Physical Characteristics

Hayashi Akiko is roughly 160 centimeters tall and in possession of the elegant-yet-athletic frame that is one of the chief hallmarks of the Nekovalkyrja; unlike the vast majority of said Nekovalkyrja, however, she masses well over 60 kilograms, courtesy of the Eihei's additional abilities. Her shapely and sensuous figure is smooth to the touch and cream-colored, while her almond-shaped eyes are an earthly hue of jade; lastly, her facial structure is visibly Asiatic in appearance, featuring a squarish jawline, prominent cheekbones, and plump, rounded lips.

Akiko's hair, complementing her analytical nature, is a deep navy blue that reaches down to her shoulders; it's layered, straight, and methodically well-kept in appearance. Her Neko-style ears are a bit long in length and outward-swept; they're covered in smooth, blue-colored fur that matches her hair in coloration.

Psychological Characteristics

In brief, Hayashi Akiko is an introverted perfectionist who keeps her emotions tightly controlled, an idealist who fervently believes that the Star Army of Yamatai should be composed solely of Nekovalkyrja, due to the fact that they - unlike, say, the β€œcivilian” Minkans - are specifically designed for combat and therefore would perform better overall, thereby maximizing the Army's efficiency and effectiveness. She holds both herself and those around her to ordinary standards taken to un-ordinary levels, hence she's equally self-deprecating and critical of others because of the fact that neither group meets the aforementioned standards; this, plus the fact that the Army obviously hasn't expelled all non-Nekovalkyrja is the primary reason her mood can usually be described as something between β€œdour” and β€œstony.”

She's stubborn, tenacious, and inquisitive, refusing to let things that are β€œgood enough” fall to the wayside, for β€œgood enough” simply isn't good enough when compared to perfection; additionally, she's pessimistic, frequently assuming the worst due to her aforementioned unrealistic standards. She'll also become irritated - very irritated - if she's unable to think and plan her actions out, as, in this Neko's eyes, rash, impulsive behavior is the definition of chaos and therefore is the complete opposite of β€œperfection.”

For Akiko, it's easier to reject and hate than it is to love and embrace, thus her interests and tastes are chosen with the utmost care - and are held very close to her heart (which, contrary to popular opinion, she does indeed have). She can also be argumentative when the situation allows for it, owing to her inability to let things go if they seem wrong, applying her favorite β€œweapons” of reason, logic, and evidence in an analytical and precise manner; that said, however, she doesn't argue in order to dominate others - rather, she argues to set (perceived) wrongs right. She responds to compliments poorly, and tends to blame herself harshly for mistakes, thanks to her acute awareness of her own imperfection; lastly, she typically tackles problems directly, rather than β€œbeating around the bush.”

Socially, this particular operative is most at ease when alone, as she finds spending time with others to almost always be draining; furthermore, she's very choosy about whom she associates herself with, given the previously-mentioned standards - nor does she even consider herself terribly interesting to begin with, given her self-deprecating nature (which itself stems from her β€œimperfection”). This doesn't mean she's completely anti-social, of course, as given a quiet setting and someone she's comfortable with, Akiko can be incredibly talkative; it does, however, mean that she's incredibly wary of making friends and takes a while to become β€œcomfortable” with them in the first place - for all of the individuals Akiko considers to be β€œfriends” have her complete and undivided loyalty. Finally, she's very possessive of the equipment issued to her, as she cares about it deeply - and thus worries equally that others will not look after it with the same level of care.

Though it's not exactly easy to notice at first thanks to her impressive levels of self-control, Akiko is extremely emotional and is easily hurt by her perfectionistic tendencies. Her moods are, in a way, constructed similarly to glass sculptures - constructed slowly and deliberately, but easily shattered and nearly impossible to repair. The good news for those around her, however, is that Akiko responds with tears and misery instead of rage when pushed past her limits - and that in itself takes a considerable effort, given that Akiko is very, very slow to β€œsnap.” The bad news for those around her is that she can still be quite moody when upset, which can occur somewhat frequently given that she's rather β€œthin-skinned.” To end, she isn't the kind of person to get back at another via insults - instead, she's more likely to make them feel guilty.

Created in the chilly autumn of YE 34, Hayashi Akiko was quite literally a child of the Second Mishhuvurthyar War, for her dripping form emerged from a hemosynthetic tube located in the middle levels of the Star Army Headquarters building just as the opening shots of the Battle of Yamatai were fired. Although far too β€œyoung” to contribute to the defense of her homeworld, Akiko would (even without the benefits of digital memory) never forget that gut-wrenching sense of pure horror she felt upon viewing the SANDRA broadcast that followed the aforementioned battle's conclusion, nor would she ever forget the crushing sense of failure she felt as that reporter named city after city that had been either damaged or destroyed by the - in this particular twelve-hour-old Type 33 Nekovalkyrja's mind - Army's failure to stop the NMX invaders before they could wreak such abominable levels of havoc and destruction upon the very heart and soul of the Yamatai Star Empire.

