A drone posted a message on a piece of parchment in a small bar in Ternifac, the handwriting a dark blue ink, tight and controlled. It read:

Anti-Mecha Courses now available

As it left, Steiner began fabricating a warehouse large enough for him to fit in, along with a projector-some rather uncomfortable chairs and desks for the class to sit in and hopefully stay awake in. Once he had finished he settled in to wait-and hoped that the local law enforcement, or worse, the Star Army-didn't decide to try and break this up. Might even get a few customers from them even-then again-he'd also been dumb enough to return. Should've just stayed gone...
 
Alice Macy, who was helping out Irchaet in the bar, noticed the flier and took a photo of it, helpfully posting it on social media and asking people to share it that way it would be seen by more people from around the planet and the galaxy.

The Jhuniata desert was vast, largely uninhabited, and full of wreckage...a perfect place for mecha to duke it out.
 
Steiner had just finshed the large scale industrial fabricator. Pulling from old Company Archives, he had began to fabricate the necessary equipment for the lesson-drones hauled infantry scale anti-mecha equipment-launchers, jump packs, satchel charges. It turned out the desert was full of wreckage, which could be easily reclaimed and broken down for additional materials. He had just begun construction on a second fabricator, browsing the local networks while he waited for the process when he spotted something-it was his flyer, along with the message 'Rare opportunity to spare against a mecha.' by a one Alice Macy.

'It's spar, not spare,' he thought, 'but I appreciate you getting the word out.' Perhaps this would not be a foolish venture after all. He had decided that now would be time to bring some of the Company's old equipment back into production, particularly their old mechs. After all, his students would need some practical experience when being on the receiving end.

A short time later, the same drone appeared, and add a secondary, small parchment in the same handwriting and left.

Equipment and machines along with instructions on how to operate them will be provided on site as part of the lessons-while personal equipment is allowed, the owner assumes all liability for damages to said equipment, munitions expended, malfunctions, self-inflicted injuries and death due to mishandling, etc.

Local Law Enforcement did not seem to particularly care about Steiner's plans and construction. But it certainly did get the attention of the Star Army of Yamatai. But not for any punitive action. Oh no, the Rikugun Chief of Staff smelt an opportunity too good to pass up.

"Chui Harris, I have another task for you. Completely optional of course, but it will be of great benefit to the Rikugun. I wish for you to participate in an "Anti-Mecha" course...."

And so went the beginning of the message Mikael Harris received while he was sitting in a bar. He preferred the style of the location over those nearer to Kyoto. So much so that he was contemplating buying a decent condo to act as both a home and a safe house. But for now, he just looked at the bottom of a glass of Yamataian Brandy before sipping it.

Mecha was an area of technology he was interested in. But there was little opportunity to explore it within Yamatai. And a mention of a finalized prototype that he could test was making him seriously consider going. He finally nods to himself in the corner and drinks the rest of his brandy before he gets up and makes his way to the exit. He still had a week left of leave before he had to leave for the New Dawn Conclave for his new assignment.

14:50 local time, Wednesday


Wearing a thick muscular body glove type suit with the adaptive pigmentation set to black, a gray plate carrier with a neck guard could be seen worn over it with a number of magazines and utility pouches attached to it. Normally Mikael had additional armoring in the form of shin, thigh, forearm, and upper armor guards for added protection. But he opted to do without them for this exercise, figuring being more agile would be a better option.

Especially if he was going to properly fit within the larger Type 32 Pilot Pod Taisho Mizumitsu had mentioned in his message. The ensemble was completed with a pair of sunglasses to protect his eyes as his black colored helmet was under his right arm. He just stood patiently, listening and watching his surroundings for Albert Steiner to make his appearance. He paid his 6,000 KS in advance.

To say Steiner was surprised when he'd gotten 6000 ks payment from a "Mikael Harris", and then then realized his error when he had not actually listed the location of his facility, but decided, after constructing a few sentry drones and turrets, to see if he could find his new student. As the warden trundled along, he made to see if he could locate his new charge.

