Senate: Defeated Abolish the Senate

Fred

Retired Staff
"When the Senate becomes an embrassment of itself, going to the point of having the temerity of refusing to acknowledge its dominant members, the nekovalkyrja, as a species... then I declare that its usefulness has obviously come to an end.

Empress Himiko, I point out that these people know more about squabbling than about how to rule themselves. As ruling clan, with you at our head, this is our task. But there is no point in putting power in freedom of speech if what results from it is such foolishness.

The Senate was abolished in the past, but then generously reinstated. Twice in my memory. There were compelling reasons for its abolishment then, and I feel they have not changed. I feel that the generosity that was extended to allow such voice to be heard has again grown undeserved.

I would advice that the role the Senate fulfills be moved to the Imperial Court. There, representatives could be appointed to present the thoughts of the Yamataian people, for you to purview and measure when faced with dilemmas, or to ratify any rulings that would further define and refine our Empire.

I ask this as a person disheartened to save her home only to see it extend so little respect for those whom put themselves in the line of danger to spare them those pains.

I ask for justice. I ask for respect we, your subjects, your sisters, are due."

The former Empress had halted just short of the door, not turning around to even see who spoke the words that she had hoped to hear. "I support this motion of no confidence in the Senate." She made sure she spoke loud enough to see to it that it was heard. It seemed to be a trend, the only two times in her entire career she had set foot in that chamber it had lead to this.

I cannot, as a citizen of this empire, support such a proposal. Although my opinions are of just one citizen, I am against any further consolidation of power in this nation.

Right now, Yamatai is trying to make amends for the past, trying to seek a new place as a righteous and just nation. I believe that allowing its people to have direct influence on measures that shape its nation's future is an essential step towards the worldliness required to make these aspirations a reality.

To place all that responsibility within the confines of one person's vision, no matter how intelligent and blessed that person may be, is a form of dictatorship which endangers our progressiveness.

The squabbles are painful but necessary... and although I do not share your views of perceived disrespect towards those Nekovalkyrja who sacrifice so much for our nation, I still feel that they should have a right to have such opinions.

For if we cannot stomach harsh words, how can we find the conviction to make our dreams of future reconciliation a reality?

I do not support this motion.

"No."

"No no no no no, no, no no. No."

The senator drew on a sign in permanent marker and whiteboard and set it out on the front of her podium.

"Just, no."

Senator A. Winsbury rubbed his temples after hearing the long-winded diatribe. Didn't this sort of speech happen a couple of years back, or does it happen so often that I'm numb to it?

Well, he was a Nepleslian born man who took his family to Yamatai shortly after the Nepleslian rebellion several years ago. He already felt as though he betrayed his own race for the sake of his career and his family, and now he was being burnt by it.

He simply rolled his eyes as it went on, and waited for the others to make a vote for or against before he did. If he bit the hand that fed him immediately, he'd get nowhere, or worse still, he would fade back into having a council seat for a community rather than this high-ranking job.

I'd be a little more sympathetic if there weren't -trillions- of you running around and falling off an assembly line. He contemplated bitterly as he took a drink, The war's winding down and you don't know what to do with yourselves now that you've run out of enemies to fight.

"No." Senator A. Winsbury sighed, clearly aggrieved.

"Who says you get to vote anymore?

I am hardly asking for your permission! Either the Empress sees your demerit and is moved to act, or feels compelled to uphold the Constitution she's already ratified for you even though it's proven so obviously disruptive thus far.

The Senate was a fair idea until it allowed a bunch of fools to come together and threaten to run the Empire into the ground. Taisho Yui gave me a fairly simple assignment: fight hard to save the Empire. I am. From you nay-sayers.

You sowed the wind, and now you may just reap the whirlwind."

Katsuko turned around fully then and headed back to the place she had been before. "No confidence means you can vote until you run yourselves down to exhaustion. Protest what you will. The request isn't up to you. It is up to the Empress. It is up to Imperial mandate..." She waited, It was time to see Yamatai become an Empire again.

To: The Imperial Senate
From: Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Himiko I of Yamatai

We thank you for your support and trust in our Imperial Reign. While it is my duty to serve as the embodied will of the State of the Yamatai Star Empire, my best guide is the will of the people of Yamatai, who are the senators. When I signed our constitution into law, I did so because I believed in it and I still believe in it and in you, the senate. I urge you to be patient and cooperative with one another and to serve in a matter that reflects honor and credit upon our nation and maintains its place as the greatest in our universe.

Perhaps, if there is a lack of confidence in the representation, that we should try to find some new representation rather than abolish the system that Himiko-dono believes in. We should have faith.
