Sayumi is a short and curvaceous woman with a distinctive, pear-shaped profile and dark violet hair, styled in a long pixie cut. She has a completely flat chest, strikingly full glutes, and thick thighs which lend her body a bottom-heavy and feminine silhouette. Her skin tone is creamy and possesses neutral undertones.

Sayumi has big, violet eyes, which are the same color as her hair and are emphasized with long top and bottom lashes. Her facial profile is a mix between an inverted triangle and a round profile, on account of her plump cheeks. She has pouty, light magenta lips and a delicate nose.

Asahina Sayumi is a perfectionist. She can set her mind upon a set of skills with a savant-like focus and become extremely proficient in its practice, often at the cost of neglecting other pursuits. However, Sayumi is inwardly-focused and she tends to fixate upon the successes and failings of her own actions. As a result, she often fails to see things through a broader and meta-analytical context, in favor of intensely examining (or praising) her own actions.

Quite simply, Sayumi is an incredibly selfish woman at her worst and an over achiever at her best. This also extends to her social tendencies. She enjoys talking about herself, while struggling to listen, with the exception of her professional superiors and instances in which the conversation pertains directly to her. She puts a large amount of time and effort into her appearance as well, although this habit can be more strongly accounted to the influence of her parents, rather than her mild narcissistic tendencies.

Asahina Sayumi was born as a Geshrin in what was then known as Geshrinopolis, as the daughter of two cosmetologists. In spite of the disruption of the Second, Third, and Fourth Elysian Wars, her parents maintained a beauty salon throughout the entirety of her childhood and teenage years, enabling her family to live a comfortable, Yamataian middle class lifestyle. As the only child, Sayumi received a great deal of attention from her parents, who invested a considerable amount of financial resources towards her development.

Although her parents were exacting in their standards for her, Sayumi was granted a large amount of control over her education and side activities, a conscious choice by her parents in order to ensure that their daughter did not feel emotionally overwhelmed or stressed. After seeing a kid's cartoon musical featuring a harpist as one of the main characters, Sayumi was enrolled in harp lessons, to learn the pedal harp, upon her own request. She devoted much of her time to the instruments and her musical skills, to adhere to the high standards of achievement that her parents had set for her. Her attention to her craft paid off, playing in numerous honor orchestras while growing up and performing many solo pieces as well. Sayumi was also a high-achieving student, but in stark contrast to her passion for the harp, she strongly loathed school while growing up, only finding solace in her musical and athletic classes.

As a university student, Sayumi majored in music to further developing her skills as a harpist. She played within her school's official orchestra as well, an activity which she enjoyed considerably. However, instead of pursuing an advanced degree, after graduating from college, Sayumi enlisted within the Star Army of Yamatai. Quite simply, it was a spontaneous decision motivated by a latent wanderlust and a few recruitment advertisements, but one that was not executed without research or preparation in advance.

After completing basic soldier training, Sayumi entered and completed advanced infantry training as well, before being assigned to the YSS Sakura II.
