RP: YSS Aeon Crew Interviews

Kim Eun-Kyung

Katae sat in the temporary office that she had requested. It was the standard non-descript office that was functional, but in an impersonal manner. Could they make these offices more unattractive? Would a bit of color or even a picture be too much to ask. she thought missing her office on the Aeon. The only reason she chose it because it was the only one available that afforded a view of the squadron.

She stood looking out the window at the Aeon. A volumetric display of the Ikoi and the squadron surrounding it floated over the table. Katae took note of the time and sat back at the desk/table and started reviewing the personnel report again.

Eun-Kyung doubled back as the communicator beeped, signaling that she had gone too far along Level 8. Pushing back through the flow of people - an easier task now that she had secured her bags in a locker - she eventually ducked into a side hallway, the correct one according to the computer.

Indeed, a moment later she came to a halt outside of the indicated office, 1-3-29. She paused for a moment, straightening her uniform, before rapping twice on the door.

Katae looked up from the paperwork, took a sip from the tepid cup of what passed for coffee. Gah, I'd kill right now for a cup of Sachi's coffee. She put the cup down, pushed her errant brown strand of hair back into place. In a clear voice she called out "Enter."

Sucking in a deep breath, Eun-Kyung reached out and depressed the admittance key. The door slid open with a quiet "whoosh" and she stepped in, bracing to attention as the door slid shut behind her. "Ma'am, Kim Eun-Kyung Shoi Kohosei reporting as ordered, ma'am."

Katae took a moment to scrutinize the young lady before her. She let her bright green eyes scan the Shoi Kohosei. Taking note that the midshipman had obviously taken time to ensure her uniform was not askew after navigating the Zodiac concourses. She glanced down at the paperwork again, and then back ad Eun-Kyung. "Have a seat Kohosei."

Swallowing her nervousness, Eun-Kyung sat, but remained very stiff. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but rather the result of years of programmed behavior from Academy life. So too was her silence; she was a lowly mid and she knew better than to interrupt the officer in front of her.

After allowing a moment of silence Katae "At ease midshipman, this is an interview, not a board of inquiry." She took another sip of the vile coffee, grimacing as she did. Next interview I'm having Sachi bring me a pot of decent coffee. She promptly disposed of the cup of offending liquid into the trash. "So Kim Kohosei, let's start with a simple question. Why are you here?"

Eun-Kyung did her best to relax, but she couldn’t help feeling a bit tense, especially given the first question. “Umm… Well, ma’am, I am here for my midshipman cruise. I applied for deployment with the First Expeditionary Fleet and was told the YSS Aeon was accepting new personnel.” She tried to answer as formally as possible, but couldn’t help some of her confusion slip through.

Katae looked down at the performance report before her, Good, a clear, concise answer to the question, without rhetoric. She looked up. "Why did you join the service?"

Eun-Kyung felt her face heat up a little, despite herself. That was a question she hadn’t been asked in several years and she had been unprepared to answer it. As such, forthrightness seemed the best policy. “To be frank, ma’am, I had been attracted to the idea of working in space since my elder brother left home to become a Spacer years ago. My parents refused to let me join a shipping corporation, so the Star Army presented itself as the obvious choice.”

Katae noted the young woman's reaction. Obviously a sensitive subject. "Okay, that is why you joined... let me rephrase, what does it mean to be in that uniform.?"

“Ah,” uttered Eun-Kyung. That question was much easier to answer, as she had been answering it to all sorts of people ever since she entered the Academy. “Ma’am, being in this uniform represents my responsibility to my colleagues in the Star Army and to the Empire as a whole.” The answer was a little safe, but nearly exactly reproduced her lessons in the Academy.

Katae could almost hear the sound of her instructor from all the years past as the young Yamataian answered. She stood up and walked over to the window. "Come over here and look out the window at the Aeon, Integrity, Succubus, and Ouroboros. Tell me what you see."

Standing to follow the Taii to the window, Eun-Kyung spent a moment examining the ships. “Ma’am, that is the Aeon and the rest of the Seventh Squadron, correct? There were many rumors spreading during transit to here, but I take it the ones about the Seventh seeing action were right?”

Katae paused for a moment. "Yes, Kohosei, the Seventh was part of the defense of UX-25." Defense, more like a struggle to survive. she thought briefly. "Let me tell you what I see when I look out there. I see four vessels of the Star Army that put themselves in harms way, to defend other soldiers, and civilians. Four vessels that paid with their dearest coin. The squadron suffered twelve dead, seventeen wounded. So when I ask what it means to be in the uniform, I am asking are you ready to fill their shoes. Are you ready to put yourself in harms way, to save the lives of your crew, and even people you may not even know. Because that is what it means to be in that Uniform."

Eun-Kyung stood silently for a moment, continuing to stare out at the ships. “Ma’am, I don’t think there’s any real way for me to know that. The instructors at the Academy do the best they can to prepare us, but I don’t think anyone can truly claim they come out prepared to do whatever is required.”

She looked down from the view-port before finally bringing her gaze back up to the officer’s. “I suppose, ma’am, that the purpose of this interview is for you to answer that question for me. The best I can do is reassure you that I have willingly and gladly volunteered for this duty and I am fully prepared to do my best to find out for myself.”

Katae smiled at the midshipman. "And that Kim Kohosei, is the correct answer. If you had told me that you were ready right now. I would probably have you sent for a psych evaluation. Truth be told no one is sure until they face that moment." She extended her hand to the midshipman. "You'll do. Welcome aboard the Aeon."

Eun-Kyung took the proffered hand in surprise. “Thank you, ma’am,” she said with a slight smile. “It’s an honor, ma’am.”

Katae looked around feeling the depressing demeanor of the room. "Let's get out of this office. I need a decent cup of coffee, and we can talk more over a cup in a more relaxed environment."

“Ah, yes, ma’am,” replied Eun-Kyung. She stepped over to the hatch, waiting for the Taii. Hitting the activation key she stepped aside. “After you, ma’am.”

Katae picked up the folder from the desk, and walked out the door. Eternity please authorize Kim Shoi Kohosei aboard the Aeon, and notify me when the Ikoi is ready to start the repairs. she transmitted to the MEGAMI. "There is a small coffee shop just a short walk from here." Katae said to Eun-Kyung.

"Please, lead on, ma'am," replied Eun-Kyung, following the Taii. She certainly hadn't noticed any shops on the way, but that was only to be expected given the alacrity with which she had made her way to the office for the interview.

Katae made her way out to the main concourse, and after briefly checking her bearings stepped onto the slide walk, moving further out in the section. It only took about three minutes on the moving surface for the shop to appear ahead. "This is where we get off Midshipman." she said as she deftly stepped off the walk.

Eun-Kyung watched her feet carefully at the termination of the slidewalk, but that didn’t stop her foot from catching on the lip. Her arms splayed out for one wild moment as she fought to regain balance before she finally straightened up again. She sped forward to catch up with the Taii, looking down to hide her face from the inevitable staring faces. “Apologies, ma’am” she said, her face reddening further still.

Katae chuckled and smiled at Kim, "No need to apologize Midshipman. You are neither the first nor last person to have that problem getting off the slide walks. I swear they should have a training session just to deal with that." Katae walked into the coffee shop and spotted an empty table on the left side. She took the seat against the wall and motioned to for Eun-Kyung to take the seat opposite.

“Err, yes, ma’am. I mean, sorry ma’am” Though seemingly impossible, Eun-Kyung reddened a little more. I am making a complete ass of myself! screamed her internal Academy instructor. The thought that her subconscious had internalized the traits of one of those hideously sadistic folk amused her a little, enough at least that she grinned as she eased into the seat.

A Yamataian waitress arrived just after Eun-Kyung sat, she pushed an errant strand of hair from her face, "What can I get you ladies?" she inquired. Katae looked up at the woman and replied. "I will have large coffee, almond roast, with cream and two sugars. Thank you." "Certainly ma'am, and what about you honey?" She asked with a smile looking at Eun-Kyung.

“I’ll just have water, thank you,” replied Eun-Kyung. With a regimen of daily PT at the Academy still quite recent, the impulse to hydrate was still high on her internal checklist. She had known the day was coming, but the thought of not making her normal pre-dawn run each morning was a little jarring.

"Sure thing, I'll get those right away." the waitress said and walked off. Katae looked at Eun-Kyung. "So Midshipman, to start I will probably have you on a rotating duty on the bridge. That will give you a chance to get well rounded on the stations. But I will expect you to also spend some time familiarizing yourself with the Aeon's systems."

“Understood, ma’am,” Eun-Kyung said with a nod. “Are there substantial differences between the Aeon and the standard Plumeria-class specs we studied? I did notice some superficial differences earlier.”

"The Aeon was recently upgraded before the battle of UX-25 to the 1D variant which added additional weaponry, and extra STL engines for maneuvering. She was built with an additional sensor because she was originally a 1C. I plan on making some internal changes as a result of the battle." Katae paused for a moment, "I have already notified Eternity the ship's MEGAMI that you are authorized access."

“Thank you, ma’am,” Pausing for a moment to glance around the charming little cafe, Eun-Kyung turned back to the Taii. “Do you want me to move aboard right away or are the refits too substantial?”

"Hmm.." Katae pondered the Midshipman's question. "I would suggest that for now you take one of the visitor quarters on the Ikoi. The rest of the crew will be staying there for the repairs and refit. Once the refit is done you can choose a cabin to stay in."

The waitress arrived at the moment and placed their order on the table. Katae looked at the waitress, "I'll take the check." The waitress handed her the ticket, "enjoy your coffee."

"So, what are you long term goals?" Katae said, then took a sip of her coffee. Ahh, now that is coffee.

Eun-Kyung displayed her tactical sense as she used the freshly arrived glass of water to cover her fast thinking. As the Taii had already displayed rather substantial insight, the idea of feeding her another straight line from a recruiting manual seemed like a poor idea. So, steeling herself, she opened her mouth to speak.
“To be honest, ma’am, I cannot say I have any long term plans. I joined up hoping that someday I would cross paths with my brother, but that’s hardly my career focus. To be honest, ma’am, I feel like this cruise might help refine some of my thoughts about the future.”

Katae thought. "That's fair enough. I can not exactly say what our mission will be. We are an exploration ship, and I hope that the Aeon will remain such. Even with the war we need to expand our known territories. We will have to keep an eye out for the Mishhu; Usaga-Hei the ship's Engineer is working on a proposal that will hopefully assist with that, and it will most likely affect our mission." Ise-Taii, the Ikoi is ready to receive the Aeon. Eternity informed the captain. "It appears that the ship is getting ready to enter the Ikoi, so I will let you go and get settled as there are matters I need to discuss with the technicians. If you have any questions Midshipman my door is always open."

"I appreciate it, ma'am," said Eun-Kyung, with a professional nod and close-lipped smile. "As I said before, it's an honor to be coming aboard, ma'am."

Toranaga Siyun

Toranaga glanced at the message on his communicator. He felt tired, perhaps more so mentally then physically after such a long trip. The recent whispers about the Ketsurui blockade and destruction of Nataria fleet depot did little to ease his anxiety. It felt only natural to have a new war start on eve on his interview, a bad omen.

Without delay he grabbed his baggage and made his way to one of the moving sidewalks. Virgo felt much more massive from the interior then it did when he observed it as his transported moved in to dock. It’s massive, he mused tiredly. A large overhead screen displayed a map of the fortress; he studied it and noted his destination on the map. It was a long walk, even with the moving sidewalks, but he eventually made it to Ise-Taii’s without delay.

Taking in a deep breath he pressed the office’s chime.

Katae sat in the temporary office she had requested waiting for the newest candidate for the Aeon. She had a picture of ice water and half full glass of water next to the folder she was reading. She closed the folder, and pressed the button to open the door. "Come in." She said in her command voice.

Toranaga took in another deep breath, closed his eyes, and then exhaled. Opening his eyes he pushed the anxiety away and entered the office. As soon as he stepped inside he bowed “Toranaga-Santô Hei reporting for interview as ordered.”

Katae looked at the Yamataian male with an impassive look, Was I ever that young? she thought. "At ease, Toranaga-Hei, please be seated." she said indicating the chair in front of her.

I can’t be timid, he mentally reminded himself. With a quick nod he followed her direction and took a seat.

Katae cleared her voice, "Now, let's get started. I have reviewed your service brief, and I have a few questions. I'm also sure that you may have a few questions for me as well." Ise paused to take a sip of her water. "Let's start with one of the most important questions. Why did you enlist in the Star Army of Yamatai? And what do you believe you have to contribute to my ship Santô Hei?"

One step at a time. “I needed the money.” A simple and honest answer “I’m sure that’s not the common answer but it’s the truth. My parents died two years ago and was very little left after we paid off family loans. I have two younger siblings left in my care and this is the only thing I can do, do not be mistaken however, I am dedicated. I am knowledgeable in several scientific fields and my academic record prior to my enlistment is nearly flawless.”

He wondered if he was being too honest but it was too late to rethink it “I have read up on the Aeon and its mission details. I know I can be asset to you and the Aeon. Forgive my bluntness Ise-Taii.”

Ise looked at the dossier in front of her. "You are raising your younger siblings, why then did you not apply for child support. The Star Army compensates members who have children even if they are their siblings. That would put your salary at 70 KS a week instead of 50. As for being blunt, I appreciate candor and direct as long as it is respectful." Etenity, please update Toranaga-Hei's pay status to reflect two dependent children. "I presume you will want the Star Army Insurance policy in case something should happen to you. It’s a sensible precaution, and it is free."

Toranaga nodded feeling relieved. “Yes, I agree, it would be wise. Thank you Ise-Taii.” This was easier then he expected, the Taii was certainty not a daunting personality.

"I am concerned about one detail in your record. Your... medical incident. I need to know, do you believe that you can take the pressure of service? I can not afford to have a member of my crew on the bridge fall apart at a critical moment."

There it is. Toranaga expected that question and he was more then ready to meet it “I am competent mentally. That incident was a young, ignorant boy, who thought the universe had collapsed upon him. I am no longer a boy, and certainly no longer ignorant about the universe. I assure you the record prior to my enlistment is nearly flawless.
that I am ready for the stresses of duty and I have been evaluated by a star forces psychologist and was met with satisfactory approval in terms of my mental status.”

Katae leaned slightly back in her chair, and steepled her fingers while she thought. Green, intelligent, but... She then sat up straight and looked Siyun in the eye, with a cold gaze. "Okay Toranaga-Hei, you have skills that the Aeon can use. So I am prepared to to take a chance on you. But remember this, the safety of my crew and ship come first. If you should have a relapse; I will personally, lock you in a holding cell in the Medbay, until we get to a star base and then throw you bodily off my ship. Are we clear?"

“I cannot afford to have a relapse Ise-Taii” It was true, Toranaga needed this, and his sisters needed this. Maybe the life he expected to live was over but theirs wasn’t “you are very clear and I would expect it no other way.”

"Very good, we will speak of this matter no more. I have given some thought to your posting on the ship. I'm putting you at the sensor station on the bridge. Which also means you will need to learn to handle the Aeon's secondary weapons. I don't think that will be a problem do you?"

Toranaga shook his head “no, it will not be a problem.” He spent most of the trip to Virgo studying the Plumeria class systems and he was confident he could operate any of them efficiently. This was also probably one of the reasons he felt mentally exhausted, the class were both advanced and complicated.

