Originally designed to give Abwehran Light Infantry more versatility in the field, the MDR-08 was designed in conjunction with the Jäger Heavy Infantry Armor during the fourth quarter of AF 260 YE 34.

The MDR-06 Field Rifle was considered a resounding success with its deployment in the Second Quarter of AF 260 (YE 32), but even then it had its limitations. One of the main concerns was its rigid nature, since it could only fire one type of round at a time. Some soldiers even began to tape their magazines together in order to use two different types of rounds quickly an efficiently. The need for versatility came about when applying the MDR-06 to Powered Armor. In fact, unlike the old Beschützer Series Mass-Driver Rifle, the MDR-06 Field Rifle couldn't be used by the Dämon Infantry Power Armor.

The MDR-08 Battle Rifle solved both issues by removing the trigger guard and strengthening the frame of a normal Abwehran rifle as well as decreasing the size of the round to allow for two magazines to be installed at once. To keep the same damage potential, muzzle velocity has been increased beyond that of the MDR-06 Field Rifle to compensate.

A weapon that's more slender than the MDR-06 Field Rifle, the MDR-08 Battle Rifle is a streamlined design where the barrel is mostly covered except for the last several centimeters of it. With a retractable stock and a larger pistol grip that its less versatile predecessor, the MDR-08's lack of trigger guard enables it to be used by Powered Armor. In the rear part of the firing assembly, a small screen connected to the battery and magazines keeps track of the charge and ammunition capacity.
