Ears: Human ears
Hair Color and Style: He has short brown hair with streaks of vibrant green on each side of his head.
Distinguishing Features: Makoto has the kanji character for “Makoto” tattooed on his back since he takes pride in its meaning.
Personality: Like his name, Makoto is a sincere and honest young man. He despises deception and believes that to defeat evil like the NMX, one must face it with a pure spirit.
Makoto used to believe firmly in the YSE but after his experiences in Task Force Lantern, he has become moody and sullen. His core beliefs have been shaken and he no longer knows what to believe. He knows that his personal honor is intact but part of him feels ashamed of the uniform he wears. Yet he cannot bring himself to resign while the security of the YSE has not yet been fully achieved.
Makoto is very fond of his family, especially doting on his younger sibling and cousins. The only conflict in his family has been with his elder sister, Sora, who thinks that Makoto is too foolish and naive. Despite their disagreements, the two do care for each other.
Socially, he used to be a friendly person but has since become more introspective and quiet. He is unsure of himself and lacks confidence in what he is doing.
Makoto also enjoys playing the guitar.
After graduating from high school, Makoto watched the war with the Mishhu unfold with high casualties on both sides. He wanted to help but felt that there were still things he needed to do first.
Many of his friends were going to university or careers. Only he and his friend, Saito Takamori, were uncertain about their futures. While Takamori tried his hand at acting, Makoto worked at a local forest park as a Forest Ranger and part time children's camp counselor. It was there that he learnt survival skills in the wild and basic first aid. He also learnt how to track poachers and guard against their tricks.
After the Battle of Yamatai, Makoto left his job as a Forest Ranger to enlist in the Star Army.
Makoto was sent to the training grounds of Fort Ready and graduated from the training program.
Following his graduation from Fort Ready, Makoto was assigned to the YSS Hokorimasu, flagship of the 8th Fleet. He participated in a single space action with Lion Squad. During that action, he got separated from the group and only belatedly rejoined them.
After this action, he put in for a transfer and was approved.
Makoto was transferred to the YSS Aeon, then in operations in the Siren System. He joined the Aeon's Star Infantry squad on Mayer Station. In this capacity, he acted as a medic, treating wounded prisoners and UOC personnel. Following this assignment, he was transferred to YSS Integrity.
After some time on the Integrity, Makoto was ordered to report to Task Force Lantern as a medic. Though surprised by the transfer as a medic, rather than an infantryman, Makoto obeyed orders. He was rather glum, though, bouncing around the Star Army for about a year and a half without a single promotion or commendation.
Makoto had thought he was going to be a simple medic for the line infantry squads and not the special Ryuusei unit, which reported directly to Morioka Naoko.
The unit's first mission was to board and seize terrorist leaders. However, the implications made were that other prisoners weren't necessary and that past operations had resulted in executions of terrorist personnel. Makoto took this badly and burst out, defending his position that it was illegal to shoot prisoners. This cast him in a bad light with the Ryuusei's members, save for his own squad leader. During the operation, Makoto's unit successfully managed to capture several IWL terrorists, though one was in a critical condition.
After delivering the prisoner to the medical bay, Makoto refused an order to return for debriefing and stayed to help the overworked medical staff. After hours of triage and medical work, Makoto was tired and flesh-sick, retiring to his quarters. Shore leave was soon granted though Makoto chose to stay aboard and rest up.
His plan, however, was cut short by an order to report for duty aboard Leo Station. His shore leave was revoked. On the way to his duty posting, Makoto was stopped by a little girl named Ginger who asked for his help. She didn't want to go to the police on Leo Station but wouldn't tell Makoto much. Ginger did, however, look as though she had been abused very badly. Before Makoto could get much out of the girl, she disappeared into an uncharted part of the station, fearing for her life. Makoto followed, calling for back up. Some members of the Ryuusei responded but their messages were garbled and unintelligible. Makoto's back up never arrived as he chased Ginger and her kidnappers through tunnels that had increased gravity.
During the chase, Makoto encountered two of the local police. A firefight broke out with Makoto being killed.
He was later resurrected through the use of ST technology and considered resigning from the Army before resigning from the Star Army and traveling to other parts of the galaxy, away from Yamatai.
Makoto is familiar with basic radio operation and procedures and can make transmissions to and receive transmissions from other characters through headsets, starships, power armor, and shuttles in both combat and non-combat conditions. Makoto is fluent in Nepleslian and Yamataian. He can speak and write both correctly and efficiently and can write reports, fill forms, issue orders under fire, etc.
When communicating to people, he is polite and friendly, engendering greater working relationships.
Makoto received hand-to-hand combat training, followed up with a rigorous training program. He is skilled and experienced in combat both in Yamatai-like conditions and in zero-gravity, with and without weapons. He is trained to use energy pistols, knives, rifles, and power armor.
Makoto is also highly adept at learning to use new weapons and new combat techniques. He particularly enjoys running urban combat scenarios.
Makoto received basic mathematics training, to including up to algebra and trigonometry.
Makoto is capable of operating any computer system that uses the Kessaku OS, found on all Star Army starships. He is proficient in entering and/or searching for information.
Makoto is highly adept at survival in a hostile environment. He is able to find food, make a fire, and track movements. Though by no means a master at it, Makoto is also able to move steathily should the need arise thanks to his training as a Forest Ranger.
Makoto has trained in battlefield first aid and treatment. As part of this training, he is able to identify wounds and perform triage. He is also able to stabilise most types of wounds received on the battlefields. As part of his desire to become a doctor, Makoto has been studying biology and medicine from very source he can find or purchase.
In addition, during his brief assignment to Task Force Lantern, Makoto spent several hours helping ship doctors triage and then treat patients, giving him valuable first hand experience.
Makoto is very good at playing the guitar and singing. He and his friends often made parodies of songs as they grew up, inserting their own lyrics in place of the original. Playing the guitar also helps Makoto slow down his pace and be more reflective.
He originally picked it up at the suggestion of one of his friends, who said that girls like guys who can play an instrument. While that line of thought proved wrong, Makoto continued practicing because his family kept encouraging it.