"Good, you will of course be expected to fulfill the science requirements of any away teams as well. There are two other people to help with Science. Kahen-Nitô Juni the night shift Science officer, and we have a civilian, Josea Gustov, from the Scientific Studies Service as well. Do you have any questions for me Toranaga-Hei?" Katae said closing his folder.

“I will gracious accept their counsel.” Toranaga answered sincerely. He considered he last question for a few seconds before shaking his head “no questions presently Ise-Taii.”

"Very well, please remember that my door is always open to my crew, so if you do, please feel free to contact me. The Aeon is currently undergoing extensive repairs after the incident at UX-25, so we are currently staying aboard the Ikoi-Kyoten. Your communicator will provide you with directions to the Ikoi. Dang Mei - Nitô Juni is responsible for the services there, so see her for your cabin assignment. The rest of the crew is already there; take an opportunity to get to know them. Once the ship is repaired, we will move back aboard and you can choose a cabin then." Katae then stood and held out her hand, "Welcome aboard the Aeon Toranaga-Hei."

“I will see immediately” standing up Toranaga accepted the Taii’s hand. Soft, he thought, and lowered his head in a bow “I am honored.”

Haruhi

Katae looked up when the computer signaled her that her latest potential crew member had arrived on station. This Haruhi may come in extremely useful in the foreseeable future. War always makes supply lines tenuous at best. she thought. She scanned the service report for Haruhi, Interesting; promoted to officer in the field, and then resigned her commission. she quickly pulled up a volumetric display to check on the status of the Aeon.

The message received as Haruhi completed her journey to Virgo Station was short and to the point: haul arse to the designated location before the designated time to get measured up by the women she had flown halfway across Yamatai space to meet. A quick mental ping to the station's PANTIES and an updated map and local time floated into her head, checking them against each other and the route she would have to take confirmed that she had enough time not to have to rush but not enough time that she could afford to dawdle, the sort of well-timed situation that indicated that the Taii was most likely on the ball. Either that or she had a good secretary.

The Neko set out at a pace that would land her in front of the Taii's office with a few minutes leeway for safety's sake telepathically pushing queries into PANTIES as she went, pulling together a basic overview of the situations of the station and the myriad of ships that currently birthed there. She was in largely unfamiliar territory here - though it was still the same Star Army, transitioning between fleets meant new faces she would have to deal with, new contacts to make and new supply issues to weave around, and this station and those ships were all important pieces of the puzzle now around her.

Katae was tracking the Juni's progress through the station. Easy enough to do since the Juni was frequently accessing the station network. She was impressed at how quickly the Juni was able to find her way on a completely unfamiliar station. When she saw her approaching the door, rather than have her wait, she went ahead and opened the door. "Enter Haruhi-Santô Juni, I've been expecting you."

Haruhi blinked once as the door opened before her the Taii must have been watching her then entered the office, bowing the appropriate amount due an officer of Katae's rank. She resisted the urge to make a sarcastic remark of course the Taii had been expecting her, she was the one who had sent the message after all and replied with a safer, blander “Thank you, Katae-Taii,” before she straightened herself up and regarded the captain with as neutral an expression as she could manage. The slight Neko used these first few seconds of meeting to try and gauge an initial impression of the woman across from her, seeking out the things that words and numbers on a public profile could not tell her.

Katae observed the Neko, a frown appeared briefly on her forehead. She dismissed the display of the Aeon. "That would be be Ise-Taii, Juni. You have an interesting service record." She said tapping the folder. "Your skills are ones that I foresee a need for with the recent turn of events. And you appear to have a talent for finding your way around new places. I do of course have a few questions that I require answers before I can make a final decision on your placement. Let's start with why did you resign your commission after leaving the YSS Yu-gumo?"

“My mistake, Taii,” Haruhi said easily, not missing the momentary frown; irked, but not enough to dwell on it past a short rebuke about as satisfactory a reaction as could be expected. She took aboard the Taii's comments wordlessly, before tackling her question. “I'm not interested in command track,” she said bluntly, “if I was, I would have already been wearing white at the time. I'm an armourer at heart, and while I am given a choice that will always be what I return to.”

"Well, that should not be a problem. I am sure you recall how bad the supply situation was during the previous war with the Mishhu. I am looking for a person who can get me the supplies my ship needs, even if that means using 'creative' methods. Do you have a problem with that Haruhi?"

“It's not looking to be any prettier this time around, from what I hear and have gathered,”Haruhi replied, though the Taii's last comment split her face into a grin that was all teeth. “No problem at all, Ise-Taii... though I think this may be the first time someone has suggested so quickly that I allow myself to work outside of the norm.”

"I believe in being direct and prepared for all eventualities. We are cut off from the Ketsurui Military Sector, and the numbers of ships we saw there leave me with no other opinion that it will be awhile before we will see anything coming from there. With reports of fighting in multiple fronts, supplies will run short. And supply problems for a fighting ship, can mean the difference between winning and losing. I do not like to lose Haruhi-Juni." The Taii said, with all trace of emotion vanishing from her face. After a pause, Katae's face relaxed and she gave a wry smile. "But we are not there yet, so for the time being, let's use normal supply channels. In addition to your duties as supply person, I want you for now to be the Master of Arms on the Aeon, do you have a problem with handling that responsibility?"

Haruhi relaxed her expression back toward seriousness and nodded once in agreement with the Taii's opinion, it was obvious that she both had her head screwed on straight and had the right dose of realism to bend that which needed to be bent when push came to shove; in addition her dislike of coming second place in the game of war struck a similar chord within Haruhi past. “None at all, Taii, it suits me perfectly.” Truth be told the Plumeria's armory paled into insignificance when compared to the Irim gunships ship she had cut her teeth on, though it was most welcome all the same.

"Then consider yourself transfer approved. The Aeon is currently being repaired, so the crew is staying onboard our Ikoi, the Kyoten. Take your gear there and see Dang Mei - Nitô Juni, the stations Service Chief for your temporary quarters. I will have Eternity the ship's AI send you our current Armory status, and when the ship is complete I will want to see a list of items that you think we might need. For now, take advantage of some down time, and get to know the rest of the crew. Unless you have any questions for me, you are dismissed."

“Shall do, Captain, and nothing to ask for the present.” With another bow to excuse herself Haruhi made good of Ise's orders and took her leave of the officer, turning deeper into the station with things to do and people to see.

Tsukiki Alia

Katae sat in the Wardroom of the 7th Dock. A cup of coffee, a folder and a stylus sat on the table before her. A quick check to Jorgen-Jôtô Heisho confirmed that the repairs to the Aeon were proceeding on time. Hmm, this Tsukiki seems interesting. Born on the Ikoi. Different.

Alia had gone to the door 30 minutes early just so she wouldn't be late. The whole time she sat and couldn't stop the jitters she was having from nervousness. It unnerved her to be this nervous. Usually she was the care free happy go lucky type, but this interview had her shut tighter then a clam. She let out another deep breath trying to stop the nervous shakes. Once they had stopped being visible she glanced at her chronometer. Three minutes isn't too early is it? She thought to herself as she reached out to barely brush the buzzer button.

Katae picked up her cup of coffee and took a sip, then signaled the station computer to open the door for Alia. "Enter." she called out as she placed the cup down.

Alia appeared calm as she walked through the doorway. She quickly made a deep bow to the Taii, and jittered slightly as she waited for her superior to give her leave to stand back up.

Katae signaled for the door to close, "At ease Tsukiki-Hei take a seat. I'm sure that this will not take use long." She watched Alia closely to get a gauge of the Valkyrja's state.

Alia would appear to the casual observer to be the standard of military calm. However those with trained eyes could easily tell that she was uncomfortable and nervous. Alia knew this but couldn't help it she was uncomfortable and nervous. She took the offered seat soon after returning to ease. "Thank you Ise-Taii, for taking my request for employment. My father was very pleased for my first assignment to be aboard the Aeon. He has read all of your reports."

Father? Nekovalkyrja do not have fathers. She flipped open the dossier before her, and confirmed that Alia was a Valkyrja and not a Yamataian. "And who might this 'father' be?" she asked.

"He is Gurei-Taii, Commander of the Ikoi. He raised me and helped me through training. I know he isn't my biological dad. However he is the closest thing to family i have." She ended her statement with a small smirk. She knew that Rafu would have beamed to hear Alia say that she considered him family. He always tends to think himself to be hated and loathed by everyone. If only he could understand my love for him.

Katae thought about her brief meeting with Gurei-Taii, he seemed a capable officer. "I see, well family is where you make it. I think I can dispense with why you enlisted since you are a production Nekovalkyrja. What do you think is your most valuable asset that you bring to the Aeon.

Alia's nervousness vanished in the blink of an eye. "That's obvious Ise-Taii, because i can fly your ship better then anyone on this station." Her cocky smile was emblazoned on her face showing her utter confidence in her abilities.

Well that was expected. she thought. "Confidence is a good thing Tuskiki-Hei, but experience still matters. I doubt you could fly her better than me. But I like your attitude. Which do your prefer a Mindy or Daisy?"

Alia rubbed her chin deep in thought over the question. "Let me answer your question with another question. Should we sit on our haunches and wait for the enemy to come to us or should we go and burn out the enemy and make sure he can never attack us again? I personally would choose the latter. So I would take the Mindy. It's more of an offensive power suit then the daisy in my humble opinion."

"I prefer the Mindy myself, but the Daisy is not to be dismissed. For some missions it is better than a Mindy especially when Stealth is required." She noted a comment in Alia's file.

"You seemed familiar with the Sakura-Class; can you tell me two differences between the weaponry between them and the standard Plumeria?"

She smiled bigger and put her arms behind her head. "Well the Main weapon array is much better, the rapid pulse allowing its use for swifter skirmishes. The pod amount stayed the same, i wish they had increased that amount but the bean counters don't go on the front lines so what do they care," she gave a quick wink before continuing on, "the anti-matter guns stayed the same, about the only difference i can think of is in the Heavy version of the Plumeria. I think the Heavy version has some anti-fighter and mecha cannons which definitely help in a close quarter fire fight. Other than that I don't know what else to tell you."

"You forgot that the Plumeria carries two torpedoes, given what happened at UX-25, you would be advised to bone up on some of the older designs just in case. But that's good enough. I think you will do. Once the Aeon is done being worked on pick a cabin and stow your gear. Welcome aboard." Katae replied.

Alia's grin stretched ear to ear. She did another deep bow. "Thank you Ise-Taii, It will be an honor to serve on your bridge. I won't let you regret your decision. "

"I better not, or I'll make sure to let Gurei-Taii know about it. You're dismissed."

Alia's smile vanished with those last hurtful words. She nodded curtly and left the room. I have to watch what i say around the Taii, she has the tongue of a viper.

Yukimura Hoshi

Katae walked around the conference room to stretch her legs as she waited for the last of her interviews for the day to arrive. Once she had worked the kinks out she returned to her seat. The computer had informed her that Yukimura-Hei had arrived on station.

Hoshi Yukimura stepped out of the Shuttle that had brought him to the station. Uneasily, he looked at the message that had been sent to him. “Well... here we go." He said, immediately heading to the temporary locker to put his things away, and then made a beeline to the conference room. Hopefully, he'd make it on time.

He made it there three minutes before the interview would officially start, so he composed himself before letting his presence be known in front of the door.

When the door chime sounded Katae looked up from the performance report on the applicant. She took a moment to send a message to a friend of hers regarding a training situation. Once done, she pressed the button to open the door. "Enter." She called in a crisp voice.

Hoshi stepped into the room, far enough to clear the door as it closed, and bowed appropriately to the Taii.
"Hoshi Yukimura Santo Hei, Ise-Taii"
"Reporting as ordered." He came out of the bow.

"At ease Yukimura-Santô Hei, take a seat and we will begin." Katae said pointing to the chair opposite her.

Hoshi sat obediently, keeping his eyes up at the Taii. He was a bit nervous, but he kept it off on the surface.

"Your training reports look good, but I do have a few questions that I would like answered before I make my final decision. Why did you choose to enlist the Star Army?" Katae inquired.

Hoshi was surprised at the question, but gave it some thought before answering. "To make my family proud and to do honor to my nation." True enough, he thought. "To help people with the skills I have and that I could acquire."

"Why did you choose Infantry? Not that there is anything wrong with it. I'm just curious." Katae prodded.

"Because flying fancy ships, developing weapons, or stalking some important politician wouldn't give me the same experience." He tilted his forward as he said it, as if embarrassed. "It wouldn't give me the same satisfaction from the work." Far more blunt than intended, but Hoshi rallied, moving his head back up to look at the Taii and meet her eyes.

Katae chuckled for a moment. Stalking politicians... why bother... "According to your records you are also trained as a corpsmen. So you have a working knowledge of the types of wounds you will face. Our Medbay is being upgraded with autonomous equipment, which is why I did not ask for a dedicated medic. But I will expect you to become familiar with the new equipment."

"Aye, Ma'am. I will make sure I am familiar with the equipment. Having someone die because I didn't understand their use would be foolish."

"We do have a nurse on board, Nami-Hei, the cook doubles as a nurse. So you should get to know her. Let's see one last question." Katae said pausing.

"I noticed when I came into the lounge that you were standing off to the side. Do you consider yourself to be a social person? Because you will be serving with these people for a while, and everyone has to know they can trust each other."

Hoshi cast his eyes down. He knew he had stood off to the side, avoiding contact. "I don't consider myself a 'Social Person', Ma'am. It takes time for me to make friends, but I won't hesitate to trust my fellow crew members with my life, and if I trust them... They'll trust me. That's how I view the situation." He shifted uncomfortably, but was silent after what he said.

"As fair an answer as I think I can expect. After all one can not order people to be friends. But I will strongly advise that you at least make a conscious effort to at least try to interact with them. Who knows in time you may actually make a few friends." Katae said. "Do you have any questions Santo-Hei?"

"Erm... I think I may already know the answer to this, but will I be assigned a full Medical Kit in my duties? Or will I be outfitted the same as a regular soldier? From my understanding, the equipment won't be in the Field." Hoshi was glad to change the subject, and held a little more enthusiasm in that last statement than intended.

"You will be issued a standard medical kit, along with whatever supplies you requisition." she answered.

"Ah... Thank you, Ma'am."
"I have no more questions."

"Very well Yukimura Hoshi-Santô Hei, consider yourself accepted to the Aeon. While the ship is being repaired we are staying about the Ikoi starbase Kyoten, so get your bags and see the station chief regarding quarters." Katae said with a smile.

Hoshi stood and bowed, "Aye, Ma'am. I will get that done as soon as I can."

"Take care Yukimura, dismissed."

"Aye Ma'am" Another bow, and then Hoshi left the room dutifully. I really do need to talk more, don't I? She's right.

Katae watched the soldier as he made his way out of the office. She could see his forehead was furled in thought. Good, I've given him some food for thought.

Im'inao Asine

Katae made her way to the wardroom on the Kyoten. It seemed that Star Army Personnel had found another potential crewmember for her ship. She had already queued up a message to be delivered upon his arrival at Virgo Starfortress. The timing of his arrival was fortuitous. If he passed her scrutinity then he would be able to participate in the training scenario she had set up.

As she walked into the Wardroom the MEGAMI informed her that the message had be delivered. She got herself a cup of coffee to sip while she waited for him to arrive.

