A number of light utility trucks pulled up outside of an old hangar across from where the YSS Eucharis was being repaired. From them, a group of Yamataian starship captains, identifiable by their white officer caps and white jacket panels, gathered in the dated, sun-bleached conference room inside. Most of them were Chusa or even Shosa in rank, and they were a wide variety of species. The Star Army was very diverse in general, but there was a lot more variety in the non-combat positions like logistics.

A lone Taisa, a Phodian, waddled up onto a step ladder behind a podium at the head of the table. "Thank you everyone for coming so quickly," he said in a quacky voice. "Taisho Yui has sent out a call for volunteers from the Star Army Logistics' Mass Transportation division for an emergency mission far from our borders in potentially hostile territory. The YSS Heartbreaker has discovered a species called the Vekimen who are stranded on a damaged space station and are running low on life support. They have requested the assistance of the Yamatai Star Empire. There are only 100,000 of them left, so we definitely have the capability to save them all. That many Vekimen could fit into two of our ships but play to it safe we will be bringing four Nibashas and also some combat escorts for protection. You will have an hour to gather all of your crew you can and any Star Army volunteers from the area who want to help. Then we will depart."

A figure in a Mindy suit marched from the hangar of the Eucharis. A duffel bag hung from her fingers, likely all the essentials she'd need. Came in with the first group of volunteers. That had as much to do with how close her current assignment was as to how fast she'd jumped on this.

"Santo-Hei Junko Hasegawa." She saluted smartly. "I was told you needed some extra hands."

From a crowd of Mindy 2's came an M2-4 wearing a blend of heavily scrathed SAINT black paint with white infantry thruster wings, countermeasure pods, and support bit launcher. It easily stood out in a crowd of clean cut M2-2D clad infantry.

As if to make it worse, whichever armor pieces hadn't been replaced with white primered stand-ins were not only stuff but were chipped or bent. It would be hard to argue that the mechanical components were in operable condition but again, in a clear abuse of his power no one was willing to argue with a member of SAINT, especially one who had just stepped off of the heavily damaged YSS Eucharis. In the back of his mind he did wonder when director Shida was going to start asking him questions about his actions. It seemed to Candon that it would be a good idea to simply arrange a meeting with him.
Oh, hey. Junko's coming!

He gave her a reserved wave.

All of the volunteers were directed towards a Nibasha-class freighter that was landed nearby. It was painted in the familiar glaucous color the Star Army preferred, except for its orange wings, which showed that is was a logistics ship. Nestled between large quad anti-fighter turrets and below three huge aether-plasma engines was the two-story vehicle bay where they could enter on the lowest deck, Deck 14. There were a small number of cargo trucks inside and a cargo elevator that would take them to Deck 9 where there were some temporary crew quarters assigned to them.

Go Eunbyul and Nam Sohyun, two Santo Hei fresh out of training, were at the elevator to provide directions. They were in orange-paneled logistics uniforms. A gaggle of other volunteers in their Mindy and Daisy armors piled into the elevator, heading up towards the ship's centerline.

Once the last of the volunteers were aboard, the ship's door slowly closed with a hydraulic groan as the ship ascended into the sky.

Junko listened as the ship began its ascent. Having so many soldiers around was more surprising that it should have been. This felt more like her old training batch. More like back when she'd gotten started on the Orochi.

This was the first time since then she didn't see a face from back then. Only one she recognized was Candon, whom she hadn't spent a great deal of time with. She felt more alone than she thought she would, and... regret creeped in. Disloyal it might have been, as much as she needed to be here, she was starting to wish she hadn't.

Was this how Shiho felt, all the time?

"Sir, good to see a familiar face." Junko said to Candon. Couldn't hurt to talk. Her Mindy was freshly maintained, so getting it put up on a rack for the trip was her only real concern.

"It's good to be seen," Candon replied casually, "So what made you want to jump into a Mish sponsored cesspool of biological warfare?"

<<Logistics Nibasha-Class, Deck 14>>

"Those people need Star Army assistance, sir. I couldn't just ignore that in good faith." Which was true enough on its own. Her duty, the one she was born for, was ultimately to fight for the betterment of someone else.

What would it say about her if she hadn't volunteered?

