Height: 188cm (6 ft, 2in)
Weight: 80kg (170lbs)
Build and Skin Color: Bernhard is a muscular man, trained in years of street combat. He has tanned skin from all the time he has spent out on the streets.
Eyes and Facial Features: Bernhard has dark green eyes. He is square jawed.
Hair Color and Style: He has dark brown hair, cut short so it doesn't block his vision in a power armor.
Distinguishing Features: Multiple body scars from knife and gunshot wounds from years of working security for his family's clinic
Personality: Bernhard is, at heart, idealistic about what Nepleslia is and could be. He knows how flawed its society is, having grown up amongst a community of Streeters. Outwardly, some have described him as uncaring and unemotional. Bernhard describes himself as a reliable person, nothing more. He is extremely serious when on duty and tireless in his efforts, no matter how trivial the task.
He is, nonetheless, passionate about Nepleslia and its role as a major power. Bernhard is not given to boasting or self-promotion and rarely speaks unless spoken to. During his medical training with the Marines, his instructors noted he was extremely methodical and efficient in his procedures and did not skip steps, even if they were to his benefit.
Likes: Swords, knives, guns, chocolate
Dislikes: People who goof off, Nekos
Goals: Be part of the rise of Democratic Imperium

Bernhard's parents are doctors who run a non-profit clinic for the low income families in Nepleslian society. His older brother, Markus, runs the security and acts as a doctor when his parents are too tired. Bernhard's adoptive siblings are both too young to have any place in the clinic yet, though both seem intrigued by the medical work the rest of the family has done. With his brother's time split between overseeing the clinic and helping patients, Bernhard acted as a security guard for the clinic. Most of his efforts were spent finding volunteer guards from among the patients and their families.
During the Street War, the clinic was closed and the family went into hiding, waiting for the chaos to cease. When the Democratic Imperium of Nepleslia was created and order restored, the clinic was repaired and reopened. Due to its charitable nature, funds were always hard to come by. Bernhard wanted to leave to join the military but because the family could not afford a professional security guard to replace him, Bernhard had to put off his plan to join the Marines.
In YE 32, Bernhard's parents managed to acquire enough money to hire a part-time security guard through a reliable agency. This freed Bernhard to join the Marines. Given his family's medical background, he chose to train as a combat medic.
Bernhard was part of 4th Fleet's operations in the Tange system. He played a prominent role in helping evacuate and screen civilians. He was wounded in action by enemy action. For his commitment to his duty, Bernhard was awarded an Iron Fist.
Bernhard participated in 4th Fleet operations at System 87I, where he was wounded at the end. His squad, the Cavaliers, were tasked with breaching an NMX facility and extracting as much data as they could. During this mission, he treated fellow Marines and was forced to evacuate the squad's other medic after she was wounded by enemy fire. When the order was given to fall back due to heavier-than-expected NMX resistance, Bernhard was the first one to obey. This resulted in an accusation of cowardice by a squadmate. Bernhard's response was to suggest lodging a formal accusation.
Following the need for medics in 1st Assault Fleet, Bernhard volunteered for attachment to a 1st Fleet unit for the duration of their upcoming operation. He could also be recalled to 4th Fleet if his skills were needed. Laura Romero and Lisa Simmons spent time with him the night before he departed for 1st Fleet
Bernhard was part of the first wave of Marines sent down to Rok'Veru and was almost immediately cut off. Within moments of landing, the first wave of Marines had become scattered from their designated landing zones. Worse, Bernhard's squad was wiped out except for him during the fighting. Aimlessly, he wandered the ruins of Rok'Veru alone and armed only with what he had brought. As ammunition dwindled, he received a message that the flagship had been taken out and that the Fleet was withdrawing to a safe distance.
The only silver lining was the designated rendezvous point for the Marines to meet up. After hours of heightened anxiety with only his own wits, Bernhard was too glad to finally have some direction.
At the train station, he met up with numerous other Marines as well as Grand Admiral Flint Vanderhuge. This was the second Grand Admiral Bernhard could claim to have to seen in person. Though physically massive and a charismatic personality, Bernhard felt that Vanderhuge lacked the deadly, calculating demeanor of Dominic Valken. Vanderhuge's chief of staff was more of what Bernhard believed Admirals were supposed to be like, after experiencing the leadership style of Admiral Valken.
During the action, he helped take out a Render but was slightly injured and his suit damaged. He and the others fled the location when it came under heavy NMX attack, taking a group of civilians with them. They fled to a safer location underground where Bernhard and Alex Mayhew could treat the wounded Admiral de Luca
Sometime afterwards, he was wounded in combat and evacuated from Rok'Veru on a hospital ship. He was sent to Nepleslia for a week's recuperation before being transferred back to 4th Fleet. During that time, Bernhard began to develop survivor's guilt as he fully realized that he, alone, out of a squad of ten had survived the initial assault. He also began having vivid dreams of the sprawling corpses and endless burnt out buildings on Rok'Veru.
Bernhard was involved in the operations to scour Nepleslia Prime of insurgents looking to assassinate Grand Admiral Valken. His role was relatively minor, giving medical support more than participating in combat.
