XR-8 Kuiper Belt

The mighty YSS Teisenjou was in a distant orbit at the very fringes of the XR-8 system. The distant primary was occluded by the dust of two asteroid fields and the mess of the system's Kuiper belt. The distant orbit was so slow, it seemed as if the Tanya-class Expedition Ship wasn't even moving. The starry background with the remote sun seemed to hang in stasis, giving no differentiation of night and day to the crew and other residents of the flagship. They had only the light cycle belowdecks, work periods synced to Yamataian days, with which to differentiate the time.

Araya Mikasa loved all sports.

While aerial football was her favorite, playing it on the Teisenjou was impossible. Nevertheless, that still left many other sports which were somewhat popular and could be played within the multipurpose rooms or the arboretum. Volleyball was one of them, which Mikasa found herself occupied with after finding an ongoing game in one of the multipurpose rooms. The blonde-haired Nekovalkyrja had joined as soon as she arrived and within moments, the game was live.

In the context of a pickup game, Mikasa’s diminutive stature was of little issue and at times, she was able to make up the difference with her Nekovalkyrja athleticism, leveraging powerful, explosive jumps to spike the ball over the net.

And yet, the game was close. Very close. Mikasa took a brief look at the volumetric scoreboard—17-18, in favor of the opposing team.

The opposing team was set to serve for the next rally. The opposing server—a statuesque Minkan male, did so with a powerful jump serve, sending the ball flying with breakneck speed almost straight towards her. Mikasa launched herself into a sprint towards where she anticipated the ball might land, before throwing her body into a leaping dive to hit the ball upward just before it would have struck the ground.

Grunting, Mikasa picked herself up and ran back to her position. However, she had already hit the ball once. Now, it was up to the other players on her team to make the play and send the ball back over the net within two touches, in order to continue the rally!