It was that sense of failure, that sense of fundamental wrongness which led her to the inescapable conclusion that something from within the Star Army of Yamatai had made it imperfect - and that it would be her sworn duty to return it to perfection, no matter what the cost.

Accomplishing such a lofty goal was, of course, something infinitely easier than done, as the drill instructors at Fort Victory could've cared less about one particular Neko's personal views (after all, she was only one out of a million); what they did care about, though, was the fact that Akiko's performance - in every aspect of Basic with the notable exception of Socialization, courtesy of her reluctance to relate to anyone she deemed β€œimperfect” - was phenomenally high due to the sheer amount of zeal she poured into her studies. Her natural stubbornness, tenacity, and love for (intellectual, thankfully) arguments didn't exactly improve her relationship with the other trainees, either; fortunately, however, it did improve her chances of being noticed by the higher-ups, which became apparent to Akiko when she woke up the morning after her group's graduation ceremony inside a sterile hospital room and, after glancing outside through the nearby window, realized that at some point during the previous night she'd been β€œtransferred” over 800 kilometers from Kyoto's Fort Victory to the enigmatic Black Sands Testing Range as nowhere else on Yamatai was there both black sand and a military base, nor would anyone else have been able to simply β€œshuffle” a Type 33 Nekovalkyrja around with such ease.

Less than a minute later, a silver-haired and grey-eyed Nekovalkryja clad in the black-paneled uniform of Intelligence entered the room, confirmed Akiko's suspicions, and proceeded to give the just-over-three-months-old soldier an offer that she simply couldn't refuse: if she completed one last piece of paperwork and passed Star Army Intelligence's infamous training program, she'd finally be in a position to begin making progress towards her goal of making the Star Army of Yamatai perfect, thanks to the vast powers and resources available to the members of said organization. As one can probably imagine, Akiko accepted the offer without a second thought - and as one can also probably imagine, she didn't realize the grievous mistake she'd made until many, many years afterward.

That particular mistake aside, Akiko's experience post-surgery at the Black Sands Testing Range was perhaps one of the most exhilarating times of her life, as if Basic had been the foundry that forged her spirit into a sword of the Army, SELECT and INDOC were the high-pressure industrial compressors that crushed that sword, refining it into a rapier of Intelligence capable of piercing even the legendary Yamataium. It wasn't enough to be smart, to be stubborn, or to be inquisitive, however - because everyone there was all of those and more - and for several long, painful weeks Akiko feared for her success, to the point where she nearly suffered a mental breakdown while alone during a particularly extreme SERE3) exercise deep within the jungles surrounding the Range. Although she passed (quite comfortably, ironically enough), the ordeal taught the young Neko the value of being pessimistic and assuming the worst was bound to happen, the wisdom in planning for every possible scenario, no matter how plausible or insane, and the advantages of always analyzing the facts and drawing conclusions from them before taking action - and with those lessons taken to heart, the rest of her time at Black Sands went infinitely smoother; in fact, by the time of her graduation (and shortly after her upgrade to the NH-33S) on a hot summer afternoon in YE 35 from the program, she was ranked seventh in her class - not first, as she'd been hoping for ever since her first day twenty-four weeks earlier, but still quite prestigious - which was appropriately reflected in her first assignment: a high-risk, multiple-operative β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ on the planet β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ in order to assist the forces of the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ in eliminating dug-in remnants of the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ by β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, and (if absolutely necessary) β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“. Everyone on the team (β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, a Nekovalkyrja and the ad-hoc team's leader, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, a Minkan combat engineer, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, a Caelisolan heavy weapons operator, Akiko herself as the team's scout/sniper, and β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, a Minkan medic) knew that the mission was probably going to head southwards immediately - yet no one could've possibly predicted the sheer magnitude of the clusterfuck that was about to occur.

Even from the very beginning, things went horribly, horribly wrong for the operatives. β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ was unable to attend the mission due to a last-minute paperwork snafu, thus depriving the team of a dedicated (albeit not strictly necessary) medical specialist; worse, though, was that the almost immediately after entering the atmosphere of β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“-equipped β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ carrying Akiko and the others suffered a catastrophic malfunction mid-flight, thereby necessitating the abandonment of the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ several dozen kilometers short of the planned drop zone. Although everyone (save β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, who had a β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“-coated β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“) was equipped with the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ variant of the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, the loss of so much mission-critical material (much of it β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ and β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“) would only cause further problems later on, especially since the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“'s explosive β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ attracted a lot of unwanted attention from β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ forces in the region; furthermore, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ became separated from the group due to egressing at the last possible moment in an ill-fated attempt to scavenge whatever possible from the ruined β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“'s remains - hence it was decided by β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ to regroup with the nearest allied forces at β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, some β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ kilometers away and on the other side of the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“-held spaceport of β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“.

