(Note: This is, itself, not canon - but the answers given within it are. Ask what you will.)

In the auditorium of Kyoto University Mr Rehari Akimoto, an elderly Japanese man in a fine suit but with highly messy hair, stood before a crowd of students and the occasional journalist. He wasn't entirely certain about why the journalists were here, but he would roll with it.

"As I'm sure you all know I am the head of Elysian Studies here at the university, and while I don't like to boast, probably the best informed individual this side of Elysia Novus itself. You are here to gain some understanding of Elysian culture and perhaps the Elysians themselves. This is a subject of great relevance since, if we look at our recent history, the Elysians have been the most implacable and consistent enemy throughout. I am going to eschew the actual 'talk' due to the breadth of the subject, and thus will leave the floor open for any questions. So, ask away."

Saying this he stood back and looked expectantly at the crowd.

Camellia Sarri, completely non canonically in her plotship, raises her hand and stands.

"I'd like an indepth explination of the Elysian caste system and the taboos and such."

A middle aged man wearing a long, brown trench coat, jeans and an old shirt with bulletholes in various places. He raised his arm and asked hoarsely:
"So, what do you do for fun around here?"

"Ah, we start with a complex one. The complexity only heightened by rumours, which I see no reason to ignore, hinting that there might be a fundamental alteration to the chaste system.

What is common knowledge is that there are two 'castes' in Elysian society, although this is not how I choose to rank them - instead I see three, with the 'Seraph' making up the third and lowest of the levels. However the 'Seraph' is for the most part separate and so can be discarded from this topic.

The first thing to clarify is the names of the castes. The actual 'castes' are the Patricians and the Plebeians, however the sub-species that make them up are the 'Archangels' and the 'Angels'. These are often confused but it is important to distinguish them, even though without exception they go together.

The Patricians are the elite of the empire in every sense of the term. It is true that they have a monopoly on land, wealth and politics - but at the same time they are the most competent of all the citizens of the Empire. It is a common misunderstanding that the caste system is ironclad - it is not; it is certainly not easy to scale and was nearly impossible only a decade ago, but now through indicating remarkable competence it is possible for a Plebeian to become a Patrician. Through a system such as these, and the pride of the Patricians driving them on to further themselves, the Patricians to some extent have earned their place. The problem lies when they use their position as a tyranny - which has been all too common throughout their recorded history.

The Plebeians are the majority, the masses - throughout most of their history they have been poorly treated, malnourished and considered to be 'sinful' simply because of their genetic makeup. The Angel subspecies is, to coin an unpopular phrase less 'pure' than the Archangel - it shows evidence of having considerable human DNA in it, and it is a medical marvel that Elysians of both castes can interbreed with Humans. Some have taken this as evidence of their descendants at some point in the past with man - a hypothesis I refute in the strongest terms.

The rumours I referred to earlier regard the relationship between the two castes. There is a growing movement within the Senate, the so called 'Benevolents' who believe that a Patricians power must be used to help the Plebeians, at least to the extent where their lives are tolerable. The recent introduction of the S20 is only part of that, the impacts of which could be enormous ...

That's a general overview of the caste system, although I would be happy to answer more specific questions.

The question of taboos are in their own way more complicated as Elysian society is both more and less permissive than our own. Within the Plebeians not a great deal of individuality is allowed since it is thought that it is dangerous for those less able in the ways of the world to experiment with that which could distress them and lead them away from the nation and of God. Within the Patricians a great deal of leeway is given, the only restrictions being placed are that of infringing on someone else's personal opinions.

There is one exception to this - which is not living up to potential or disregarding the general rules of Kleos. A Patrician must act with honour in all things, and have pride in all things - a Patrician must care about his body and his soul, and to seek to make as much of him or herself as possible. If it is thought that this is not being done then they will be socially outcast, although little more. As such genetic imperfections are almost required to be repaired. The worst taboo, beyond breaching Kleos through cowardice, is to mate with a Plebeian - in the past this might have lead to the termination of the child, in these more enlightened times they are more likely to be upgraded into a full Archangel body or left as they are. Either way it would be the end of their families social life - and on Elysia that is very significant.

Thank you for that good question, whose next? Ah, what do we do for fun ... well, I occasionally like to have a dry scotch, go to the shooting range or, if I'm feeling particularly decadent go to the local Nepleslian restaurant and have a slab of human. Delicious. Next?"

The old mercenary raised his hand again: "So does this strange-ass caste system basically keep the working people down," He asked with a frown and lowered, angered eyebrows, "To keep the nobles rich and ignorant of everyone else, including them selves, and the even higher-up nobles to become near godlike and command these nobles? Pah!"

