ZFHS: Outside the Sports Field

“Come on, Bryn,” Defa said, waving her President onward. “We’re going to be late for the fight.”

“Yeah,” the Neko said, having paused in the path when she spotted her old sensei as she made her way to the field. “I’ll catch up in a second,” she continued, waving her entourage off. Escort dodged, she walked up to her erstwhile aunt, who watched her approach with bemusement.

“Morning, Bryn-chan,” Nenna said with a smile. “How are you doing?”

“Fine,” the student said, not returning the teacher’s good feelings. After a moment of silence, she sighed and asked, “Why?”

Knowing what was on the young Neko’s mind, Nenna said, “Because you had plenty of people to support and help you. Sarena had no one.”

“Yeah,” Bryn said, absent-mindedly scratching the back of her head. “I just wish I had been a better example of the art, you know?”

“You were great, Bryn-chan,” the teacher replied, “You performed to the best of your ability. Sure, you didn’t win, but it’s not like you held back.”

The student rolled her eyes. “Which isn’t the greatest comfort when you lose to a Nepleslian.”

Nenna raised an eyebrow. “Last time I checked, there isn’t a single Yamataian in the final three.”

Bryn sighed, “Yeah, true. Really don’t know how that happened.”

The teacher shrugged. “Maybe you were all underestimating their abilities?” she asked, a small smirk on her lips.

Narrowing her eyes, the younger Neko opened her mouth in protest. “I didn’t, umm,” she stammered, then face palmed herself. “I did, didn’t I?”

“Yep,” Nenna replied, smiling at her niece’s expense. “To be fair, you weren’t the only one and you’re willing to admit your mistake, so I think you’re ahead of the curve.”

“Uggh,” Bryn moaned, “What are we supposed to do with that then?”

The teacher snorted. “You know the answer to that, Brynhildr, whether you want to admit it or not.”

The student was silent at this, lowering her head to look at the ground, until a sudden rise in noise came from the field.

“Looks like it’s about to start,” Nenna said, moving to put a hand on Bryn’s shoulder. “Keep your head up kid. Go get a kebab, sit next to the other competitors, and enjoy the fight. Alright?”

“Yeah, sure,” the student said, putting her own hand on the teacher’s. “Nenna-sensei,” she continued, looking up at the teacher. “Thanks.”

“No problem, Bryn-chan,” the Itto Juni said.

(OOC: Was going to put this in the main thread, but since its closed right now, I'm just putting this here. I can move it once the thread opens again.)