When he spotted someone lurking around the outskirts, dressed in a body suit and a grey carrier plat with a wide variety of magazine pouches and a sunglasses, helmet tucked under his arm as he surveyed the desert. Figuring it was his charge, he called out. "Mikael Harris?" He stopped around 6 meters, not quite wanting to enter the outer city incase this was some kind of trick.

Mikael looked up at Steiner, it didn't take long for him to recognize him as the same crazy civilian from the Battle of Glimmergold. But Mikael doesn't make any outward acknowledgment of this, preferring to hide his affiliation with the Star Army for as long as possible. He just turns over towards the Steiner and simply nods his head.

"Yup, I take it you are the Mecha instructor. No one else?"

"That is correct." He replied, feeling slightly more at ease now that he had some assurance that this was indeed genuine, "Please follow me." He motioned with his battlefist for the man to follow him back to the facility.

"Very well." Mikael said before donning his helmet. He wasn't sure where exactly he was going to take him, but he would be ready for anything that could be thrown at him. Doesn't matter if it is from Steiner or some random wannabe Yamataian desert bandit.

The facility was a large, utilitarian grey structure, around 40 feet tall and 40 feet wide, nestled into a wide, hardpacked plain with a number of rocky outcroppings in the distance-perfect for some of the scenarios that Steiner had in mind.

The nano-fabrication facilities were located off to the side around 20 meters from the primary facility-several collapsible gantries for the mechas-in this case the Dragoon I-three built in total so far stored in the main facility-with two more under construction. The other fabricator, meant to construct the various parts and pieces of equipment resembled a slightly smaller version of the main facility. Both were rimmed by walls topped with razor wire and heavy duty automated turrets and multiple flights of sentry drones patrolled the perimeter.

As the large warehouse sliding doors opened, the pair entered the planned classroom-drones flew over the three already constructed machines-running diagnostics and performing basic repairs and maintenance. His footsteps drowned out his students. As they approached the teaching area, he stopped short and spoke, staring at Mikael through one of the auxiliary cams. "So, I am going to assume you understand the risks associated with this program-so we'll get started." He began his trundling pace, his steady footsteps continuing their echo as he stood off to the side and motioned to the desks. "Please be seated."

Mikael looked around the facility and the surrounding area as he entered. He had no idea the desert had all this out here. Seemed like the perfect place for a safehouse or testing range for his own mechanical designs he had in his head. But that would be for another time. When addressed by Steiner, he simply looks up to him, face hidden by the polarized visor.

"Yup, wouldn't be here otherwise." he said with a thumbs-up before taking a seat at one of the desks. It was a bit of a challenge since sitting in standard chairs was not exactly on the priority list of ergonomics features for the Type 41 Hard Suit.

The lights dimmed on a mental command from the old sentinel. "Good. So seeing as you are the only student I have at the moment, we will start with a brief overview on basic walker roles, common operation doctrines and tactics and then go over a few of the means to dispose of them." The projector kicked on, displaying on the wall a pair of diagrams. Infantry units with series of tanks supporting them with several squads of three walkers, a dozen dispersed evenly throughout the formation-a textbook combined arms formation. "Bear in mind as we proceed that my expertise in mech combat is mainly in the terrestrial field, so that will primarily be the bulk of the subject matter that we cover here."

"Also keep in mind that while I will keep this as brief as possible, I will be going over the two most common, but by no means the only-of said doctrines." He added, wanting to ensure that his student didn't, though he expected he wouldn't based on the bearing of the man, make the mistake of thinking that everything learned here would be the primary means he would encounter, "There are likely more than a few variations that I am not aware of, or even completely different method of operations that I cannot cover here-if you have questions, I will do my best to answer them."

"Operational doctrines are as following; the first of these is using conventional and powered armored infantry with combat vehicles in combined arms mixed in with artillery and air support and using the mechas as form of support to shore up weak points in the force as well as various other tasks having them deal with hardened targets that can't be reached by conventional vehicles or air units, providing additional fire support, counting another walkers-etc. This is the primary, and most commonly employed series of tactics, the second-" He gestured to the second diagram-this had the walkers in a wedge formation, with infantry and vehicles reinforcing the flanks and rear, "-is to use them as the centerpiece to an assault; this is admittedly the riskier of the two tactics as depending on what the machine is built to do, force composition and battle readiness of its supporting units and machine condition, terrain, enemy force composition and defensive capabilities-etc."