Except, she realized, it seemed many didn't volunteer for this job. She couldn't fault them for it, or find blame. If she thought harder about it, she'd miss them harder than she already did. Note to self, do something very nice for (or to) Freyja-Chan when you get back.

"Besides, its squids, right? Universe would be a lot better place without them."

A few days later, near the Vekimen space station

"Vekimen station, this is the YSS Mindful, we have come at your request to provide medical and transportation services."

Logistics Nibasha-Class, Deck 14

"That's one way to look at it," Candon said with a nod, his voice lowered and became gravely serious, "Do you ever wonder why even high ranking Nekovalkyrja would turncoat and pledge allegiance to the NMX? One thing you'll learn about the Mishhuvurthyar is that they'll make you question why you ever got on this ship, why you even serve the empire. Before we arrive I want you to know, beyond any doubt why it is your fighting for Yamatai."

With that he departed in search of an empty armor rack to continue repairing his armor.

A few days later he would stand ready for combat, his armor still covered with mismatched colors but mechanically stable. He was no engineer but he wouldn't wear armor unless he knew every component on a first-name basis, which always paid off in the end.

<<YSS Mindful, apparently>>

Junko gave her equipment one last inspection before stepping off the rack. Everything was perfectly maintained and fully loaded. Only thing left was to get to the inevitable fighting. Why else would they have so many fully armed cats on deck?

Candon had given her a lot to think about. Wether her loyalty was genuine or brainwashing. What difference her fighting even made in the universe. If she could love a person more than she did the job.

Junko had no answers, only the riddle of her own intentions.

The soldier stood ready, at Candon's side. Minute into waiting, she decided to open a private comm.

"Sir, you're aware of what happened with Orochi?" She asked, already fairly certain he was. "My first confirmed kill was... was another Neko. We'd stormed the bridge, and Reapers came in to repel. We had an ex-NMX with us, so I knew they were just like us, past the socialization."

"I was born, made, to fight for the defense of others. Not just the people of Yamatai, but my sisters as well. They used my stolen sisters, turned my weapons against the people I was meant to shield. Give me half a chance, and I'll burn every last grub from the galaxy."

A Chui came down to the shuttle bay and gave a short briefing to the assembled volunteers.

"Listen up! I'm Chui Sebastián Vallejo, I'm leading the base camp area when we get there. Here's what you need to know: We're not docking the cargo ships directly due to the risk of parasites. Instead we're going to start sending over shuttles to the Vekimen station. We are using T7 types, 48 PAX each plus 4 crew including one pilot and three jump seats. It's okay to stand in the passenger area with the Veks too. Try to load 48 PAX every time. We want to sort the infected from the clear and put only the clear on the transports. Set up a boarding station. Use your science scanners. Nobody gets on a shuttle without being cleared by medical at the boarding station. Anyone with a Mishhu in them gets sent to another line, with assistance from a stun blast if necessary, and gets a medical shuttle for extraction. You see any loose parasites running around, you fry them. No exploring on your own. If you leave the boarding area or medical area and go deeper into their station you need to be in a fire team of 4. Engage Infected Veks with the minimum force necessary. Stay vigilant, stay patient. We have a lot of people to move and this is a good chance to earn their species' gratefulness for life, so don't screw it up for Yamatai. Questions?"

To: YSS Mindful
From: VDTF Node Centre

YSS Mindful, we are grateful for your assistance. We are prepared to take you within our Mining Hangar, or you can dock at our external docking bay. We have lit up both points, and will accommodate either of these preferred options. The Sraralumee shall be available to greet you upon landing.

<<YSS Mindful, Shuttle Bay>>

Junko did a quick check on mission equipment. She'd used the science scanner before, trained with it and every piece of gear. This would be the first time she was using it in the field, though. Module was all set to go, though.

Junko had no questions for the Chui at this time. She knew where to go, what to do and what she needed to do it. Only thing she was wondering was how likely a Mishu attack was, but she doubted the Chui knew that. If they did, it'd be like on Orochi, something outside expectations entirely.

And she had a very good idea what to do in that case.

Logistics Nibasha-Class

Candon simply nodded to Junko, "Don't forget that. You may find other reasons, maybe even personal causes, but for now just keep that in mind... oh, and if anyone wants to offer you a future in Mishhuvurthyar society just shoot 'em in the throat."

Candon had no questions for the Chui. It was going to be a simple task, difficult but simple.
