blueberry, jam enemy communications and use the volumetric system to confused their targeting. Hamada, come up with a boarding team. I need you to get on board one of the mothballed ships, get to the computer, and figure out what security key they are using so I can interface with the dormant fleet."

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Nika was already on to it as she carefully watched the range between the ships shortened. Once they got into range, the neko fired the main cannon, followed by anti-starship guns and missles as the fleet thrusted forward.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

I wish she didn't have to. Oh well. Misaki thought, she had almost played with her holograms to make it seem like she was infected too, but in the end, Hanako did what she would have: blasted them.

"Has a team been assigned to damage control already?" The Chusa asked. They were going to take damage, she felt it aching from the inside out. She kept her eyes on the reports of damage, issuing a silent prayer to her sisters as they were freed of the torment of the Mishhu control.

"All hands. We've made contact with the enemy. Most are infected friendlies. For the next dawn, don't let them down!" As she glanced back up at the display, Misaki kept herself connected with Charisma through her encrypted channels, to keep the status of the squadron, fleet, and the Eucharis as second nature to help aid the swath of destruction they were going to carve to reach their goals.

"Do you also surmise their main control is coming from those ships, Hanako Taisa?"

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

"If you can figure out which one, I'd certainly like to put the aether to her," Hanako replied as the Sakura Gunships were demolished by the overlapping fields of Second Squadron's aether shock cannons, tuning them into haphazardly spinning flaming hulks.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Nika silently prayed for the souls of the recently departed as the fleet mowed through the 'infected' gunships.

"Main cannon charging up again Taisa. It should be ready when the fleet gets into the range of the NMX fleet." She announced.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

"Blueberry, try to find which ship is carrying their command capabilities. Start with finding which is sending out the most traffic to the infected vessels." While the ships broke in beautiful horror, Misaki hopped up behind the former sprite, at her station and drove up priority in her link to the Eucharis so she could help her with the task.

"Prioritize targets by the volume and likelihood on sensor feedback that it's the controlling, or lead ship. If they're in disarray long enough we can salvage this." The Chusa nodded, she was sure the infection would still lead them to killing, but that they were getting proper commands from somewhere, or wouldn't have been so successful against their sisters after the shock of surprise had passed.

Misaki gravely hoped that was it.

"Identify what that is attached to their hulls, also. I want to make sure it's not some sort of new weapon, or infection delivery agent....or breaching pods." Any of those could spell complications.

"2nd Squadron, this is Kurusu Chusa. Increase your pod fire screen by augmenting those that have lost their ships." Even if the ships had been enemy, they were designed to protect other Star Army ships in the event their own was destroyed.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

On the Eucharis...

...the Taii adjusted her helmet beneath her arm, lingering a few extra seconds more than she needed to on the bridge. The scene before her was difficult to say the least. She finally tore her eyes away and stalked back down to the armor bay to prepare herself, and her landing party.

She couldn't take an engineer. Shizu wouldn't dare leave the ship without its engineers in a time like this. Damage control teams would be completely necessary in a situation like this. So who was available?

Sune-hei, she sent, Report to the armor bay, you're my medic this time. Yamamoto-Heisho, Pineapple-Heisho, report to the armor bay and prepare for combat. Taisa-san, if you can spare anyone from the bridge who feels confident with an energy rifle, I need a fifth.

Shizu put on her helmet and slung the rifle off of her shoulder.

She had hoped to be put in mission operations. She had expected to sneak around Yamataian provinces, searching for dissent and weeding out threats to the Empire from the interior. She had received training in special operations, to that extent. They could kick down doors, use tonfa like professionals, and infiltrate even the most complex of security systems.

But standing in as the leader of a group of ad-hoc space marines?

This was going to be a ride.

Orbiting Nataria...

...there were other squadrons pulling away from the mess, following what looked like an organized strafing pattern. More Aether energy weapons were being brought to bear. The hulls of the oncoming ships were so crawling with turrent pods that their make and model could hardly be distinguished visually.

The sensors would show them as three Ayame-class, and an Irim-class. Off in the distance, more ships of varied makes and models were coming through.

Scans would show quite clearly that the pods were hollow, and affixed firmly and almost irremovably to the hulls of the ships in question. As to finding signals from the NMX ships, most of the communications were already scrambled due to the Eucharis's own efforts, and a peculair gravimetric distortion surrounding them.

Still, several communications were bouncing to and from the enemy ships.

...SHIP IS STILL...

...HU HU HU, THEY...

...IS A HARD, BUT IS...

...WHY NOT, IS ANGRY, WISHES FIGHT!

They were mostly just orders running up and down the chain. Strangely enough, the brain slaves at the hearts of most of the enemy power armors were also trading useless pre-battle banter. They seemed uncomfortable for some reason.

But those pods had to have breeched the hulls. There was hardly any other explination.

The NMX fleet itself was holding steady and holding their fire, even though by this time the Eucharis was without question in their range. There were two lines of the things - one facing inward, containing the chaos around the planet, and one facing outward, watching the perimeter like great, black sentinels. Hundreds of thousands of deployed armors and what looked like shuttlepods barred the path inward - the same that were attached to the hulls of the oncoming ships.