"Both doctrines have their merits, but your main concern will be countering the walkers themselves." The projector clicked, cycling to show three machines-one resembled an exotic knight, holding an axe and a heavy kite shield. The second was a Dragoon I, and the third was a hunchbacked machine, its main body sloping forward, the cockpit set in the middle of the torso with three toed, reverse jointed legs, long broad legs ending in what looked like a heavy duty weapons housing with a trio of energy weapons-particle cannons and lasers respectively. A pair of heavy duty automatic cannons were perched on its shoulders, with missile housings on either side of the cockpit with enough tubes to reduce anything it ran into into scrap. "The three primary categories of the machines you most likely encounter will have a different focus on what they are built on, and these machines will serve as an example of what you can expect."

"The first," The old sentinel explained as he approached the bored, pointing a large finger at the knight, "Is a Brawler variant-the vast majority of the time, they will mainly be melee oriented with a few short-ranged weapons to help either soften up a victim or deal with infantry. They are normally fitted with the heaviest armor and shielding available, along with the best engines and more likely than not have limited flight capabilities. In other words, fast, powerful and a menace to deal with and capable of withstanding a tremendous amount of punishment-these are not the easiest to deal with and often require coordination between infantry, vehicle and mecha elements to bring down, though another brawler can serve well enough. Given the expense and difficulty of production they are often used primarily for shock operations or for major offensives."

He shifted to the hunchbacked machine. "The second is a fire support variant-as you already have likely surmised is self explanatory-they often are used when deploying tanks is prohibitive or artillery support when fixed positions won't work or artillery vehicles are too slow and cumbersome to effectively used in a mobile engagement. Depending on their size and weight they are either average to decently armored and/or shielded and have a decent degree of mobility to reposition themselves. They are easier to counter than Brawlers, particularly if you can close the distance fast enough though outgunning them is an option-depending on loadout and weapons they may or may not have decent anti-infantry capabilities." He paused, and then added, "Also bear in mind that depending on the loadout-these machines can run hot, so pushing them hard enough that they overheat is an option-though this is risky unto itself as it requires the enemy behaving in a certain way and may end up going badly-an experienced pilot may have good heat management skills depending on their machine. But if you can get them nice and hot-they could end up cooking off their ammunition bins-quite a satisfying sight." He allowed himself a chuckle, a harsh grating sound-bastard piloting that machine had tried to off him with barrage of all his weapons...dismissing the thought he went back to the lesson at hand regaining his serious demeanor.

"The third and final is essentially a mixed role machine-even if they are designed and designated as a straightforward battle mecha," He pointed to the Dragoon I, "These tend to be a mixed bag-often combining fire support and brawling capabilities, but more often than not excelling in neither. Some may be well armored, armed, but simply not fast enough to close the distance to fight in hand to hand or having the firepower to trade shots. Some may be fast but not have the endurance or punch to go toe to toe with most targets. On top of that they tend to be far more expensive than normal mechas. Though I will admit these unfortunately also tend to be the most unpredictable and at times despite their flaws the most difficult to counter effectively, so the best course of action is observation then figure out a means of engagement."

He looked at Mikeal. "Any questions?"

Mikael listened and mentally recorded Steiner's briefing. He personally had no experience with Mecha as they Star Army of Yamatai almost exclusively made use of Power Armor with tanks and TASHA units providing support much like the diagrams that he was being shown. Modern Rikugun tactics mirrored the 2nd diagram the most with Power Armor leading the way and the armored element to the rear due to their slow speed.

"Countering Mecha with Mecha makes sense." Mikael muttered and nodded largely only to himself as he listened. The brawler gave him memories of encounters with NMX Rippers and Reavers, as well as the compact Mecha prototype he encountered in a Kuvexian research facility. The last two did not have any real analogies he could compare with. Though the specs of the new M19 being sent over certainly seem to have one foot in each of the last two.

He instinctively tried to figure weak points on each of the models where a well placed explosive might get past most of the armor or disable a critical component.

