Pressurized Helium Reactor

Concept Data

This reactor was created to run on the byproduct of the Type 30 Link Siphon (Retconned) and Stellar Link Siphon (Retconned), namely helium stored in the Compressed Helium Container at pressures which are a significant fraction of those needed to initiate fusion into carbon.

Since these reactors run on byproduct, the fuel is quite cheap to obtain from MFY.

This design was later constructed for the Star Army of Yamatai, through a contract with Motoyoshi Fleet Yards.

Operation

In emergencies, standard fusion can be achieved by using hydrogen from matter collectors built into the ship.

Components

High Pressure Valves (2)

Valves made of reinforced Durandium allow the injection of Helium from the tanks and the removal of Carbon. The carbon can be ejected into space or stored for other uses.

Reinforced Durandium Forcefield Reactor

The reactor uses a spherical forcefield on its interior to compress the material, and squeeze as much energy as possible out of the material. Due to the higher pressures, it is possible to get more power from the smaller reactor.

The Core is hidden, as a sphere within the HEMR Collection System, and has emergency force fields in place should structural integrity fail. These can restrain the matter long enough for the material to be vented into space through the output valve.

Heat, Electromagnetic, and Radiation (HEMR) Collection System

Mounted on the surface of the Reinforced Durandium Forcefield Reactor, it converts heat, electromagnetic energy, and radioactivity into usable energy. Once it detects that the Reactor has been deactivated, the remainder of the energy siphoned from the helium is fed to recharge the Capacitor Array.

It appearance is a sphere of Durandum about 3 feet in radius; with coiled, 2 multi-layered tubing surrounding it. The sphere has special systems designed to convert heat, EM, and radioactive energy into usable electrical energy.

Capacitor Array

This is a simple capacitor array, which can start the Reactor should other Power Sources be unable to do so. It also allows one to switch Helium Tanks without a loss of power.

Compressed Helium Containers

Compressed Helium Container

These tanks store helium fuel at pressures which are a significant fraction of what is needed for them to undergo nuclear fusion into carbon. The are purchased from MFY, the Star Army of Yamatai, or a member government; and can be refilled for a small price.

Since MFY has Link Device technology in their Helium production system, it is possible to purchase a plan which automatically refills the Helium tanks remotely, even from Light Years away, without interrupting operations. This is usually a flat rate which takes into account average helium consumption.

Matter Collector Interface

Connects the valves to standard hydrogen gathering devices, allowing the introduction of fissile materials into the Reactor. This allows conventional fusion.

Benefits

  • The reactor is designed to compress already compressed material, giving a larger output in a smaller reactor size.
  • The fuel for the reactor is cheap to purchase, especially since it is actually byproduct.
  • Refueling can be done remotely by a Link Device-based Link Siphon, without any connections to the ship, and from light years away.
  • It is less volatile than antimatter to utilize, and has more output than magnetic acceleration fusion.

Retcon Notes

All technologies connected to the Type 30 Link Siphon (Retconned) and the Stellar Link Siphon (Retconned) were retconned.
