I decided to finally submit this occupation for the Star Army of Yamatai. I would have submitted it and another earlier, but felt it was way too barebone. But with Rawolfe interested in doing something with news stories, it seemed like the best time to fill in the rest as things progress.

So I present 1 of possibly 2 new occupations... the dreaded journalist!

This suggestion has been implemented. Votes are no longer accepted.
It likely needs more material to be approved. So if anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

It does. But its on the right track!

I think a good start is to outline some more duties they perform and their constructions. Such as propaganda like interviews they likely spread across the ship and any access they might have to do so. Writing out and outlining orders from officers in public spaces such as a ships taicho wanting to have some certain knowledge in a public place without needing to call a briefing of the entire crew. Or stuff like that.

Also I think its crucial to outline if they are intended to be combat-oriented in any way like if they join the crew in power armor or in full kit with weapons or if they simply tag along on away missions or if they need permission?

My logic behind this is that such a character breaks the mold that is most PCs always striving to be the hero and always be in the limelight and such a role would require them instead to be behind the scenes or following behind and not be a direct combat character but one who reports on or views the successes of such characters. I think (and I'm recommending all this not as a reviewer.) that it might be prevalent to outline the need for self-defence like them being authorized to carry a sidearm but not really them needing to carry a main weapon that would have them shooting at people with aether or energy and not shooting them with the camera or device they should be holding.

I also think its a good idea to possibly make or detail some equipment special to them. Such as camera drones that likely they can use, Recording equipment they have on their person and maybe some kind of uplink to a ship they might have to put their footage and recordings into some kind of cloud-space incase they die.

Updated the wiki page. I did not really think of equipment, but there is a drone that is issued that can be used as interim. lol

I'm a little worried the color will be constantly mistaken for Starship Operations Gray (top).

Journalist (also known as Public Relations Specialist)
The Star Army already has a Public Relations Liaison, so the parenthetical is kind of confusing. Especially because journalists are specifically supposed to not be involved with "public relations" whether the reality of their job makes them involved or not.

PRLs wear mint green. As do Combat Historians, which is similar to a journalist anyway. Maybe SAoY journalists should also wear mint.

Or spin Combat Historian off to Journalist.

That's the problem with computer screens, foliage green is quite distinct from grey. But I can look for a darker/greener variant of it to change to. As for PRLs, they function more like civil affairs/spokespeople rather than a source of information. I guess the question will be now do PRLs also act like broadcast anchors and produce information to be consumed. If they do, it makes more sense for them to be rolled up into this occupation (and rename it to Public Affairs) and keep Combat Historian where it is now.

Mint is for admin work after all.

I think combat historians are supposed to essentially be journalists who document what's happening and make reports about about it for command.

I do kind of like the idea of NOT introducing yet another color to the SAOY job rainbow but Doshii liking the color means a lot to me too. I don't really like that color and I kind of feel olive drab and similar camo-like colors should be reserved for Rikugun occupations so here's what I came up with:

new panel color idea 1.png
Would that work?

The academic regalia color for journalism, for like, graduation hoods for people getting PhD's is Crimson (approx #830119). It looks a lot like Hinomaru Maroon

That's cool but our technicians are already using a very similar crimson color.

#386EA0, that works. I'll save the other color for Rikugun purposes then. Perhaps it should be given to the vehicle operators. At present, they are using the same starship operator gray.

No, I just adjusted it to the nearest web-safe color.

3-day approval timer unless there's more suggestions.

Existing combat historian and PR occupations with no articles will be merged into this one.

My point that journalists shouldn't be referred to as "public relations specialists."