"The local military focuses a lot on the 2nd diagram of wedge formations for assaults. Line columns would only be seen when moving. But they are rare considering one can just fly. As for your brief on mecha, how do they overheat? Power systems or the heat generated from chemical power projectiles?" Mikael asked, curious to the answer.
 
Steiner stared at the man for a moment, listening to him come to his own conclusions, but then first part of that last statement-the knowledge on local military formations was odd; Yamatai even with his limited dealings didn't strike him as willing to make that public knowledge, short of him being a merc as he had been who'd had a run in with them, and while his knowledge of most of the local powers was sketchy, he doubted that the-...huh. 'Alright then...guess we'll have to wait and see.' He decided, figuring it wasn't an issue quite worth raising, but he would look into it at some point.

"Generally speaking, most mecha powerplants generate heat Mikael." He replied, pulling up a rough diagram of most of the commonly available powerplants of his home universe, pulled from after action reports and trade they had conducted, "Most mechas tend to use fusion reactors for powerplants, myself included-" The mechanoid rapped his chest lightly, the noise echoing throughout the warehouse though his armor absorbed the shocks from the motion keeping them from disturbing the fluid in his unit, "But again, this is not unnessciarily the golden standard-some have been known to use nuclear fission plants and recycle the waste materials for use in fusion plants, then use the byproducts from that process-usually plutonium-to power the fission plants. Reduces fuel costs, but add a degree of logistical trouble." Steiner was ready to go further into the subject, and realized that it was best to stay on topic. "Others may use internal combustion engines-these are usually construction or security models-but I have encountered a few military models that use them, which do get fairly hot and normally can't use energy weapons without modifications to weapons themselves or using an external handheld weapon, but the radiators are usually sufficient to deal with any excess heat generated."

"Much like the Fission/Fusion combination, it has its own share problems, fuel to name one. The third is a power cell or battery array if you want to get technical-these generate next to no heat, but are far more prone to failure or detonation due to overheating depending on whatever is used to store electricity and only have a fraction of the endurance of even a gas engine. Usually why their regulated to either extremely lightweight mechas, combots, power armors, or combat vehicles, also why most of them use solid slug weaponry, though we'll cover that in just moment." Impulsively, Steiner stretched, his mecha's servos squealing slightly in protest. "The fourth, and final that I know of is a fuel cell-usually hydrogen and oxygen-runs pretty cool, not near as stupidly explosive as a power cell if they get hot, but while it has better endurance than the aforementioned power source, it needs replacing every so often but it can power energy weapons more easily."

"Now most fusion plants have some form of heat shielding, usually some form of tungsten alloy combined with a liquid cooling system-and no-due to it's low boiling point liquid nitrogen does not make a good fluid to put in a cooling unit. Most of the cooling systems usually use a water-based solution-usually a glucose solution, though corrosive liquids can be used as well-as for weapon heat generation," Steiner took a moment to gather his thoughts, figuring the best place to start, "First things first-all weapons generate heat-not just chemical projectile-or chemical powered- weapons, and normally internally mounted weapons tend to generate more heat than carried weapons."

"Ballistic weapons tend to generate the least amount of heat, but given how hot gunpowder burns this isn't saying much." He began to pace, his hand moving with each word, cannon pointed down and across his chest, "Most cooling systems can deal with the heat quite effectively, but large caliber guns can be troublesome, so caution should be exercised when firing. Missile weapons also tend to generate quite a bit of waste heat, though this normally related to the type of missile used, amount of propellant, number of tubes, etc."

"Energy weapons are arguably the most troublesome in this regard; fairly damaging and considerably lighter than most other systems." He turned and looked at Mikael, "For the most part-not having an ammunition feed or a supply to worry about is usually helpful as most energy weapons draw directly from the powerplant for the purposes of firing-the tradeoff for this is the enormous amount of waste heat generated when fired."

"Handheld weapons usually have their own cooling systems, though some machines and models have the ability to plug directly into the mecha and take advantage of the cooling systems involved-though this possesses similar disadvantages to the internally mounted weapons. As for the diagrams," He let out a chuckle and flipped back to the formations, "Line formations are not used for actual combat short of those equipped with old black powder weapons, though I will admit it makes for a rather poor example of combined arms tactics."

