Kavorây Ruoka (Oath to House)

This page describes one of the Devotopai (Rituals) of the Poku Saeruo Degonjo.

The Kavorây Ruoka is the ritual by which a Poku'vonai is made a member of a Ruoka (House). Normally used when a person marries into a Rouka from another one. But can also be used when a person is recruited or seeks admission into a Rouka. The ritual is the means that the transition is made perfect.

The ritual is very simple, the person to join the Rouka enters the meeting place for that Rouka. At the start of the ritual the individual enters wearing their Umatsa (robe) from their old Rouka. A Kyn Lumu'a stands before the individual and asks if they are prepared to several their kavoráy (oath) to their old Rouka. The individual then removes their Umatsa and hands it to the Kyn Lumu'a.

The individual then turns to face the Ta'a (speaker) of the Rouka they stand with their arms stretched out, and their teeth bared. They then ask the Ta'a to join. The Ta'a then walks down and holds out a dagger with the crest of the Rouka. The Ta'a asks if the individual is ready to make the kavoráy. The Ta'a holds the tip of the dagger over the person's heart. The Kyn Lumu'a recites the oath of loyalty and fealty, while the supplicant repeats it. After the oath is said the Ta'a lightly cuts the supplicant and with the blooded tip of the dagger makes a similar cut on their hand. After the mixing of blood the Ta'a motions for two members of bring the supplicant their new umatsa. Once the person has put it on, the Ta'a presents them to those present as a member of the Rouka.
