Utility control rooms have been designed to be used by a crew of a ship or installation to serve as a user interface point to allow for ship utilities to be reviewed, manipulated, repaired, activated, or deactivated… among other functions. Utility control rooms offer access to utilities through the use of a secured interface console, and a utility line access hatch which is also locked and secured. Utility control rooms are usually rather damp, musky smelling, and have a distinctive 'humming' sound within the room which can be attributed to the high levels of electrical energy which traverses through the utility lines which the room monitors. Utility control rooms often have an airlock style hatch as their primary access point, this hatch is usually locked until the lock is opened by authorized personnel.