It was a simple plan, and to β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“'s credit, it worked flawlessly up until the very end. As they'd all been taught in training, the group covered as much distance as possible under the cover of darkness, rested during the daytime, and was even able to infiltrate the aforementioned spaceport with relatively little difficulty, thanks to the distraction provided by the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“; the problem, though, was that it all came tumbling down a mere three days later, for it was then that β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ rendezvoused with the group, having miraculously returned from the dead. A good omen, yes - except that the Minkan intelligence operative, having been captured (and, following the ministrations of β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, broken) not long after planetfall three weeks prior, was also accompanied by a veritable horde of β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ and β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“. Both Akiko and the heavy weapons operator, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, survived the ensuing chaos; unfortunately, they were the only ones to do so and now faced a choice, as the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ in the surrounding buildings converged on the duo en masse: either take a chance and run for it, risking death or worse in the process but also potentially surviving - or stay and fight until their last breath then self-destruct, guaranteeing both the security of the mission - information, after all, couldn't exactly be extracted from subatomic remains - as well as the deaths of at least a few enemies. Both plans were viable, both plans were suicidal, and both operatives were quite partial as to which plan they'd enable; Akiko - hating the very thought of acting impulsively, but even more determined to live until she'd achieved her goal - preferred the former, while β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ - desiring as much Kleos as possible before ascending to Heaven - refused to do anything but the latter.

Faced with the risk of yet another operative being compromised and with hostile forces rapidly closing in from all directions, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ Hayashi Akiko, after making one last attempt at reasoning with the team's de facto leader, β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, proceeded to β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“, only for a stray shell - an overshot fired by a β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“'s Minkan β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ at an enemy β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ as the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ mounted one final push - to impact 3.5187 meters away, thereby rendering the entire affair completely unnecessary and simultaneously destroying virtually any remaining evidence that the team had ever existed in the first place.

The fact that something had gone wrong became apparent to Akiko when she woke up inside a sterile hospital and, after glancing at the ceiling above, realized that she'd somehow ended up onboard a Zodiac-class Star Fortress due to the aforementioned ceiling's unique tile pattern - as her last memories had been of those of a routine soul transfer backup in preparation for her first mission in the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ system - of which she had no recollection of whatsoever.

Less than a minute later, a white-haired, grey-eyed, and rather petite Nekovalkryja clad in the black-paneled uniform of Intelligence entered the room, introduced herself as Nagase, and proceeded to give the just-over-eight-months-old operative an offer that she simply couldn't refuse: if Akiko worked for Nagase, the latter would promise to never reveal the former's secret. Confused (she, after all, was less than a year old, thus she couldn't even have any secrets), the younger of the two Nekos asked just what precisely the elder was referring to - to which said elder responded with a smile as she pulled out an Isolated Computer Pad and showed the room's other occupant a mission recording taken from a β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“'s helmet recorder.

Akiko's confusion rapidly transformed into a mounting sense of terror as she heard her voice - her own strained, pushed-far-past-its-limits voice - emanating from the Pad's stereo speakers.

Akiko's terror then transformed into all-out panic as she watched herself commit the unthinkable and willfully - willfully! - violate every single part of the code that defined her entire existence.

With her expression nearly as pale as the white sheets covering her trembling form, she proclaimed the recording to be false - because it couldn't possibly be real. Nagase countered with eight simple words: β€œWhat was your precise location one hour ago? ” When Akiko didn't respond, she added: β€œWas it was a planet in the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ system, perhaps?”

It couldn't possibly be real, yet Nagase's knowledge of something that highly classified meant that there was only one way for Akiko to be completely sure of the recording's veracity: to transfer it directly into her memory and experience it for herself.

Three minutes and fifteen seconds after downloading that recording, the Type 33 Nekovalkyrja (Eihei) known as Hayashi Akiko attempted to self-terminate - for it was true. She had indeed performed those terrible, terrible acts against a fellow member of Star Army Intelligence on her own volition and therefore was a traitor to herself, to her sisters, and to the Empire as a whole.