Something strange was happening to the Yamataian ships passing through the line. It seemed as if, for a few seconds, the ships were forced to slow down as they passed through this spiderweb of hostiles. No matter how fast they seemed to be going on the other side, it took them a few seconds to pass through. One or two of them was obviously experiancing turbulance, but somehow they got through anyway, regaining all their speed and bearing on the other side.

The new ships that had broken off began to speed towards the Eucharis, their main guns beginning to radiate the same compliment of weaponry in a much greater capacity.

Aether ripped through space as the new ships returned fire for their fallen brethren.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

"Not good! The main cannon is not charged yet!" Nike mentally screamed within herself as new 'friendlies' quickly broke through the NMX lines and fired at them.

"Incoming! Brace for impact!" The neko quickly punched into the system, drawing all shield's energy to the calculated points of impact...

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Hanako quickly jerked the ship to the side, taking a mild glancing blow on the the ship's underside. As a beam hit the shields, the ship's lights flickered. Unfortunately, the oncoming beams broke up the squadron formation, and the Aurora took a more direct hit and had to break away with Nadeshiko extending its shields around Aurora to save it.

Followed by Starling, Eucharis headed towards the field of enemies that stood between her and the dormant warships of the depot. As they raced closer, Hanako asked, "Blueberry, what is that distortion ahead?"

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

The start of the battle seemed eerily familiar to Tasuku, as he ran through the hallway of the Eucharis he could remember running from deck to deck of the Sakura trying to keep systems online, working closely with a pink haired sprite... Cherry... but he had no partner to work with this time.

Rounding a corner he caught sight of Shizu, as lights flashed and the ship shook, "Taii" he said giving the shortest bow he could given the current urgency, "Can I assist you in any way?" Tasuku asked hoping the XO would know where he could be most useful.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Sune had been monitoring the communications from the medbay when he got the XO's call. The image of a Nekovalkyrja after killing her own crew had made him shudder. Obviously the result of whatever bioweapon the Taisho had warned them of. He thought. He just gave a mental sigh when he got the call from Hamada. Jalen-hei. But she knows that, not important. He thought as he grabbed a Type 31 Medkit and a PMS-1 on his way out of the medical bay.

He made his way quickly through the passageways and entered the power armor bay. He selected a free Mindy M2-2a, and quickly removed his uniform storing it in a locker. Sune then stowed the medical supplies in an armor butt pack. As he was putting on the armor he turned to the XO. "Hamada-Taii, will the standard Mindy configuration be sufficient or are you wanting us to carry a modified load?" he inquired.

While waiting for an answer Sune sealed the armor and performed the standard systems check, all indicators were green. "Jalen-Hei, all systems green, awaiting orders Taii."

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

When she nearly ran over a man, Shizu paused to take a second look at him. Even in the power armor, she had to look up.

Now there's two of them? asked the inner Shizu, Where are all these tall men coming from? This is hurting my neck.

As the collision alarm sounded, she braced herself effortlessly against the bulkhead, both her Mindy and her own personal sense of gravity compensating easily for the sudden, shocking shift in direction.

"I can use you," she said simply. "Follow me."

They proceeded to the bay.

Jalen-Hei having already reported, she simply motioned the new guy - whose name she hadn't bothered to hear or memorize - to one of the suits hanging up on the wall, and the armory there.

"Equip yourselves however you like. I do not know what to expect, and it is best that you be comfortable and familiar with your loadouts." With that, the already armored Taii replaced her standard rifle in its rack and, resisting the urge to look up at the two much taller soldiers, picked up an Aether Saber.

She shouldered this with little effort, but a great deal of satisfaction.

On Nataria...

Very little had changed with the battle status in general. An Irim-class had entered the distortions around the NMX ships, and was cautiously making its way through, but it seemed to be taking a little longer than the smaller ships would have.

The Ayame-class were wheeling again, pulling in on the tail of the first expeditionary squadron. Thousands of variable weapons pods began their discharges, lighting up the space behind the Eucharis and her squadron in a deadly wave of light. If they didn't already have a targeting lock for their weaponry, they would, soon.

Sensors would also show severe distortions coming from the prows of at least one Ayame-class.

There was, after all, a REASON they were shaped like that...

A very good reason, indeed.

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Ramiro's mind was racing as he ran through computations and calculations again and again on his screen. He would calculate the damage of an enemy ship just to see it get blown up, then he'd continue on another. The process repeated, he also continued to monitor all areas to the rear in case another ship decided to stop by. A thought then popped into his mind. He turned around to the Taisa and said, "Taisa, since the enemy ships are still using Star Army computers we should be able to gain basic access to the files and communications. What if we sent a virus via the Star Army communications to the the enemy ships to disable the ship and the firewalls. Not only would this make the targets sitting ducks, but it would also make it possible to get the security key you spoke to the Taii of without using a boarding party."

Re: [Mission 7.1] Universe at War - Battle of Nataria

Sune braced himself for the collision and was able to hold his position. Collision? Are we ramming someone or is someone ramming us? Guess we'll find out, the Taii doesn't appear concerned so she must have been expecting this.

Sune was familiar enough with the standard Mindy load from training, but wanted a little extra fire power. He quickly grabbed a Ke-M4-W2901 LAS rifle along with three extra magazines (2-100 round and 1-200 round). He placed them into the pack. He slung the weapon over his shoulder, and took a position near the Taii. "Ready on your command Taii."
