Darnell Carlisle in Roleplay

Darnell Carlisle (Daneru Kariaru, ダネルカリアル) is a player character played by Erus and is currently involved in the YSS Eucharis plot.

Physical Characteristics

Height: 5’ 5” (166 cm) Mass: 139 lbs (63 kg)

Build and Skin Color: Darnell Carlisle is short but well muscled. One can see why picking a fight with him back on Nepleslia was a bad idea, and he certainly does not look like a scientist. His skin color is slightly darker than the average, mostly due to exposure from Neplelslia’s environment, but despite this he is still fair.

Facial Features and Eye Color: Darnell’s face is occidental rather than oriental, which is more striking than any one feature about it. He has dull blue gray eyes which are not special in of themselves. His face comes together rather smoothly, which he feels was, at least in part, due to the tampering of those who made his Yamataian body.

Hair Color and Style: Darnell’s hair is a pure shade of black, kept clean and straight. It comes down to his neck, since he’s been growing it out ever since he came to Yamatai and frames his face. When he wants it out of his way, he simply puts it into a ponytail.

Distinguishing Features: Darnell’s eyes often seem unfocused, which leads to a general look that he is staring, either at a person or past them. He can force them to normality with effort, but they reappear under certain stimuli and do not go away until forced away again.

Psychological Characteristics

Personality: Unusually for a Nepleslian who has become a Yamataian, Darnell hasn’t abandoned his Nepleslian heritage and is still, culturally, Nepleslian. He knows about Yamataian culture, he can act in it and respect it, but he is still very much steeped in the ways of Nepleslia. He sees no incongruity with listening to a song like “I Sex’d the Empress” while serving her Empire. He still isn’t use to nature, or finding it beautiful. He loves machines and technology. Blood, gore, death, mutilation, torture, crime, violence, and corruption are all norms to him (though he did come to Yamatai to escape them). He believes one can have friendly fights. He sees things in personal, rather than societal, terms, as in personal gain and loss. At the same time, he obviously does not have the average Nepleslian’s dislike of Yamataians, and he understands that Yamataians do not share his views.

Darnell tends to be a bit on the blunt side, and he certainly doesn’t let social conventions get in the way of a job. He is fairly social, but he has to respect a person before their opinions matter to him. If people do their job well, he can forgive a lot, and if they do their job poorly, not a lot can make up for it. He wants fame, fortune, and so on, mostly because he sees that as a form of security. The rich aren’t likely to go hungry; the famous aren’t likely to be shot dead in the street. That doesn’t mean he wants to stop at subsistence level, though, but nor does it mean he will sacrifice all else in pursuit of it. He prefers to stay armed at all times, he doesn’t like turning his back to doors, he is generally the last to begin eating and drinking, he doesn’t leave his food or drink alone (or stops eating it if he does), and he can sleep most anywhere in most any position, though he prefers hard surfaces. He also has trouble falling and staying asleep at times, though he doesn’t feel tired as a result, but it certainly isn’t healthy.

Darnell is a hard worker and more intelligent than anyone (and that includes himself) gives him credit for. Of course, the amount of intelligence most people credit him with is pretty low. The fact he spoke exclusively in slang until going through Yamataian training didn’t help. Despite this, he wants to continue his education, seeing further education as a tool which he can use to build a better life. He also wants to advance in whatever structure he is in. Above all else, though, he wants a basic level of security, which he still feels he doesn’t have. He’s only two years apart from being starving and homeless on Nepleslia with all his friends dead.

Likes: Learning, observation, reading, new experiences, personal security, gain Dislikes: Talking about his past, discrimination against Nepleslians (more specifically himself) Goals: Finish his education, acclimate to and retain his new life, accumulate wealth, prestige, and power

History

Family (or Creators)

Kayla Carlisle

Pre-RP

Born on Nepleslia with a mother but no knowledge of who his father was, Darnell’s situation was complicated by his environment. His mother, while not a shining example of maternal caring, was decent enough, but the situation of where he lived was pretty poor. Unfortunately, his mother did not have the time to stay with him a lot, so he grew up partially on his own in a place filled with gang wars and violence. He adapted.

Though Darnell attended school, the teachers taught poorly and the students were often wild and ran rampant. Despite this, Darnell managed to pick up some of the lessons, though he didn’t exactly avoid the fights that came his way. Or picking a few himself. He, in effect, became a petty criminal, which, on Nepleslia was nothing. It was less than nothing in the part of Nepleslia he lived in. Despite this, he picked up some useful skills and learned how to scrape buy at even the youngest of ages.