Asi arrived at the station, not entirely sure why he had been sent this way after basic. It wasn't exactly a hub, though if they had something special in mind... he wouldn't mind overly much. Suddenly, his communicator went off, and a message appeared. His eyebrows went up when he read it. So they had something in mind after all. He quickly made his way through the station to the Kyoten, and then to the Wardroom. Before entering, he quickly checked over his uniform. He didn't want to look perfect, but it wouldn't do him any good to look shabby either. After cleaning up a little, he then stepped through the door, and approached Katae. "Ma'am? Santo Hei Im'inao Asine. I was told to report to a potential commanding officer here?"

"Well, then Im'inao Asine-Santô Hei you are in the right place. I am Ise Katae-Taii, commander of the Aeon. Take a seat and we can commence with your interview. Looks like his training was a bit lax, at least with regards on etiquette and how to report.

"Yes ma'am." Asi found a seat. He quickly arranged himself in his seat, careful not to sit in such a way as for it to seem as though he has either lax or impatient. "May I ask what the mission of the Aeon is, ma'am"

"The Aeon and the rest of the squadron are currently assigned to exploration. We will be deploying a new type of sensor drone to help us track Mishhu ship movements approaching Yamatai space. And exploring star systems looking for resources the Empire will need to fight this war. A good question, but now I have one for you. What was your reason in enlisting in the Star Army?"

"My father served on one of the ships in the 4th Standard Fleet for my entire life, until he was killed during the battle over Tami. I joined the Star Army in memory of my father, and because it is the only life I know."

"So what exactly is your goal, you have enlisted but you must have some long term plane." Katae inquired.

"I wish only to serve the same military that my father felt such loyalty toward. Honestly, I don't feel as though I would be qualified to command a starship, but perhaps to serve as a Master at Arms, or Squadron leader some day."

"Well I have been reviewing your records from Star Army Training. There are some comments from several of your instructors that I am troubled by. 'Recruit not performing to full potential. Recruit lacks motivation to achieve distinction. Recruit performs adequately.'" Katae said reading the review aloud.

"So what do you have to say to that Santô Hei?" She asked.

"Ma'am, I cannot speak for my instructors, but I performed well enough to get through basic training. I felt that there was little purpose in doing well in something which had little or no effect on my future in the Star Army. I think that my real ability will be displayed more than sufficiently in a situation which merits it; I did not feel that basic was that situation. If you would like to test me in some way, I would be glad to accept that."

"Im'inao-Santô Hei it is not my job to test people. But the situations you will encounter aboard the Aeon will. But before I make my final decision, I want you to understand on thing. I have no tolerance for dead wood, I expect every member of my crew to perform their best. We are not a training ship, and the safety of the ship and the crew demands that everyone be able to depend on their fellow soldiers. So are you willing to do that, to give me your all." Katae asked.

"Yes ma'am. I have never let a friend down knowingly, and I like to think that fellow crew members are considered friends. I have never been unwilling to perform as needed. Especially if it means that my failure to do so would put a fellow soldier in danger. I may not have performed to my best in the past, but I haven't made myself, as you said, 'dead wood'." He sat forward, slightly angered that anyone would think that of him. "I hope that isn't how you view me ma'am."

"I've not yet formed an opinion about your Im'iano-Hei. The instructors just present their opinions. I wanted to know how you felt about them. I make my own decisions about those under my command. I believe everyone should be given the chance to prove themselves, to learn what they are made of. And I have decided to give you give you the opportunity. So effective immediately, you are accepted aboard the Aeon as a crew member. I believe you have what it takes." Katae answered.

Asi stood up and made sure that his face showed nothing of his hesitance in being under the command of someone who questioned his abilities. He bowed deeply to Katae. "Thank you for the opportunity ma'am. What are my current orders in that case, Katae-Taii?"

"Ise-Taii if you please. The crew has been given standing orders to report to the Aeon at 1400hrs. Once everyone is onboard we are going to conduct some training while the rest of the squadron is being repaired. Until then you are free to make use of the Kyoten's resources. If you need to make any purchases in Virgo Station, find someone to go with you. Standing orders are no one leaves Ikoi without at least one person accompanying them. You should stop by the ship store on the Kyoten and pick up your ship patches prior to our departure."

"Of course, Ise-Taii. Is there anything else I should collect before we leave? I have nothing outside of my standard issue equipment at the moment.”

Katae stood up adjusting her tunic as she did. "No, anything else you will require will be supplied aboard the ship. You were issued a power armor, which did you take? Haruhi-Santô Juni our Master at Arms will issue you any non-standard weapons or armor equipment as needed."

"I wanted to wait until I arrived here to speak with you about that ma'am. As you can see I'm a bit tall for the standard power armors. Do you have any preferences as to what I take, since I will likely be using something non-standard?"

"You are definitely too tall for the standard Mindy M2-2A Power Armor. You should be able to use a Daisy. But I have an order in with the Quartermaster for some new equipment. If its fulfilled you will be issued one of the Mindy M2-3A armors otherwise you will be issued a Daisy."

"Yes ma'am, that sounds good to me. Thank you. I will make sure to be present at 1400." With that, he bowed once more, and left the room, heading to first grab his things, then make his way to the Aeon to stow his gear.

"Have a good day Hei. I look forward to seeing you later." Katae said as he left.

Sum'Ishi Taikai

Katae waited in the Kyoten's wardroom sipping her coffee. Well it looks like Star Army Personnel may have found the Aeon an extra Engineer. If she works out Usaga will be grateful. she thought as she reviewed the file on the applicant. This one was at least on paper the polar opposite of the last crewman she interviewed as far as training went.

When Taikai arrived at Virgo Station her Star Army Communicator signaled that it has received a message.

Sum'Ishi Taikai- Santô Hei
Please report to the Kyoten, the 7th Squadron's Ikoi Starbase. Your interview will take place in the Wardroom.
Signed Ise-Taii.

Taikia quickly typed in a reply. "Understood, Ma'am. I will be there momentarily."

Taikai strode towards the Wardroom, straightening her hair and uniform as best as she could. She reached the entrance and knocked politely.

Katae instructed the Kyoten's AI to open the door. "Enter." she called out in her command tone, looking at the open doorway.

Taikai entered the room and bowed politely. "Sum’ishi- Santô Hei reporting as instructed, Ise-Taii."

"Please be seated Sum’ishi-Santô Hei and we can get started. I'm sure this will not take long." Katae replied. She then picked up her cup and took a sip while looking at the Yamataian female with rather unique hair coloring.

Taikai moved to the appropriate chair and seated herself gracefully. Her aqua-colored eyes quickly swept the room, taking in her surroundings, before she refocused on the Captain of the ship she hoped to join.

Katae looked up at Taikai fixing her with her gaze. "So Sum’ishi-Hei, why did you choose to enlist in the Army? And what do you feel you have to offer the Aeon."

"My father is a Medic in the Army, and my mother was a Technician on the same ship, before she met him and then had me. I've always known that I wanted to follow their lead; to serve our glorious leaders as they did. I love both the technological aspects and the organized life of the military, and I really couldn't imagine living any other life."

"As for my potential contribution to your ship, I am a fully trained Technician, which is a position I have heard you are in need of. I also have a basic grasp of Medicine, thanks to my father. And I constantly strive to improve myself and my pool of knowledge. I can adapt easily to the conditions of the Aeon, and hopefully learn more skills that could contribute as we continue on our mission. I strive to be a well-rounded and useful person."

Katae nodded, "That's a fair answer. Our mission is primarily exploration, and in the future we will be performing tasks to aid in the war effort. As an engineer you will be expected to participate on away teams."

Taikai resisted the urge to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear - a nervous gesture she had had since childhood. "I am fully prepared to participate to my fullest extent on both the tasks of away teams and general efforts towards success in the war."

"In fact, I hope to do well enough in such tasks to eventually be in a position to take on even more responsibilities. I would be very proud to one day be considered for the position of Head Engineer of a ship such as the Aeon"

Katae chuckled. "Usaga-Hei might have a different opinion. But if its one thing I have learned, everything changes in the Universe. So it is entirely possible that if you do your best and serve with distinction you could rise to that position. But for now you will have to settle for being Usaga-Hei's assistant."

Taikai blushed lightly. "I am sorry if I misspoke in my zeal, Ise-Taii. I am very willing to serve as an assistant to someone as notable as Usaga-Hei. I hope to learn much from her if I am found acceptable for enlistment on your ship."

"You did not. I was going to ask you what your long term goals were, so you saved me that question. Usaga-Hei has a reputation for thinking outside the box, and coming up with creative technical solutions. I'm sure she will be grateful for another pair of hands. As well as another bright mind to bounce ideas off. Just because you are her assistant, do not hesitate to make suggestions and take the initiative. Those are traits that I expect of all my crew, and in a crisis that is important to save lives. Do you have any questions Sum’ishi-Hei?"

Taking a quick steadying breath, Taikai allowed herself a brief second of joy that she had received such a compliment. "I actually had two questions, Ma'am. The first was in regards to the assignment of bunking arrangements. How are our quarters assigned?"

Katae took a sip of her coffee, "The Aeon has 8 cabins for crew members, each is setup for two occupants. I prefer to let my crew members choose their roommates. Unless a problem arises then I will get involved." Katae answered.

"In that case, do you happen to know if any of your crewmembers are currently looking for a bunkmate?" Taikai flushed slightly. "That is, a person with whom they might share a room, rather than a person they might- um..." her voice trailed off and she bit her lip.

"I have no restrictions about coed accommodations if that acceptable to both parties. As for interpersonal activities, what happens between consenting soldiers is their affair as long as it does not interfere with their duties. I do know that Usaga-Hei currently does not have a room mate, and Tsukiki-Hei has not chosen a cabin as well, so you could approach either of them regarding sharing a room if you like." Katae replied.

Taikai nodded. "Yes, Ma'am. Thank you. I will enquire with them. As for my second question, I was wondering what preferences or requirements you had in regards to which power armors your crewmembers used."

"That is an excellent question. Normally in the past power armor was assigned to a starship and crew members would use which ever was available. Recently the service has started issuing armor to the individual. I just recently succeeded in getting the Aeon outfitted with the new Mindy 2-3A series of armor. They will be assigned to each person." Katae answered.

Taikai kept herself from gaping, but it was a near thing. The Mindy 2-3A was a marvel of technology! "That is amazing. To be allowed to use one of the first Mindy 2-3A units would be more than I could ever have hoped for."

"Yes, I have been field testing one of them for the past 8 months. Having our ship chosen to test them en-mass is an honor. I believe you will fit on the Aeon, so consider yourself officially assigned. Stop by the ship's store and get your ship patch and report to the ship at 1400hrs Sum’ishi-Hei."

"Thank you very much, Ise-Taii." Taikai stood up and bowed formally. "I will do my best to bring honor to your ship and to fulfill all of your expectations of me."

She started to leave, but a thought occurred to her. "What would you prefer me to call you while under your command, Ma'am?"

"Ise-Taii, Taii or ma'am are all acceptable depending upon the circumstances. Check out the Ship's rules for guidance on this matter." Katae said with a smile.

"Yes, Ma'am," Taikai bowed once more and then strode from the room, trying not to appear as though she was hurrying. Once she was in the corridor, she allowed herself a relieved sigh before hurrying off to the armory.

Yamamoo Trowa

The transport that Trowa secured passage on was crowded with other soldiers. The majority of these were Santô Hei's like him most likely newly out of basic training. When the shuttle arrived at the Depot at Virginia, Trowa's communicator chirped indicating a text message had arrived.
To: Santô Hei Yamamoo
Subject: Transport to YSS Henry Chen

A Kuma T8 Multi-role Shuttle; Vigilant NG-X1-409-1 is preparing to depart from Virginia Depot to the Chen in 20 minutes. Present yourself to the pilot and they will transport.

The pilot will provide you with instructions as to where to find me.

Ise Katae, Taii
Commander, 1XF 7th Squadron
Trowa read the message and then stood up on his tip toes to see above the crowd. He finally spotted the Kuma T8 shuttle, picked up his bag, and headed over. He spotted the pilot and began to raise his hand in a salute but checked himself. You bowed to superiors in the Star army of Yamatai. Setting his bag on the floor, Trowa bowed to the pilot and identified himself. "Santô Hei Yamamoo, reporting as ordered by Taii Ise Katae."

The brown haired Nekovalkyrja who was pre-flighting the shuttle turned to Trowa. She took a moment to take stock of the new crew member. She smiled warmly and returned his bow although not as deep.

"I am pleased to meet you Yamamoo-Hei. I am Nami Sachi-Ittô Hei, the Aeon's cook and errand person. Stow your bags in one of the overhead compartments and take a seat. I have one last item on my checklist and it should be here shortly. We do not want to keep Ise-Taii waiting." Sachi then turned and made her way to the rear of the shuttle and opened the doors.

After stowing the four rear seats she took a seat and next to Trawoo and turned the chair to face him. "So where are you from?" she asked.

Trowa straped himself in, then looked up at the brown haired Nekovalkyrja. "Yamatai is where I was born, but I've lived on Nepleslia for almost ten years growing up." As they lifted off, Trowa asked, "Your the cook? How is the chow on the Aeon?"

Sachi smiled, "I do my best to provide a variety of high-quality meals. I also make it a point to get to know the crew and find out what kind of foods they like so that the menu has different things for people to try."

The sound of a forklift approaching interrupted the conversation, and Sachi walked out to inspect the pallet. Once she was satisfied the operator deposited the load in the shuttle.

Sachii then entered the shuttle and closed the hatch. "Well Yamomoo-Hei, we are all set for departure. My friend Shina-Hei is going to be so jealous, this is a new shuttle for the Aeon and I get to fly it before her." With that said she ducked into the cockpit, and completed her final preflight. Within minutes the shuttle was proceeding smoothly into the atmosphere, "If you like I can do a flyby over the Aeon so you can see her before we dock on the Chen." She called out from the cockpit.

"Yea I would love too. I love these big star ships. Child-like maybe, but I never let that stop me." Trowa leaned in his seat as far as he could so he could see through the cockpit. "But I'm not sure we should keep Katae-Taii waiting."

"There is no need to worry, the Aeon is close enough to the Henry Chen that we will not add more than a minute or so. You should get a chance to see the ship you are hoping to serve aboard. Oh, and I would definitely not refer to the Taii by her first name. Ise-Taii, Taii or ma'am, unless you want to end your career at that start." She adjusted the shuttle’s speed and trajectory. "You will get a better view of the ship from up here, take the other seat."

Trowa winched as he unstrapped and moved forward for a better view. "I definitely spent too much time on Nepleslia." He said as he sat down. "Thanks for pointing that out. I hate making bad first impressions." He looked at the Aeon in awe. At 254 meters, she was an impressive ship. "I really hope the good Taii finds me acceptable." He said mostly to himself. "I'd give anything to serve aboard her."

"Ise-Taii is one to usually forgive an honest mistake like that. But you are right, best to avoid it just the same." Sachi rotated the shuttle to afford them a better view. "I hardly recognize her; she looks very different from what I came aboard a year ago. She was a 1C variant and just the basic hull coloration. Now as a 1D and with the Taii's squadron leader colors she's very distinctive and packs a bigger punch."

After bringing the shuttle around the Aeon she headed over to the Henry Chen. The biggest challenge was not being hit by any of the trainees but she brought the shuttle into the bay without incident. After shutting down the shuttle, she turned to Trowa.