Her attempt, however, was a failure due to the intervention of Nagako Nagase, who then slapped the Eihei's tear-streaked face - hard - and reiterated her earlier statement: if Akiko worked for her, she'd take steps to ensure that the recording never came to the attention ofβ€¦β€œcertain parties.” Besides, she actually agreed with what the other Neko had done - and even understood the reasoning behind it.

Like a drowning kitten, Akiko clutched the lifeline that statement had extended to her with every ounce of her strength, using it - and the hours-long discussion with Nagase that followed - to save her from the vast, hungry currents of her despair. It was within that hospital room that Akiko not only discovered that she'd been right all along - that the Star Army had become imperfect from within - she also discovered the identity of the those responsible for this travesty: the various inferior species also within the Yamatai Star Empire's ranks.

It was an epiphany for the young operative - and by the time Nagase departed from the β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“β–“ Star Fortress' Hospital Center, Akiko would've gladly followed her from Heaven to Hell and back again.

Regretfully for the newly-restored Hayashi Akiko, the next several years provided very, very few opportunities for her to further her β€œmaster's” goals, due to the Executive Intelligence Directorate having reassigned her to Yamataian Operational Military Intelligence after deciding that she needed some time off from the field after such a traumatic experience. Although rather dull for one who'd trained for something much more β€œintensive,” such a posting did have one particularly beneficial side effect, as it granted Akiko access to a lot of data - and while most of it wasn't very high-level (due to her low rank), what was available only further cemented this Nekovalkyrja's views regarding the superiority of her kind, for she discovered that in almost every instance she could obtain complete records on, units composed solely of her sisters outperformed mixed units by a considerable margin…and that margin was even more pronounced in Basic. It was also a position she was extraordinarily good at, given her analytical nature - and while she didn't exactly mind receiving glowing performance reviews (and the promotions that accompanied them), by YE 39 even Akiko was beginning to wonder if she'd simply been β€œforgotten.”

Beginning, that is, until she received orders on the first day of Nigatsu that transferred her back into the Strategic Initiatives Network, promoted her all the way to SantΓ΄ Juni (of all things!), assigned her to a YSS Kaiyō, and even authorized an upgrade to the legendary Eihei variant. None of this, however, explained the gap in her memories that began the next day and lasted until the final days of Sangatsu, when she arrived on the YSS Kaiyō itself…

Hayashi Akiko is capable of performing all Star Army Common Tasks due to her training at Fort Victory and Black Sands.

Akiko has been trained in basic radio operation/procedures and can make transmissions to and receive transmissions from other characters through headsets, starships, powered armor, and shuttles in both combat and non-combat conditions. She is fluent in Trade and Yamataigo (ι‚ͺ馬台θͺž), thus she's able to speak and write both correctly and efficiently, write reports, fill forms, issue orders under fire, and so on; lastly, Akiko is adept at sending and receiving telepathic messages within the full range available to the NH-33 body.

This NH-33E Nekovalkyrja has also received supplemental training by SAINT so that she may employ alternative means of boosting or augmenting communication equipment for the purposes of bypassing an assortment of jamming methods in order to relay critical information.

Akiko has received hand-to-hand combat training, undergone a rigorous training program, and survived something vastly more difficult. She is skilled and experienced with combat in both null-gravity and Yamatai-like conditions, with and without weaponry such as energy pistols, bladed melee implements, batons, and powered armor, among other things; lastly, she's lethally proficient in the art of unobtrusively terminating others.

Technology Operation

Akiko is capable of operating any computer system that uses the Kessaku OS (found on all Star Army starships) with an expert level of competency and is proficient in entering and/or searching for information; furthermore, she - during her training - has learned how to covertly perform a variety of operations on the sundry of operating systems utilized by the multitude of factions nearby the Yamatai Star Empire, with some examples being the acquisition of protected information, network infiltration, hacking/counter-hacking, transmission interception, and (basic) viral sabotage.

Akiko, as part of her basic training, has been educated in basic mathematical concepts such as algebra and trigonometry.

Trained by Star Army Intelligence as an Intelligence Operative, Akiko is well-versed in the field of covert operations and in the concept of SERE4), particularly those relating to the areas of stealth, surveillance, and camoflauge; thus, she's highly adept at an assortment of clandestine activities, such as physical and/or electronic sabotage, tactical reconnaissance, espionage, area/asset denial, infiltration, and henceforth.

Survival & Military

Akiko has been taught the skills required to survive undetected in hostile environments for an extended duration of time without the use of technological aids while maintaining surveillance on an objective (be it mobile or stationary); a sampling of her expertise would be evident in her ability to construct and maintain shelter, evade detection through various means of camouflage, forage and/or hunt for food in an impact-less fashion, and (should the need arise) indirectly conduct guerrilla warfare against enemy forces via methods such as sabotage and asset denial.