"On the topic of infantry and mechas capable of true flight-my experience is once again limited save for blasting them out of the sky as they were fairly rare and were made priority targets once they made their appearance-that kind of force projection is usually...troublesome." He paused, looking as pensive as a mecha could, before shaking his head. "I guess most forces here prefer a quick decisive strike then?"

Mikael watched the mecha seemingly watch him for a moment of pause before giving him an answer. The way their infantry moved would be hard to keep a secret considering how often the Star Army of Yamatai is in some kind of military conflict. So the fact it was the reason Steiner had paused never crossed the ex-SAINT soldier.

He just kept recording and understand what he was saying. He just blinked , face hidden by his helmet, at the mention of water-based coolants and ammunition cooking off. He knows it is always a possibility, but typically it only happens when something doesn't have gravity to shield ammo from Scalar Field weaponry. He remembers cooking a Kuvexian that way once.

"It depends on the mission at hand. I won't get into strategies, but all one has to do is see footage of their battles to know how the Star Army of Yamatai and the Star Military of the Democratic Imperium of Nepleslia prefer to fight." Mikael responded back. It wasn't a hard yes or no, but the Yamataians were well known for their aggressive tactics. Lives are cheap when you most likely can be revived back with just a loss of some memories.
 
"I see...I suppose when one has access to...ghost transfer technology I believe that woman called it?" He said, searching for the right words, "One can afford to needlessly throw troops and materiel into the fray." Steiner replied, his transceiver hiding his disdain-he decided not to voice his opinion on that topic any further; this was how these people fought. "To conclude this particular part of the lesson-too much heat is bad for any kind of machine; there are cases of walkers literally melting from the inside out because they got too hot cooking their pilots-or the ammunition bins exploding because of the aforementioned ammo cookoff-though some machines have equipment in place to mitigate that kind of damage, such as wet ammo storage or a 'blast-proof' storage that channels the explosion outside of the machine." The sentinel figured he'd better throw part out about plants suffering from too much heat. "Powerplants can actually suffer catastrophic failure from heat damage-though in the case of fusion plants this isn't so much a small nuke going off as it is a brief flash and smoke from the plasma reaction going cold, though their are exceptions to the rule."

"It should also be noted that atmosphere can affect how well a machine dissipates heat-one such example would be the void of space-with no atmosphere to work with, cooling systems must work that much harder to keep you from doing said aforementioned melting-though some planets may just simply be too hot to fight effectively on, or so cold that it can actually freeze the liquid in them-though the type of coolant may not be as affected by this as one would think.''

"Now, since you are my only student, for this next part we shall take a more...hands on approach to things." He killed the projector and upped the lights, and a drone came up with a bulky looking helmet, "This a Neural Interface Helmet, NIH is its official designation, though 'Neuralhelm' as some of the other jockeys called it will work as well. You will need it to drive one the Dragoons." He pointed to the mechs behind Mikael. "I figure this would be a good time as any-we shall continue with the oral learning once you get it powered up."

The drone set the helmet down and flew off as Steiner opened the warehouse doors. "I will run you through the start-up process." He said has he move a large, wheeled ladder over to the machine.

Mikael looked at the bulky headache and just raised an eyebrow. Now he was really getting curious about the technology being used here. But he didn't voice anything now that his SAINT trained curiosity had been kicked into overdrive.

Clipping the NIH to the back of armor with a cord, he went over towards a ladder to get to the catwalk with access to the Mech's cockpit. Once there, he climbed into the cockpit and switched helmets, placing his own helmet in the back. He looked around the cockpit, looking for anything special or unique.

"I am in. What is the start-up procedure?"
 
"First things first, you need to actually sit down in the pilot chair," He explained, pulling the ladder away, "Once you get settled, in front of you on the dashboard is a blue switch-flip it and it will start it up-make sure your strapped in. Then you will see a series of switches on the roof and wall meant to power up secondary systems-mostly the diagnostics unit and such. Canopy controls are also there-yellow switch. The helmet has wireless capabilities with a back up for a jack located on the back of the helmet incase the wireless unit gets damaged, but does require a moment to sync with the machines, will also link up to an oxygen tank in the event of life support failure located on the back of your chair."