"Well, good luck Yamamoo-Hei, the Taii says you’re to meet her in the Lounge on Deck 8. May as well keep your bags onboard." Sachi said.

"Thanks for the view of the Aeon, and the advice." He flashed his lopsided grin at her and added, "I hope to be sampling your fine cooking in the near future."

Trowa had little trouble finding the Lounge. Before entering he check himself to make sure he was presentable. Out of habit, Trowa checked to make sure that his boot knife was secure in its scabbard, that his pipe was still in his pocket, that his "pencil sharpener" wasn't showing out of the back of his shirt collar, and that his eye patch was completely covering his cybernetic eye. Taking a steadying breath, Trowa knocked on the door.

Katae was seated in the lounge monitoring the team’s progress in the simulation. Her comrades were definitely throwing a few curves into the scenario. Before her was a print out of the recruit’s service record, and a cup of coffee. One good thing about conducting the interview here is they have good coffee. She took a long sip from the cup savoring the aromatic fragrance as she did.

The door chime indicated that the recruit had arrived. She placed her cup back on the table, picked up the folder and signaled for the door to open. Katae then scanned the folder, and pushed her errant brown strand back into place. She looked at the open doorway and scanned the soldier’s appearance from a distance.

Trowa stepped inside as the door opened and did a quick scan of the room as he approached, making mental notes of the layout of the room. "Santô Hei Trowa Yamamoo reporting as ordered." said as he bowed to the Taii.

Katae watched how Twowa entered the room. Well he knew better than to salute. That is a point for him. she thought.

“Have a seat Santô Hei, I am sure this will not take long. I just have a few questions I want to ask before making my final decision regarding your placement on my ship.” She said pointing to the chair opposite her.

Trowa nodded and sat down in the indicated seat. Again, he quickly took in his surroundings and then turned his one dark blue eye to study the Taii.

Katae looked at him, and took note of the eye patch. “Why are you wearing that eye patch? Your record says you have a cybernetic eye, which is not an uncommon thing among Nepleslians. In fact most I have known seem to be proud of them. You can not operate effectively with only one eye; your depth perception will be impaired.”

Trowa smiled slightly. "Most Nepleslians are proud of them. But I've found that some Yamataians are uncomfortable with one cybernetic glowing red eye looking at them. I wear this so that I don't distract others from their work. As for being able to see, this patch is similar to those one way windows. I can see through it just fine, but unless you look very closely, you can't see my eye." He reached up and removed the eye patch, revealing a glowing red eye. "If you have any objections to it, then I won't wear it."

“If you can see through it and it does not impair your ability to operate, I do not care one way or another.” She paused to look at his dossier, “Here are my next two questions: Why did you choose to enlist in the Star Army? What do you think is your greatest asset that you bring?” Katae asked.

Trowa's mouth turned into his lop sided, rouge grin. "Because the ladies love a man in uniform." He quickly became serous again. "No, I joined the Star Army because I wished to serve. My father served the Star Army for many years. He taught the way of a solder, to serve, unfailing and loyally. That is why I joined."

Again, Trowa grinned as he prepared to answer. "My greatest asset? Morale. I like to see that everyone is in good spirits. As an old Chusa I had in basic training like to put it," Trowa switched to an old British accent, "'No exercise means flabby bodies, which means flabby minds which means are enemies knows he's got us. But even with exercise if you've got no moral it makes for a bad show all round.'" Trowa went on in his normal voice. "I took his words to heart and made sure that my squad never was low on moral."

"But I take my responsibilities and jobs very seriously. I'm a man who follows orders and will do all by jobs to the best of my ability. I will not avoid volunteering for any 'grunt' work. I'm not after personal glory. I just want to serve.”

Katae kept herself from smirking as Trowa started his response. Well he certainly has some of the Nepleslian bravado. she thought. “Morale is important, and in the days to come will be a matter of concern. Overall I must say I like your attitude. I fully expect all my crew to lend a hand when needed. Everyone helps with housekeeping, and resupply. My rules are simple; I expect the same from my crew as I do from myself. I want and demand that all my crew give their best effort.” She said.

Katae reached down and picked up her cup of coffee to take a sip and collect her thoughts. Looking over her cup with her green eyes fixed on Trowa she asked, “When you enlisted in the Star Army of Yamatai, why did you not take advantage of a body upgrade?”

Trowa found himself already liking the Taii. She was business, but at the same time, Trowa could tell that she cared about those she commanded. He smiled at her question; it was one that he himself had planned on asking. "Well Ma'am, when I first got this light bulb, I didn't think much of it. It wasn't until basic training that I learned all about all the new software and upgrades you can get with cybernetic implants. I just never got around to getting an upgrade. This is a question I actually had. I wanted to get an upgraded cybernetic implant. But I wanted to get something that would be of use to my new assignment. Aside from getting an eye that can see in lowlight, infrared, or at distances, I've been looking at some computer interface upgrades that will allow me to function more effectively in power armor or with a star ships computer. But I wasn't sure if that would be acceptable."

Katae pondered Trowa’s response. Its not exactly what I meant… She placed her cup back down. “I am not an expert on cybernetics. What I was referring to a complete body upgrade to a Yamataian body. For the time being I am willing to entertain the idea of letting you augment yourself to better perform your duties. It is your ability to perform that truly matters; if that becomes an issue we can always pursue the body transfer. I have decided to take you on Yamamoo-Santô Hei. I will notify Eternity to add you to the roster. Once we get back on the ship you can select one of the free bunks. Meanwhile, I am going to throw you into a simulation with the rest of the new members.”

Trowa stood and snapped to attention. "Thank you, Taii. I will see to it that you will not regret your decision."

Katae picked up a data pad and keyed it to provide directions to the training area. She handed the pad to Trowa. “You are to report to the simulator facility. You will be temporarily issued a Mindy 2-2A power armor for the exercise. You will have to worry about getting to know the others after the simulation.”

Trowa took the data pad and bowed. "Aye, aye Ma'am."

Tsubei Kyoka

Katae entered the Kyoten's lounge, it seemed like only a short while ago she was here with a handful of new recruits. The Aeon was still running short on crew, but at least she was finally getting another Infantry person, which was good given the upcoming assignment. Katae crossed over to get a cup of coffee, and found a seat at a table. She perused the personnel report supplied on the applicant by Star Army Personnel. Young, and green, well so were most of the crew when I took the Aeon out the first time. she thought.

Tsubei Kyoka entered the main lounge of the Ikoi-type starbase, her ears twitching with excitement. She noticed the only other person in there, wearing an officer's colors, so she went over and tapped the mysterious person's shoulder, and then took a seat across from them. "I'm guessing that you're my sensei, nyan?" She asked, cocking her head.

Katae stared at the Violet haired Neko with a cold expression. She put down the cup of coffee, "Is that how you were taught to report to a superior Tsubei-Santô Hei? You have 15 seconds to report properly or this interview is over and you will be returning to training." The Taii said.

"Erm. . . . uh- I apologize, sensei! I didn't mean to be rude! It will never happen again!" The Neko blurted, clapping her hands together in apology, before standing up and bowing, introducing herself properly. "Santo Hei, Tsubei Kyoka reporting for duty, sensei!" She announced before taking a seat again.

"See that it does not Santô Hei. Well, its fairly obvious why you are in the Star Army. So I can dispense with that question. What do you think is your best talent that your bring, and how do you think it will help the Aeon?" Katae asked the Neko watching the play of emotions across her face.

"W-Well, I'm a pretty good Power Armor pilot ~ Nyan." Tsubei began, listing the things off. "I'm also trained in all the basic military skills, as is required. . . . I can cook and clean too, nyan!"

Katae looked at the report, "Well I am sure Nami-Hei and Anderson-Hei will appreciate another pair of hands in the galley. Have you decided what your long term goals are?" she asked.

Tsubei thought for a moment, her nervous look erased, but then shrugged and shook her head. "I really haven't thought that far. . ." She began. "I mean. . . It's another EIGHT YEARS before my service lets up. I guess I want to become an officer. . ."

Katae chuckled, "Actually your obligation is only for three years, and then you have the option to reenlist. Becoming an officer is an admirable goal, but never forget our first duty is to be a good soldier, regardless of rank. I am going to give you a chance Tsubei-Hei. As an Infantry person you will report directly to Haruhi-Santô Juni. She's a good soldier, and you would do well to listen to her advice. I have already informed Eternity to add you to the authorized personnel to board the Aeon. You have been assigned to cabin eight. You will have to share it with Yamamoo-Hei. Go stow your gear and get your power armor setup. We get under way in 30 minutes."

Kyoka smiled and nodded. "Hai, sensei! When do I leave?" She asked, standing up and bowing.

"And for the record it is Ise-Taii, Taii, or ma'am, not sensei. You are dismissed, and welcome aboard the Aeon." Katae said.

"Y-yes ma'am!" Kyoka declared before bowing one final time and leaving the lounge.

Monomonoi Ko

The T7 Shuttle Diligent settled gently onto the deck under the careful control of Shina Kim-Hei. After signaling the bay doors to close, she did a quick check to verify that the atmosphere was at normal pressure. Kim then stepped out of the cockpit into the passenger area. She walked over and activated the switch to open the rear door. As the door opened she turned to her only passenger for this trip. "Monomoi-Hei, welcome to the Aeon. You certainly picked a busy interval to arrive. We will be leaving orbit shortly, so hopefully your interview will go well."

"I hope so, ma'am." the young recruit chimed, surprisingly upbeat at the prospect of his first assignment fresh out of training. The trip -- much to his pleasure -- was smooth and uneventful, a sure sign of his escort's astoundingly stellar flight control over the shuttle. With a stretch and a slow, steady rise, Monomonoi Ko stood to face the woman who'd brought him to the Aeon in-orbit above.

"I'm a little nervous." the red-head hummed out, his hair contrasting vibrantly with the green shirt draped over his physique. "Any advice you'd be willing to spare beforehand, ma'am?"

"Number one rule when dealing with Ise-Taii, just be honest, do not try to bullshit her. And do not get her name wrong. We've had several recruits blunder and call her by her first name. And do not Salute, Bow." Kim said with a grin her violet eyes twinkling. "Grab your bags, and I will take you to the Wardroom. You drop your bags off when you enter the room."

With a silent nod and an unfamiliar tightness in his throat, Ko bows respectfully to his superior with practiced discipline. Scooping up his bags with a heave, the young soldier takes a deep breath before replying, "I'm all set, Kim-Hei." Behind his nervous veil, all Ko could contemplate were the possible scenarios of a military blunder. Here was hoping there wouldn't be a slip of the tongue.

Kim laughed, "It is Shina-Hei." She said resisting the urge to ruffle the recruits hair. Picking up a bag containing equipment she had picked up. "Let's go." Kim said stepping out and crossing the bay heading for the doorway.

"Right. Sorry." fumbles Ko, already making a mockery of his military training. With bags in tow, the nervously fidgety kid trots on behind Shina-Hei, an odd amalgamation of excitement and dread going a bout in his stomach as he saunters down through the bay.

Kim paused at the doorway, "Careful entering the Aeon has zero-g corridors. If you get into difficulty use the hand holds." she then stepped in and floated casually down the corridor, she stopped at the vertical shaft that would take them to the wardroom "The gravity is off at the moment because Engineering is recalibrating them. The horizontal passages should have gravity in a little while."

With another nod, Ko slings his now-weightless dufflebag and backpack across his shoulder before giving a light bound into the gravity-free corridor of the YSS Aeon. Half-finangling his way through the lack of gravity, the Yamataian Science Advisor pulls himself along every so often to maintain his direction, following as close to Shina-Hei as he can muster.

Once in the vertical shaft Kim "Perhaps it would be easier if you let me tow you?" She said holding her hand out. "After all we do not want to keep the Taii waiting, and its awkward trying to maneuver in this hall without gravity."

"Yes, ma'am." retorted the lower-ranking soldier, more than a little glad for the extra assistance. With a firm, gloved grip, Ko latches on to the Nekovalkyrja by the wrist unceremoniously, pushing a wayward red strand of hair from his eye that had displaced itself in the sudden lack of gravity and floated innocuously but nevertheless aggravating in front of him.

With practiced skill and grace, Kim quickly ascended the shaft. She slowed the two of them down so that as they approached the deck with the Wardroom they were barely moving. She floated into the normal hallway, and gravity pulled her to the floor. She pulled Ko towards the edge carefully so he could have his feet below him. "Here is the entrance to the wardroom. Leave your bags with me, and I'll take them down to the lounge. Go in and be sure to report." She said with a smile.

Unslinging his belongings with a pair of shrugs after nearly falling on his face, Ko passes his meager possessions to the awaiting Neko. With another practiced bow, Ko answers with a simplistic "Thank you, Shina-Hei." One deep breath later, the young astrobiologist stepped in through the doorway beyond and into the Wardroom, as per the Nekovalkyrja's instructions.

The Aeon's wardroom is the largest space on the ship for personnel. The walls show a slight mismatch in paint, from repairs from previous battles. Katae sat in one of the corner tables. A datapad in one hand, and a cup of coffee sitting on the table. She looked up at Ko when he entered the room.

With a casual glance, it was fairly obvious the YSS Aeon had seen its fair share of action, a multitude of scorch marks and soot stains here and there with spots where the walls had been repainted. A further glance through the largest room he'd seen yet sits a woman, datapad in hand, looking towards the lowly soldier from across the room, the patch on her arm denoting her as the commanding officer.

With a brisk step and a hard swallow out of sheer intimidation, Ko made his way to stand at a respectful distance from the Taii of the YSS Aeon, followed by a deep bow towards his obvious superior. "It is an honor to meet you, Ise-Taii. Monomonoi Ko, Santo-Hei Science Advisor, reporting for interview." greeting the young soldier, already feeling a cold sweat begin to formulate on his brow.

Katae took a moment to observe Ko with her green almond shaped eyes. Another fresh recruit. It wasn't so bad when I took the Aeon out for her first mission, but I wish that Personnel would find me some people with experience. she thought. She placed the datapad down, and motioned to the chair opposite herself. "Be seated Santô Hei, this will only take a few minutes. Because to be honest, that is about all I have time for. We are embarking shortly for a rendezvous with a group of NMX warships." she said.

"Yes, ma'am." he replied, shuffling his way into a seat opposite the commander officer as he locked eyes with hers. The Taii in-charge of the Aeon was clearly very busy -- and rightfully so, Ko wagered -- given the mention of the NMX forces the Yamataian vessel would be meeting up with.

"Okay, we'll start with one of the most important questions. In your opinion what is the most important thing you bring to the Aeon?" Katae asked, her voice neutral.

Ah. And so they'd reached the meat of the subject with surprising speed, forgoing small talk and other impersonal banter in favor of cutting the interview to the quick. "I'm well-versed in the study of Astrobiology," Ko began with pride, "capable of studying geological, geographical, and biological information for analysis and documentation. I also have a broad understanding of most natural and social sciences."

Katae pointed to the data pad. "That I could find out reading your service record. I am curious about you as a person, what makes you different than any other recruit who has graduated from Science training." she said.

"I... uh..." Ko stumbles, unsure how to answer the query. "My parents are both in the Star Army, Ise-Taii, and have been since before I was born. I suppose you could say it's in my blood -- not physically, but... uh... you get the gist, I'm sure." the young Science Advisor fumbles, losing what little cool he possessed.