The professor shook his head slowly and a bit sadly, "Firstly who are we to judge 'strange'? Our culture seems just as strange to them. Indeed your own culture seems strange to us Yamatians. In any case the caste system does not keep the working people 'down' in particular, indeed the S20 may lead to the destruction of what might be considered the working class.

Indeed while the Plebeians used to be amongst the most maligned of people there is an increasing trend towards increasing their living standard. For the first time all Plebeians are being fed a completely nutritious diet, and which I'm told they use pheromones to increase the taste levels to beyond most food we know. Their crime levels are almost nothing. Their standard of living is far higher than most of those who live in the slums of Funky City, terrorised by violence, crime, drugs and not a small amount of prostitution.

The nobles are rich, yes, but on what basis do you call them ignorant? The Patricians receive the finest education, and one who was not educated, who was not aware of the state in which the Plebeians were in - indeed one who did not appreciate their position, would never be given a position of any height. I don't know what you're referring to godlike 'higher-ups', if it is to the Paragons - they do not command, they are merely influential and respected.

But please, ask more, your aggression is interesting."

A female Azorean seemed to stand out in the crowd next to a wealthy-looking Yamataian man. Her sky blue skin was mostly hidden by the customary clothing that the Yamataians made her wear. The shoes were almost too much to bear... but she survived. A violet collar could be seen on her neck, which meant that she was owned by someone. These 'Elysians' seemed quite like the children of Areeka, if her faint memories of childhood lore were correct. She decided to ask a question herself, even if it would cause shame to her master.

"Please, sir.." the Azorean asked in a raised voice, "Is it possible for these.. 'Elysians' to dye their hair and still be accepted by society?" She was actually asking from experience. To further his claim over her, her master had dyed her hair a bright pink, which contrasted greatly to its normally violet color. Her people didn't normally dye their hair because of the danger of permaneant damage.

"Thank you for your question,

The answer is that amongst the Plebeians it would be accepted, albeit drawing some negative attention. Amongst Patricians the majority would see it as an expression of individual aesthetic and thus to be accepted, while some would see it as a way of disguising the beauty of Gods gift. The second group is, however, in a minority.

Next?"

A little kid tugged at the man's leg. He had a question that his friends had dared him to ask, "Mister, how do Elysians find their mates?" His big, blue-eyed stare was hopefully too irresistible to lie to.

"Child, the answer is much as that many do so just as they do in our own culture - two Elysians will meet, fall in love an marry. The slight difference being that there is even less prejudice towards homosexuals than in our own, with homosexual marriages allowed once a psychological test establishes it is natural not environmental.

The other major difference is that the family often choses potential mates and introduces them to one another. Tactical marriages are well known amongst the Patricians. However while the opinion of the family is important, and most Patricians are pragmatic, it is illegal to force anyone into marriage, and the majority of Patricians would find it amoral to put on overly much pressure.

Next?"

Another young child coughed, and then asked "What age is deemed appropriate for marriage?"

"Well, Elysians can become engaged at any age about 14, get married from the age of 16, but a quirk of the Elysian system means that the rules regarding annulment become significantly more strict after one of the parties reaches the age of the 25. The is to allow for a certain amout of youthful folly. It should, however, be noted that the Elysians consider marriage to be a sacred bond, and thus take it very seriously - it's common for a couple to be in a relationship for many years before it is discussed."

The inquisitive young boy decided to ask another question. Though this one not so related to the last, he had prepared and had a multitude of questions in mind.

"Another question: We Elysians seem to be the very epitome of dignity, culture, and utopian civilization. Why is it that pankration is so very popular. It seems so barbaric."

Email from Blueberry (YSS Eucharis NG-X1-408):
Unlike android races like Nekovalkyrja, Elysians are susceptible to diseases. What are the top 5 common diseases in Elysia and what does the government do to mitigate their effects on the populace?

The Professor turned to the small child first of all, "You are certainly right in saying that the Elysians value dignity and, if I may use a word 'grace', in almost all things, however this does not conflict with their love of Pankration. Partially because of another word you mentioned 'culture' - it is part of their culture, and conceived of as an important part - it goes back for as long as we have historical records and forms the fundamental part of their military training.

However I must ask - have you ever see Pankration performed? It is true that it often results in a form of grappling and wrestling that would seem to be anything other than graceful, but this is not the entirety of the sport. There are graceful combinations of moves called 'Pyrrics' which conform to the Kata's of our own martial arts, they have complex sparring and even breathing exercises - 'Pneuma'. It is far more than mere wrestling, it is a fully rounded martial art. The Elysians would, indeed, claim it is the best since they have been working on it for such a long time (and of course the Elysians traditionally claim that anything which is theres is superior), and there is some evidence (although they would not admit it), that they have used computer modeling to develop the most effective possible techniques.