As he grew older even slightly older, he was recruited into a gang. He ended up with a gang called the Birds of Prey. He was one of the low ranking members in the gang; mostly doing thieves work, picking locks, running cons, that sort of thing. He also helped them produce the drugs and other chemical substances the gang sold and used. He was actually quite good at it. He also fought in the various gang wars, though he was obviously out of his league at times he survived and learned. Eventually the Birds of Prey’s main enemy was the Muliers. The Birds of Prey won the war, and soon found itself fighting against a new gang, the Huntsmen. The Huntsmen eventually killed the leader of the Birds of Prey and took advantage of the infighting. Though they lost the war as well, the Birds of Prey splintered. With his gang breaking apart, Darnell almost lost his life in a gun battle.

After the gun battle, where he was officially identified as a victim of the gang war rather than a participant, he realized that the way he was living his life would be short and painful. A confrontation with his own mortality combined with the shattering of his normal setting changed him forever. After a stint where Darnell tried, and failed, to find a job, Darnell decided to flee Nepleslia. His mother hoped his life in Yamatai would be better, but would remain behind herself.

He ended up in Yamatai and applied for citizenship. Though he answered all the questions about his background truthfully, he avoided the spirit of some of the questions. For example, he had no criminal record, since he had never been arrested. That was true, but he had been a criminal. At any rate, he passed the tests and was granted citizenship. He got a Yamataian body, losing his mechanical enhancements but managed to get it in his old image, albeit shorter and without many of the imperfections of his last body. The reasoning was simple and twofold, he wanted to be seen as a Yamataian, and his old body wasn't in the best of condition so the idea of a new, superior body appealed to him (even if the idea of abandoning his old body caused some regret). He joined the Star Army, believing that that would be the one place where his skills could be made of service.

For reasons he never understood but was infinitely grateful for, the Star Army identified him as having potential of some kind and placed him in a course at Educational Facility 2 to provide the Star Army with crewmen who had scientific skills. He actually did fairly well at it, learning about various subjects. He was grateful for the training and realized, if he did have potential in this, getting the training through the Star Army would be easiest. Afterwards he could either find a job elsewhere or stay in the Star Army, but either way, he would be immensely more valuable personally.

Skills

Communications

Darnell is familiar with basic radio operation and procedures and can make transmissions to and receive transmissions from others through headsets, starships, power armor, and shuttles in both combat and non-combat conditions. Darnell is fluent in Nepleslian and Yamataian. He is also fluent in a lot of slang and street terms. He can speak and write both correctly and efficiently and can write reports, fill forms, issue orders under fire, etc, for both the military and scientific communities. He also knows a bit about linguistics, particularly xenolinguistics.

Fighting

Darnell received hand-to-hand combat training, followed up with a rigorous training program. He is skilled and experienced in combat both in Yamatai and Nepleslia-like conditions and in zero-gravity, with and without weapons. Weapons he is trained in include energy pistols, rifles, other guns, knives, grenades, and power armor. He is quite good with improvised weaponry and street weapons in addition. Also, years spent on Nepleslia have given him knowledge of urban and unconventional warfare, as well as how to brawl, as well as an intimate knowledge of various Nepleslian weapons.

Technology Operation

Darnell is capable of operating most any computer system, including the Kessaku OS. He is extremely proficient in their use and the use of technology in general, having grown up on Nepleslia. In fact, he can usually operate any gizmo or gadget well. He also knows about using the sensors and modifying programs so that they can record and manipulate the data as he needs to.

Mathematics

Darnell received basic mathematics training, to including up to algebra and trigonometry. He has also received courses in the various ways the universe works, represented in numbers, from basic theories all the way up to quantum physics and dimensional theory, as part of a program to provide Star Army scientists.

Biology

Darnell took biology classes back on Nepleslia, but he has also received training from the Star Army of Yamatai. This was a major part of his training, so he learned everything from genetics to cloning to bioengineering to zoology, with a special focus on xenobiology (since that is what a member of the Star Army would be most likely to run into).

Chemistry

Darnell took chemistry courses back on Nepleslia, and was involved in drug production for his gang. He has a good knowledge of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. He can analyze and synthesize substances and knows the basics of terraforming. He also knows how to make a dizzying array of substances, many of them illegal or weapons, though he hasn’t since he came to Yamatai.

Rogue

Darnell spent years on the poorer and more crime infested parts of Nepleslia, and as of such, knows how to pick locks, sneak around, pick pockets, blend into a city, buy and sell illegal goods, and how the underworld works generally. He can lie so well and calmly that it is undetectable even by lie detectors. He also knows about con work, sleight of hand, and how to avoid capture and the law, and smuggle. He knows about drugs and poisons that can be found on the streets. He can usually recognize criminals, or those who will take a bribe, as well. He isn't particularly good at seduction, but he can certainly recognize it and defend against it. He also knows how to get by electronic locks easily and without being traced.