"I feel that by serving Yamatai in a military station, I can bring honor to both my family and my people. Beyond that though, I believe that every citizen -- Star Army or civilian -- should do their part, especially during wartime... if you don't mind my saying, ma'am."

"Okay, that is a very responsible sentiment. I am going to approve your assignment. When we get to our destination, I have an task for you. The Aeon has fought against the Mishhu ships twice now, and we have very little intelligence to show for it. Once we disable the enemy, I want you to see about gathering samples of debris for analysis, and detailed scans of their ships. Think you can handle that?" She said calmly.

"Yes, ma'am." snapped Ko with a nod, glad that he hadn't completely botched his career in one fell swoop.

"Okay, Monomonoi-Hei, find yourself an empty bunk. Stow your gear and then report to the bridge. I will notify Eternity to give you access. Welcome aboard." she said with a grin.

"Yes, ma'am. Thank you, ma'am." Ko hums with precision, rising from his seat and bowing for what felt like the umpteenth time since he'd gotten up this morning. With a sharp turn, Ko begins the walk back towards the way he'd come in order to reclaim his gear, stow it properly and effectively, and report to the bridge to fulfill his orders.

O'Kutsuu Kame

The crew of the Aeon was busy making preparations to get underway. It was in orbit above Yamatai along with the other ships of the 7th Squadron. The last of the ships was emerging from the Squadron dock the Kyoten.

A T7 Shuttle flew up from the surface of the planet, with some last minute equipment, and a replacement crew member riding shotgun.

Once the shuttle landed in the shuttle bay the pilot opened the side hatch so the passenger could exit. The Santo-Hei waved, "Good luck there recruit. Your ship seems to be heading out in a hurry."

An Ittô Hei was seen checking out a T8 Kuma shuttle, attaching a weapon pod to the Kame O’Kutsuu noticed the Ittô Hei inspection of the T8 Kuma shuttle of the small but sleek shuttle; however, she quickly snaps out of her reverie upon hearing a strange new voice. She softly waves to the stranger Santo-Hei as she boarded the shuttle. "Orders...," she mumbles with a slight smile.

Along the way to the docking with the Kyoten, she admires the Turbo Aether Plasma Drives on the Plumeria-class Light Gunship saw being repaired.

The light-blue haired neko looked up from the weapon pod. "Would you be O'Kutsuu-Santô Hei?" she said closing the access panel and making her way forward to the shuttle's hatch.

"Hai," Kame says suddenly even more nervous then she has been before. Who could this person be? How does she know her name? Breathing in and out, Kame listened to the Neko's response.

Still nervous, Kame waits while her eyes drift just slightly to the weapon pods, searching to see what was wrong with it as her curiosity got the better of her.

"My name is Shina Kim-Ittô Hei of the Aeon. Ise-Taii told me to keep an eye out for you." she said with a smile, then turned to look at the weapon pod. "Something wrong Hei?"

Ah Ise-Taii. Kame remembered that name from her orders as she smiles thinking of how she would finally get a chance to serve on such a majestic ship of the line... well that and mow down some mishhu. "Ah, thank you. ... Well I really didn't emphasize in weapon systems in training, but I am wondering if the problem is power distribution or something else you could use help with... you know "

"Actually there is nothing wrong with the weapon pod. I was just completing the installation as part of our preparation for our mission. But on the Aeon you'll probably get plenty of time at with repairs." That said, the Neko entered the shuttle and waited for Kame to follow. Once Kame was seated in the passenger area, Kim entered the cockpit and the shuttle was soon away. The trip to the Aeon was relatively brief since the gunship was only a few kilometers away. Once the shuttle touched down, Kim came back out. "Ise-Taii has changed her mind and will be conducting your interview here in the shuttle bay. Seems she was down here looking at the T7. Good luck and welcome to the Aeon." she said with a wink.

Kame thanked her new potential friend Kim with a slight smile. Upon seeing her new Taii Ise Katae, she immediately bowed deeply without dropping the large bag that she has strapped across her back and replies with slightly more confidence "Santô-Hei Engineer Kame O'Kutsuu reporting for duty,

Katae took a moment to observe the newest applicant for her ship. The Aeon definitely needed another engineer and with the upcoming mission, the extra hands would be much needed she feared. "Good Day O’Kutsuu-Hei, glad to see that you made it. Another 20 minutes and you would have missed us. I'll keep this brief though."

Kame nods succinctly.

Katae took a moment to look at her isolated computer pad to review the service record for the Yamataian. "I see that you recently suffered a loss at the Battle for Veritas. Our upcoming mission is actually related to those events. But I digress. What are two traits that you have that you feel will make you a good addition to the crew?"

Kame looks deeply sullen as she remembers the picture she has of her parents only two weeks after to the Veritas shipyard; however, the Santo Hei shifts from sullenness to a surprise, to a malicious happiness, and to finally deep thought as she ponders the Taii’s words.

She sighs not coming up with anything, but the full truth, "Yes, my late parents raised me to respect the ship itself not only as a creation of but a living entity, a very child which we must both nurture and protect. I can do no less than to ensure that whatever I touch receives the same care they have shown me. As a second trait, I guess let's just say I have some unfinished business with a certain couple of squid and the inside of an active aether reactor core." She is proud she has finished bluntly as possible.

She has spunk. I'll give her that. And she has the proper mindset, she should fit with Usaga. she thought. "Well, I do not know about putting any Mishhu into the reactor, but I believe you will fit in with my current engineer, Usaga-Hei. Grab yourself a cabin and report to here in engineering ASAP." she said.

"Hai Taii", Kame bows deeply starts to walk off, but then stops for 1 minute and turns around to ask, "Taii, is Usaga's room available?" The engineer had thought it best if she stayed with the only other engineer on board even if they were on different shifts. Of course, she immediately feels stupid because right on cue, the computer AI, Eternity, chimes in. The soul of ship tells her that Usaga’s room is taken, but that three other rooms where available. In them contained Josea Gustav, Haruhi, Im'inao Asine, and Yukimura Hoshi. Since Haruhi was a girl’s name and well–boys were much too distracting for the engineer right now, Kame first greets and thanks Eternity, and requests that she be directed toward her cabin.

Oshiro Arkase

ON
Location:
Katae's cabin.
Katae had just finished putting on a clean uniform in preparation for her upcoming meeting when Eternity, notified her about the arrival of a new crew member.

Arkase would wander his way under the guidance of Eternity to Captain's Suite Entrance, and politely inform Eternity to notify his new commander.

Katae took a seat at the desk in her cabin. "Let him in Eternity." she said.

"Ise-Taisa will see you now." Eternity said as the cabin door opened.

Arkase stepped in and immediately bowed to the captain. "I am Oshiro-Nito Heisho." He said simply.

Katae took a moment to assess Arkase before she gave a nod in response to his bow, "Take a seat Oshiro-Heisho."

He did as he was told, and kept his eyes firmly rooted to the Taisa.

"Your service record is rather interesting. You served aboard the Nadare during the Battle of the South Gate, and then a brief assignment with the 2XF on a special operations group. Any particular reason you keep changing fleets?" she inquired.

At the mention of the Nadare, Arkase winced. "Aboard the Nadare, I served as the Taisho's protection detail. During the International Relation's Conference, I shot two crew mates who had betrayed us. I also fought off a boarding action by the NMX aboard the Nadare during South Gate, and after the battle was won I felt the need to get away from the frontlines for awhile. You'll see that I took some time to study at the Kyoto War College, and from there I was dragged into Tachibana-Taii's command structure. He..."

Arkase paused, obviously thinking over what he would next say.

"I didn't quite agree with his methods of command, and when he gave me a chance to express it I convinced him to transfer me away. Since then, I've spent time going from ship to ship. I suppose the short answer would be 'No particular reason, Ma'am.'"

Katae took a moment to consider what Arkase had said. "Well, nothing wrong with trying to find where you fit. You are the senior Enlisted member of the crew. The other Infantry members of the crew are still very green. So your experience will be needed, I will expect you to be a role model, and instructor for them. Haruhi-Juni is our Master At Arms, so you will answer to her directly."

"Hai." He said.

Katae paused, and thought for a moment. "The Aeon has seen her share of combat both before this war and since. Our current mission is exploration, but that does not mean we won't encounter hostiles. Once we get under way you and Haruhi should conduct some drills."

"What sort of drills do you have in mind, Ma'am?"

"From the logs of the last away team, the Infantry members need to work together better. They did not work as a cohesive unit. So team building drills, would seem in order." she replied

"Hmm... I have a few ideas, Ma'am. During my time in Task Force Phantom, I was in charge of a small team of infantry. I have some experience in conducting a drill."

Arkase tilted his head back, looking up at the ceiling. "If you wouldn't mind waiting a while, I could have your MEGAMI form a few scenarios around what you have in mind: team building."

Katae raised her hand, "Not at the moment, I've given the crew liberty. There will be plenty of time for drills once we are under way. I will leave it to you and Haruhi to work out the details of the drills."

"Hai. Is there anything else, Ma'am?"

"Find yourself an empty bunk, stow your gear and then take advantage of some of Yamatai's diversions. No telling how long it will be before we return." she answered.

"Yes Ma'am. May I be dismissed?"

"Welcome aboard the Aeon, you are dismissed." she said.
OFF

Saito Takamori

Location: Wardroom on Ikoi Starbase - Kyoten

Katae looked at looked at the repair report for the Aeon. How the hell could what was supposed to be a simple exploration mission could become a desperate fight for surival. Repairs will take 36 hours, and now we have new orders.... she thought. At least she was getting some crew replacements, and that was a good thing to her. Especially with what was coming up. I will have to ask our SSS liaison to remain here at the base for this mission.

She picked up her cup of coffee, and perused the datapad before her, while they were gone personnel saw fit to assign three new infantry soldiers to her crew. Well, the first one she was to see was Saito Takamori. She noted his training in demolitions, a skill that could be useful. They certainly could have used its on AX-01.

The black haired Neko put down the pad, savored her coffee while waiting for his arrival.

Takamori knocked on the Wardroom door. He had been summoned to report for duty. This was it - the moment he had been dreading and looking forward to. He had heard good things about the ship and captain but his nervousness was still there.

Katae sent a mental command to the Kyotens AI to open the door, "Enter." she called out in an authoritative voice.

As the door slid open, Takamori announced himself. "Santo-Hei Saito Takamori, reporting for duty, ma'am!" and bowed deeply. He almost yelled too loudly.

Katae smiled mentally allowing just a hint of it to appear on her face. She acknowledged his bow with a slight nod of her head consistent with her rank, "Please take a seat Santo-Hei, and there is no need to yell. My hearing is exceptional." she replied took a last sip of her coffee and put in down.

Saito straightened and walked stiffly to a chair oppsite the Captain. "Yes, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am." A bad start. He had been chastised right away. His father had told him that life would be bad if he started off on the wrong foot.

She made a mental note of his response, he did not crumble and get flustered, that was a plus in her book. "Sit at ease Saito-Hei, you wear that uniform because you earned the right to, this interview is just to help me ensure that you will fit in on the Aeon." she paused.

"I will start with one of my standard questions, why did you choose to join the Star Army, especially at this time?" she asked as she leaned back in her chair.

"Ma'am. I ... I suppose I joined for two reasons. First, the Battle of Yamatai scared a lot of people back home. I mean, if it could happen at the capital world, it could happen anywhere. And few systems are as well defended as Yamatai. I wanted to make sure it didn't hit home so I joined up to prevent it. If I'm out there, stopping the Mishhu, then hopefully, they won't be tearing our worlds to pieces." He took a breath. His nerves were calming down but now the dumb feeling was starting.

"The other reason was a little unrelated." He looked around. "I didn't like any of the jobs I had back home. I was in the entertainment business; acting, performing. But the people I worked with were all so ... well, good actors. They said I was good but I never was given much to do while those who knew influential people got more major roles. So, I guess you could say I was unemployed and looking. The Star Army gave me a job and a cause... if that makes sense."

He glanced at her eyes, scared to see what his new boss thought. Being unemployed had not gained him much respect from people.

"I see, an interesting reason. I appreciate candor, and well you seem to have plenty of that. I expect all my crew members to speak their minds, so long as they do so respectfully."

Takamori was silent. Maybe he'd not started off too badly after all.

"So, what do you consider your greatest asset that you bring to the crew?"

He thought about this. Then remembered Boot Camp. "Ma'am, if you don't already have one, I'm told I make a good morale officer. I.. uh, well, my class at Boot Camp said I was the best one for cheering them up. But, for more practical skills, I guess demolitions. I'd thought about training in medical but the instructor told me the Army needed more demolitions experts." What else was he good at? Takamori wondered.

"Morale officer? would you care to explain what you mean by that? I've your report from basic, but I want your understanding of the term. Our cook prides herself on helping the crew maintain a healthy attitude. Demolitions skill is useful, the Aeon was severely damaged because we did not have a trained demo person and a person was brought aboard who had a bomb inside their body. We lost a crew member as well as the Medbay, and damage to several key systems."

"Ma'am" he said, afraid he had just stepped on a landmine issue. "What I did in Boot Camp was help lighten the mood with stories, jokes, and things of that nature. I once recited lines from a comedy, Ring of Fire . I'm a people person, ma'am. I like being with people who are as upbeat as me."

Katae nodded her head as he gave his explanation, "I see, so you like to use a sense of humor to lighten the mood. That can be a valuable asset especially when you find yourself in a bad situation. Which you will find yourself in, its just a fact of the job. I see no reason why you can not continue doing so aboard the Aeon.

Where do you see yourself going in your career? Do you have any goals?"

"I understand that, ma'am. I know this job isn't about good times and victory celebrations. From the shape of the ship, I can see that things are difficult," Takamori said. He did not say anything for a while, pondering what his goals were.

"I want to see the galaxy. Maybe advance in rank but as far as I can see, I don't plan to leave the Star Army, even if the war and my enlistment ended."

"Ok last question, do you have any questions for me?" This was one of Katae's favorite questions to ask.

Asking for his questions. A situation where he might be damned if he did and damned if he did not. So, why not? "Ma'am, would it be alright if I shared the sake I bought on the station with the crew? To toast your fallen comrade? If that's appropriate." He had meant the alcohol to be a party starter but in light of the ship's state, toasting the honoured dead seemed a better use.

Katae considered Takamori's request for a moment. "Well, while I appreciate the sentiment I do not think Shina Kim-Hei would appreciate being toasted for dying. She is currently being restored from her last mental backup. Which since that subject has come up, I expect all my crew members to keep a mental backup, and to have it current. I lost many new crew members when this war died because they were new, and hadn't gotten around to creating a backup. I would suggest that you might want to use your offering as a way of breaking the ice instead."

He had done it now. Takamori thought he had screwed up once again when the Captain had mentioned the mental backup. Then, when she mentioned using the sake as an ice-breaker, he was shocked. Maybe he wasn't going to be in trouble for admitting to possessing alcohol after all.

She looked at her datapad and tapped it a few times. "Saito-Hei, I believe that you will be a good addition to the crew. Oshiro Arkase-Nitô Heisho is the leader of the Infantry. You would do well to listen to any advise he gives you. It will no doubt save your life one day. In addition, given your training in demolition you will be assigned Armory Duty. It will be your responsibility that the Armory is kept organized, inventory accurate and all items properly stowed.