Probably most of all, however, is the fact that Pankration is meant to perfect the body, a goal that Elysians hold very highly. It is about reaching the bodies fullest potential, and being able to use that potential. That is the reason why the Elysians love it so."

He turned to the direction which the Blueberry would be in using some strange seventh sense,

"A good question, allow me to look through my notes," he paused and quickly scanned through some data-pads, "Alright. The most important factor here is to remember that the Patricians actually have a far superior immune system to the Plebeians, and the Plebeians are afflicted to fare more diseases, and ones far closer to those who afflict humans. The second factor to remember is the Elysians are particularly advanced in the field of biology and pathogen research, this has led to horrific diseases, as we all know, but also an almost unmatched level of protection against diseases.

The Patricians, in addition to being naturally immune to most diseases, have an exceptionally high level of health care which results in any disease they do somehow catch being dealt with almost instantly. The Plebeians are a slightly different story. A Plebeian's health care is based on neccesity due to the Elysian fear that too much dependence on healthcare will make them weak, and also that it would be abused by those who do not wish to work. However with diseases this is a very different story; anyone who is found to have hidden having a contagious disease is reprimand most strongly.

Because of this system, spread throughout all the Elysian population due to a large number of health centres, combined with a level of medical technology that results in almost all diseases being easily cured, there are almost no endemic diseases. Indeed all the Elysian population is heavily vaccinated, and whenever a new strain of something which has the potential to be particularly dangerous comes along a virus which targets it is developed and spread through the population. This virus itself is always high susceptible to a certain drug in case it mutates. There are two notable exceptions however:

The most common disease is an offspring of the Common Cold which mutated from the variant which infects humans at around the time of the First Heavenly War. It's fairly common, indeed treatable, however it is considered to be such a minor ailment that the health centres have not focused on its treatment, let alone its irradication, in a serious way. It's symptoms are effectively identical to our own.

The second, and most severe is Yehentar. This disease, actually a highly invasive parasite, seems to spring almost at random in both Plebeian and Patrician communities and is particularly insidious because it's symptoms strike very fast, normally killing within five hours of the first sign, and usually strikes when the victim is asleep. The symptoms are, incidentally, a fever of exceptional intensity, unconsciousness, heavy sweating, and convulsions. Many are simply found dead in their beds, and in some of the more distant Plebeian areas it is dangerous indeed. Whenever there is an outbreak of Yehentar the entire area is placed under quarantine and treated - there is a treatment but no vaccine. Currently the government is trying to discover over what medium the parasite is spread.

I am sorry I can not discover any more with my current data. Next question?"

The curious boy spoke again; trying to keep his near monopoly of questioning:

"Is there ever any fear that a combination of the Paragons and Exarchs may use their influence and divine interpretation to form a sort of oligarchy to rule the Elysian Celestial Empire, thereby making the Senate obsolete, or at least, secondary to their authority?"

"Simply put - no. The Paragon's have huge influence due to the respect that they have earned, and they are always Senators, however they have no power beyond being able to shape the debate within the Senate. In the same way the Exarch's have no power beyond that of their influence and their numbers - which consisting as it does of 166 senators or 1/3rd of the Senate is in itself significant. Although in all fairness I should mention that not all of these 'Ecclesiastical senators' are exarchs - many are experts in theological law and other religious individuals.

Religion has a huge importance in the senate, and yet if it was found that divine intervention was in some way faked, or the exarch's were manipulating the word of God for their own end then the punishment would be heavy indeed. So in summary . no.

Next question?"

The inquisitive child continued with his barrage:

"Why is it that the 'submissive' half of a male homosexual couple seen with less respect than anyone else? Also, what about the more 'dominant' half? Would he not take great offense to this disrespect to his lover?"

Being so curious, he decided to ask yet another question that had very little to do with his first set:

"Let us say that there is a Patrician, or even Plebeian couple. Let us say that one spouse is a senator while the other isn't political, and is easily satiated with being wealthy and leads a completely hedonistic lifestyle. What if the hedonistic spouse go ta bit rambunctious in his or her activities: For example, let us say that his or her parties often involved Plebs and a few others and often transform into necrotic blood orgies and things of that nature? Well, for the sake of the question, let us say that the Senator was unaware what went on while he was away. If he found out, and knew that the family's kleos would be threatened and they risked being shunned. Would it be just for the Senator to kill his or her spouse?"

A young woman, no more then the age of 14, piped up right after the boy's continued barrage, "Do Elysians keep pets? If so, then what kind?" She blinked and tilted her head as she waited for a response.
