Sutoikku Kaede is a very closed man, but not closed in the way of avoiding people. He has retained his well-to-do though down-to-planet attitude when it comes to idle conversation, but turns into a military powerhouse when the klaxons cry and the shots come in. Kaede generally is very calm mannered, sometimes seeming to be unphased by battles as if they were drills, but is truly just good at looking and sounding stoic. Once the smoke clears and he retires to private quarters, he'll relax into his worries.
Though worries still, he isn't broken in the mind when this happens. He has a high sense of protection for his ship and crew and will lay down his life to keep them alive and in fighting order, as all captains in his mind should be ready to do.
Born nine years before the formation of the Yamatai Star Empire, Kaede was born to a Uesureyan Admiral for a father and a slightly-politically minded mother. Kaede grew up going from station to station following in his father’s footsteps while his position and his mother’s political prowess guaranteed him an education. Throughout his schooling and late childhood and adolescence, Kaede began to look at his father's position with higher and higher regard. In late YE 06, Kaede and his father switched to Geshrin bodies, while his mother opted to stay human to maintain her status as a ‘neutral’ species. She did not completely believe in the body switching, but respected Kaede’s father’s wishes.
Two years later while returning home to Planet Yamatai, Kaede and his father learned of the The Great Plague of YE 08 and the Admiral Sutoikku ordered the ships under his command to return at best possible speeds. Kaede and his father arrived at their small home along a river in just enough time to ease Kaede’s mother to her final rest. Kaede’s mother’s love for Sakura trees gave Kaede the idea of asking his father to plant a small garden with his mother’s grave marker placed at the center tree. Kaede’s father agreed and set forth expanding their small home to be able to support the Sakura garden and the surviving members of the Sutoikku family. This was the beginning of what was going to eventually become the Sutoikku family estate.
Upon turning of minimum age, Kaede took after his father’s footsteps and joined the UE Spacy by running through an officer’s program. His career in the spacy started in YE 13. Kaede served in a very distant aspect during the Second Elysian War a year later, and served on one of the active starships in the invasion of the Heavens during the Third Elysian War in YE 16 as a bridge officer.
Three years later in YE 19, Kaede married a young woman named Takagi Kiyoko from the growing Yamatai Star Empire. This led to him gaining a dual citizenship for both the shrinking Uesureyan Star Empire and the growing Yamatai Star Empire. This came to a head in YE 21 when Kaede’s father resigned from his position in the UE Spacy at the time the Grand Star Army was founded. Kaede was assigned to the GSS Harukaze, a Yui-class Scout.
Kaede spent three years on the Harukaze, gaining the rank of Shosa by the outbreak of the Second Draconian War. His time spent during the Draconian War began to drag on his mind and Kaede was beginning to have thoughts on resigning as he was promoted to Taii before the end of the war. Though this did not come to pass.
In YE 25, Kaede was reassigned to the new Irim-class Heavy Gunship, YSS Sugoi as its commanding officer after passing a command review course and moving from a First Officer’s position to full Commanding Officer. Kaede commanded the Sugoi throughout the Fourth Elysian War and the First Misshuvurthyar War. In YE 27, Kaede and his crew switched to the new NH-22C body types to replace their aging Geshrins.
In YE 28, following the Grand Star Army’s reconstruction into the Star Army of Yamatai, the Sugoi was extensively damaged in a fleet action. The ship was deemed irreparable and the crew were transferred to Kaede’s new command, the Eikan-Class Heavy Cruiser YSS Tentō as well as Kaede receiving a promotion to Chusa.
YSS Tentō was the ship in which Kaede calls the beginning of his glory period. The ship served valiantly to the end of the First Mishhuvurthyar War in YE 30. The ship received battle honors for its service and was scheduled to be placed in drydock for an impending upgrade but the ship was pressed back into service in YE 32 with the outbreak of the Second Mishhuvurthyar War. Scrambled to orbit of Nataria in the opening weeks, the ship and the entirety of its crew were killed when the Tentō was heavily damaged and attempted to ram one of the NMX ships. The ship detonated upon making contact with the NMX battleship.
Kaede awoke from his Soul Transfer to a packet of information, a fresh uniform, and another bar on his sleeves. He was now a Taisa, promoted with the rest of his command staff from the Tentō for valiant sacrifice in the attempted defense of the Nataria system. Also in the packet of information was his new orders, and an extensive ship blueprint download for a new ship class, the Sharie-class Battleship. The name of the vessel that he was going to command was YSS Imperator, brand new and freshly crewed. His orders were to join the First Standard Fleet in defense of Yamatai, and Kaede donned his uniform and set out for his ship.
What Kaede did not learn until he was already underway to join the First Fleet, is that his wife had divorced him, thinking he had died permanently due to the lack of information given due to a logistical error. When Kaede sent a message, his wife had already left the Sutoikku estate with all of her belongings.
This hit Kaede hard, and to this day he feels resentment for not sending a message as soon as he had awoken. He swallowed his failures and gently attempted to forget that he was married, beginning to believe himself he sent out a final letter to her using what power he could through the Star Army declassified communications apologizing for his mistakes. When he got a response, she had already moved on according to the letter. Realizing his mistakes, Kaede moved on as well. Seeming unaffected by the time he had reached the First Fleet.
Kaede and the YSS Imperator served in many a combat action, including the Battle of Rabaal and the Battle of Yamatai. After sustaining battle damage during the defeat of the capital world, the Imperator was sent to dock with the First Fleet’s Iori to repair. During this repair, Kaede observed the limited ground engagements with the NMX planetary invaders clashing outside of Kyoto. Approximately twenty miles northeast of the city was the Sutoikku Estate, which escaped the battle unscathed.
While docked in orbit of Yamatai, Kaede received leave to return planetside. Taking his chance, Kaede returned to his family’s estate to relax for a period to ease his mind. During his leave, Kaede upgraded from his NH-22C body to a new Minkan body, taking the option to have SPINE attached. Kaede spent the remainder of YE 33 at home to ease his mind.
Taking a long step into YE 33, Kaede commanded the YSS Imperator through an occasional skirmish with NMX remnants, but spent the next two years in an idle defense of Yamatai with the rest of the First Fleet. Once the majority of the remnants were destroyed, the Taisa went through a period of near silence in his career.
In late YE 38, Kaede received orders that the YSS Imperator was changing fleets to join the First Expeditionary Fleet in a new division composed of veteran warships for the newly declared Kuvexian War. Kaede and the YSS Imperator made the transition to Hanako’s Star and docked with Gemini Station to wait for the rest of the division to make their transition.
In early YE 39, Kaede and his ship left with the infant Division Three towards coreward space to fight the Kuvexians and their allies, hopeful of not getting tied up in another hard and terrible conflict like the war that preceded this one.