After this, his unit was part of the war games held on Nepleslia during the International Relations Conference between 1st, 2nd and 4th Fleets.
When he returned to 4th Fleet, he was quickly reunited with a very delighted Laura Romero and Sergeant Volkov. In her happiness to see him, Laura didn't notice Bernhard's lack of focus. Following their promotions, they were assigned to a room together. It was here that Laura noticed that Bernhard was being haunted by something. She surprised him by being warm, kind and maternal when she told him that it was okay. The next day, they took leave together, along with Bernhard's younger adoptive brother, to stay with the Greer family.
In YE 36, Bernhard and the rest of his squad fought against Paragon mercenaries hired by the Pan-Union Trading Company to destabilize Nepleslia. The plan was to assassinate Grand Admiral Valken and create the impression that a state of revolt was about to occur. Following the surrender of an NMX Nightmare at a secret NMX facility, the IPG realized that the plot was a manipulation by NMX agents within the GU. Anything else was classified from him.
During a spell of leave with Laura, Bernhard proposed to his fellow medic, after much goading from his squadmates. He was very hesitant because he felt that with her intelligence, Laura could become one of Nepleslia's medical pioneers. He believed she would be throwing away that bright potential future by settling for a guy whose highest ambition was to continue the family's neighborhood clinic and who could, in no way, hold a candle to her medical brilliance. He was convinced by his squad leader, Phaedra "Wolf" Volkov, that in the end, Laura's happiness was what mattered and Nepleslia should come second.
Following this leave, he and the rest of her squad were trained to Marine Commandos. Bernhard continued to specialize in his medical skills, certifying as the Marine Commandos' first doctor and earning him a promotion to Chief. While he was still less comfortable with the high tech wizardry provided by state of the art MEDTech gear, he has grown in his capabilities to use them. Bernhard remains better at improvised and unorthodox techniques but he has learnt to combine them with the tools provided by his new position.
As a result, when the Cavalier Squad was disbanded as to assign Marine Commandos where they would be most effective, Laura was promoted to Senior Corporal and given command of a strange assignment, one which Nepleslia could not allow to fail. Training Free Spacers to fight.
Bernhard grew up learning how to fight in both armed and unarmed combat. His training in the Marines has, however, given his fighting style a more disciplined approach. He is able to disarm or kill any humanoid opponent.
Before he entered the Marines, he was a skilled pistol shooter. After the completion of basic training, he is also able to use a rifle and shotgun with ease. Bernhard is also capable of piloting any Nepleslian power armour, though its maintenance is something that he leaves to others.
He is best with a NAM Terratech General Combat Armorsuit – “Hostile”, though he has been very curious to try one of the newer M10 Raider Light Armor
Bernhard is familiar with basic radio operation and procedures and can make transmissions to and receive transmissions from other characters through headsets, ships, ground vehicles, power armor, and shuttles in both combat and non-combat conditions. He is fluent in Nepleslian. He can speak and write both correctly and efficiently and can write reports, fill forms, issue orders under fire, etc. The character is skilled in field communications and is proficient in all rudimentary forms of communication (hand signals, flashing lights, etc).
Bernahrd nows how to survive in hostile environments. He can build shelters, hunt and forage for food, build a fire, etc. He can camouflage himself and is familiar with guerrilla warfare tactics.
Bernhard can understand and give out tactical commands and work with his troop to follow those commands efficiently. He knows the importance of teamwork on the battlefield, has been intensively trained in discipline and morale, and is able to recognize the command structure even while under extreme pressure (combat, etc). He is also able to recognize ambush points. Bernhard knows basic math in order to calculate distances, etc, and can use a tactical map.
Bernhard's medical skill does not rival that of his parents or older brother but they are more than that of the average Nepleslian medic. He is able to diagnose diseases as well as wounds. Having spent years watching his parents work in a surgery with minimal equipment, Bernhard has learnt several family techniques for unorthodox (and somewhat dangerous) medical treatment.
At the same time, he is also still a little slow to make use of the military's state of the art equipment due to his greater inexperience with such tools.
Following his IPG training, Bernhard qualified as a Marine Doctor, fulfilling his initial ambition to become a licensed doctor. This also earned him a promotion to Chief, though he is excluded from unit command unless under extenuating circumstances. Nonetheless, as a Marine Commando, he is also expected to serve in combat when necessary and his rank as Chief permits his to give orders to lower ranking Marines so as long as they do not conflict with the squad leader's own orders.
Bernhard was noted as being extremely adaptive and cool under pressure when performing field surgeries. In particular, the use of unorthodox and improvised medical treatments earned him much respect and many notes were taken by IPG medics to learn from his techniques.
Having worked long and hard to nurture Laura Romero, in addition to his own younger siblings, Bernhard has become quite adept at his own style of leadership. With lots of patience and a calm demeanor, he is a stark contrast to his fiancee, which is why they get along so well. Bernhard provides, on a very unofficial level, much of the positive and nurturing mindset which Laura lacks, through no fault of her own.