For now, I would suggest that you take sometime to meet the rest of the crew. Welcome aboard the Aeon."

That was his cue. Takamori stood up and said, "Thank you, Ise-Taisa. I am glad to be aboard." He bowed, waiting for her to dismiss him. He had survived. This was definitely more nerve-wracking than any of the other job interviews he had. If all went well, Takamori felt that this could be the start of the best job in his life.

Katae paused for a moment and then slid a couple of ship patches over to Takamori. She stood and gave him a slight bow, "You are welcome Saito-Santô Hei. Next time I see you, I expect you to be wearing one of those on your uniform. Dismissed."

Arai Saki

Interview - Arai Saki

Katae was seated at one of the tables in the main Wardroom on the Squadron's starbase. The Kyoten was as close to getting back to home port as the Aeon could hope for with their true home base still blockaded.

She looked at the datapad for her next interviewee. The second of three new Infantry for her gunship. It was almost time for her to arrive. She motioned to one of the attendants in the wardroom to bring her a fresh cup of coffee. Taking a sip she thought wistfully of Sachi's special blend.

She put the cup down, perused the information on the datapad and waited.

Saki was very nervous. She never did something like this. An interview? What if it went wrong? Would they send her back for more training? Or put her to some desk-job? Saki shivered on that thought. She slowly walked towards the door where Ise-Taii waited and carefully knocked.

Katae was monitoring her new prospective member courtesy of the station AI on her pad. Knocking, really, on a isolation door more than three centimeters thick.... she thought amused at the image. Seeing that Saki was an NH-29, she wondered if she might want to send a note to the instructors at SATA on doors, but dismissed it. Instead she sent a mental command to the computer.

From the hallway speakers the station AI spoke, "Aria Saki-Santô Hei, you may enter the Taisa is ready for you."

Saki didn't even realized that her knock could not be head on other side. She was used to knock on doors back in training facilities and Fort Ready. But doors here were something else. Maybe if Saki would not be so nervous she would even realized that.

When the doors slid to the side Saki walked inside and quickly bowed deep. "Santo-Hei Arai Saki reporting," she said. Her voice sounded a little weak and leaked a little of her nervousness to the outside world. And captain's ears.

Katae took a moment before returning the bow. She fixed her green eyes on Saki and took not of the Hei's body language. "At ease Santô Hei."

Saki raised her head straightening herself up. She was straight as a ruler and looked directly in front of herself. She was in the presence of a high ranking officer after all.

"Take a seat Arai-Hei." Katae said motioning to the one opposite her.

Saki made few stiff steps towards the chair and sat down. Her back was still straight and she looked in front of herself, her hands resting in her laps. She was focusing to not play with her fingers, which could show more of her nervousness. "Thank you ma'am," she said after sitting down.

Katae noted biometrics of the NH-29 in front of her, she was used to some nervousness, but this was on an order higher. Of course, this is the first batch of recruits I've had since my promotion.... "Hei, do me a favor, and take a couple of breaths and relax I can not conduct this interview if you faint on me." she said with a hint of a smile.

Saki managed to smile nervously. "Sorry Ma'am," she said and for first time truly looked into her possible future captain's eyes. "It is just that this is very important to me. I wish so much to be successful here that I worry about... well about everything." She said in the end. Oh I hope I did not get out of line too much now. She thought.

Katae pulled up Saki's training record, she saw some things that interested her. "So, I see that during your Power Armor training, you took the initiative, and started giving orders to your class mates. I would like to hear your explanation for that." She looked at Saki and steepled her fingers in front of herself.

Saki took a few seconds to think. She needed to remember that moment and as a Neko she remembered it perfectly. "It was an impulse ma'am," she started answering and lowered her eyes to steepled fingers, "We took heavy lossess from the enemy shocktrooper and our team-leader's comm went dead. We needed to cooperate to survive so I just tried to organize us. It was not really ordering." She finished, looked back in Taisa's eyes and finally seemed to calm down a little.

Military stuff and works. She felt confident there, she would not lie and had nothing to hide at all. Truth was that the she did not mind being in command, but she also did not do it because she wanted to lead. She just though someone had to take the initiative. And nor Keiko nor Toshiaki seemed to be up for it.

"That sounds like a very good answer. You assessed the situation quickly and came up with a solution in an attempt to complete your mission and save your team. That is the kind of trait I am looking for in my crew. Situations can change rapidly and usually in unexpected ways. Adapting to the need is vital." She paused.

"Thank you ma'am," Saki answered and continued. "But it was not just me. Yamauchi-hei and Maeda-hei did their best too. I made a mistake right at the start for choosing Daisy for space combat." She didn't want to hide anything. And to this day she don't remember their trainers to mention that the simulation will be in space. But that was her mistake too.

"So did you choose Infantry, or were you predesignated?"

"I was predesignated ma'am." She responded to her best. "Or at least I think so, since from the day I was born I was trained in combat."

"Well, that can be said for most manufactured NH's Hei... Since you are being assigned to the Aeon, you are of course
Space Infantry. But we have seen our share of combat on the ground as well. Tell me about the Accident that 'killed' the team." Katae inquired, she knew what was in the report, but she wanted to see how Saki reacted to talking about it, to judge how she dealt with failure.

"It was in infantry training ma'am." Saki started describing the situations. Her eyes shifted in frown a little. It was not a moments she was fond of. "We were on a ship being boarded by enemy troops. After arming ourselves we encountered enemy in vehicle bay. Tanaka-hei took a role of team leader on himself and issued orders to everyone. Me and Yamauchi-hei were to engage two enemy troopers, while he and Maeda-hei attacked enemy who making a run for a tankette. Enemy got in tankette but dropped a EMP-bomb she was carrying. Tanaka-hei took a bomb and attached it to tankette in attempt to destroy it. He did not realized it was strong enough to destroy whole ship. He then ordered me, Maeda-hei and Yamauchi-hei to take cover. We did so withough knowing how he was going to disable the tankette. I was worried about what he used so I asked him. When he told, me what he used to bomb I tried to destroy it with my flamethrower but ti was too late. Also that was not good choice since, my fire actually made it explode." She finished her tiring story. She actually did not want to speak about the end, since it would make her look like the clever one, but she though Taisa should hear the whole story.

"So, what did you learn from that exercise?" Katae asked leaning forward in her seat.

"Truthfully ma'am?" She asked back. "I think we should have worked more like a team. We were not truly well coordinated from the start. We were bunch on individual soldier who were put in battle. One of use took lead and other listened to him, but since none of us was really experienced in leading we should have... not really checked what other do, but keep eye on ourselves. I don't know if I made myself very clear now. I just think that it was mistake of all of us. That we should have taken care about ourselves better." That was her full answer. Nervousness seemed to be gone for now. "I also would not mind if the ship operators would vent us out in the space, because it would have a meaning, but we did not told them, they did not know about the bomb. So in our foolish attempt to destroy one tankette we killed whole ship." she finished in the end.

"Hmm..." Katae stood up from her chair and walked around the table and stood next to Saki. "Which is one reason we train you in simulations, your mistakes are less costly."

"But it sounds like you learned a great deal in that failure. You learned the importance of working together, in a coordinated fashion. Being a soldier means one thing, we are all part of a team, and we are only as strong as the weakest member of our team. But that doesn't mean we get rid of that person. This Tanaka-Hei sounds like he thought he had a good idea, but he failed to communicate.

I already told you I appreciate candor and initiative. But recklessness is NOT something I tolerate or can afford. A very simple solution would have been to simply open the hatch to the vehicle bay and let explosive decompression blow the tank right out of the bay.

Oshiro Arkase-Ittô Heisho is the head of the Infantry on board the Aeon. And I can tell you that he would probably have shot Tanaka-Hei before he would let him set that bomb."

Katae paused and looked into Saki's eyes letting what she had said register.

"Now, before I conclude this interview, do you have any questions for me?"

Saki looked at the officer next to her. She needed a few seconds to summarize what Taisa just told to her. "Ma'am if I can be frank, how are new-crew member looked upon on the ship? I am a little worried about that. Should I be ready to be treated like an... intruder of a kind? Or am I just worrying too much? I am not really experienced with this Taisa." She then looked down as if she was apologizing for her question. Baka, how could you even ask that?[i/] Was a though that came through her mind.

Katae took a moment to consider the question, she considered it a very good question. She was aware of how some ships treated new soldiers, especially those that were manufactured.

"I already told you I appreciate candor as long as it is done respectfully. This is a good question in my book. Onboard the Aeon, every soldier is valued. I do not take people onto my crew that have nothing to contribute. However, that being said, I also have high expectations. Every soldier is expected to give me their best, and I hold myself to that same code. You give me your best when we are on a mission. I will do my best to ensure we succeed, and live to fight another day."

Katae took out two Aeon patches from her pocket and placed them on the table in front of Saki. "I think you will be a valuable asset to my crew Arai-Santô Hei."

Saki quickly stood up and bowed to Ise. "It is an honor Taisa. I will do all I can during my time in your crew." She said and her voice was full of awe. I made it![i/] Was a joyful thought in her mind.

"The Aeon is scheduled to leave in thirty-six hours. So you have until 18:00 hours tomorrow to report for duty. Take some time to relax, maybe do some shopping while you have the chance." Katae said returning the bow.

"Thank you ma'am," Saki answered and picked up patches from the table. She then waited to be relieved, not sure if Taisa had something more to say.

"You are dismissed Santô Hei."

Saki just quickly bowed to Taisa and left the room to attach the patches. Future suddenly looked more bright.

Tanaka Yoshiro

Location: Kyoten Starbase, Veronica System
Time: 1100 hrs

Katae sat in one of the unused offices on the Kyoten. She was reviewing the latest updates on the repairs for the Aeon. While the damage was bad, it was by no means the worst that the Aeon had endured in her service.

She was also looking at the data for the upcoming mission. She made a few notes to pick up some extra equipment, she had a definite feeling they were going to need it. Once she was done, she looked at the folder on her desk. Tanaka Yoshiro-Santô Hei was on the top of the folder. Last of the new recruits, a Yamataian. Well he should be here shortly. she thought.

Placing the folder down, she picked up the cup of coffee that Sachi had brought her and took a deep inhale of the aroma. "After drinking the stuff they serve here, I am tempted to give Nami-Hei a promotion just for this cup." she murmured to herself.

Yoshiro had arrived and knocked on the door. He had showered and put on his dress uniform as he was unsure as to what to wear but he wanted to look his best do he went with this. He was nervous to be sure, but he hid it well and prepared to meet the Taisa and get this interview started.

"Tanaka- Santo Hei reporting as ordered." He said as he swallowed a big gulp of air.

Katae took a last sip from the cup, set it down and instructed the AI to send in the recruit. Let's see how he handles himself.

The door to the office slid open, from the speakers in the hallway came a male voice. "Tanaka-Hei, Ise-Taisa will see you now."

"Thank you.." He said and then stepped inside. He bowed low to the Taisa. He tried not to fidget but seeing the Taisa he was a bit intimidated with the sight. He knew that she had been through a lot of fighting and he was just a green, wet behind the ears Santo Hei, he failed miserably. His hands were moving a mile a minute and then suddenly he stopped. Realizing where he was he gained some form of composure and waited for the bow to be returned. "Tanaka-Santo Hei reporting as ordered, Taisa." He said and then waited for the Taisa to say something.

Katae watched the Yoshiro walk in, it was painfully obvious that he was nervous. But at least he remember to bow without having to be prompted and did not salute like a Nepleslian. She let a brief smile cross her face as she returned his bow with a much shallower one given her station.

"Take a seat Tanaka-Santo-Hei, and we can begin. I have a number of questions that I want answered before I decide if I believe you will work well on the Aeon." Katae said motioning to the chair.

He sat down in the chair and waited respectfully for the Taisa to ask whatever questions that she had. He knew to answer as honestly and respectfully as possible.

"This is pretty much my normal question for any non-Nekovaklyrja. What was your reason for joining the Star Army of Yamatai?" She asked picking up her cup of coffee and taking a sip while keeping her green eyes locked onto Yoshiro.

"The fact is, Taisa is that I have an example to set. When I was young and stupid I use to do rebellious things. I use to steal and cause major problems for my fellow citizens. To put things bluntly, I just didn't care about anyone or anything other than myself." He said and stopped to think. "When my sister and brother were born I felt the need to change. I couldn't do what I did and expect to feel good about myself anymore. I wanted to set a better example and to give my nation what I felt that I owed her. I wanted to be better than who I was and try to become something other than a spoiled child who thinks that the world owes him more than he owes the world."

Katae listened to Yoshiro, making mental note of the more salient aspects. "I see that sounds very honorable, and I do believe in giving people a second chance. Are you prepared to lay down your life to protect your fellow soldiers, your ship? Are you prepared to possible be stranded on some godforsaken planet because your ship goes down? Being in the Star Army sounds great, the news makes it sound like its all Glory and Honor. But its a lot grittier than that."

"I knew what I signed up for, Taisa. The news is great and all but I made the decision knowing all of that. My parents knew it as well and the did not agree with my decision, but that is a story for another time unless you want to hear it." Yoshiro said "As for the rest I know that it would be dangerous and that it wasn't all going to be sunshine and cherry blossoms but I am going to go through hell and high water to protect those that I love, my fellow citizens, and my nation. I know that it won't be easy but I will give everything that I have and more before I let any enemies of Yamatai do harm to that which I care for."

"You may be called to do just that. But hopefully not anytime soon. You have explained to me the reason you chose to join. Now what are your plans for the future? Do you have any goals?"

"My goal is to take over my father's business when I get out and help others. If that doesn't work out I may just rejoin and serve the Star Army again." Yoshiro said "I just want to get some discipline in my life before I do anything. I just hope that I can do all of that before I get too old." He grinned at that and caught himself and got serious again.

"A sensible goal, so for now you just plan to serve out your contract then return to civilian life. There are worse goals a person could have. At least you seem to have a good head on your shoulders." Katae picked up the personnel jacket and reviewed the contents once more.

"Why should I take you onto my crew? In your own opinion, tell me what you think you have to offer?" she said with a bit of menace in her eyes.

"I am willing to sacrifice myself for the good of the crew and my fellow soldiers to accomplish the mission. I will do whatever it takes to see my fellow shipmates safe even if it means me having to hold off a fleet of enemy ships with no more than a toothpick and a grenade." Yoshiro said meeting the Taisa's eyes with a determined gaze of his own. He was adamant on that fact. "Like I said before, Taisa I will give my all to the ship and her crew before I let the enemies of Yamatai harm anyone or anything that belong to Yamatai. I may not be the most tactical thinker in the fleet or the sharpest tool in the shed but I will do everything that I can to defeat our enemies and if I am the only one left I will take as many enemies that I can with me before I fall."

"Let me clarify, I'm not looking for a martyr, and we already established you are willing to die. I want to know what you think is your best trait, or ability."

"Oh..." Yoshiro said now looking a bit sheepish. "I am willing to work, Taisa. That is the one thing that my dad taught me. If the repair crews need help and I am available I can help, even in a combat situation for an example. I am a willing to do anything that I can to help the crew and make their lives a little less miserable in this time of war. That I am also willing to learn. I have made some mistakes due to being overeager and I wanted to prove myself." He thought for a moment about his graduation exercise and his failure to grasp the tactical situation and in using an EMP bomb to disable a vehicle, pretty much destroyed the ship and all the ones that were on that mission. He sighed and sat back in his chair, the memory saddening him.