"Once activated, you should feel a tingling across your head-that is the helmet interfacing with your brain-if you start to feel a sharp pain, take it off and power it down-means the helmet is malfunctioning." The mecha had just finished putting the ladder away, "The controls are all analog aside from the helmet-foot pads move the mech back and forth-joysticks and the armrest mountings move the arms and control the weapons. If you want to do something a little more complex such as picking something up or swinging its warhammer around." He looked at the domed head where his student was sitting. "The neurohelm will assist with executing the maneuver-though you will have to have continue to guide the machine."

"And what ever you do, do not pull the red level along side your seat while we are in here-that is the ejection mechanism-ST backup or no, I do not wish to explain how that stain got on my ceiling." There's always that one moron who would see the 'Big Red Lever' and think they had to pull it. He'd seen it happen more than once-and the gruesome aftermath. "Now, I do have a few safety mechanisms implemented for training purposes-weapons will be locked for the moment until you familiarize yourself with the controls."

Oh hell, he'd almost forgotten. "Mikeal, before you do any of that, hanging towards the back of the cockpit is a jumpsuit-you will need to put that on, has a cooling unit that cycles fluid throughout tubes woven through out the suit-button to use it is on the belt, and will keep you from frying-also has some limited NBC protection and seals with the helmet to keep you alive in that event but hopefully you will not have the pleasure of experiencing that any time soon." The sentinel kicked himself-was he trying to kill his student? Hope he didn't mind blue and grey...

Mikael looked back at the jumpsuit. He knew his bodysuit would be able to handle the heat, but the neck seal was designed for one particular helmet. With a heavy sigh, Mikael preceded to climb in the back of the cockpit. Thankfully the jumpsuit seemed rather large, so Mikael was able to slide into it without taking off the bodysuit. Once it was secured, he climbed back out and into the pilot seat.

Mikael did not even have the urge to pull the red release, that side of him dying long ago. Strapping himself into the seat, he proceeded to close the canopy and went through the start-up sequence Steiner told him. He did feel an interesting sensation as the neuro-interface came online. Then there were the wireless signals he was perceiving communicating with the helmet. He thought to himself there might be a possibility for himself to interact directly with the Mech's systems like a wireless SPINE. But he really didn't feel like experimenting right now. Something to add to his internal logs.

Mikael moved the analog joysticks slowly. The feel of it all felt somewhat alien to him though.
 
Steiner chuckled as the saw the arms move slowly; a typical reaction for those unfamiliar with the machine's operation. "Alright, press down forward on one of the footpads-gently-while pushing back on the other to turn-the machine knows the maneuver-and follow me to nav-point Alpha." A brief ping sounded, followed by a small circle showing up in Mikael's vison on the compass. Steiner began to move, making sure to keep one of his auxiliary cams to make sure Miekael didn't stumble or hit the ground. "The more pressure you put on one of those, the faster the machine will go."

"Keep in mind, that machine is thirty tons of armor and weapons, and takes time to move and stop." His own machine wasn't much lighter, but still it was a good point to bring up-momentum was a bitch to deal with when it came to combat walkers. Should he tell the man? No, if he decided take off he'd learn the hard way about the little quirk of the Dragoon-repairs would be a problem later though.

For the first time in a very line time, Mikael was an absolute novice at a task. There were any skill packages he could download to quicken his learning time besides a simple package "You and your joystick: A Guide on Not Crashing and Exploding the Bad Way.". While he waited for that to download and be integrated, he just stomped around like a drunken elephant as he figured out the right combination of pressure to the foot pedals to go forward and turn properly.

He crashed into a support beam as he attempted to turn out of the building and proceed to the provided nav point. "By Pasco's balls! How long does it take someone to figure out this contraption?" Mikael said as he stomped in an uncoordinated fashion, shaking all over in the cockpit. His piloting did improve by a bit in he was sensing how much the unit's weight was influencing its maneuvering.
