Closed Put Ads Back On Star Army, But In the Nicest Possible Way

This idea is that we should put ads back on Star Army, because donations (click here to support us) aren't really covering the site's costs and having more money would let us commission art again, get new features, and pay for advertising to bring in more new players to RP with us, which we need to keep growing.

But ads kind of suck, you say?

I feel you. I use an ad-blocker too! But give me a moment and check out my proposal:
  • I'll make 2 versions of our templates: one with ads, and one without
  • We'll leave the ad-equipped one as default for random visitors and members who want to support the community that way
  • If you don't want ads, simply switch to an ad-free version of the template on the wiki and forum, you won't even need an adblocker
Let me know if this would work for you with your up or downvotes.

I mean if it helps cover the site heck yes please do. Just see if you can tailor it I know depending on the ad company might get some questionable stuff. So it gets my vote Wes
 
Yeah, I just want to do it in a way that doesn't cause our members a hassle. I mean, we could make ad-free a perk for site supporters but I you know how I am about user privacy protection and if we give everyone the ability to easily disable them that solves a lot of privacy concerns. So I think giving people choices and not paygating it is the nicest way I could implement this. Star Army's isn't a business and you guys aren't "consumers" you're my RP buddies.

This brings up an excellent point, having NSFW stuff on the site limits where I can put ads and what ad companies I can use. We'll have to be very careful not to shoot ourselves in the foot by violating the vendor's TOS. I know Google is pretty strict about this, even the short slang word for automotive transmission (think that Transylvanian character from Rocky Horror) has gotten warnings sent to webmasters of car forums.
 
I voted up because it doesnt hurt anyone so long as it doesnt cause popups every time i try to click What's New, or so long as they arent like in your face porn related ads (considering the site is now 18+ and doesnt allow minors) or related to that and are more of just everyday advertisement you find around the internet.
 
Honestly, after thinking about it, and going by our previous ad earnings, I don't think it's even worth putting ads up anywhere for something that will basically never come close to even a tenth of our server costs on a monthly basis. Essentially, we're too small to make money on ads. Therefore I'm withdrawing this suggestion.