"Well, that means you have the right mindset. The Aeon is more than just our ship, its part of us. Everyone has a responsibility to fix what they can in combat and after. And all hands are expected to help with housekeeping." Katae said, she reached into a drawer on the desk and pulled out a pair of Aeon patches. "Tanaka-Santo Hei, I have decided that to give you a chance, the opportunity you seem to be looking for." She slid the patches across the table."Oshiro Arkase-Nitô Heisho is in charge of the Infantry. So he is your immediate superior. The Aeon is in for repairs so you are free to make use of the starbase facilities. You may also wish to spend some time with your crew mates. As soon as the repairs are complete we will be shipping out again."

"Thank you Taisa. I'll make sure to do my very best for your ship!" He said and bowed low waiting for her to return the bow.

Katae returned the bow. "You are dismissed Santo-Hei."

He left the room and placed the pins on his uniform. All he had to do now was to talk to one of his crew mates and get that out of the way so that there would be no bad blood or at least they could work together. But for now he was happy and decided to go and celebrate.

Honda Makoto

Location: Virtual Conference
ON
Katae was sitting in her cabin on the Aeon. She was reading the briefing for their upcoming mission, when Eternity advised her that there was a transfer in process. But the individual was not physically able to attend prior to departure.

With some coordination, Katae was able to arrange to meet with Honda Makoto by volumetrics. If she accepted him, he would take a transport to meet the ship en-route.

"Honda Makoto, Santo-hei, reporting as ordered, ma'am," spoke the man on the other end. His voice was pleasant and calm but still imbibed with a sense of purpose from his clipped, military tones.

The Yamataian man named Honda Makoto was still aboard the YSS Hokorimasu, flagship of the 8th Standard Fleet. He had been ordered to the 1st Expeditionary Fleet, leaving him feeling more than a little unwanted. He had thought he had done well enough in his first combat but it seemed that temporarily getting lost and separated from his squad was not acceptable.

But, Makoto had some pride left in him. He would not let Ise-taisa know of his disappointment.

"At ease Honda-Hei, this is an interview not a board of inquiry. This is my opportunity to get to know you as a person. I've got access to your service record. But I am more interested in what's not in it." Katae replied with a warm smile. "Please feel free to speak candidly when answering my questions."Let's get started, here is my first question. Why did you choose to join the service?"

"Yes ma'am," he took a breath and let his shoulder muscles relax a bit. Makoto tried to smile. It was not what he'd been expecting. The crew he'd met on the Hokorimasu had been much less friendly than Ise-taisa and the hierarchy was clear. It was strange, in a way but good.

"I felt it was necessary. I'd been a forest ranger, working against poachers looking to make money from animal hides and big game hunters trying to add another trophy to their collection on the sly. Worked with kids for the summer camps, teaching them how to fish, that kind of thing. It's good work and I enjoyed it but ... I suppose it bothered me that I was enjoying myself while others were risking their lives. So I signed up for the duration plus six months. When this is over, I'm going back to the ranger job."

Katae's eyes narrowed for a moment as she wondered about his comment about hunters. "That is interesting, although there is nothing wrong with enjoying work. And working in a capacity that helps raise childen to be aware of things is an honorable one. But I can appreciate your dislike of poachers. I come from a family of hunters, but we practice sustainable hunting.

How would you summarize your prior assignment?" she asked.

"No offense intended, ma'am. But these are hunters without permits or ones looking to kill some of the protected species for 'the sport of it'. The park specifically forbade all hunting since we used it as a camp for kids. Stray bullets and children don't mix.

"As for my last It was... larger and in a way, more close-knit. All the squad members knew each other, they were veterans and I was fresh from Fort Ready. I was the outsider so I can't say I felt welcome. I got lost from the group in a combat mission, where multiple squads engaged large numbers of NMX space forces and no one but the unit coordinator on the Hokorimasu cared to find me. It did not make me feel like I was worth the training."

Makoto breathed and realized how bad he sounded, speaking ill of others. "But I fully acknowledge that it was my fault for getting separated from my unit. I believe that is why I was transferred, ma'am. I apologize that you receiving a useless soldier."

"I do not consider anyone who wears that uniform to be useless... until such time as they give me good cause. It sounds to me that your old unit failed you. A new recruit should have been paired up with a senior soldier. I did my share of infantry work when I first enlisted. We always kept an eye on the new guy. So that being said I do not plan to hold what happened to you on your last ship against you. You are starting with a clean slate aboard the Aeon. Once you get with us you will train with the infantry, and you be paired up with someone on all missions.

Now, you may want to take a moment to think before you answer. But what do you think is your single best attribute or ability that you bring to my ship?" She inquired.

"Thank you, ma'am." Makoto said, wondering what his best attribute was. "I will give everything my all, ma'am. I cannot say whether I am a good soldier or not but I swear you will have my fullest efforts in all our endeavors. Be it fighting or playing music or beating another ship's soccer team, I will do my utmost."

He felt weird saying that. No one had cared about his personal likes or dislikes, his attributes, on the Hokorimasu. There, he'd just been a cog, blending into the background and overshadowed by the more boisterous veterans.

Katae listened to Makoto. "That is what I ask of every one who steps onto the Aeon. I promise to give my best, and I hold everyone to the same standard. Also once you are with us, do not be afraid to speak up. When we hold a planning meeting, everyone has the right to be heard."

"That will take some getting used to, ma'am. In Lion Squad, we just did what we were told. I... appreciate your generosity. If I may be so bold to ask, what exactly does First XF do that differs from the other fleets?" Makoto asked.

"Well dpending on circumstances, we tend to operate on the edge of known space. Prior to the War the Aeon was assign to Exploration duty. Something I was enjoying, but now our exploration is usually to locate and identify NMX assets. And we engage the enemy where we are able."

"I understand, ma'am. I look forward to serving with you. Please ask whatever other questions you have of me," Makoto replied with a slight bow.

"One last question, you said you plan to return to civilian life when the war is over. However, I would like to know what goals you have while you are in the Star Army? Are you content to stay in Infantry, or are you hoping to move up and out of that role?"

"I ... I am not sure, ma'am. I hadn't thought about it. I'll go where the Star Army needs me. This is, hopefully, temporary so I didn't give much thought as to how high I might go. For now, I guess I'm content just being Infantry." Makoto was impressed by what the woman was asking. She was truly making him dig deep to find out what he himself wanted. No one had gone quite as far as she.

"Very well. If that should change, please feel free to contact me." she said and paused to look at something off screen. "I have decided that I will take you onboard the Aeon. Everyone deserves a fair chance to prove themselves. So this will be your chance."

"Yes, ma'am. Thank you, ma'am. Where shall I instruct the shuttle pilot to drop me off? I had heard the Aeon had been dispatched on a mission. 8th Fleet's area of control is adjacent to 1st XF's. I can meet you at mission site."

"I look forward to meeting you in person then." Katae then instructed Eternity to relay to their new soldier the coordinates of their next mission.

Stamoules, Athena

Location: Veronica Star System
Kyoten Starbase, Conference Room

ON
0800 hrs

Katae sat in the Conference room of the squadron's Ikoi Starbase. She was reviewing the after mission reports on their recent foray into UOC space. The intelligence reports had said that anarchy was pretty much the rule in the outer colonies. But between the NMX blockades, an apparent coup within the government, the situation was actually much worse. From the information Eternity provided to her, the situation was no better in the more populous systems.

After signing the various documents she was required to attend to, awards and promotions and the like, She looked at what was next on her queue. Interview with Stamoules, Athena-Santô Hei was on the screen, she opened the file and began to read. "Elysian?" She said out loud. It was only a matter of time for personnel to get around to assigning one to us. she thought. Elysians were part of the Empire and had the right to enlist and serve. But she could not help but be concerned especially after receiving word from the Aeon's sister ship the Eucharis, about their recent attempt to integrate an Elysian into their crew.

For a moment she considered dismissing the individual out of hand not wanting to have to deal with the special needs, but it had been a while since the Aeon had a true medic onboard. She decided to wait until she had a chance to interview this Elysian and determine for herself if she would be more trouble than she was worth.

Athena had been slightly anxious about this upcoming interview with her new commanding officer ever since coming on board the starbase. Not so much because the Taisa vastly outranked her. No one of the things running through her mind was wither she would even be accepted. It is hard to be a missionary when the masses do not even accept you as one of them. Not to mention her job as a medic would be very difficult, not to mention Yamataians by nature generally did not believe in their creator.

Coming up to the conference room door, Athena silenced the thoughts racing in her head to gain some clarity. Smoothing out her Type 30B uniform before knocking firmly on the door, She stood at attention while waiting to be allowed in.

Katae took a sip from her cup of coffee and gimaced. What the crew of the Kyoten did to coffee was a crime in her mind. She pushed the cup to the side of the table. Took a moment to relax, she pulled up an image of the ISC Tanoshimi in its construction berth. She liked the ship's clean lines. She was not sure when she would have the occasion to spend time on the ship, but it was nice to have it when she did.

"Ise-Taisa, your replacement crew member has arrived and is waiting for your permission to enter." Ishi the starbases' AI chimed.

"Thank you Ishi, please inform Stamoules-Santô Hei she may enter when ready." she replied

From the speakers in the the hallway, the starbases' AI Ishi chimed it, "Ise-Taisa is ready for your interview. You may enter when ready."
The door to the office opened, it revealed a small spartan office, with a simple desk. A plain padded chair was positioned in front of the desk facing it. Seated at the desk was a black haired, emerald green eyed Nekovalkyrja. Her hair was shoulder length, and streak of hair on her right was brown. The individual was wearing a Type 30 Female Bodysuit Uniform.

"Ise-Taisa is ready for your interview. You may enter when ready." Athena did not bother to look the speakers and proceded to walk in a brisk march that someone with confidence and pride in themselves would have. She stopped two feet from the plain chair and bowed to the required depth of Katae's rank, though she did not break eye contact. Her wings moved only so slightly in a salute.

"Santo-Hei Athena Stamoules reporting as ordered ma'am" Athena spoke with a thick Elysian accent after she returned to attention. Even as she stood rigid, she was examining the Neko sitting in front of her with her peripheral vision. A Neko, why am I not surprised. This should be interesting.. she thought to herself.

Katae watched the Elysian enter the room. She was glad to see that the individual entered the room with conviction and performed her preferred method of respect the bow, she even noted that the recruit included a bit of her Elysian culture by moving the wings as well.

"Have a seat Santô Hei and we will commence with the interview." She said

Athena eyed the chair for a quick moment. She could tell she was going to be uncomfortable getting comfortable in the chair thanks to her wings. She would much prefer to stand as she is used to that. But for the time being she would obey quickly without opening her mouth. Spreading her wings out as far as the room would permit without hitting anything, Athena quickly sat down and returned her wings into their normal rest position. She waited tentatively for Katae's questions.
Katae watched Athena as she sat, and made a mental note that if she accepted Athena to get a chair that would accomodate her better in the Wardroom. "Please answer these questions candidly. What prompted your decision to join the Star Army of Yamatai? Especially given the history our two people have had over the years."

"Honestly....I am looking for excitement. I could have been a junior officer in what is left of the Celestial Navy. But what good would I do for my people or the galaxy as a whole there?" Athena stated rather boldly.
That is a first, never had anyone use that reason before. Katae thought, "I see. Do you believe that you can fit in with a crew comprised of Nepleslians, Yamataians and Nekovalkyrja?"

"While I am inclined that non-Elysians have lesser lost eternal essences, that does no mean I can not work with them. Makes for a lonely existance if you can not at least tolerate those of differing opinions." Athena answered. What is she getting at? Athena thought to herself.

"I have to admit I have a few reservations about taking an Elysian on board. Especially given the recent events with an Elysian aboard our sister ship. But I am not going to judge you by what happened there.
Would you say that you are loyal to the Empire of which Elysia is now a part of?"

"If my people's leaders feel it is fit to return to the embrace of the Yamatai Empire, who am I so lowly to question their motives. I am loyal to Elysian Empire and the Elysian Empire is the Yamatai Empire. I do have a question ma'am, what problems did your sister ship have with the Elysian aboard?" Athena asked, turning her head ever so slightly out of curiosity.

"The Elysian was one Michael Papadopoulos. His service record was attrocious. He was cited several times for failure to obey orders, disrespect, conduct unbecoming a soldiers, and was finally Dishonorably Discharged for Misconduct. His attitude towards not only the Empire but the Ketsurui Clan were nothing short of insulting. But then he was older and had spent more time in the Elysian Military.

What do you mean by non-Elysians have lesser lost eternal essences? And are you comfortable in social situations? The crew of Aeon not only works together, but often participates in social activities." Katae said as she regarded the young woman.

Athena laughed when she heard Katae finished going over what the other Elysian had done and her question. "Quod rejiciunt plennus.." Athena stated under her breath in Seraphim more to herself then to Katae. "Serves him right. My religion teaches that this world and us were all created by our heavenly father and Elysians were chosen by him to be it's steward. We are all apart of him, just we are higher due to our responsibilities." Athena said once she regained her composure.

"I hope to be able to show the light to others, but my religious beliefs will not interfere with my duties within the Star Army if people do not want to listen. Not here to force a religion down their throats....does not end well. As for being social, I can be quite social if the need is required." Athena continued keeping her golden eyes set on Katae. Athena did not want to come across as arrogant in regard to her religion, but she was not about to back down either.

Katae listened to Athena, not just what she was saying, but how she said it. So far I like this crew member. she thought.

"I can accept that, there is nothing wrong with sharing ideas. "Follow those guidelines and I do not see where we will have a problem. Will you have any any ethical problems with getting involved in combat with your Religious or Medical paradigm? Medics often have to go with the Away team, and if the Away team gets into a combat situation, where do you stand?"

Athena's lips and face became a little predatory when asked about combat. "You do not have to worry about me cowering in fear ma'am. While I am to help all that need my aid, I shall destroy my enemies before that comes into play. If that fails, I will bandage them up after I treat those of higher priority. I am curious if you have a power armor more suitable for my....physiology." Athena said as she slightly moved her wings to illustrate the point.

"I was not implying that you were a coward. But some medical personnel feel that shooting people is contrary to their calling as a healer. My basic rule is we are soldiers first, and whatever our specific job second. Pending completion of this interview, and my deciding to take you on as a member of the crew, I will requisition an MCAS for Elysian physiology." Katae made a few annotations on her datapad.
"Last question, what would you say is your most valuable attribute that you will bring to the crew of the Aeon?"

"This may come as a shock ma'am, but I truthfully do not know how to answer that question. I could go on with a speech about my exploits in my medical training, my history of training with military weapons since I was a small child, or the junior officer training I have recieved. But those are just my hard skills. I am more then willing to prove my worth and that some Elysians can work with other species without butting heads every two seconds." Athena responded back. She wasn't about blowing steam up another's skirt and she was not about to ruin that record right now. All else fail, she could always go to the tenth fleet.

"Nothing wrong with that Santô Hei, I prefer an honest answer anytime." Katae made a few more annotatoins on the datapad and hit the transmit key.

"I personally believe that diversity makes for a stronger crew, so I have decided to accept your posting on the Aeon. I will notify the ship's MEGAMI Eternity to add you to the roster.

