Journeymen are small teams of Scientific Studies Service (SSS) Tansaku personnel. These teams are highly trained specialists who augment the crew of an SSS starship or starbase. The YSS Tensai a Tansaku-class Science Vessel was built to fully test the concept in the field.

In YE 34 the SSS realized that its fleet of Tansaku were verging on overcommitment. So they looked for a smaller more economical means of moving their people from one site to another and to be able to deliver supplies and personnel to smaller locations. To this end the SSS purchased a number of Ge-E1-1a - Tenba-Class Transporter as the primary means of transit for the Journeymen. Journeymen are an extension of the Scientific Studies Service (SSS) - Tanken (Tansaku)

The Journeymen receive training at the Daichi Campus. Qualified recruits undergo a month long training program to familiarize them with SSS equipment and procedures.

Any citizen of the Yamatai Star Empire can apply for employment in expeditionary division of the (SSS). Academy graduates, and honorably discharged Star Army of Yamatai personnel are granted priority consideration. However, actual placement requires that the candidate has the prerequisite skills for the position.

Employment with the Scientific Studies Service (SSS) is done by contractual agreements in two, four and six year intervals.

The starting grade for Journeymen is GS-05, higher grades may be awarded based on qualifications.
