The first rank in the Nachrichtendienst is the unteragens. At this point, the agent is randomly placed into either a light field cell (an intelligence gathering group in relatively little danger) or an analysis group to learn the ropes. During this point, it isn't uncommon for the unteragens to be rotated into either position.

After spending at least one tour in both fields, the unteragens is promoted to Agens rank.