Welcome aboard, I look forward to seeing how you fit in." Katae said with a grin.

Haden, Elliot

Location: Veronica Star System
Kyoten Starbase, Conference Room
ON
0900 hrs
Katae sat in the Conference room of the squadron's Ikoi Starbase. She was reading the service jacket for one Elliot Haden, another potential crew member. Infantry, again. I'm starting to feel like I am commanding a troop ship. she thought with a grin. There was always work for Infantry and the Aeon always found a use for its crew.

There was a chime from the hatch, on the other side a Nepleslian stood. He looked as if he hadn't slept in a few days, while the shirt he was wearing was Star Army issue the pants where not, a familiar pair of digital pattern urban BDUs in their stead. The issued pair... well it was the third he'd lost that week.

"State your name." came from the speakers above the door, from the MEGAMI of the starbase.

Elliot glanced up toward the voice, "Uh.. Elliot, Elliot Haden, reporting to see one... uh.. Katae! Shes the skipper right?" he asked.

"Ise-Taisa is the commander of the Aeon, and the 7th Squadron. I will notify her of your presence." the AI replied.

"Ise-Taisa, there is a Santo-Hei at the door by the name of Elliot Haden. He is scheduled for an interview with you."

Katae looked up and punched up the volumetric display of the soldier in the hallway. "Is this some kind of joke? He seriously comes to an interview dressed like that..." she said in a voice that held menace.
Unaware of the anger he was inflicting Elliot stood lazily for a few moments before turning back to where the AI had spoken from. "Is she busy? I can come back later." His voice hinted toward fatigue, long shuttle flights where not the Nepleslian's favored method of travel.
Katae shook her head, "Ishi we may as well get this over with. Tell him to come in."

"Santo-Hei Haden, Ise-Taisa will see you now. Enter when ready." came the AI's voice from the speakers.

The Nepleslian nodded, opening door and stepping through the threshold. He turned to face the only other person in the room, whom he assumed, if the file in his head was accurate, was one Taisa Ise Katae. "Elliot Haden reporting as ordered ma'am," he had managed to muster a decently confident tone.

Katae watched as the Nepleslian walked into the room. She took careful note of his appearance, which in person looked worse than it did on the display. She kept her expression neutral while she waited for him to salute or bow. She would give him a moment more before she spoke.
Elliot saluted after he finished, assuming something akin to parade rest as he looked behind the captain to the bulkhead waiting for some order or initial conversation. He wasn't much for activities of this nature, he'd rather be on the ground somewhere in the mud.

"Something happen to your baggage Santo-Hei?" Katae said with a voice that was mostly void of emotion, as her eyes did another sweep of his appearance.

Elliot glanced down at this and had a realization, "Shit, forgot to change." He muttered quietly. "I uh.... Oops. heh" he started rubbing the back of his head and smiled goofily. "Long flight." He had virtually no excuse and lieing would have probably bad this bad impression all the more worse.
"Oops..." Katae could not believe what she was hearing. I'm tempted to have him tossed in the brig... really?

"Santo-Hei, take a seat. We will continue with this interview. Although I will say your appearance leaves much to be desired in my book."
Awkward would probably be the word that summed up the situation, at least for Elliot. He took the nearest chair, sitting up straight as he waited for whatever the Taisa had planned or planned to do.

"What prompted you to join the Star Army?" she inquired.
The answer was prompt and almost humorous, "I like to solve problems in an explosive manner, Star Army is one of the few organizations that makes this legal."

"By that I presume you mean Demolitions. Although it has been my experience that most of the Demolitions experts I have known while occasionally a bit eccentric, are usually very meticulous. What experience have you had with explosives?"

"The improvised type for the most part, on the spot modification of materials toward a specific job, novel stuff basically." Said Elliot, his eyes starting to wander around the room.

"The ability to improvise is a useful one. How are you with working with a group? in a team dynamic?"

"Depends on the team really ma'am, most groups I've worked with tend to say I'm a likeable guy so I guess I'm fairly well working with groups.... though I did blow this one Sergeants pants off once." The memory seemed to bring a smile to his face.

Katae listened to Elliot's response. "Do you have a problem with sergeants? or authority figures in general Santo-Hei."

"Oh no ma'am, I follow orders." He realized that little birthday prank was probably something he shouldn't have mentioned.

"That's good to hear. Any problem dealing with other races? We have a mixture on the Aeon, and who knows what the future will bring."

'So it'll be just like the old days.' Elliot thought, remembering the time with a certain PMC, "No problems here ma'am, as long as they don't get between me and my job."

Katae looked at the service jacket before her, and considered the answers that Elliot had provided. "Before I give you my decision, do you have any questions for me?"

"No ma'am."

"Okay Santo-Hei Haden, I am going to give you a chance. However, the next time I see you I expect it to be in a proper Star Army uniform, and one that does not look like it has been rolled up on a duffel bag. Understood?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Then you are dismissed. If you need new uniforms speak with one of the people under Izanami - Shoi." Katae said as she closed the screen and sent a message to Eternity.

Elliot stood quickly and saluted before turning and making his way toward the hatch. He was back in the corridor a moment later. A slight bit of regret seeping in over not turning in his resignation paperwork after the fiasco of his last assignment.

Vis'Thraugh, Araan

Veronica Star System
Kyoten Starbase in Orbit over Ronica

ON

Katae sat in one of the conference rooms about the Seventh Squadron's Starbase. It was good to be back in familiar surroundings
The Ship was in the bay being repaired, thankfully the damage from this last foray was light. She was grateful for that. She had one personnel assignment to review. "Another infantry? Doesn't Star Army Personnel realize the Aeon is an exploration ship." she said to herself, it wasn't like their missions did not seem to keep needing the Infantry, but Katae was longing to get back to the pleasure of exploring a new world.

She took a moment to review the service jacket. Former Nepleslian, well our Pilot will enjoy having someone to talk to about the good old times... she mused.

Katae checked with Eternity on the status of the new recruit. "Taisa, Vis'Thraugh-Santô Hei is traveling aboard the YSS Provider, a Nougaktu-Class which is bringing provisions to Ronica. Perhaps we can acquire some fresh food for the galley." the MEGAMI suggested.

Taking just a few moments to get his bearing Araan looked around himself, eyes ablaze as he saw the myriad of things that had now made themselves natural surroundings. Though they surprised him at this point they shouldn't, having undergone not one, but two body transfers since the day he'd been rescued off of that 'slaver' ship. This was the world he lived in now, no longer the squalor he had lived in planetside and even far more removed from the torture of those ships, being crated from planet to planet like freight.

"Just what have I managed to get myself into?" He asked himself quietly with a grin plastered on his face, his hand holding at his side for a moment, as if to check for his service weapon. Old habits die hard.

A Jôtô Hei Nekovalkyrja with long dark brown hair with yellow panels on her uniform looked up from a crate she was checking the contents of. "Fresh meat for the Taisa..." she murmured as she remembered her first encounter with the commander. "Guess I should welcome him, purple panels and all." She walked over to Araan with her blue eyes bright.

"Welcome to the Kyoten. Are you a transfer for the Aeon or one of the other ships in the squadron?" She inquired.

"Me? Yeah, I'm the new boot headed for the Aeon." He said with a curt nod as he stepped forward and proffered his hand, unsure if this custom held with the Yamataian peoples.

"Vis'Thraugh, Araan, Santô-Hei." He said with a rigid tone. "Pleasure."
Sachi smiled and took his hand, a bit unaccustomed to the gesture, with a slight bow she replied, "I am Nami Sachi-Jôtô Hei, the cook for the Aeon."

Replying in kind with a slight bow of his own, a custom to which he was still growing accustomed to, his face shifted from the rigidity one would expect of a wartorn Nepleslian to a smile that seemed uneasy on his face.

"What can you tell me about the Cap... I mean." He stuttered, trying to remember the proper nomenclature for their Army.

"I can tell you a lot about her, you can call her Captain, Taisa, Ma'am, Ise-Taisa. She loves her coffee. Ise-Taisa has a very simple rule on the Aeon. Do your best. She gives us her best, and she expects everyone under her to do the same." Sachi answered.

"Military through and through then, that's good, gives me a bit more knowledge of what to expect. And about yourself? You said you were a cook onboard?" He asked.

"Yes, that is my primary job. But I help out where ever I can. That is another thing the Taisa expects. If there is a job to be done, and you can help. Then you better do so."

"So everything here is a community effort then. Duties are often regulated out on duty sheets as well, correct? So if I forget exactly what it is I should be doing, I will have a note to check back on?" He asked, feeling a bit ridiculous.

He had been told when his body was augmented, or rather exchanged, that he would be able to recall things with more clarity, but where it was just a psychosomatic issue, or something even deeper set he had the slight problem of going off tangent and later having to recall what it was he was doing to start.

"Forget? If you start forgetting stuff, you better see the Medic. Depending on your job, some things are just expected. For example. As the cook, I know what I am expected to do during normal situations. As a member of the Infantry aboard the ship, you will probably spend a good amount of time training or helping with housekeeping. The Aeon is our home, and with a lot of people aboard, she needs to be kept clean. The Taisa will probably be assigning a new Squad leader before we ship out."

"So I'll get to see the chain of command in full before we ship back out again then, that's good. I understand this is an explor-." He started before she began to speak, realizing that he had somewhere to be.
"Well, if you are supposed to be here for an interview we best get you there, don't want to be late for that. I can lead you or the Kyoten's MEGAMI

Ishi can give you directions if you like. One important thing when you walk into the interview, be sure to report and bow. I know the regs say you can salute, but Ise-Taisa prefers bowing."

"Understood, thank you." He says before giving her one more bow.
'Ishi, can I get some guidance to Ise-Taisa's location please?' He asks partially under his breath, but mainly in thought, still trying to adjust to some of the body's inbuilt features.

"Certainly Santô-Hei, do you wish the downloaded to your communicator or to you directly?" Ishi inquired.

"Nearing seven months, you'd think I'd be used to this."
Following the MEGAMI's directions Araan soon found himself standing before a closed door to a conference room. "Leave your bags by the door before entering." Ishi's contralto voice said coming from the hall speakers.

Araan did as he was suggested to do by the MEGAMI, setting the rucksack and duffle he carried at the ground beside the door before he stepped inside, eyes focusing on the figure on the other side of the room. So this was Ise-Tasai.

Katae sat at the end of the conference room table, she noted the message from Ishi about the arrival of the newest potential member of her crew. She picked up her communicator and transmitted a text message to Sachi regarding replacing the Aeon's coffee supply. Their stored supply had been a casualty of their last engagement.

"Captain." He said as he entered, standing to attention with a crisp salute.

"Vis'Thraugh, Araan, Santô-Hei. Reporting for duty, Ma'am. Orders directed me to you for an interview, Ma'am." He finished, still standing at attention, awaiting some response.

"At ease Santô-Hei, take a seat and we will get this interview started." Katae replied with a return salute a hint of annoyance in her eyes.

Noting her look Araan did not feel too good about this process to begin with, but as she saluted in return he gave her a bow and made his way to the table, drawing out a chair in which he respectably sat, closing his eyes a moment in thought before he said anything.
"I was glad of the assignment I was given, to be able to explore the universe, from somewhere besides a prison cell."

"Well, barring any unforeseen incidents I can assure you that you will not be in a prison cell." Katae said, her expression assuming a neutral stance. "So I see according to your service jacket that you were born a Nepleslian, and that you opted to upgrade to the new Minkan form. What was your reason for that?" she said closing the folder.

Araan chuckled a bit at her statement, smiling as he sees she seems to have a sense of humor. He could only hope she was right, though, and that nothing would occur to place him back in a cell like an animal in a cage. But as quickly as the thought of an animal came to his mind she seemed to turn predatory. His past, that was a fun subject.

"Ise-Taisa, I was a Nepleslian at birth, correct, but in my teens I was taken from my home and trafficked through the underworld as a slave. I'd put a lot of fight to the bastards who did that to me over the years, but when it finally came down to it, it was your people who saved me. I was beaten, battered, and had a few bullet holes in me when they found me. I was dying, but I wanted revenge. But more then revenge I wanted to see space through something more than a slave's eyes. I opted to join the Star Army of Yamatai to ensure my own life, as well as to do my part in preventing this from happening to anyone else." He began, sighing as he leaned back in his chair slightly, tilting his head back and rubbing the bridge of his nose.

"I wanted to make sure that this didn't happen to anyone else, but I never could have survived the Augmentation process my own people would have offered, much less did I want to continue on as part of the society that even let this happen to me to begin with."
As he finished his breath drew cold and his mind raced for a moment. He wasn't sure what she would think or believe of his statement, but that was all he had for her.

Katae took a moment to digest what Araan had said, he had in fact answered her question, and one that she often asked new recruits. "Do you anticipate having any problems working with Nepleslians? We currently have two that serve aboard the ship, one you would be working in close concert with as he is part of the Infantry squad."

"As long as he had no direct hand in my enslavement, then no Ise-Taisa, I have no problem with working with a former kinsmen. Though, I have to ask, do you personally think I would have any problems working with either of them, or anyone else aboard this ship?" He asked in kind response.

"I make it a habit to not presume, we have a diverse crew including an Elysian. There have been instances on other ship of personality clashes that were racial motivated. I prefer to sort this matter out here at the starbase rather than out there on the field of battle." she paused and took a sip of her coffee.

"Okay, next two questions. First, where do you hope to see yourself in a year. Second, what do you consider to be your single most important facet that you bring to my crew." she said watching him closely with her green eyes.

"Where do I hope to see myself in a year?" He asked, more to himself than to the woman before him. "In a year I would like to see myself leading a squadron of men I feel I can trust and who have earned their warscars beside me doing the job you've set before us, ma'am. I would also like to stand knowing that I've seen and learned more of this universe than even some of our top scientists, having been there as we've discovered these things up close and personal."

He thought his answer over and chuckled to himself somewhat, a gruff sound from a man in his position.

"As to what I bring to the table. I can gladly say I bring a few things to this crew, though whether or not any of these are unique and what you're hoping for I cannot rightly say. I bring with me the experience of a man whose been drug through the pits of despair and will fight, tooth, nail, claw and all to prevent anyone I serve with from having to go through the same thing. I am a man of honor, ma'am, and an explorer at heart. I bring with me my weapon skills, having aced at the top percentile of my marksman certifications, which can be used to defend or to dog down those who have wronged us. And I bring with me a perspective of a man whose ferocity will now be cowed by surpassing numbers, whether the faces of friends or enemies, ma'am."

Katae took a moment to carefully consider Araan's responses. She looked into her cup of coffee at the swirling liquid. "Both are good answers Vis'Thraugh-Hei. Candidly spoken, and well thought out. You will find I appreciate candor." she said as she opened the folder in front of her, she quickly wrote her name on the necessary forms.

"Effective immediately, you are now an official member of the YSS Aeon. Server her well, and she will always be there for you." She stood up and walked over to him and held out one of the Aeon's ship patches. "I believe you will do." she said with a smile.

"Aye ma'am, I shall." He replied, standing to receive the patch she offered, quickly moving to affix it to his uniform, then turning his eyes to meet hers.

"Oh, and I've never met an angel before." He added, for a moment of levity.

"Keep talking that way, and our Medic will like you. She's our Elysian." Katae said as she went back to the head of the table and picked up the folder.
